why, WHY do you use such fucked up codecs? whats so wrong with sticking to something that ppl might actually be able to play? i thought i had every codec known to man but apparently not. i downloaded mpc (for which i had to download some freaking 7-zip program because winrar couldnt read that shit filetype) and ffdshow as the readme suggested but that shit didnt work either. sigh.

its not that hard to get it to work really and if you dont want to take all that trouble, give VLC player a shot. it should play the file without you having to install ffdshow or something similar.

YAAAY got it working BTW it looks reeeal good in VLC. looks better than xvid for sure.

sry man, i've made this choice precisely because i wanted most people be able to watch the movie without waiting 2 days for downloading. x264 decrease the size near ~33%
Btw i've made some testing on two pc with different hardware configuration (pentium and athlon), and the movie play fine on both.
Maybe it's a graphic card driver issue, i don't know =(

Because most people that have problems, are user related problems. I would suggest using media classic player (not bundled with windows) , updating sound/vid drivers (obviously) ,k-lite codec pack,storm codec pack v5.xx (I think i have v5.12). It has superior sound/vid quality to any other codecs in use not to mention the compression.It's the new xvid if anybody remembers when xvid came out people had similar problems with that... give it time and be patient.

Tbh I've never bothered to install a single codec after I discovered vlc. If a vid uses a weird codec that vlc doesn't support, I'm not gonna spend any time looking for codecs.

And since vlc (at least 0.8.4a) plays both xvid and x264 without problems, I really don't care what codec is used.

weird. watched some x264 movies with my pc at uni and that pc is weaker than the one here. and here i have these lags.
i guess it should be related to the codecs installed. at uni i only installed "Gordian Knot Codec Pack" (and nothing else).

edit: i'm able to watch it without lags with vlc. should really be a codec issue.

I always like artists first or second albums ..
for the reasons below
(this is just general)
1st album is usually raw as , where there have been no creativity constraints put in place and the artists essentially put out what they want to hear.

2nd album alot of refinement is made sonically and overall artist signature still not selling out , as they arent that well known.

3rd album etc record labels will look up and see that they can sell these people out and do whatever it takes.

Now in Metallicas case their creative ability has changed somewhat Hepfield is still a genius, Whether James Hepfield has changed as a person or because theres some shady stuff happening behind closed doors.( i would not be surprised that their record label have told them to change this or that) ie at one stage there Metallica cut all their hair at the same time. You cant tell me that a record company has not told them to change their overall appearance for the community. As soon as they have done that they have basically opened a brand new market, not just to the hardcore metal heads.

Im not saying this is bad, major labels with major distribution are about making money fullstop..

I just liked it when Metallica was Metallica and not when they suddenly changed their appearance to sell more records, think it was 1998 or something when that album was released.

Most people that liked the old Metallica consider the black album to be the start of the decline, not the haircuts ;)

Other than that I think the change in their music is mostly because of themselves changing. You can't seriously think that people stay exactly the same over 20 years. Just look at clothing fashion, do you see anyone dress today like people dressed in the eighties? People change, and so do artist and bands, and I believe that's what happened to Metallica too, they somewhat changed, not because someone told them too, but because of themselves growing older and such.

Have you seen the Metallica documentary Some Kind of Monster? If you haven't i strongly recommend it. In it I also think that you can get a feel that Metallica are not dictated by a major record company, remember, they are signed to a smallar company and not one as big as say, Sony or Universal. If the documentary depicts reality correctly then I'd say that Metallica are basicly free to do what they want, the record company only suggests singles and handles the marketing.

no comment about the codec (worked with VLC tho), most frags were pretty cool tho. was nice to see lots of characteristic frags from the players, Cooller bouncing around enemies with rockets, socrates always hitting these pixel rails on enemies 1-2 levels about him (t4, hub), toxic doing these flickrails where you hardly have time to spot the enemy, fox with maximum efficiency tdm aim ;> and czm who immediately knows what's going on and hits mad rails. also chance's rockets were nice.

Someone needs to implement a way of using those fancy graphics cards we have to do some number crunching for rendering movies. There is something wrong if my pc can render this with the q3 engine at full resolution and 125 fps, but i can't watch a movie of the same action. Maybe the makers of ffdshow will do it..

Just read readme.txt.. Theres even links (2 of them) to the right player/codec. I already had MPC, so all i needed was the ffdshow, and it worked like a charm. Gotta agree with fazz tho, video is way to dark but still some excellent frags in it. 8/10.

Nice frags but absolutely horrible music and no apparent sync with the frags. Giving it a 5, Metallica (symphony version on top of it) doesnt fit very well with quake 3.

i have a p4 2.4, video plays smoothly, sound doesnt go out of synch etc. postprocessing enabled.

video..too dark, too few players, some of the frags were pretty useless to include, as any other random player in the same situation could have done exactly the same. 6/10.

Didnt work for me with VLC, but since I dont have something better to do atm anyways I figured it somehow... Media Player Classic with some weird ass codec got it running for those who mind.

The movie itself was one of the nicest I�ve ever seen. Finally not some wacked dudes showing off their railabuse or the 30th airrocket in a row but some solid frags which looked "just right" and that�s something unusual and enjoyable imo.

fair enough, installing codecs and spending time to get a movie to play can be annoying but at the end of the day if authors don't present us with such movies the bar is not going to be raised.

It's a step forward. Crazy quality and smoothness, good sound quality and decent file size. Have to move forward sometime.

great movie, great qual worked perfect here without any codec(ye guess i have it already) in both vlc/mpc. seems to use alot of resources though(90%cpu a643200 ) guess thats why some are having problems.

lol read up on setting this codec up properly - mas the default settings wont run on every computer. I mean my comp is around a year and a half old (probs older actually) and i can run this full screen on a 17" TFT with no freezes/lags or anything. Google is ya friend, so use it instead of crying to everyone here.

VLC video freeze after the 8 second mark - check
install wmpc from readme link - check
install ffshow codec from readme link - check
wmpc "cannot render to file" - check
every other movie that does not use crappy codecs works - check
time spent downloading extra crap > time you would spend downloading a file that is 30% bigger
got angry - check
installed yet another crappy random codec in the process- check

It's funny that the author of this movie thinks that a "P4 3Ghz and 256 DDR 333Mhz+ would be enough.". Why stop at this? Just make it unplayable unless you have 2gb of ram as well. I am sure it can be done with the right combination of codecs. After all, you are saving the Internet because the file will be 5% smaller.

174mb file for 8 minutes of video is an incredible achivement apparently.

Oh wait i could get q4_finals_and_awards from the CPL finals that's 365mb encoded with a proper codec that does not require a CIA mainframe to play, and it's actually camera footage of the players monitor with more that enough fps and detail.

o rly? no thanks mate voted 0. Maybe you should spend less time encoding the videos imho and pump more of them with decent codecs.

1)That does not change the fact that it does not work if you follow the steps outlined in the authors txt.
2)It still skips because my computer is 99 years old and can play q4, q3, hl2, cs,cs-s at max fps.

Do you like the q4 auto download feature? It's awesome right and we should not blame id/raven because they put out great games. *cough*

- I am not going to research codecs and spending time on setting them up because the author wants to be a part of the uber codec anti user friendly organization for a frag movie.
- There are plenty of people for wich the movie skips and lags, and that detracts alot from the experience of waching

Movie makers should just use the most common standard for encoding. Sorry but p4 3ghz is not a normal requirement for a movie. It's that simple.

But maybe I am wrong and movie makers do not want to show off their movies to the largest audience available :P

Well, i tried deleting all my codecs and installing ffdshow before (i did that for fuels last movie), and it did not work. For this movie, I can see aproximately 25 seconds of video, then it stops and only audio keeps playing. For fuels last movie I did talk to him on IRC about the problem, and he told me that I should try the xvid of the movie instead since this he could not get the movie to work for my computer.
And I'd like to ad as well, that if I can get dvd quality for any new movie to work on my computer (I can even play nfs:most wanted on it!) it should frecking work for a q3 vid too.

Btw, wtf are you talking about christmas spirit? Christmas ended days ago, move on.

Btw, i'm the auhtor of the video, and i've never spoken with you on irc as you said above because i haven't connected on it since... the last eswc, for getting gtv ip. I think you've mistaken with someone else.
I take advice on the darkness/smoothness/codec side, this video is a good experience, for every vid maker.
But x264 is a step in the good direction, maybe i should upload both xvid and x264 versions for making transition easier but i don't like people crying freely, and i'm so arrogant you know.

I'd say for quakers only, the music taste is totaly not mine, and it seems the only editing this here movie has got is adding clips on a timeline + music. Well of course it's easier to diss, so i'll try to mention the good aspects aswell! :D For one the frags are pretty nice, and the smoothness is unreal, ive seen this before in some movies, it makes it look totaly different, this might be both a plus or a minus because i personaly found it a bit too smooth, am kinda used to how q3 really looks. And [this is pretty important] an .avi is a must.. it lagged for me alot with some intervals, and my opinion is either release only .avi or release both avi and mp4..

+ Amazing quality. I had no codec probs or anything, full screen prefection!
+ In-game sound
+ Frags! nice picks and variation throughout. You got some of the best in there, including some fucked up shit from czm on aero, just incredible. This made up for the other everyday frags.
+ Less than 30 secs for intro and outro + no extra FX or credits bullshit.

i haven't read all the comments, but ppl whining about x.264 codec & mp4 container should realize this is the new standard (for months already). x264 video codec is high cpu usage (i think the minimum cpu requirement is 2ghz - im running on an 'old' 2500+ barton and never had any problems with h264/x264 encoded files). just install (for example) CCCP and stop crying. ...or stick with your "divx/xvid only" for some more months/years and then don't download this video :]
btw, the video was ok, nice frags selection. the music (metallica?) didn't fit that much imho. good work... but bad music taste :P

Fantastic frags, visual quality and flow.
Despite the issues I had with the codecs I found VLC which solved my problems.

I can't see how people can't appreicate S&M though! I think Metallica is a great soundtrack to compliment such an epic game as q3, at such a pivitol tournament aswell.

-nocache solved all my problems with MPlayer. The FAQ suggests that this is because of bad interleaving. However, given the high CPU usage of the video codec that might not be the case here. For me problems occurred at A: 182.3 V: 181.8 but perhaps that's only when my cache got full. Without -nocache I notice I've dropped 300 or so frames to maintain A/V sync to this point.

If there's a nocache option for vlc, I don't know it. Try --noaudio.

Anyway, movie is standard but music is dire. --noaudio is doubly recommended.

Good frags, pretty crappy music (of all Metallica's stuff you had to use the garbage from their Orchestra + Metallica Soundtrack, whatever the name of it was)

Would have been nice to have fullscreen instead of widescreen, and also a crosshair. Oh yeah, let's not forget a keel enemymodel.

Overall decent flick, but I like the Goatlord's one much better.

Odd that people have trouble playing this. Only problem i had with lag or skipping was when i was trying to watch it while playing WoW :D

only real problem i had with it was fuel. i just dont like that song. other than that, solid movie, solid editing, and a great way to remember the last big q3 lan :)

No x.264 encoded gaming vid ever runs smooth on my PC. And it's not cause of any mess or wrong settings. Running a new Windows installation now with only a few codecs installed, and that's it. Still lags in both MPC and VLC. I'm running a P4 2.6GHz with 2GB RAM btw..

It's obviously a good codec, but for me it works better for feature movies and TV shows since they won't have such high bitrate or FPS.

This movie runs without any lags on my xp1800+ and 1gig ram with win mediaplayer classic but lags with vlc.

(both with all other things on my pc turned off incl. connection to internet)

must be mess or wrong settings in my opinion.

When I was done installing Windows and updating it, I installed the codecs I use then tested this movie and two other using x.264, and they are all choppy. They hang evey other second or so and get very out of synch. Same thing in MPC and VLC.

This movie is pretty good, regarding the quality of the frags.
ESWC 2k4 footage is really top notch (I know it cause I did a short movie when I was there, about the stages frags).

The movie cfg is basic, quite simple, a bit dark for me (I know it's done purposely but I don't like!).

The music, it's not my cup of tea, but I assume it's a matter of personnal taste. I have to say I like to discover new musics and styles through games video... and this one was disapointing.

Anyway, the blend effect is still nice to see. Nice work, but a very lack of originality (especially in the musical choice) makes it just "above average" not excellent (for me)

Couldn't play the vid, i have a nice pc it's a codec problem. Got the k-lite code pack, i have been able to play every video extention i've download, so what is going on with this one??? The movie is nice but although I actually like Metallica S&M, it doesn't fit the movie that well IMO. Chosing music for a game movie surely is very hard and of course a matter of taste.

The movie surely looks much better than than the average 25 FPS ones but IMO, the motion blur is too strong. It might look better if all images during 1/FPS are weighted the same but that's going to take even more CPU time (and will probably look worse than I think :) ). I guess that's why it's not implemented in TGA Hook.

The blur is strong for me to, but this natural blur is the key to downsize the codec bitrate and filesize without altering image.
I'm working on a new approach, my goal is 1600kbps video bitrate (q3fuel2 is 2600).
And what is your 1fps weighted idea precisely ?

My idea is to simulate for example 20 ms exposure time for a 50 FPS movie (that means taking the average of 20 pictures if there are 1000 pictures per second on the disk). That way, it should look like a real movie but I might be wrong and it could look strange as everything is stretched over a sharp 20 ms time frame. :)

It's a good idea in theory. In my mind the best solution would be a 1000fps cap, 50fps movie and then merge/weight the 20 frames like you said. But in reality it doesn't work well, because on high movement speed, you can see strange things, like you said again =)
If you still have q3fuel2 on your hardrive, look closely the frag of socrates at 00.44 on t4. You can see the black dots of the door, it make black lines on the frame. And q3fuel2 has only 8 frames weighted, with 20 there's to much ghosting.
I've tried 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 (!) frames blending, 8 is my favorite. From 6 to 12 it's a good choice. But it's all a matter of taste i suppose.

If I understand the documentation correctly, TGA Hook's base filter doesn't weight a number of frames equally but instead lets the frames decay exponentially. The number (BaseFilterMultiplier) specifies the weight that the most recent frame in the buffer gets compared to the next one being added.

In your movie with multiplier=8, objects with strong contrast can actually be seen blurred over a slightly longer time than 1 movie frame (20 ms). So the subjective strength of the blur of 20 evenly weighted ms would perhaps be about the same as in your movie. It's hard to estimate whether it would look good, though. :)

BTW: Of course I still have the movie on my hd. I very rarely delete a game movie and especially not one of such a quality!
