It was a great event with a lot of fun both in and around the tournaments, and I'd definitely go again. Hope you enjoyed the pictures besides being dark and blurry, we all sure did enjoy the event. See you around next time!

Time for a change from Donald Duck.
As I am reading through economics papers for uni I stumbled across this, for example: " Adrian Wood, Chief Economist for DfID, envisions a “hollowed out” Africa, with most of the population on the coasts where they could more effectively produce manufactured exports (Wood, 2002)." or the idea that countries should produce and only produce goods that they got a comparative advantage for.
While that doesn't sound too exciting, I think this could be a good source for books describing a future, dark world with radical changes to and through economy and therefore influence on people's lives. Think of how the political system in 1984 affects people's lives - not trying to say this would be anything similar, just to give you an idea what sort of worlds I mean. Does anybody know any books into that direction?
Apparently there's a decent coder interested in updating OSP if the community demands it. Should OSP 1.03a be updated with minor bugfixes (not touching physics or netcode)?

Found out Lund has a rugby team, now I'm finally sold :D just handed in my application for 1st Lund 2nd Leeds but I'm really hoping I get a slot in Lund (and, ideally, my mate gets one there too!). yeeeeeeee (who cares.)
- - - -
ok finally done with last exam that I more or less HAD to pass before going abroad, now I'm looking into either going to Leeds or Lund. as I still have to file a motivation writing I'll gladly accept all kind of input, esp. about Leeds uni as I'll probably put that as my fav (2nd Lund). gotta hand this in tomorrow and now I'm short of time (uni party demands my attendance) :> so uh yeah w/e XD thx for any help
- - - -
now that fizzy tablets have been discussed and solved to a satisfying extent, I wonder if toilets really flush the same way abroad. I'm thinking about going to possibly one of the following cities/unis for half a year/1 year:
UK:
- University of Surrey, Guildford
- University of Leeds, Leeds
SWE:
- Uppsala Universitet, Uppsala (xD)
- Lunds Universitet, Lund
as ESR is visited by plenty of swedes and brits there's surely a few people who can give me input on said unis/cities: living costs, nightlife, activities, lectures quality, travelling to other great places in the country, just about anything you experienced/found positive/negative about these places that you feel might be interesting or good to know for a student. would be very much appreciated, thanks! :)
so far my favs are either Lund (for being easier to reach and with more cities around and maybe a tad warmer than Uppsala) and Leeds (the description of the city in my flyer just sounds awesome, and it's a bigger city for a change) :)
oh yeah in case you wonder, I'm studying physics & economy :o so maybe you even know something about the institutes at said unis :D

The guys from #digitalbrutality are glad to release their latest CPM tricking movie, called momentum. Our Finnish friends mew and sopp4 (who also produced the movie) show some hot and innovative tricks on the original CPM maps as well as on b0_beta6. All tricks were performed in CPMA with default CPM physics and server configs (not DeFRaG). The movie runs about 6:10mins and weights 193MB in size (DivX codec), a higher quality version is to be released soon.
If you're in for a blast, go download and enjoy sopp4's first full length movie!
Update: Now there's also a high quality x264 version available, fast pc needed! Update 2: mew has uploaded his demos for the tricks shown in this movie!

Seeing as I turned 22 years today, I thought I'd write a short summary: God, I'm an old fuck now. :D
Besides feeling old and worn out, I'm still addicted to the same nerd stuff (namely CPM and my uni subject) although I notice it's getting less and less with time (both of it) :). My physical condition is getting worse as we speak but summer is getting closer so more healthy things like sports are on the way.
So how am I gonna spend this day (sif anyone would care really)? I'll have to clean up this mess called my flat (glad both my roommates chickened out so I can do it on my own) to get ready for the party tonight, and if I get a few minutes left I'll probably piss them away on irc/cpm/walk and just take it ez. :)

I've been going back and forth in my playlist, bored with what I was listening to while waiting on the pickup to fill up.. online radios were playing not so great stuff aswell so I just made up my mind what artists got me hooked in the past. This led me back to John Frusciante and I remembered there was some stuff to download for free on his website, so maybe someone feels like checking out some of his tracks.
Tracks I like alot:
Saturation, Fallout, Interstate Sex (esp. 2:00+)

Enough UK bashing, now it's time to cast some positive light on them again.
British newspaper The Guardian reports that an US institute with close links to the Bush government and the oil industry offered scientists worldwide money to develop studies countering the climate study by the United Nations (which basically tells industrialised countries and especially the USA that they ruin our climate). The full article can be found on Guardian Unlimited online.
bit naughty there? once again shows how badly some US organisations/the government try to hold up their worldwide influence instead of finally getting a clue and trying to fix stuff that has gone the wrong way for ages (my opinion).
discuss.

Last week (Thursday I think) I extended my mobile phone contract and went for the Sony Ericsson W810i, it's plastic but it has a shitload of functions and I really loved the handling of the k700i I have had. Today (next week Wednesday) I sent in the new mobile phone the SECOND time because something is broken. My first one didn't accept any SIM cards so it got swapped, and the swapped one has a broken play/pause key. Now I won't get no.3 before somewhere next week and I'm back at my good old k700i, if it turns out to be not as good as expected or broken again the guy at the shop told me we could arrange something and I might get a different mobile then. Any recommendations? Haven't really bothered much with mobiles lately, and I usually only use it for calling people and some SMS anyway. I wanted to get a digicam somewhen this year but right now I'm completely running out of money (even need to lend some) so it's not really an option. Seems some new mobiles have not-so-shit cameras (such as the new Sony Ericssons), so I might want to keep an eye on those. Other than that it should just have a really nice handling and be more or less slim (I'm wearing it in my pocket whenever I leave the house). Don't really know about memory, haven't used my mobile as music player yet but maybe it's okish?
My roommate didn't bother to learn for uni in the week he was home but instead bought a PS2 with Gran Turismo 4 and Tekken 1-3, 5 :D. So right while I'm typing this I farm some nice cars to get money for the even better cars. We played some to get cars like a Viper at around 950 PS, a Porsche and some azn car with really nice handling and more than 900 PS aswell. Later we got the TVR whatever with 1082 PS which is just fucking insane, especially as it has a good handling aswell (the Viper is kinda dodgy). What are the best races to play just to make money? We've been farming the Japanese Championship and now the Black Forrest League aswell. Literally farming as we let run a bot in B-Spec mode while we do other stuff ourselves :D. Lame h4x but who cares, we need the money :E. What other cars are nice? Surely there are some console players around here aswell (skint?) who know what works best in GT4 :)
However loading times suck and make farming kinda annoying :/

Just found out that Zeit.de has an online version of this awesome game: http://sudoku.zeit.de/sudoku/kunden/die_zeit/
Every day there are 3 new games (leicht = ez, mittel = medium, schwierig = difficult) you can play, the goal is to fill up all fields with numbers from 1-9 so you have the numbers 1-9 in each column, each row and each 3x3 box at the same time. Click on a field and just enter the number with your keyboard. Hit 'Spiel überprüfen' to verify your game, a small red (wrong) or green (right) text will appear in the top right corner.

another update from the second day:
the guy has been found dead in a field close to the uni this morning. so far the police hasn't released any details about his death or when and how he left/escaped from uni. a press conference was announced for today afternoon.
===
more and more details got known and released, he must have been one of the students in a friend's class at uni, studying chemistry until early this year (canceled it). he's aged 20 and shot both his parents and his grandmother this morning and then went to uni to get potassium cyanide. His car was found on the parking, containing a last letter in which he admits the murders on his family members and he announces his suicide. however the police was not able to find him yet, neither alive nor his corpse. he's still on the run and being traced by the police, possibly hiding in the university.
===
Today I went to uni at 8am for seminar as every week, which lasts 2 hours, followed by 2 hours break till next seminars/lectures start. The pc pool is quite boring and has bad air so I decided to chill outside in the courtyard (our uni is build in huge crosses which have open courtyards in between). All the broken glasses from last uni party got me slightly raged as I was taking off shoes but ye whatever. I noticed soon that I forgot some materials I could have read in the break so I was going to listen to some music but first call a friend for some stuff this afternoon.
I noticed he was sitting in the bus when I called him, and he immediately asked me where I am (he's in my class at uni). I said at uni as usual (he's missing lots of lectures lately) and he responded that the uni was currently being closed by the police and busses are canceled and stuff. I expected a boring joke but he said he wasn't kidding and now I noticed that the noise from the background was not due to some building lot (it's a uni afterall..) but from a police helicopter floating above the uni. My friend told me someone would have entered the uni armed and was trying some kind of robbery or amok run. I quickly called another friend who was also outside and about to sleep (she wasn't feeling that good) and then made my way out.
The police was acting really calm and slowly, didn't even tell us what was happening or whether we had to leave. At the entry door they then told me that once you go outside you can't go in anymore, and as I was already one step outside they told me and the people around to leave behind some line the police had put. Five minutes later we were told to go back even further so we wouldn't get hurt during a fire exchange. That was quite an upset as they still didn't even tell people inside to leavve the building, nor did they really put pressure on us to do what they just asked for. More and more police cars were coming, firearms and some special forces joined them soon. Some minutes later they closed the door and wouldn't let anyone get outside anymore (so far you could stay in or leave but not get into the building again), and the special forces sneaked around all the balconies and checked rooms all over the uni.
We got pushed back even further and told that they were looking for an armed person, but not much details were told to us students. Slowly more and more people came out of the uni and more and more cops arrived with their cars. We later left for some seminar in an extern building a few hundred meters away and when we came back 2 hours later we expected the situation to be cleared.
However the police still kept everyone away from the uni building and we heard rumours that the armed person was now kidnapping someone. As the next lectures would most likely not take place we decided to walk to the next bus stop available and try to get home (the uni is outside on a hill). Just when I came home and turn on the radio a local broadcasting station reported that someone tried to extort some chemicals from our laboratories, and apparently succeeded. He then returned home to his parents' house and shot both his parents and his grandmother. So far nothing else went public, the police is going to do a press conference later today.
scary shit tbh, if that guy had planned to go and kill random people he could have shot lots of students without anyone even noticing it early enough. you just sit outside and chill as every monday, and suddenly everything around you is fucked up. :|

The French video editing company NoSide has just released a small trailer for one of this summer's gaming highlights - the Electronic Sports World Cup 2006 in Paris. The video shows lots of familiar faces from the past tournaments held in France and a small extract of what quality competition we can expect from this year's edition. Both streams and downloadable versions in various resolutions are available.

I just watched the first 25mins of BBC's Planet Earth series part 1 (the Pole thingy), and it's scary good :D. It's crazy what weird animals and landscapes we got on this planet, reminds me to make sure I get to some of those places sooner or later in my life (hopefully :/ ). Been some time that I enjoyed watching TV stuff, should have a look if I can get my hands on more documenary stuff. I guess it will hardly live up to BBC's content tho, so far it looks amazing and they sure had to put in a shitload of effort to make it the way it is.
oh ye and can't stop laughing at that bird at around 23:30, so owned by the talking guy:
'very impressive, but no one is watching!' :D

Just turned 21 today, and tbh it feels weird. Altho I wasn't even allowed to go to all clubs and casinos before, I already feel kinda old. I've been learning much about myself in the past year, now that I more or less moved out for good. Still, on the other hand I feel like I didn't progress as much as I wanted. Some things are running smoothly, some others not as much. But I guess that's life. Damn I already sound like 40+ :D
Today I'll also come home to my parents for the first time after months, and hopefully meet some former schoolmates (one of them even has his 21st birthday tomorrow) and friends I haven't seen for quite a while. Wonder what this week-end will come up with, I hope I can hit as much parties as possible :D

Today a friend of mine drew my attention on deviantART, especially on Gilad's profile. I knew about deviantART for ages, I just never really had such a close look at the stuff over there and wasn't that interested back then. It's simply amazing what that guy from Israel is able to do with the camera, I've been browsing his gallery for like half an hour now and even forget about the food right in front of me. That just makes me want to travel the world even more, too bad I'm stuck in here. :(
What I noticed when I looked through some old stuff of myself at home, I rarely have any photos of myself and the people that surrounded me during the past few years, and I want to make sure that doesn't happen again (now that I more or less broke up with home and moved out for uni). Unfortunately I don't really have any camera at all (well except that crap you get with every mobile phone), and I haven't really looked closer what might be suitable for me, let alone affordable (I'm a poor bastard, especially right now :p). Maybe someone on ESR can tell me what I should look for, what is good or useless. I know we got a few people here who are interested in such stuff and probably have a clue (umayr, tom, .. ?).
Further, the cheap bastard I am I ripped probably half of the deviantART gallery by now to use some of that stuff as wallpapers for my notebook. Now I'm curious if there's some prog to pick a random wallpaper from a directory every time I boot my comp, has anyone heard of such a tool? That would be awesome aswell.

Just returned from uni after hopefully passing the last exam I needed as requirement for the intermediate diploma. Feels pretty cool as basically this whole semester was about that lecture and now I only got two exams left. If I pass the first one I'm already meeting the requirements for the diploma. But that's rather unlikely as it's a completely gay subject (electrodynamics) and the lecture is a (bad) joke. In two weeks I got to pass economics so I only have to get one more certificate for the intermediate diploma in that subject, too.
Food was ok, the chips were even colder than at McDonald's but at least the Cordon Bleu was good. My roommate who studies the same subject already drunk 3/4 bottle of wine (steg stfu already :D) and I might get some White Russian now, too. It's snowing outside (huge snow flakes) and the only stuff I got to do today is:
ye, thats it. So basically I can waste the day with shopping, watching some dubbed movies at cinema and bumming Zimmerman on ztn when I'm in the mood. Too early to learn for economics or intermediate diploma, too late to learn for electrodynamics, what can you do xD.
Tomorrow we got a huge students party with approx. 2000 ppl and my roommate (the bottle of wine one) is DJ so I got entrance plus beer free for the whole night. And the party is only a few hundred meters away so I don't even need a taxi or driver. Cool stuff?
Posted by spyteman @ 12:29 CST, 2 December 2005 - iMsg
Today was my lazy day, so I went shopping instead of doing uni stuff and again I noticed that in many shops some lights are flickering. They're being switched on and off all the time anyway, but you shouldn't be able to see this? It's really annoying and sometimes I even have to turn away before I start to foam and shoot random people. Is it just me or do you notice this flickering, too? Best things are these cold and boring supermarkets which already have an uncomfortable atmosphere anyway, and then they screw up completely with these annoying lights! They for sure know how to attract customers..
other than that, caps are one-size-fits-all so usually too small (or maybe I need to cut my hair O_o), sportswear is expensive as always, shoes are all crap and this oh so wonderful worn out style of trousers is slowly getting on my nerves :<
Posted by spyteman @ 07:48 CST, 5 November 2005 - iMsg
Just returned from a Turkish supermarket where they still sell coke in cans (not common in Germany anymore) so I bought some for nostalgia. As I'm somewhat wasted and a wannabe (completely useless nerd) physician I spend some time thinking about and annoying people (hi ninemil! :D) with a physics problem related to cans and gravity and energy. Got somewhat confused with the different cases and thought I'd let you know what pointless stuff I am/was wasting my time on:
Given two cans with the same mass in total but different allocations (case (a) on the left) or same material/density but different amount of filling (case (b) on the right). All cans shall have same shape/surface/radius so only mass and allocation will matter, leave out air friction, too.
Now let roll down both cans (for each case) an inclined plane and compare speeds when they're hitting the ground. Which can is faster in case (a) and in case (b)?
First one should be zzz, second one might be tricky. Hopefully I got it right myself. Wonder what you guys find out about this :>
As some people complained about insufficient parameters or circumstances, here's another small note: forget about all kinds of friction, also the filling is solid and has a constant/homogeneously density.
Still seems that I couldn't express exactly what I mean:
case (a): 1st can:
length l
outter radius r_2
inner radius = 0
density d_1
mass m 2nd can:
length l
outter radius r_2
inner radius 0 < r_1 < r_2
density d_2 > d_1
mass m
case (b): 1st can:
length l
outter radius r_2
inner radius = 0
density d
mass m_1 2nd can:
length l
outter radius r_2
inner radius 0 < r_1 < r_2
density d
mass m_2 < m_1
Hopefully that helps to understand what I'm talking about. ffs it's just meant to be an easy example you can think about and then check whether you were right or wrong :D
In case (a) the hollow cylinder is obiously slower as its moment of inertia is higher (all the mass is sitting close to the surface) and therefore more of the potential energy (which is the same for both cans) is transformed to rotation energy and not to kinetic energy.
In case (b) the hollow cylinder has a by far smaller moment of inertia, however the potential energy is much lower, too. As the equations are mass independant, the remaining part of the moment of inertia for the hollow cylinder is bigger. So again the full cylinder is faster although its moment of inertia seems bigger at first glance.

As my current playlist pretty much consists of like 5 tracks :D I think it would be nice to get some new tracks to listen to while I got to learn all day (at least that's what I'm supposed to do :l ). Therefore it should be rather chilled and calm or maybe some dance stuff (been listening to Eric Prydz mixes the whole last 2-3 days :D) and I sure know some of you guys got stuff like that. So mostly I'm looking for something like Thomilla, Ralph Myerz & The Jack Herren Band, Teddybears Stockholm or maybe something like Eric Prydz mixes again :> . Anything along these lines that you can recommend? What are you guys listening to atm?
thanks especially to lauwef and tom for the great stuff they recommended so far :D
Update:
thought I'd let you guys know what cool tracks and artists I recently found or have in my playlist:
Eric Prydz - Woz Not Woz, In And Out, Voices
Tom Novy - Take It
Armand van Helden - MyMyMy, You Don't Even Know Me, What You Waiting For (Remix), Hear My Name
Panic At The Disco - Boys Will Be Boys, Camisado, I Write Sins Not Tragedies, Nails For Breakfast, Tacks For Snacks, New Song
Daniel Bedingfield - I Gotta Get Through This
Paul Oakenfold - Southern Sun (Original Mix)
Ferry Corsten - Punk
thanks for all suggestions so far, keep em coming! :D

Currently I'm looking for a decent notebook for university (prolly won't take it to uni every day, but I need something to replace a desktop pc as I won't have one anymore), so it doesn't have to be suited for gaming (as if any notebook was..). As the IBM Thinkpads are quite expensive and as I don't really trust that many noname brands or Ebay notebooks, I think I'll go for a HP one, probably HP Pavilion zv6130EA. I'm thinking about picking some other verions instead, too. But I don't know that much about notebooks and hardware in general anymore, so I'm not sure which components are really good or not. Other ones would have Athlon64 3200+ & 60 GB & ATI Radeon Xpress 200M 128 MB (rest same) or Mobile Athlon XP-M 3000+ & Geforce 4440 Go 64 MB & only 1024x768 resolution.
What CPU and gfx card are the best out of these, and how much difference makes the resolution (15,4" / 15" for 1024x768)? Rest of the components should pretty much be the same.
I went for the Acer Extensa 4101WLMi (MediaMarkt link) for 1.299€ (I'm pretty much flat broke now). Short overview of specs is:
Intel Pentium M 730 1.6GHz, 533MHz FSB
80GB HDD (4.200)
ATI Mobility Radeon x700 (PCI-Express 128MB)
1GB RAM
Gigabit LAN
15.4" WXGA CrystalBrite TFT LCD
DVD+-RW/DL
802.11b/g WLAN (Centrino)
Win XP Media Center Edition
Only bad things I noticed so far is the Bluetooth thing not working (don't even know if it's supposed to be in there, can't find anything about it in BIOS either but it has a LED like WLAN has) and the OS which is recovery-only. The HDD was split in 2x ~35GB FAT32 partitions and a hidden recovery partition, which kind of pissed me off. Smart as I am, I didn't try to change partition sizes and filesystem with PartitionMagic or similar, but just put in some other Win XP CD and deleted both partitions. Right after that I noticed I can't install Win XP from my own original CD as it's recovery-only, so I tried to do the recovery thing - which ofc failed. I expected the filesystem to be broken (or rather non-existant as I just deleted them) and tried to format the C: partition. During that progress my battery went off so the notebook shut down and I expected to have killed my HDD as I did on a desktop machine some time ago :> . The HDD however turned out to be fine, so I installed an older Windows version to get a filesystem and the Windows GUI back (cba to do DOS) and tried to do Recovery from within Windows - which ofc failed. Luckily now I was able to do the recovery right after booting again. Now I still had to change the filesystem to NTFS (recovery converted it back to FAT32..) and kill random Win XP things and hopefully now I'm ready to do all the stuff I originally wanted to do bout half a day (or night in this case) earlier.
Beside my elite recovery actions :> the notebook has been working fine so far. The software shipped with the PC is fine once you found all the stuff hidden on 4 different CDs and got over the recovery-only stuff. The display simply owns (brilliant colors, everything looks just great) and it's working very quietly (usually you can't hear anything at all). Also the weight is ok, I expected 2.95kg to be much worse. The battery is supposed to run for about 3 hours in normal use I guess, and there's lots of stuff to tweak with the Acer notebook software that comes with the CDs (or the recovery :> ). So far it doesn't look like the 1.300€ have been wasted :)
Thanks for any input from you guys.

2 days ago the highest court in Germany pronounced a judgement that from now on it is no more forbidden for the countries to demand money from the students for studying at their universities. So far it has pretty much been like this: you paid a rather small amount (100-200€) every semester for administration and the lectures in general have been for free. Depending on the income of your parents you can get up to 585€/month credit from the German State up to a certain amount (about 12 semesters for me max.) and then you have to pay back half of the money after you finished your studies.
Now the highest court allows the countries to demand money from students, which will most likely be about 500€/semester at start (some say amounts far above 1000-2000€ are possible, too).
Especially as a friend of mine is studying in Canada I know that many countries have been demanding money from their students for ages, and the new fees won't be enough to cover the costs of the universities neither. However I still think it's a bad thing. On the one hand, I think this will (again/even more) split the society in 2 different classes, and on the other hand many of my friends and probably I myself will have to stop studying just because we lack money. So far I haven't heard of any national credit system that could borrow you the money..

The world famous Quaker Jabroni, well-known for his stunning machinegun action vs ic-GOPHER, is being bullied at the military. Packed with the heaviest luggage of the whole troop he was forced to sit on the end of a slippery bank on the military truck while this was driving across a hill. The vibrancies caused by the poorly passable road made Jabroni overbalance and he unfortunately dropped down to the ground. The Swiss army hasn't commented on the incident so far, however it is very likely that Jabroni gets bullied by comrades who are jealous of his Lamerkatz origin.
Get well soon, and don't let it get you down Jabroni!
Finally the movie many people have been awaiting for a long time has been released: Fragged by Cooller - The Russian Backup.
The movie is about 57 MB in size and runs 3:35 minutes. According to Polosatiy's news item on Cyberfight.org this movie is really worth its (fast) download.
I uploaded 2 more democasts, both from WCG USA 2002
(Check out LeXeR vs Daler democast here).
First match is Socrates vs Fatality on q3tourney2 - a probably well-known match ;) - , second match is Socrates vs Daler on pro-q3tourney4.
These democasts require both Q3/OSP (Q3 1.32 and latest OSP version should be fine).
In order to get it working you need to:
1) Extract the two .pk3 and .bat files to your <q3a>/osp directory.
2) Run <q3a>/osp/<nameofthematch>.bat
3) Before watching a second democast, remove the first .pk3 file !
So, enjoy this exciting demo, but make sure you delete the .pk3 file after you
finish watching it or you will hear live commentary each time you play a game of osp!
Since the mirrors for this nice democast seem to be down, I uploaded this democast to ESR.
"This is a demo of QuakeCon 2002 Q3A championship match (Aug 17, 2002)
between M19*LeXeR (Russia) and *69|Daler (USA) with a synchronized radio
commentary which was provided live by Team Sportscast Network (great job, guys!).
In order to get it working you need to:
1) Extract the two .pk3 and .bat files to your <q3a>/osp directory.
2) Run <q3a>/osp/lexer-qc2002.bat.
So, enjoy this exciting demo, but make sure you delete the .pk3 file after you
finish watching it or you will hear live commentary each time you have a game of OSP! :)
