QL DevPick: QuadHog (11 comments)
Posted by Nukm @ 20:34 CDT, 18 March 2011 - iMsg
this weeks devpick kicks ass
everyone hunting the quad, epic runs and a lot of chaos
doesnt work on all maps but its a lot of fun usually

This weekend's DevPick is FFA with a twist. Instead of the typical everyone against everyone, QuadHog is all versus one: whoever holds the Quad Damage. The only way to score points is to either kill the Quad carrier, or get Quad kills yourself.

Work as a team to take down whoever holds the Quad, but as soon as he's taken down, it's a mad rush to pick up the quad and continue scoring.

QuadHog will be running all weekend, so definitely check it out this weekend and get a few of the oh-so-satisfying Quad Damage runs.

Blizzard Games may be excluded f WCG2011 (21 comments)
Posted by Nukm @ 04:05 CST, 25 February 2011 - iMsg
http://www.thisisgame.com/board/view.php?id=5...amp;token=

The possibilities of Starcraft and Warcraft 3 being excluded from WCG 2011 has been brought up recently.

Although four months has passed since the Grand Finals of WCG 2010 that took place in LA, there hasn't been any official statements regarding the place it will be held on[T/N: It's to be held in Korea, according to Fomos, but city hasn't been decided] nor the official events.

During all of this, there has been strong possibilities of Blizzard games being excluded as an official event. The source of the problem has to do with the Starcraft Brood War IP rights conflict.

This is because Samsung Electronics, a member on KeSPA and WCG's official partner, is strongly against Blizzard games being recognized as official events in the WCG. According to an industry insider, Samsung Electronics has explicitly ordered WCG to exclude Blizzard games from official events.

But WCG disagreed, claiming that it will have trouble promoting the event and getting other partners if Blizzard games are excluded. To this, Samsung Electronics responded by saying "Go and get money from Blizzard, and all other game companies, the fees needed to run the events and fees for choosing their game [T/N: or "fees associated with choosing their game"].

Thus, WCG has been conflicted whether to include Starcraft, Warcraft 3, and even Starcraft 2 as an official event.

There is also another obstacle WCG needs to handle before being able to choose Blizzard games as official events. This is because WCG's main broadcasting station, OnGameNet, is currently being sued by Blizzard for issues related to Intellectual Property.

There are many perspectives that note that even if WCG includes Starcraft, Starcraft 2, and Warcraft 3 as official events, as long as the intellectual property rights conflict is not resolved, it will be impossible for OGN to broadcast these games.

An insider familiar with the situation has noted that "WCG does not wish to exclude Blizzard games as official events. But because broadcasting it will be impossible and cooperation with networked organizations is very difficult, it will be difficult to even send out Korean representatives"

Continuing, he added that "They are currently considering including Blizzard Games as an official event under the condition that they do not broadcast the games within Korea and Korean representatives are not playing in the WCG".

WCG will soon release information regarding the official events of the WCG 2011 Grand Final

topics are:
- social games
It’s like I was saying in that talk, I don’t necessarily like to approach it from that question “Is the player having fun or not,” because I’m usually talking to designers at these lectures. I go at it from the designer’s side and I ask “Are you trying to take advantage of your players and exploit them? Or are you trying to give them something?”

- the evoluion of adventure games
So, if you play Super Meat Boy for example, it’s a lot like an old-school platformer, but it’s refined. That game could have been made in the early nineties technically, but the design sensibility is very modern. So, it’s a product of modern design ideas.

That happened to all the genres, but it never quite happened in adventure games. T
- braid and games as art
PC Gamer: You said in a recent lecture that your goal is to make games that “speak to the human condition.” If Braid did that in terms of Time and Memory – in terms of those themes – in what way do you hope The Witness does that?

Jonathan Blow: Well, Braid isn’t about Time and Memory or anything like that.

found it to be quite interesting

Quake Live Update - February 2, 2011 (175 comments)
Posted by Nukm @ 19:51 CST, 2 February 2011 - iMsg
The qlQuake Live Premium Pak 6 arrives one day behind schedule. It includes the usual few new maps on top of small updates, changes and fixes.

It introduces the two brand new Maps "Concrete Palace" (Duel), "Dies Irae" (TDM) and brings back the classic "Skyward" (known as wcp23, CTF). Additionally the SG gets nerfed to 100 dmg max with a slightly bigger, fixed spread). Furthermore in TDM only the MG and SG Bullets will only do 4 dmg instead of the usual 5. The timeout length is now configurable in the Advanced Server Configuration. On top of that come a bunch of new settings, fixed bugs and other small changes. All of the can be found in the changelog below:

bring it back!

bf only had a very short run in the tournament mappools, although we saw some great matches on it (when we were lucky enough to see two players compete on it who actually practiced it. admittedly we also got a lot of very defensive matches, but
a) players still needed to figure out the map
b) the whiners were so loud that some nail biter matches that would have gotten a lot of praise if they were played on lost world, got flamed because of ignorance and plain lack of understanding what was happening.
c) the map was updated! the ra area is more open now, allowing for more possibilities to attack or just pressure it. the one tele exit was relocated and it makes the map faster. one yellow as replaced by a green armor and some other minor tweaks. (sound issues were addressed but tbh there is still work to be done in that regard)

because bf is in the esl germany bundesliga mappool i have played it quite a bit lately and i am enjoying it a lot. bring back battleforged. (i guess we wont see any changes in the zotac pool before the iem finals but there are other cups and i encourage everyone to just try it out again)

Cypher: "Usually I do not like my game" (17 comments)
Posted by Nukm @ 18:25 CST, 21 January 2011 - iMsg
While the IEM proceeds, fragster.de fragster talked to a self-aware Belarus Alexey "Cypher Yanushevsky. With losing just one single map he advanced to the playoffs. In the interview the Belarusian talks about a demolished mouse, his match against Cooller and his little secrets regarding the game.
Do you see any chance for Cooller winning a Quake Live title? He was quite close at Quakecon where he lost the final against you. He has not got any awards on his Quake Liive site so far.

Cypher: On Quakecon he had his best shape since now, there was everything perfect for him. Of course he lost to Spart1e in the Winnerbracket final but on the last day we played versus Cooller in about 20 practise games. After that he had a good warmup with me so he played better. He was in perfect conditions but I still managed to win against him. It will be very hard to see Cooller to play the way he did at Quakecon.
