The Quake Live Update v1069 has just been released today. Among a few fixes (hello Elder's fog), the changelog also contains a new addition to the servers that brings us "alternate death effects through workshop".
And at the same time, the "Gibs!" workshop item was just released!
Come and check Quake Live on Discord to congratulate the devs for this new addition.
Here is the complete changelog:
- add server support for alternate death effects through workshop
- fixed inability to look around after issuing a map_restart while paused
- grappling hooks on dead and disconnected players weren't freed, resulting in the hook snapping from player to player
- clientmute now properly mutes team chat
- fixed some random color issues on map rotation error output
- powerups and keys were spawning before the minimum amount of time at map start
- elder: fixed doubled up fog volume
- ironworks: fixed ffa spawns
Last Tuesday, the HoQ TDM Spring 2016 league saw its last match played. The time has now come to release the rankings for the three divisions.
First, if you missed some games, most of the VODs are available on Plus Forward (please point out the missing ones). We also hope some players will come forward and upload some demos.
We're now in the round catchup, where all the late and wildcarded matches will be played. The last Division 1 match was played last week. Only Division 2 and 3 are still running now.
The map list of this season consists of Deep Inside, Dreadful Place, Grim Dungeons, Hidden Fortress, Limbus, Purgatory and Ragnarok.
4.6 - If an admin is present for the map picking, the procedure should go through him. If not then the clan leaders should go through the following procedure:
* The cointoss winner decides which team picks first. The team that picks second will drop first in the event of a deciding map.
* Each clan picks one map from the pool. The same map cannot be picked twice.
* If a deciding map is needed then each team will drop a map and whichever map remains will be played.
Update: nerds were sanctioned with a noshow against Virtual owners (insaccato preferred to go and play another match). They didn't agree with the admin decision and decided to drop from the league.
The cash prize distribution has been finalized. We have a total of 562 and we don't really expect any more donation now. The first and second of Division 1 will respectively be rewarded with 210 and 150. The winners of Division 2 and 3 will respectively get 120 and 80. Again, thanks to our donors :)

* Each clan picks one map from the pool. The same map cannot be picked twice.

Last week saw two teams dropping out of div1: the big dicks and Pacmen. Just 4 teams are left now and Deliberate Murder vs Team Hungary will meet this Monday for the 3rd rank.
We had another drop out in Division 2, Onfire decided to give up. Division 3 also had its share of problems. RAKS couldn't get 4 players against Dretwe Lamy, who accepted a noshow win. But then Dretwe Lamy played against nerds with an invalid player (shib who is not part of their squad). In the end, Dretwe Lamy agreed to settle a new date against RAKS and was mercy'd twice by nerds anyway.
Update: excel was kicked out of Div2 after 2 noshows.

14:00 CDT, 9 May 2016: Deliberate Murder vs Team Hungary Pacmen vs deal with it Pacmen vs Team Hungary the big dicks vs REKT Deliberate Murder vs Pacmen

* Each clan picks one map from the pool. The same map cannot be picked twice.
* If a deciding map is needed then each team will drop a map and whichever map remains will be played.
Division 1 should be over by now, but we have 6 matches in the catchup round. Anyway, the main encounter for the first rank was played last week. It seems nobody will be able to stop deal with it now, REKT just lost to them in a close close game.
The main game of the second division was also played last week, (B52) faced last pick and managed to defeat them after a long evening! In the same week, the Russians also got rid of WORLDSTAR and are definitely leading the rankings now. Note that excel, Burrito and Onfire still haven't scored any points!
Only one game played for the 5th div3 round, Zombei ate up RAKS. Virtual owners and Dretwe Lamy have rescheduled for Sunday evening.
Division 1 Team Hungary 0:2 deal with it (VOD, demoVOD) Round 4: deal with it 2:1 REKT (VOD, spec demos)
Division 2 Onfire 0:2 last pick (demoVOD) (B52) 2:0 WORLDSTAR (VODs: klyb, flair) Round 6: (B52) 2:1 last pick (VOD)
Division 3 RAKS 0:2 Zombei (VOD) infinity vs Platige Team (wildcard by infinity)
Update: Onfire decided to drop out, all the remaining opponents were given defwins. Update2: the big dicks didn't show up for their last match and decided to drop out before we kick them. Update3: Pacmen ran out of pills and dropped from div.
Division 1 only had one match from round 4 played this week. Now, Pacmen won't be able to play before May 4th and deal with it and REKT are struggling to arrange a date. But Deliberate Murder have been quite active! First they managed to get a clean win from the big dicks. And then they faced their round 3 opponents, REKT, in a thrilling three-mapper. You should definitely check the VODs if you haven't seen this match ( 102, ? insan3). Round 5 is the last round for Division 1, but there are still 8 matches to be played.
last pick and (B52) still lead the Division 2 rankings after winning their matches. The other match was wildcarded by Onfire. Division 3's Zombei remains undefeated after a close game against Dretwe Lamy. And Platige Team is on the same path after meeting with Virtual owners.
One word about nerds as they only played 1 match in 4 rounds. All their opponents used wildcard and they don't have a match this week. They're the favorites of Division 3 so Zombei and Platige Team should take advantage of the delayed matches to practice, practice, practice !
With two wildcards, one forfeit loss and a failed reschedule, the round 3 could seem pretty quiet. But the div1 game between Team Hungary and the big dicks brought a good three-mapper. Also, the russian clash in div3, RAKS and infinity, ended up with a deciding map. In div2, WORLDSTAR versus Hateful Eight was also a close one.
The crash prize distribution has been settled last week, but we're reviewing it and may alter it in the near future to redirect some money to the lower divisions! You can see the details about the donators and the distribution in the google doc.
Pacmen vs deal with it (wildcard by Pacmen) REKT vs Deliberate Murder (to be rescheduled, Latrommi away until 12th) Team Hungary vs the big dicks (VOD)

* Each clan picks one map from the pool. The same map cannot be picked twice.
* If a deciding map is needed then each team will drop a map and whichever map remains will be played.
Round 2 only saw 5 out of 9 matches played: 4 teams handed their wildcard to the admins. And the 5 matches played were 2-mappers!
In Div1, the big dicks managed to get 4 players and defeated d4. Hungary (despite the help of feeder and dash) failed to win a map from REKT. As for Div2, last pick mercy'd the Hateful Eight twice and (B52) seemed comfortable against Onfire. The only match in Div3 put the Zombei ahead of infinity!
The crash prize distribution has been settled. Division 1 will receive 90% of it (50% for 1st rank, 25% for 2nd rank and 15% for 3rd rank) and Division 2's first rank will get the 10% left. You can see the details about the donators and the distribution in the google doc.

* Each clan picks one map from the pool. The same map cannot be picked twice.
* If a deciding map is needed then each team will drop a map and whichever map remains will be played.
During the first Div1 round, the big dicks couldn't deal with it and pussied out with a forfeit loss. Team Hungary failed to show up because feeder decided Quake isn't fun anymore and dash wouldn't play without the best possible line-up. In the only match played, REKT got rid of Pacmen in 2 maps (Flair might upload that VOD to YouTube!).
Div2 went more smoothly. (B52) made a strong impression and double-mercy'd the Burrito. The Hateful Eight probably had a bad warm-up and needed a thrilling third map to win over excel. Also, WORLDSTAR used the wildcard against onfire. Finally, all the games from Div3 were played, and there are VODs available for all of them. So go and check them out!
This Sunday, 27th of March, will see the first matches of the HoQ TDM Spring Season 2016!
With 3 divisions and 20 teams, this new season features 2 more teams than the previous. So far, the prize money consists of 455 EUR. The details of the prize distribution will be announced later.
Here are the matches for the first round of the league. The news will be updated if the teams are rescheduling. We really urge the teams to reschedule as soon as possible when needed, and contact the admins about it.

DOOM will be released on May 13th.
Overwatch will be released on May 24th.
A few top players from Quakelive are already playing Overwatch Beta. And the fact the game is made by Blizzard gives some nice hopes for big esport competitions. I guess ESL, ESWC (if it's not dying?) and smaller companies will jump in the hype train and propose even more tournaments very soon, probably some on LAN.
DOOM, which is mostly a single player game, also aims at multiplayer and could have some place in future QuakeCons (even though nothing was announced for qcon 2016).
So... What's the future for Quakelive ?
DOOM 3, PainKiller, ShootMania, Quake 4, UT3 and others have passed, but nothing could really break the quake3/live core community.
I'm really surprised Quakelive competitions have been living some long after ESL dropped the game at the beginning of 2012. I didn't expect FACEIT, 125 FPS, ZOWIE, (QuakeCon), zee russians and others to come forward that much with decent results.
But I fear this new wave will have a bigger impact then the previous games on Quakelive...
Two months after the end of the HoQ Fall Season 2015, it's now time to announce the new season!
The sign-ups for the TDM HoQ Spring 2016 Season will be opened from the 1st to the 20th of March. The league will start on the 27th of March.
The rules has been freshened up a bit : A TDM squad now has a maximum limit of 6 players. The map pool almost remains the same : Deep Inside, Dreadful Place, Grim Dungeons, Limbus, Purgatory, Ragnarok and a 7th map that hasn't been decided yet (Tornado or Intervention).
Given the success of the donation campaign from the previous season (see the details), we've decided to run a new one for the coming TDM Spring 2016 season. You can donate at Paypal@xou or just use the plain old Paypal link.
- Prizepool will be similar as before, around 2000 EUR in total with a large cash element.
- It will be casted live this time, me and Gilanguar.
- Map pool and all that are still up for discussion. I'll leave it open for now. Elder only is very much an option.
- Rentals can be talked about - although not an official service at FoM, I'm willing to set something up.
- Similar for travel expenses, I can't promise anything, but I think we can organise something on a case by case basis.
- I have a definite 1v1 double elim set up. TDM was a bit of a bust last time, but if I have enough confirmed people going to play TDM then I'll make sure there is a competition for it with a small prize pool (but nothing like duel).
[...]
If everything goes well, I'll have a little FoM 'prequel' online tourney for January. But that's also something that'll depend on who I can scramble together to help me out - as I'm stretched thin between project at the moment. Online prizes would include tickets and expenses covered by FoM and maybe something more - but that's still very much up in the air.
Make sure you read the original post and cheer the man up for the next QL LAN!
Last Monday, the HoQ TDM Fall 2015 league saw its final match played! The time has now come to release the rankings for the three divisions.
But first, all the VODs should be available on Plus Forward (please point out if there are missing ones). Also, just a few spec demos are on ESReality. We hope some players will come forward and upload some more demos.
The catch up round of the TDM league is already well started, and just six matches are left to be played.
Three of them will be played this monday evening, including the Div1 decider for the 2nd rank: Deliberate Murder vs REKT. Also, tonight's the night for WORLDSTAR with two matches. They should be getting into the top3, and possibly the 2nd rank if they can defeat dioxide!
On Tuesday evening, the Hateful Eight should confirm their top rank in div3 against Dretwe Lamy. Somehow, ashlen decided to let their chance slip away and gave Hateful Eight a default win last week. Also last pick will face the p1mps and aim for a 4th consecutive win.
Finally, the last Div2 match between dioxide and last pick, which should be the decider for Div2 first rank, will be played next monday, 7th of December.
All the results of the previous matches are available. Also we have some VODs and spec demos.

The fourth round of the TDM League is starting on Sunday evening.
In the first division, Incoming Murderes are leading with 3 victories and still have to play Team CZE (this Sunday / wildcard by CZE) and POXUI (14th at 21CET). So far they seem to be on the right path to win the big prize. The outcome of REKT versus Deliberate Murder will be important: the winning team will be able to take the 2nd rank in the league. EliteFour decided to drop from the league and disband after losing to Deliberate Murder (VOD).
All the results of the previous matches are available. Also we have some VODs and spec demos.

Two months after the end of the HoQ Spring Season 2015, it's now time to announce the new season!
The TDM HoQ Fall 2015 Season will be starting in October, while the sign-ups should open around the 27th of September for two weeks.
A new design for the website is under way and will settle the definite agenda for the league. The rules has been reviewed : there is now only one wildcard per team. The map pool almost remains the same : Deep Inside, Dreadful Place, Grim Dungeons, Limbus, Purgatory, Ragnarok, Tornado (Deep Inside now replaces Hidden Fortress).
Also, you can now donate forthe league. This should help to build some prize money for the competition and to attract / motivate more teams to sign up!
