It came to near death in 2006 and 2015 but there were still more casual activity and some things to look forward to. Now we have nothing to look forward to. Also the critical mass of players in quakelive and cpm have been lost. Reflex showed promise but lost its way soon after.
An uninspired successor game that nobody actually likes to play finally did it. We have lost the critical mass of old school players on older quakes and the casual gamer is simply not interested when there are better games out there.
Blizzard with OW league is showing how esports needs to be done and arena fps is alive, if that is any consolation.
Nothing is going to bring back my beloved game to life now, finally I have resigned to this fact.
Maybe diabotical has a shot but not having any high expectations.

So I saw over last few months almost everything I had complaints about in the initial beta has improved significantly, however sound design remains exactly same. I am wondering if 1 Million dollar tourney is having a reality distortion effect as no one seems to talk about this basic issue.
in quake games thus far sound was top notch (even in quake4 when q4max fixed the openAL related bugs). This one has 4 major problems.
1. There are no separate controls for turning on/off map hum sounds (lava, distant shit exploding, NOT the map music) and footstep/ weapon blasts happening nearby which makes you die even before you realize theres some one behind you hitting you often times.
2. Some characters have ridiculously loud self hums like anarki hoverboard. Its okay to present the anarki hum to nearby players but not the player himself.
3. Positional sounds are a step downgrade from quakelive...while in quakelive it was not perfect, but was pretty good.
4. The weapon sounds are downright unsatisfying compared to any previous quake.
The combined effect of all these is a drowned out in sounds experience without any sense of precision. I hope anyone who has played quake for sometime can understand what I am talking about.
While I have complaints about some other things, nothing else compromises my quake playing experience in QC more than sounds.

Controls beta invites sent out by region but fails to launch appropriate number of servers. Quakelive day 1 all over again when they could even predict demand.
I dont even want a key anymore, they have already failed.

If you remember the kick ass music video of Biting Elbows - 'Bad Motherfucker', the guy behind the video, Ilya Naishuller has made a full length feature film with A-list actors. Probably worth a watch.
the original music video (someone posted it in ESR back then)

Is the mega bug = elder secret? or there is something else? Noctis had said syncerror will show it on quakecon unless someone found it prior to that. (Apparently noctis knows what the secret is)
If its indeed the mega bug then I am disappoint.

"Nomad": Collaboration between renowned Tuareg guitarist and singer-songwriter Omara "Bombino" Moctar from Agadez, Niger and Dan Auerbach from "The Black Keys.
Heres the opening track
Interesting facts about the artist:
"While living in Algeria and Libya in his teen years, Bombino and his friends watched videos of Jimi Hendrix, Mark Knopfler and other to learn their styles. He worked as both a musician and a herder in the desert near Tripoli."
"Later in 2007, tensions grew again in Niger and ultimately erupted into another Tuareg Rebellion. The government, hoping to thwart the rebellion in all its forms, banned guitars for the Tuareg, as the instrument was seen as a symbol of rebellion. Additionally, two of Bombino's fellow musicians were executed, thus forcing him into exile."

"We start by looking at an amphipod, a tiny shrimplike critter about a millimeter across. For some reason (vanity?) it’s decorated by an even tinier diatom, a bit of algae that is common in phytoplankton. From there we zoom in on a yet-tinier bacterium, just chilling out near the middle of the diatom. Human beings have about ten times as many bacterial cells inside them as “human” cells. The bacteria are the passengers, we’re just the bus."

Hello fellow NA quakers, if you dont find sitting beside several teleporter entrances on bloodrun night after night so that other guy falls on your crosshair, interesting any more or tired of the aimfest that quakelive ctf is or if you are getting owned by the countless cheaters on the CA servers and want to play some good ol ctf maps with fast paced action come idle #uscpmpickup on quakenet and !add ctf
If any admin has the decency to admit the current front page stuff in esreality has no longer any relevance to the average NA quaker of late, is welcome to major this.

NA CTF community frag movie by INCubus, some bad humor, some good frags or the opposite ?
INCubus would like to extend a special thanks to everyone who sent demos to him, w/o them this "video" would not be possible. Also thanks to Pat "gambit" greekman for the herbert voice over.
I am lower-mid tier duel player (or used to be so till everyone got better :P). These days I don't find duel interesting at all, I dont get any better with each duel I play, I pretty much know every regular quakelive duel players in NA, their styles, their strengths and weaknesses. Even before I start a match I pretty much can tell whom I can beat easily, who I will give a hard time to but will fail to win since they have 10 percent better lg/rail or superior +back and will find a situation to exploit that to fullest, and which will totally decimate me. As a result I dont find duel interesting anymore, I have tried to play more methodically sometimes i.e. actually trying to time by clock and not by feel but patience does not last more than 5 mins when I am raping or getting raped either way.
I am assuming the only way to get better is to play objectively instead of subjectively that is not care who I am playing, he is better than me or not and just concentrate on the map and the ongoing match but I find exceedingly hard to do that, as a result duel has become boring and I find hopping into some random CA server more rewarding in terms of pleasure, and the occasional pickup in the pickup channel. I know for sure there are many others out there who feel the exact same way, i.e. have found their limitations and dont know how to get past that, any tips on how to make duel interesting again will be appreciated. Mind that I am not trying to be a competitive dueler, my interest in quake is entirely casual, just how to make the casual duel games to feel pleasurable in some way or other.
yea, yea I am aware that this sounds like some kind of midlife crisis in terms of quake but any advice is welcome.

Stuck in a place where I can not play any form of quake for 3 months and watching old quake 3 movies on youtube I felt like making a list of quake 3 movies that has the same relationship with playing quake as good german porn has to jerking off, they make you feel like doing it right away, all these movies have that only one thing in common, there are many q3 movies out there that are possibly even better but I gave you the criteria to be in the list right ?
[disclaimer: many of us have seen these time and time again but these are ones that feels fresh every time, also there are many new users in this site who might not have seen all, also amid all the hue and cry that quake is finally dying maybe these will make us feel like playing again!]
Starting off bit casually...
Getting more intense...
The frag machine...
When your nerves cant process any more turning to slow mode..
and the last one to show the game at its best by the best at it.
So with punkbuster being gone (not that it was of any real use), now it seems anyone and everyone is using wallhacks or aimbots in NA. Half of the CA servers have one cheater or more, wrecking the fun out of the game. Even people I used to know, who are decent players in their own right have a sudden skill jump (fairly obvious wall hack). When it started it was all cool but right now if not checked this would reach epidemic proportions over 1 or 2 months and will just send most non cheaters out of the game for a long time due to sheer annoyance. Actually watching wallhackers made me appreciate the skill of non-hacking good aimers like demex or everkill more than before, cause these newbs sometimes fail to pull shit that genuine aimers make look effortless.

I have to travel to Hsinchu, Taiwan for some business coming April. I kind of think (I might be misinformed!) that unlike the places I have traveled so far in my life (parts of India, I speak 2 Indian languages and you can always find someone who speaks English in India unless its deep rural area, parts of Europe where most people understand English and USA is easy of course unless its deep south or black people using a very heavy accent) , it might be really hard to find an English speaker there and i have a growing phobia without some working knowledge of Chinese I might face major difficulties. Any suggestions ?
I dont want to become the 2nd r1ddler and I dont even believe half of the things in the article but still this article is interesting to read and might have some amount of truth in it.
So the big update finally happened, 6 "new" duel maps have been released. I have nothing against aerowalk being in the map pool, but I can not justify battleforged being in the pool with atleast 3 more maps being present, each of them either seemingly better or lan proven in another version of quake.
My opinion:
choice 1: Phrantic, a proven hit in quake 4, fast dynamics, more suited for a 10 min time limit game.
choice 2:Hektik, already looks better than battleforged, map is very interesting and quite different from all other maps.
choice 3:Hub3tourney1 remake: has been tested before, was interesting.
I would like to know what was the process involved in selecting the tournament map pool, last year id disappointed by selecting CA2 in tournament map pool while better alternatives existed. Battleforged might be a good map for 2v2 tdm but that map has so many ways to run around, its most likely to produce borefest matches with 4-3ish scoreline.

Okay I saw inception last Friday, on the facevalue
+ its a movie that keeps you glued to the screen, very captivating
+ great score by Hans Zimmer.
+ somewhat original plot, though has some things in common with both dark city and matrix.
+ good acting from everyone but Ellen Page, she felt a little mis-cast for that role, still okay.
- Some parts of the plot has little / no explanation causing some holes in the otherwise neatly woven fabric
However, as I go over the movie I have a few questions that will need a second viewing and some are intentionally unanswered, it will good to have a retard-free discussion on this (No H3artless and such trolls are allowed)
1. Why choose such weird names for characters, is that a clue to something, most of the names were very different from standard Christian names.
2. why Saito looks progressively older with each dream level but no one else does ?
3. Is the whole thing in Domm's dream as the movie cuts with the top still spinning, is there other clues in the movie that I might have missed suggesting it or the contrary.
overall movie leaves a few puzzles as memento did as well.

Remember reading posts about OnLive in ESR a year back and the skepticism around it, I was skeptic myself. However it is for real and I tested it myself.
I opted for the founding member's program, sign-up here signup
You are basically playing the game as a stream, your inputs go to server and rendered frames come back to you. I did not feel any lag that hurts gameplay. I was playing batman: arkham asylum. The packet drops in network appear as similar glitches as seen in flash videos., does not hurt gameplay in any way. To be honest I did not expect this to work this well. But if it stays this way this can change the future of PC gaming.
pros
+ a low end computer can play the uber pc games
+ you need not buy the full game, rentals are are under 5$ for 3 days unlimited, under 7$ for 5 days unlimited.
+ no setup time at all you just jump into the game like a youtube video
+ decent resolution
1.5 mbps connection -> SD quality, normal tv, wii console output
5 mbps connection-> HD quality comparable to xbox / ps3 ouput
+ I did not feel any considerable lag in 6 mbps connection
+ friends, brag clips etc integrated
cons
- needs a WIRED connection, and the more uninterrupted the better
- right now only has about one and a half dozen slightly old pc games, which will obviously improve
you guys should try and voice your opinion. For trying out you can play first 30 mins of any game free.

I have been a massive mx518 fan and my last mouse was the 3rd mx518. However since vista /window7 logitech mice has been extremely unreliable and I was crippled with what I think mostly software issues.
problems I faced
1. if I use setpoint it would stop working randomly, it wont crash but the mouse sensitivity would suddenly drop down to extreme low mid game and stay that way
2. similar problems even if I used windows provided driver.
3. in_mouse 1/2 did not help much regarding this.
overall I am frustrated with logitech mx518, and would be happy to say goodbye to it. I am looking for a mx518 replacement which has to be reliable and wont act up midgame.
should I go for MSIE 3.0 or the deathadder or something else ? can any one provide some advice ?

This dude has spent the maximum time playing quakelive in earth. I just could not resist posting one of his youtube videos, its more random than even the GTA ingame videos you have seen in certain ways.
tired of playing duels and the occasional ctf/ca, there are no pickup channels or people run pickup servers (like ctf) for quakelive tdm in north america. I dont know why but tdm seems to be the most neglected gametype since quakelive started. CA is just plain gay and can never play more than 20 mins at a time.
I tried the chrome os with sun virtual box, first of all there were several login issues, which I blame on virtual box, but the whole thing is a glorified browser with a huge bookmark tab, and yes thats all.
this has to be the biggest joke in computing industry ever.
I just felt the starting 10 second riff of Oasis's " Champagne Supernova" (minus the ambient music they mixed) and RHCP's "Soul to Squeeze" are essentially same with minor difference.
please listen to both and tell me if my ears are wrong.
things that are not clear to me, if there are no rendering computation hardware on client side, essentially everything is computed in the server, frames are compressed and sent to the client....in this model, RTS , MMORPG's are definitely possible since there's not much going on anyway, are fps'es even possible ?
this is like a streaming movie except u r in the movie too !!
and what about bandwidth variability, temporary QoS violations that are part and parcel of any home internet connection.
basically my question is anything real kick ass possible in this model or just some lame games for 7 year olds ?
recently saw a spanish horror movie "El Orphanato", it reminded me of the classy horror films i have enjoyed over the years. Wanted to see how fellow esr users like horror movies. List your top 5 here.
Warning: Only horror movies that are good films as well, no retarded slasher / tomato juice blood all over / corpses going on munching like pac man / stupid zombie shit / no guinepigu series movies are allowed.
My top picks:
1. The Shining
2. The Others (great performance from Nicole Kidman)
3. Ju On part 1 ( the original Jap one)
4. The Exorcist
5. Dark Water (original jap not the remake)
imo "el orphanato" borrows the theme from dark water a bit but its a great movie in itself. my other all time favorites are Odition (Audition: Jap), 1408 , Identity (not exactly horror), RoseMarys Baby (makes u feel at unease), The haunting (old black and white one).

After numerous blue screens and a final meltdown starting with some spyware, even though I had windows defender and one-care subscription on my windows vista, I installed fedora 10 on my desktop.
Found kind of surprising that indeed linux has come of age, last time I had linux for non-work(about 5 years ago) (in my work I am bound to use linux, thats different) purposes it was hard to even get sound out of a mp3 player without compiling sound driver for the particular motherboard. This stuff seemed to work out of the box, as I could get flashplayer for fedora x86_64., most of the internet seems visible and audible to me and heack yeah I could even yum install vlc-player.
world would have been perfect if I could play quakelive too but that doesnot seem possible as of now, dont know id will ever make it for linux or not. So at some point I might have to make it dual boot with xp / vista or virtual machines ( though dont like them much)
microsoft,
you are going down, I swear.
Edit:
could get quake 3 working in linux, using icculus ioquake3 x86_64 rpm, could play spiterbot and cpma mod. Since most cpm servers dont enforce pb, could infact play in them with ioquake3 executable instead of 1.32c. Can not get quakelive to work under firefox running under wine.
Can enter the java script display page, can even launch the game but after that wine emulated firefox just crashes. If anybody has had any success regarding that, please tell.

Rapha vs Chance demos from Warfactory 2008 BenQ Q3 Challenge
the ztn is from the semifinals, actually very close game though the final score may seem one sided, rapha is little lucky as you will find out as you watch the demo.
the hub and the tourney4 game is from the finals. tourney4 is really exciting and has sudden death finish. Overall nice display of skills :)

quakelive is ZERO fun to play for reasons beyond me, I dont blame developers they have done a great job to be honest, and the game is awesome, I happen to totally suck at it. I have decided to leave playing quake and most likely esreality as well.
cheers to fellow esreality users who never failed to entertain me, but its time to say good-bye.

One micro second of insanity I must say :D

In view of quake live tournament at quakecon and considering that quakelive is still a private beta is it a fair call to have a tournament ?
the possible solutions are:
1. Make a public release of QL beta, it still stays in beta phase and gets improved but not private anymore, I think the 2/3 week time frame is not that bad for gamers since it is not much different from quake 3 anyway should not take that much time to adapt.
2. Disallow all beta testers from participating.
3. Put more emphasis on the fact that it is not world apart from quake 3 and people should be able to pick it up on the word GO and do not distinguish between beta testers / non testers. this argument has problem if they use some new 1v1 map, the remake of older ones are not a problem.
Though many will be facing problems in option 3 since they would not be able to use their q3 cfg right away and might not feel comfortable. But I feel this can be tolerated since I recall in the beginning of quake 4 there were tourneys which allowed players only use gui based menu options to configure cfg and nothing else.
Also reminds me of the infamous Michael "winz" Bignet incident, who infact used a custom cfg when likes of toxic and cooller were stuck with gui.
option 1 is reasonable imho since ID had held tourney on Q3test around 1999, which in essence was a beta, and not a finished game....but was it public ? I dont know ..back in 1999 I was not into quake.
Can we have a quick ESR poll ?

Ok, I know this will sound like whine but trust me it really is not. I am not a good dueler, not even a decent one probably......but I like to enjoy the game as much as anybody, when playing duel (ofc with people near my skill level only, am not talking about pro/ wannabe pros) , but nowadays its becoming tougher and tougher to have fun. There is a whole new breed of players (I have nothing against them, guess they also enjoy the game but not necessarily the way I do) who are "okay" in important aspects of the game but nothing exceptional but they all have one thing in common, they are semi-decent at dodging stuff at medium distance and have a constant 32-34ish lg. So the situation is ..for somebody with shitty aim like me to have a shot at winning the match/ keep it close atleast have to super cautious at timing stuff and not getting exposed in open grounds. cause they are damn good at taking all health away in one go from a distance where
a) even if I rocket they get dislodged but still stay in lg range and continue their job
b) railing does work but one miss means am totally screwed
c) other weapons also work in certain situations but the lg guy generally succeeds in his goal.
d) I tried lg also but either i) my lg aim is shit (never get more than 25-26) acc or ii) my connection has spikes / PL some goddamn thing cant grip them so well.....I get so scared of being out-lged in an lg to lg fight ...I rather stick to rocket.
I know a good dueler should be able to chose fights and stuff like that but if you are facing constant 32-34 lg like always once u make a mistake in lg tracking, one ms of extra exposure..etc.. and in maps like dm6 once control is lost it takes time to regain.
I sometimes get pissed losing against these guys not because their lg but the slight mistake I made somewhere that they used to regain control...but nowadays its mostly these lg fights that I lose pretty consistently, even the ones where my instinct / experience tells I should have clearly won. Any tips / suggestions on choosing fights / not exposing to lg monsters will be appreciated.
P.S. I sounded pretty serious here probably but I am not that serious when I play and also dont mind losing over and over against some guy who is controlling a map so well that I got to give it to him but this breed of players whom I think I can control but they win some sneaky lg battle somewhere that they should not even have won sometimes do piss me off and destroys the fun of the game.
this is the gtv demo of yesterday's produels final, this is one big demo continuing through the entire final. Guideline for watchers using /timescale
1. first ~14 mins hub3aeroq3 rapha beats griffin
2. next 15 mins the amazing ztn match ( the one already posted)
3. next 15 mins hub3tourney1
4. Some stupidity regarding what scheme to use for grand final (2 set of bo3's or bo5, there was even proposal to finish of with only one bo3 with griffin as winner :) timescale this part away.
5. the final ztn game which was a kind of complete whitewash, recommended if you like fast paced action.
first one is against karabaxor (which is karabas, a quite well known player in NA servers, change nicking I think) this demo is not that fun since it has lots of rail abuse and czm's rustyness is even more clearer here. I have the demo from about 5 minutes into the game.
second one seems to be against a lower tier player called [x]coy who gets a hard pounding. this ones a mvd.
