Against all odds, Brood War is still standing strong. Matter of fact, it's almost like SC2 never got released (one can dream). Another testimony to longevity of Korean BW is Afreeca Starleague 2016. The qualifiers are over and all of the 16 participating players are known. Starleague starts tomorrow, 05:30 CDT, 17 July 2025 and lasts until September 4th.

The Starleague is loaded with good players, most notable ones being

Flash and

EffOrt. Total prizepool is cca ~ USD $21000. All games will be streamed on Afreeca's twitch channel. The English commentary will be provided by Tasteless & Artosis.

This year the inaugural QuakeCon is taking place on August 4-7th in Dallas Texas and is preceded by the FACEIT Road2QuakeCon on July 16-17th!

A total of eighteen North American players will battle it out in the FACEIT Road2QuakeCon Duel Tournament, as a warm-up for QuakeCon 2016.

In the first two rounds, the players will be placed in a best-of-three bracket, to narrow the player count down to eight. The final eight players will be placed into two best-of-three double elimination groups. The top two of each group progress to the best-of-five semifinals.

A total of $2,000 is up for grabs, and all the action will be brought to you by

Attention CA Players!

You may have noticed that the bot in #capickup went offline some time ago due to the bot's creator being absent. As a solution,

un4x and

Drayan have kindly offered to adapt #tdmpickup to also host 4v4 Clan Arena pickups in addition to the existing 4v4 TDM and 2v2 TDM gamemodes.

Each pickup game consists of 2 maps played, each with a roundlimit of 10, with one map picker on each team. The bot gets player's TDM and CA ratings directly from QLStats.net, and the new CA servers are already online. All you need to do is join #tdmpickup, and type:

SPACEWARD is an all spacectf and skyward movie, a project that's been co-operated between two players who share the same taste in fine map-architecture,

mouse* and

creep.

This project began when I was contacted by mouse* asking if I would mind using his demos to create a movie. It didn't take long for me to accept his offer after I watched through his amazing democollection he sent me. As I by the time had a lot of spacectf demos collected myself, I proposed the idea of a combined movie surrounding in a sky/space-ish atmospehere. The result came out as good as we both imagined it.

While it took a lot of time for me to finally release the final piece, most of the work was done with the preperation of the scenes themself. Every skyward sequence in SPACEWARD have smooth moving clouds floating above the map. This effect could only (by my poor editing experiences) be rightfully made with rendering every scene twice, one with the floating clouds, and a second with a normal skyboxtexture halfly covered in greenscreen. A lot of effort was put into this, but it was all worth it in the end.

Big thanks to mouse* for giving me this pleasure to put my creativity in motion with his resources and help, and a shoutout to all my homeboys in space o/

Originally this movie was meant to be my last fragged by mouse* part since I'm only a filthy casual these days and I stopped collecting demos. My crappy notebook at that time was not strong enough to edit and render videos so I decided to outsource the project. I contacted several movie makers and knowing his editing skills I decided for creep. In fact, he offered to throw in his collected space demos and create a 2-map project. Knowing creep´s unreal skill as a player I said yes immediately of course. Many months later here we are and I am stunned by its quality and content.

Although I did not take part in any of the editing, creep constantly asked me for my opinion, proposed songs and sent me sample scenes so that I can honestly say I was very much involved in the project and contributed to its development.

All my heart and thanks goes out to my buddy creep who made this project possible with his superb frags and masterful editing. I hope many of you will enjoy it as much as I do.

QuakeCon is rapidly approaching, so in preparation I will be running a series of cups on the weekends leading up the event. In future competitions I will be accepting donations for a prizepool, to give people even more reason to practice hard and play their best!

The 2D demo viewer has come back to life! The code is all new, and here are the biggest differences compared to the old program:
- all Quake 3 and Quake Live demo formats are supported, from dm3 to dm_91
- no longer using Qt, the Windows version requires Direct3D 11 and the Linux version uses the GLFW library
- heat maps and some other stuff :)
- so far, I've worked on this new viewer alone

Gustafsson released Q1 SP Episode (10 comments)

In celebration of 20 Years of Quake, Executive Producer Jerk Gustafsson from MachineGames (Wolfenstein The New Order 2014), released a custom singleplayer mappack called "Episode 5: Dimension of the Past" last week. It contains nine small to medium-sized levels of various themes including a start map, a secret map and a deathmatch arena.

Readme

The mappack is a mix of Quake 1 original and later fan mapping trends. Unchanged are the Q1 textures, monster, sounds and soundtrack, to get the retro feel alive. The gameplay is very fluid. It also has good visuals and nice ideas and fights in it. Some secrets are hard to find. I played Q1 right before the new mappack so i can say for sure its a good one. For reactions of the release surf to the mapping site func_msgboard.

The runs in this movie are tool-assisted, utilizing scripts and special software. The game physics were not altered. Nonetheless, these records are excluded from the official rankings. The runs in this movie are performed on the maps from the competition DFWC2012.

This is my first movie and I have no editing skills, so please don't expect much. If you like scripted runs, I hope you like these =)
