Hej killar, could you first please introduce yourself and tell us about your Quake background.
kanin: Not much to say really, I'm kanin, also known as funnyb. The past few years (2005 and on) I've been playing cpm, as normal people should, but my roots are in the team fortress games.
To make a long story short, I went from Quakeworld Team Fortress -> Quake 3 Fortress -> Enemy Territory Fortress -> Threewave -> Promode -> QL.
tybalt: I actually always wanted a console, but my parents never wanted to grant this wish. For my 12th birthday I had wished for an N64 and I was almost certain I would receive one, but to my dismay they had gotten me a PC instead. I only played adventure games such as Alone in the Dark, Little Big Adventure, and all the Lucas Arts games.
I remember a friend telling me about a game called quake, and that you could play against eachother online. I had played FPS games in the past, but only experienced them in single player. I ended up buying quake, finding a ffa server ip on fragzone.se, joining the server and having the absolute time of my life. Probably ended up with 1 kill and 50 deaths, but that one kill sealed the deal for me. I was hooked, and I still am. =) Since then I have played everything from quake, counterstrike, wolfenstein, jediknight2, painkiller, quake3, etc etc. I have lived most of my 'grown up life' in the United States, so thats where I have played the most. Shout out to all my American quakers! :)
funnyb, you have converted to the dark side of vq3 now, do you enjoy it or do you miss cpm?
kanin: Well, both. I enjoy the competitive side of QL TDM at the moment, the recent rise of activity since the dreamhack announcement along with dravens #tdmpickup has done wonders for the TDM scene. Yet if the competition were there, I'd swap to cpm in a heartbeat. To be fair, I'd go back to either of the fortress games I've played too if I could, but I'm a competitive person and I need a challenge, which is what QL can offer me right now.
tybalt, was the role as organizer/manager important to you or did you see yourself as a player who takes care of that kind of stuff aswell?
tybalt: I never saw myself as a 'manager' and I actually laugh everytime I hear that expression used in regard to esports. Most people that know me know i'm pretty well off and I enjoy giving back to the community I love.
Most people have asked? Why sponsor a team or spend x amount of money on this person/team? I do it because I love the sport and because the people I have sponsored are good friends of mine. Reason-Gaming did well with me as a player, but I have to be honest and say that I can't compete with their current core of players. My passion is to play, so I wasn't going to sit on the bench and watch at dreamhack. This is why I joined up with the guys at doctor))) +1, some great friends and people I have known for quite some time.
doctor)))+1 is a relatively new team. How did you guys come together?
kanin: Through the magical influence of Dr. Snapcase and his fellow men! Naw, as far as I know it started out with snapcase, empish and fooki wanting a TDM team, then called Bernevings Heroes, and the remaining two of us(me and tyba1t) joined in shortly after that. Everyone knew someone in the team from before, so it felt pretty natural from day one.
tybalt: I have known snapcase and fooki since 2005. Snapcase and I actually lived together for quite some time during the CPL World Tour for Painkiller. Fooki used to come by and lan with us at times. As for funnyb and empish I knew of them but never on a personal basis. We actually brought funnyb into Reason-Gaming due to some of our players going inactive during the EMS season. He filled the spot and was a very stable player. When I saw that he formed a team with fooki and snapcase it only felt natural to join them instead of warming the noctis bench. :)
Dont wanna be a faggot, but what was wrong with your original name Bernevings Heroes?
kanin: I'm not at liberty to discuss such matters. Douche. :D
tybalt: Its all because of GBNC. Personally I don't even know why, its the doing of snapcase and funnyb.
You had good start into the Eurocup XXIII, beating bloodface in the first week, but will have to face xt and iM in your remaining Group Stage matches. Are you confident that you can make it into the playoffs?
kanin: I'd be very disappointed if we didn't! Poor shame that we had to get a default victory in our second week, but I feel confident that we're able to beat both xt and iM, if things go our way! Not saying we are going to win, but we are going to win.
tybalt: Right now I think we have a very good chance of making the playoffs. Both IM and xt will be very tough opponents. I think what plays into our favor is our practice regime and the actual amount of practice and analysis we put into each practice session.
I think you can expect pretty tight games and good play from all teams.
Whats your opinion about the issue of SG and MG balance in TDM?
kanin: I'd say I'm the kind of person who adapts instead of going /cry when it doesn't suit me, but gameplay wise I no doubt prefer the current settings over the previous ones. I really just wish we'd pick a setting, stick by it, and adapt to it. Yet if I'd have to pick, 4dmg mg any day, keep cpm4 playable!
tybalt: Right now I think its a good balance. SG is a lot more balanced with the last change and I think the mg is optimal now as well, the only thing that I think could be fixed in regards to mg would be to add more ammo. I personally love the fact that the cess style of play isnt as beneficial anymore. Anything that makes a game more tactical is a good thing in my book.
Lets talk about the LAN tournament that the whole TDM community is looking forward to: Dreamhack Summer
Fooki is not part of your linup, why?
tybalt: I am pretty sure we can convince him to come. Hes got school and other things on his plate so he isn't going to give a definite response at this particular time.
Whats your take on the Mappool? (Hidden fortress, Deep Inside, Intervention, Realm of Steel Rats, Grim Dungeons, Purgatory, Dreadful Place
kanin: I think overall it's a great mappool. I'm no fan of Hidden fortress, but in a way I'm glad its there. Each map provides a different kind of excitement, I think its great.
Oh and one of the main reasons that allowed me to actually pick up QL TDM, besides having an awesome lovable team, is the removal of Campgrounds. May that .bsp be kidnapped and murdered by Al-Qaeda.
tybalt: Honestly, I would be happier with a 5 map pool. I think this is mainly due to the quality of maps at this current time. I would drop cpm4 and dm20 without thinking twice about it. Dreadfulplace, purgatory, grim-dungeons, deep inside, and intervention are all quality maps with different styles. I know frs has made a map which I believe looks very promising. Also, I know 2k have made another map, which is on their website, that I think looks very nice. :)
How is the preparation going so far? Already excited for tournament?
kanin: I'd say we're by far the most active team in the scene at the moment, at first we played alot since a few of our players had no (vq3) tdm experience at all and we needed to get them up to speed, but we've just kept on rolling and hopefully it'll pay off! It's really just a friendsteam playing, and any success we manage to grab we'll take!
tybalt: We are really looking forward to this event and as for the preperation, just check our recent games and you'll see how motivated we are. :) I would easily say we are the most active tdm team in europe atm.
Do you feel confident that you can take on the big names or do you just wanna have a good time there?
kanin: Well, both. I don't think theres a single team we're totally uncapable of beating, but if we go out in round two I'll have an equally good time! Just leaves more time for gay chicken.
tybalt: Both, its about having fun and enjoying the opportunity to finally play tdm on lan again. I think we can put up a good fight against most of the top teams. We rely heavily on our teamplay and communication so I think if we are playing on our top level we can take on any opponent.
Who is your tournament favorite? (Signups so far)
kanin: Really hard to tell, there are alot of potential winners. I'd say it comes down to who's feeling most comfortable on the lan setups, along with preparation. Still too early to tell who's going to show up prepared and not, so we'll have to wait and see.
Oh what a dull, political answer. Lets say Reason.
tybalt: I would say a well practiced Reason-Gaming would be my favorite. I am not basing this on bias. I think they have the right mix of players and styles to beat everyone. As I said, its about the time and preperation they are able to put into it. (Word on the street is that noctis got a girlfriend so that will hurt them) :D
I also think Rage-Gaming have what it takes to win the whole thing.
Thanks for your time and good luck in your next matches!
tybalt: Thank you and keep up the good work! :)
Shout out to Yvonne and Ramon! doctor))) +1
