EDIT : going premium when their payment system works.
Annoyed by the fucking ads + i hope the contribution of all premium/pro players is gonna make id work harder on updates.
I'll buy premium, no problems. But then I expect some shift of attitude from id, because it won't anymore be some free beta that they made available for anyone, but a service that id software provides me for my money.
Certainly giving everyone (who pays) the ability to spawn servers seems like the first step. It would be trivial at that point to allow them to spawn lan servers, but ultimately that's a decision that id makes, although I don't see why they wouldn't. It'd save them time and money not to have to babysit lan servers themselves.
Depends how much better. If the bs i expect will be half as annoying i guess illjust pop in for a game now and again. If i see improvement and the game not splitting the community in half and good constant development + id dropping the retarded idea of making people pay to play on new maps, i will gladly subscribe.
well if its bs I'm sure most will feel the same way but they're going to charge for new maps regardless. They have to have some draw to make money, now they've got ppl chomping at the bit for new maps and other than spawning servers & inviting non-premium ppl to play on premium maps, that's going to be how they make money for better or worse unless they figure out something better.
Dont waste time replying someone with such sad argument, he stays safe on the lose side, where hes used to stand. Theres close to 50% people willing to pay that arent cheap asses, if 50% of that 50% = 25% of people playing the game buys an account i would say its a great start. Reading his post is enough. If you understanding you already to transform what is. No need to lower your own level interacting with lower lifeforms.
Its just his opinion, and i think it's justified. I bought the premium myself, but i can understand how Quake 3 owners who already bought their game are frustrated that now they have to pay money to play the exact same maps.
But what else can ID do? They need some kind of inducement so the standard users will be interested in buying a premium or pro account. Right now the pro's and con's are not many. If it would not be for the extra maps and Freeze mod, i don't think many people outside the Esports scene would pay for it.
Hopefully there will be more features in the future.
I'd pay $1000 to keep quake alive. I fucking love quake, however id is a different story, they are abusing the shit out of the community that loves them.
This is like coming home and seeing your puppy waiting for you all day from morning to night in the same spot, then kicking it in the face and laughing. That's fucked up man.
Love turns to hate really easily. Just think of all the cheating spouses that wind up getting their shit ruined when their significant other catches them.
another question: do you keep your premium/pro account when update pace will stay the way it is???
Its high likely the update progress will be slow as fuck...
I cant understand why pple are paying for somthing which can be played for FREE
paying for OLD maps
paying for OLD content
I would through my money out of the window instead of paying for OLD things I already have and use.
I still don't understand why people would pay for something they could get for free. If someone modded in a better front-end for Q3, QL players would be paying for worse than something free. I suppose the only real advantage to going QL over a better-modified Q3, would be Quakecon tournaments. But how long will they last, and what if other organizations chose the modded Q3?
Only time will tell if their move succeeds. If it fails, like practically everything else id has done since Q3, will the community 'stay the course' (a.k.a. keep the faith), or move to something else?
Do you have to pay for more than one alias? Do we pay the government to imprison us? That's what you get when business combines with government; some call it fascism. Anything that might damage profits is outlawed... including liberty.
Seriously though, why do people play QL but not Q3? If people figure that out, and implement whatever it might be into Q3, I don't see how QL could compete. Is the answer, that they think QL has a future and Q3 doesn't? Why would they think that, when the two are practically the exact same game? Is it nothing more than the hope of continued developer support? Why can't we produce that in Q3, to at least the necessary level? It's like the stock-market... everything is about investor confidence. People have more confidence in id software than they do in arQon or basically the zero other developers who actually do anything for Q3. If the community knew, Q3 would continue being developed, and tournaments would continue happening, wouldn't they be, at least, equally inclined towards playing Q3 as QL? Maybe it's just progress that keeps people going?
I am not paying anything until I can play on a turkish server.
having a minimum of 90 ping really sucks for playing the game with this netcode. I was busy taking steps to try to open some turkish servers (which would probably be paid by myself). But now If i am gonna pay to play qlive I would expect that they supply the server locations as well.
Proof that 50% of people would pay for last night's dinner vomited into a bag if the bag had the right brand name on it.
A truly sad state of affairs.
(play more promode - or osp for that matter, but lol at paying for a 10 year old game, or whining that you can't spawn servers in your home country o_0)
not exactly - I was a volunteer admin for a server host as well as releasing maps for pickup channels, so you've not gone entirely senile.
Anyway, what's wrong? Butthutt because I told you back then that handing control over to id was a dumb idea and you told me to gtfo? Surely you do now see what a bad idea QuakeLive is?
nope sorry, I still think the general concept is good.
The implementation leaves a lot to be desired, but as since that as been my opinion for quite some time, I am sure I said the same back then.
anyway, the back then and now is that I feel your opinion is affected by your affiliation with a server host.
Cause, as I recall you did, in the past, complain about id taking over their business .
I complained about them recycling product and destroying the community to make money from an ad feed. The loss of host business was secondary, except that now, as predicted, people are playing QL instead and whining like whores that they can't get a good ping.
Well who do they have to blame for that? Did they really expect id to provide the same diversity in server location or game content that we, the mod developers and server hosts, were doing, and had been doing for the better part of ten years?
Anyway - last night's announcement just went to prove the id software born of Carmack's ethics and preaching are long, long gone.
Oh. And CPM and OSP are still free, only half the servers have gone now, because their hosts went broke. gg ppl.
well, why shold i bother with the first half when you contradict it in the last sentence?
Yes, the server hosts probably offer better choices for locations, but they were still in it for the money.
People didn't want to spend money for servers with better pings in the past but instead were playing on the servers id offered for free.
Now they have to pay for those servers, to some degree, anyway.
So, they can go back to playing Q3 and renting servers for more money, paying your friends (I assume they are) or pay less for a worse ping but the ability to spawn servers in different locations.
It's all about money, your talk aout ethics can't really cover it up.
the independent hosts earned money off gamers just like id is doing now. And the server numbers were already decaying before QL.
The gamer did chose the QL server in the last years, time will tell if they do so now, go back to Q3 or start something else. You sniggering remakrs won't change that one bit.
thats classic cpm elitism and i have nothing against it.
But you dictating what is good and what is not does not help you cause.
I like cpm, or the cpma mod itself, but I also like vq3 and I always will. Currently the only way to play vq3 is Quakelive, so I'll pay for it if they meet my requirements in the future and it really does not matter what you constitute as good or not, it's just your opinion.
Plus it doesnt help that even though the community size of ql pales compared to modern warfare or something, it still beats trying to find a game of cpm by sitting around at irc waiting for people to !add or checking qtracker and hoping there is a server with people on it. I don't want to deal with these sort of things, I don't have the time anymore.
So yeah, it's not as simple as you try to make it out to be..
you missed his point entirely? it has nothing to do with cpm and vq3. i play both and i still think that barring id making significant updates in terms of maps (which im optimistic about) and content/front end (which i think is not going to happen at all, at least in quake live), i would still rather play cpma vq3 (substitute osp for old people used to shitty net code).
the real question is why did people start playing ql in the first place when they had q3 and if there's no real valid reason why (other than the - o everyone else is playing ql - sheep mentality), then why pay for ql when you can play q3?
ps: i play q3 and ql both. although i havent gotten a ql premium account yet, i most likely will partly because im a sheep with lots of sheep friends, and because ive played q3 for more than three years now and i would pay the 50$ simply for the great experience ive had with it so i'm willing to give id the benefit of the doubt and see where they go with it.
I prefer cpma vq3 over QL if I have to choose, but like I said above its quite a bitch to even find games for that nowadays and with QL its just a matter of logging on and jumping straight into action. The same is also true for cpm where you still have to wait as well. My preference of anything cpma is voided by the fact that I don't have time anymore to wait for 10 to 30 minutes. This is my personal reason of playing more ql then cpma at the moment and his point (although valid for what is more superior) just cannot apply for someone with my conditions.
As for why people play QL over cpma, I doubt there is one real specific reason... It's probably a mash up of:
1- ease of use: fully automated, compared to installing everything manully for cpma and then getting a server browser as well to find games
2- hearsay popularity: if you don't follow esr or challenge-tv, or you don't stumble on some of the cpm movies it's not likely you'll ever hear about cpma, but atm qlive has some promotion going and people tend to flock to what is "new" and is actively advertised.
3- Tourneys are all ql atm: Again because it is "new" and development is focused on qlive (does not matter how bad or slow the development, remember q4?) people are more likely to play qlive over cpma. Call it promotion or sheep mentality but there it is.
I can probably think of more reasons but I wanna get some breakfast :D
apart from ease of use both your other reasons fall into the same "we will play it (use it for tournaments) since its new and everyone else is using it" sheep mentality i mentioned.
as for ease of use, i can see how ql might be easier to use for a newb but for me q3 is just as easy to use as ql. and i can actually find games with people of my skill level just as easily in q3 as in ql. in fact games in team modes are usually easier to find in q3 than ql. (granted i play cpm).
as i said im not against the ql project. in fact im all for it. BUT i still agree with ninemil that as it stands now it isnt really a product worth paying for if youve already bought q3. i am however willing to pay for it simply cos the idea behind the project is good and id can actually do a lot more with it (stuff like integrated gtv, something irc like within the browser, content based shit a la myfacetube all on a single platform) and the fee is low enough that its a risk im willing to take. atleast for a year.
edit: btw when i said you missed his point i simply meant that the justification you provided for your playing ql doesn't really address any of the issues he raised. thats all.
He said what he said because he partly replied to me (comment above his) about the server spawning by country thing, which felt a bit personal.
Anyways, we are both just theorizing and saying why WE would or would not pay for it. in your case it is that it is already easy for you to set up cpma and get game going. For me it is because I do not have time anymore and the faster way to get some quake time is qlive currently. These are all personal reasons and it just depends if qlive caters to someone or does not by personal preference.
Does this justify them charging for 10 year old maps etc, I agree it does not and we have the right to personally judge the ethics behind id's decision, but if I put all that aside qlive delivers what I need at the moment, except local servers (which is why i will never pay).
They took all you had and are giving it back piece by piece for a price. Because the whole thing is centralized, it will be obviously worse than what you could do yourself in terms of either lan tournaments, server locations, access to maps, etc.
very true, yet all I want is to play the game that I love with as many people that I can, and unfortunately qlive is the option if I want vanilla rules.
Atleast the cpm people have each other and they don't have to bother with qlive :)
Prolly gonna buy a premium account. 18€ a year is worth the amount I will play the game and I don't have to care about server maintance and this whole shit. I mean people pay 8€ for a fucking lousy drink, spent 20€ a weak on cigarretes and watch a movie for 7€ from time to time. Still they complain about a few bucks. Just think about how much time you spend to play the game and have fun then divide the played hours by $24 and you will realise how cheap this is compared to other enjoyments -.-
I bet a majority of the "going back to q3" people have already paid for a premium sub. How do you "go back to q3" anyway? Play on empty servers? The only servers I see people on in Q3 are Urban Terror or other mods like that.
Premium for me.
I think it's a perfectly fair move from ID. If you only dabble with the game from time to time then you can still play it for free. If you play it regularly then the monthly fee is a small price to pay for the amount/value of entertainmnent Quakelive offers. Let's be realistic, for the more hardcore gamer, Quakes one of the best gaming experiences this world has to offer. Personaly, if you ask me, Quakes the best game ever made.
As with music and films, I watch and listen for free where I can but when I feel something deserves paying for because of its producer/s efforts then I gladly pay or buy for their product. The exact same mentality applys here, Quakelive deserves the tiny yearly subscription of my money for the entertainment value it offers in return. We've had it for free for over a year and it's still free now to a certain extent - pretty much the whole game's free.
I'm going to gladly pay for a premium account :)
How about this... why don't we, all the experienced 'pro' players, leave QL to the newbs? We can just play Q3, and when QL players want to 'go pro', they can start playing Q3.
izi: sponsors don't understand why they should support a small community playing a 10 year old game;
ql is somewhat "new" and interesting because of that browser game thingy, all major gaming sites at least mentioned ql going public beta and therefore ppl (sponsors) know it exists
There is no turning back to q3 :/. People that voted: "return to q3", will play it for a while, then when they see tourneys/money/players/development stays with quake live... they will return to it :/. Sadly, this is the future. I was about to buy premium from the beginning, but I am disappointed what I get for it.
do you think we are all going to become a pro gamer and looking forward to big LAN festivals with prize money? This dream belongs to the ql kids. Obviously it is your reason why you are playing ql :)
btw q3 mods got a lot more updates and maps are release on an regular basis. so what?
keep being disappointed or change to q3. Where the fun is ²
I am more disappointed than you, but when we go back to q3(not cpm), and we get struck playing same 50 people all over again... while ql grow(more players subscribe etc), we will realize that 2$ per month isn't that much.
As for your conclusion: I am too old to play quake live serious enough to be competitive on highest level.
My point being that many of the people I play Q3 with aren't affected at all by the hype QL produces. If anything, that hype with tournaments and prize money etc. just falls on those 15 year old kids with dreams of getting sponsored. A few months later they grow out of it.
Can't forget adding the ability to put on custom maps on said LAN servers if user-created LAN servers were possible. But, hey, it's not like id pays their employees to be rational.
Maybe id just doesn't know what the pro-community needs? They never made any professional caliber games. They built the base of Quake 3. Imagine trying to use only baseq3 for professional use. It doesn't have any of the features or tweaks we need. Whether ladders, leagues, tournaments, or mods, all the professional and competitive elements were added by third-parties. And with Quake Live, it's still mostly like that... except worse, because they practically don't allow any third-party support.
Quakecon does not count as a first-party professional competition, because they would have used even the worst version of baseq3. Quakecon has never been anything more than a means for id to promote their new products, and entice people into buying their old products in hopes of winning prize-money.
Legitimate, real professional competition, to any degree, has all come from third-parties. What it shows, is that the community actually knows what it's doing (for the most part), and id doesn't have a clue (or doesn't care), and yet the community keeps looking to id as if id knows and the community doesn't.
I'm paying for the opportunity to play with thousands of other quakers, without having to bother about addons, mods, mappacks, patches and servers. It's all just there.
i can't start the game in fullscreen :) the advertisement is windowmode, and the game actually is loading in the background, i can hear myself spawn before the advertisement is done, but as soon as it fullscreens me automatically after the advertisement, i get kicked whining about some .pk3's
It's actually almost to the point where not playing Quake is better than playing Quake Live, especially consider how epic the shittiness of the community is overall. Sure, you have plenty of decent human beings playing this game, and playing it at a high level, too. But I don't think I can ever go a whole day playing this game without running into some incredibly lame people spamming binds that aren't even funny or making racial slurs or some other shit. And it's like the ratio of these people to actual decent people is tilting in favour of the former more and more everyday...
inb4 strangers telling me "you know, you're a douche too...". I'm pretty strongly influenced by my surroundings, if you know what I mean. :)
The people have to decide what they want. Do they really want pro-gaming, or do they just want pretend pro-gaming? Or maybe, they don't care about pro-gaming, and are just happy with an active community and a decent game? It's nonsense to think, if you make money doing it, you're a professional. A three year-old could make money playing games. I could give a kid $5 for playing against a bot, win or lose. Does that make the kid a professional player?
The fact that in QL, id has done nothing for audiences, goes to show their motivations. Watching demo's is a pain in the ass. You have to find the obscure demo-directory, and then do something with the name (either rename it to something you can remember, or possibly copy and paste it), and then go into QL, then open a game, then finally, you can watch the demo. What kind of crap is that? Why are there so many obstacles for audiences? There should be no obstacles, and the avenue's should all be open, and getting from point A to point B should be as easy, smooth, fast, and comfortable as possible. Not only are demo's a pain, but there isn't even a GTV (with or without built-in commentary). If there's no audience, where will the money come from? Sponsors are paying, so they can reach audiences. No audience - no sponsors. It's very simple - if you want real pro-gaming, you need an audience.
It seems like the people here don't really want pro-gaming. They'd rather have pretend pro-gaming, or just an active, united community of any kind.
it's so cheap to go premium and a little more expensive to go pro... it's not like you're breaking the bank. This game has been free for 2 years (?) and lots have played and enjoyed it.
Going back to Q3 is an option... but more players are playing QL, a quick and easy friends list to join games, Skill matched servers to let newer players learn and the same map content as q3 with a better feel to it.
I'm pleased that I brought a pro account, I can invite my poor friends (funnyb) to duel me on the premium maps and spawn private servers so no retards join and interfere.
I can't see ID retracting their payment for the game, so for the people complaining about it might as well go back Q3 and just let us QL pLayers carry on... It's starting to sound all too much like a cpm/vq3 split B<
next step will be (QL will look like this before summer 2011):
the so called free maps will decrease to 8 or 10 maps and much less bandwidth. it will be impossible to watch demos for free. you must pay to see cypher getting beat up by cooller on aerowalk on a demo. the price for prem/pro will increase, sneaking up with a dollar from time to time....no?....yes i bet it will, you wanna bet me? why do i think that??? ID Software have reach its goal now, now they own us...i can´t say that its wrong i can only congrats them, this was their goal from the begining...
I want to bet with you if for your win all of your four statements have to be true by end of 2011. That is:
-less bandwidth than now (need to measure now for comparison)
-less than eleven free maps
-paying for demos
-increased price for pro (do you mean doller per month or year? )
2nd "id own us"?!? What kind of drugs are you using dude i fkn wonder. They earn money by making and selling fkn video games. If you want to play a fkn video game pay them with MONEY not your ass or anything similar. Noone is forcing you to play. It s their product they can do whatever they want. Be happy you got this much for free.
Why dont you get your lazy ass moving and make us new quake or something for free, organize a tournament with uber high streaming quality while you r at it for FREE and see how that goes for you buddie.
Some ppl ...
and 3rd not much to pay 30 euros or whatever for a game i m spending so much time with. WIth 30 euros you cannot even get drunk in pub.
p.s. and dont talk shit how maps are old game is old etc you play it now... It s renewed content someone had to do it and it costs money, servers cost money etc. etc. they brought game back aLIVE and it s a fact.
why so angry...prick? do you have your monthly period?
#150 is just my opinion, what u say stands for you..!
3,99x12=48 dollars/year, for a pro account is what some regular DVD game costs, once. you´re welcome to pay 48dollars/year (todays value) i´m not judging anybody if they want to pay to play, it was a matter of time, spreading servers acorss the globe will cost money.
it is just, that Carmac said once that QL will be a free browser game, instead there will be advertising in the game, ok some of it is still free but...
QL is a great game and lightyears ahead of Warsow and other free online games. I think that if I going to pay for a game online it will be a new fresh game not an old upgraded version of a working game that i already paid for once...
"for a game i m spending so much time with" - get a life!
I m always amazed by ppl saying get a life not knowing anything about persons life and yet those ppl are posting on same page playing the same game etc. My english isnt native so i still wonder what i ve said wrong. Should i rephrase it so your think i m uber cool with multiple lives? Your post looks like conspiracy theory so ask yourself about life.
And why so angry? Cause i cant believe how much shit you ve put in one post. You paid for Q3 right? So go play it and have fun with it. With regular DVD game you dont get server.
And since you are still clueless about why the game isnt free (note that they planned to charge for PRIVATE SERVERS no matter free or not) Carmac said they ll support game via ingame advertising but global crisis affected that field like any other so they made no income of it and had only loss so that s why you have to pay for "new" "old" whatever maps. --- > Either that or bb QL
Where does the money go? Does it all go towards new maps? Certainly, having newer and better maps could be worth the money. There's a lot of potential still, in how maps affect the game. Like, why aren't there any 1v1 maps with two RA's? Think about it... an RA on each side of the map, with a MH right in the middle. That way, there is no 'tyrant' position, and you would only really be fighting over the MH.
