a workmate of mine has a dell, a two year old stationary, and he said it's damn near impossible to get a hold of them. might be him then, or some unlucky circumstances.

yeah I think it depends on what kind of warrany and support you have. I guess the most basic version of the support is pretty shitty.

Don't know what it is like in Sweden but in Australia their support is fantastic.

I own a XPS M1530 and I had a HD corrupt on me so I rang them up and after a few calls being unreturned, which did piss me off abit. Then they rocked up replaced the HD and my screen which had been cracked due to my dropping it no questions asked.

Warranty is a must ;x

i'm quite sure everyone makes mistakes. i've talked to loads of people will recently bought dell computers without problems :).

flight companies get sued aswell but that doesnt always mean its shit to fly with them if you catch my drift..

It isn't. A workmate ordered a dell in August and got it... a week ago, after an incredible amount of emails exchanges and after they sent a computer with the screen and keyboard broken.

A lot of people jumped on the Dell bandwagon when they took off with their "Dude, you're getting a dell." campaign, and I've heard nothing but bad stories since. Let's not forget the terrible business they do with Alienware, either. Remember when they tried to pay Hexus for a good review? It was on ESR...

It just doesn't seem like a good idea to throw down a large chunk of change on a company with a lot of bad press surrounding it. Sure, it might go well for you (as there are always the "THAT NEVER HAPPENED TO ME" stories), but what if it doesn't?

if ur taking it to work make sure to check the weight and size of the laptop, some of rock's are pretty large.

Well, it really depends on what you want to do. You said you want to game with it, but what do you play? Unless you dig games like Far Cry 2 ([-]), do you even need that kind of power?

I just bought a netbook (HP Mini) and while it's on the weaker side of netbooks, I much prefer it to a full laptop.

I've got a dell xps m1530, it has the best laptop case I know of. It's thin, metal finish, magnesium chassis, keeps cool despite high-end hardware. The screen is solid and doesn't wobble a bit after 9 months... and I've never seen that before, including in thinkpads. Last month It slipped out at shoulder height and hit the asphalt sideways and an angle, all I got is scratched magnesium corner and a somewhat wavy bent speaker cage which I can take off and flatten, but cba. I recommend you get it with a 1920x1200 or LED display. I've not seen ANY other 15'' laptop to offer that either. It's really awesome for everything, especially programming.
If anyone has heard of another laptop that can offer that, let me know.
Lastly its not FUGLY and thick as fuck, like virtually all "gamer" laptops I've seen. (i.e. any other dell, especially dell's studio)

Yeah I do, but my problem is much more severe. In games such as Tf I will experience fps drops in excess of 100 frames, killing my performance.

But on the topic of support I just rang up and asked for a new cooling unit and heatsink and the technician is here on thursday, 2 days time. Pretty awesome if you ask me ^^

keke didn't bother to read all the comments but since you are gonna use it for gameZ then you should stick to dells PC but i would have suggested a Macbook pro for work etc.

HP or lenovo. Never seen them break down and they got awesome support even for minor things. Can run almost everything as well.

Zepto computers often break down and got shit support. Mac is shit for games and is generally shit. Dells are expensive but probably ok. Asus computers are weird. Packard Bell got weird key setup. Hmm, That's my experience from my uni course group anyway.

You're being way too general. Every comapny has good and bad apples, imho. It's important to read up on particular models.

Got a 1530 a year ago, has worked really well for me. Runs Source games well (L4D is sweet), Crysis and UT3 are playable with everything dropped down, Quakelive works really well, and it does well using unrealed or hammer :)
Battery life is pretty good providing you understand that any gaming laptop will be dead in an hour if you're just playing a game. With screen brightness down can browse with wireless for hours, just make sure you full discharge/recharge the battery regularly.

Main thing I like about it is that it's genuinely portable unlike so many other gaming laptops I saw. It won't draw jaws on shit like crysis but you need a brick to do that anyway. It's also very customisable when you buy it so you can cut out a fair bit of crap you don't want.

About Dell's support, I'll be able to give you more info in a couple of days, my DvD drive started throwing up a detection error, emailed them, they sent me detailed instructions on taking the laptop apart and reseating the drive...haven't done it yet though, enquiring about my warrenty situation first :P

oooh one last thing, it will come with Vista, and I couldn't find XP drivers for it when I looked, so if you *really* hate vista and can't ever use it, look elsewhere. I've found Vista is fine providing you switch off the UAC :P

btw make sure you get the 8600GT graphics card, I read up about the cards when I was buying and the 8400 is pretty poor but the 8600 is fine.
