Just an observation:

Why does everyone seem to use some cryptic three-letter-nickname nowadays? Because it's cool?
I can't remember half of the top people of any competitive scene because they bear nicknames such as "zsx", "crv" or "nhsb" (okay, that's 4 letters). Always looks like someone just choked letters.

zsx used to be ac1d, crv is crevardo but since he's been using "crv" for ages I guess everyone knows him by this nickname, and same probably goes for bishon a.k.a nhsb. :)

Dunno where that comes from, probably a combination of laziness and the fact that it's a bit more humble, as opposed to K1ll3r666. :o
Probably a reaction to that sort of nicknames somehow. :)

Hey, we're one of the biggest franchises in the world, but instead of making a proper tourney we use a weird ass shitty game mode nobody in their right mind cares about!

For now I think CA and CTF are the most popular game modes.

To be fair, on cb it looks like TDM/1on1 are larger than CTF. Anyway, I see why they would choose CA since its easy to understand and is popular among casual players.

Didn't seem like the two finalists were really camping to me.

Of course that's only true because we didn't have to play dm14 each round. :P

5295 players has won 75 CA matches,
1614 players has won 75 TDM matches and
2112 players has won 75 Duels.

Unfortunately there is no such stats for CTF to compare with but it at least shows how very popular CA is. The closest thing in terms of numbers in CTF is

"Accumulate 100 Capture Medals." 8258 players (1% of total) have earned this award.

This is of course, just stating how popular a game mode is, not how many active teams etc it may have.

Why would it be twice as hard? TDM timelimit has been 15, a CA game lasts roughly between 10-19 minutes.

It's definitely wrong regardless. One player is enough to totally fuck up one team in CA. Even though the less experienced CA players won't understand why or how one team can lose, I can easily tell when that happens, and it happens a lot. :)

A very rough hint - when teams try to regroup, mostly - would be someone having twice the score of his mates, twice their frags (or more), and the least deaths of his team. Usually means he does his score on the dead bodies of his mates, and even though he's got the best score, he's probably making his team lose.
Even if his score makes him look good and he's the one whining at his "noob team". :)

Things can go fast as long as there are mostly half-decent CA players involved, and one black sheep is totally enough to fuck up the balance between two teams.

and in tdm, there are the guys the try to steal all the armors and weapons from their teammates.

Anyway, that award was for 75 wins, so as a sucky player even if you had no influence on the outcome you'd need to play 150 games. That's 24 hours at the very least.

Well since CA often is played 6v6 and TDM 4v4 Id say a bad player has a bigger impact in TDM, talking about public of course, even though it would still be true for competetive.

Also, about the camping thing. Just because one team happened to not camp doesnt change the fact that the mode gives no reason whatsoever to leave a positional advantage = it will always be a potentially very campy gametype with current ruleset.

Only if you're willing to. It takes two team to camp. poc met wm in finals and we are probably two of the 3 or 4 most agressive teams there was in this cup.
Of course it takes more practice to be able to play agressively than to camp. Any newbie team can flee a zone and setup their tents somewhere in the map, especially on a map like dm14. Then again it's true for pretty much any gametype.
Even CPM's had its fair share of campers and +back specialists.

One could always tell you you can count on a PU cap in CTF and sit back on your base the rest of the time, or that you can just secure one part of the map in TDM and not even bother getting elsewhere.

I can hardly think of a more campy game than TDM on dm6. The last few times I played it at least it summed up to : lock the upper part of the map (rail, bridge, RL, RA), get rails for everyone, don't even bother going to quad - just spam it brainlessly when it spawns to kill the quad runner - and you're set, gg. Isn't that camping ?

in ca you are given armor and weapons and some time to avoid getting spawn raped... all reasons why tdm is so much harder on newbs.

My point is the same though - you can camp in pretty much any gametype, especially if the maps (and the settings) favor it.
And in TDM there's a lot of zone control involved. It can easily become a campfest, including between good teams - I've seen ugly dm7 games recently, while I thought it had become the ultimate cess map, it wasn't so true anymore in the last few games I've witnessed during the Q3 TDM NC for instance.

And there are also the teams who favor an agressive playstyle, no matter the gametype.
I can even name a french CS team who mostly played FFA on skill and habits alone, rushing through the maps - yes, at CS speed, alright - and beat the likes of aAa.cs in LAN.

It's all a matter of putting some thought in the way you play and really wanting to play that way - put some practice on top of it and you're set.

Most of the time people tend to think it's "brainless" to rush and play agressive and at the same time complain that said game is bullshit because it's easier to camp - well, it can't be both at the same time.
It IS harder to play agressively regardless of the game you play, it will always be easier to just sit back (once you got weapon and armor if needed) and set traps and only get involved in fights in which you have a strong advantage, than to make a move and take (calculated) risks. It's just common sense.
Doesn't mean you can't do what it takes to be able to play agressively if that's what you favor. I know I've been doing it for ages in CA, mostly in the top leagues last few years.

I don't think CA particularly favors camping compared to other games, many of which I've tested quite intensively.
I'll agree on the fact that it's easier to give it up because one didn't succeed once, and to blame it on the game, rather than on the fact that one didn't find the way to deal with campers without camping himself.

Don't try to make the CA gametype so obscure and hard-to-master. link1n was easily your best CA player in the FRA lineup although you played hundreds of hours more than he did in that specific gametype.

I won't comment on your participation in a NC (which was it ? How well did BEL do ?), but I can remember seeing you play and I know for sure you have little idea of what matters in CA.

I'm not making CA very complex, in fact the concept is as simple as it gets indeed. It's probably the most newbie-friendly Quake gametype next to instagib. As far as understanding the basics go, anyway.
But even in the simplest of concepts there can lie a certain level of complexity. It doesn't take much. And you definitely don't get it when it comes to CA. :)

To roughly sum it up, it is comparable to RTS's micromanagement.
A few details can have a huge impact, and there are quite a lot of details a newbie spamming pills will have wrong - basically he's doing nothing useful, even in a public server game, not to mention in an actual clanwar.

How do you use your firepower, what weapon do you use in which case, what happens if one of your teammates gets raped quickly, or another is doing damage from behind in a regroup but someone else is (ideally) taking damage instead of him ? How do you place yourself in a regroup, do you just randomly pile up in the same room, or do you try to use your surroundings, find key spots where you can have a real impact without getting raped in a second without having done enough damage ?
What do you do when the opposite team spreads around the map instead of regrouping, how do you handle it ? What if they regroup but always change room to avoid the fight ? How do you handle shit spawns when there are annoying spawns on one map ? And so on...

In an actual CA clanwar any newbie will have a huge impact and fuck his team up if he's not at the right place at the right time doing the right thing, just as in any TDM game, simple as that.
You might not get it but don't tell me any newbie spamming pills can have a positive influence with his random hits and not so much negative influence while he isn't doing anything useful and the opposite team is dealing damage and killing his mates meanwhile.

And don't get me started on that best player debate - in terms of pure aim link1n was easily one of the best players if not the best, and he was also easily the one with the biggest scores.
But Koj was, in my opinion, by far the best player of that lineup. Not only does he have the superior aim, but he's always where you need him, he takes his share of damage without getting raped, hence avoiding that his mates get raped, he's always active and dealing damage as fast as he can, giving a hand to his mates when he can - lk is no match in all those aspects, despite his wits, excellent aim and the fact that he often has good scores thanks to dealing a lot of "free" damage on his mates' back. :o)

CA might be a simple concept but a lot of people seem to get it wrong nonetheless - and the fact that there is no clear objective apart from killing the nmy before he kills you does not necessarily make it a lot easier to get than deathmatch and its clear objectives and means to win.
In a CA game, teams have to define their means to win by themselves, and it's not as easy as most people seem to think. I've seen enough teams - especially that handful of OSP teams who thought they were gonna rampage through those CA newbies - give up and disband out of losing over and again without understanding why. :)

I would consider myself a TDM player, and I didnt play in this cup, but i still (probably, not at home so cant check to be sure) have way more CA matches than TDM, mainly because public TDM is painful and the pickups lack activity.

I'm not talking about sign-ups. QuakeLive is the newest game there and it's still in the beta process. Warcraft 3 is kinda dead (less & less cups & top players this year, it's almost like only the chinese ones are left). CS doesn't really need a fnatic 50$ cup, you wouldn't have any top teams playing. CoD4 -> CoD6 ?
And as far as I remember, fnactic is mainly a CS site (maybe with some warcraft 3). Seems like you're trying to show that you "care" about the dead quake to convert the "quakers" into fnactic fans so that they see the poker stuff on your site and register... Registrations were free. 150 euro isn't much, maybe it's symbolic but at least it's something. To have bigger prizes they would have to make players pay to compete. I don't think a lot of players are willing to do that for an online cup.

i watched a couple of matches out of boredom and "competitive" CA is the most disgusting piece of shit ever and even one of the commentators made me laugh with his comment

Some maps with U turns, sharp corners and rooms with too few exists should never be played in CA to begin with. Such as DM14 or DM7, as they just result in team one standing in one room, spamming nades into room two.

The only large maps that works for CA is DM6, CA1, CA2 and to some degree DM20 (as well as some smaller maps). If other maps were included in the map pool, that was a mistake by the organizers, not a flaw in the game mechanics.

CA is only entertaining on certain maps where aggressive play can actually pay off...I think ca1/ca2 are the only maps in the game where this can happen. That said I still don't like any maps in QL for ca at all :( dm14 in a CA competition is fucking retarded...

Agreed about dm14. I have to say that pcm got analed by having to play dm14 vs a TDM team in a bo1. :o
And on the fact that we need more decent CA maps. And 4on4.

DM20 is a good map too, though. In my opinion the best CA map so far, especially as long as 5on5 is the standard.

few things went wrong in this cup though..

Seeding was lousy loosing drz ,sexeh and procedemus so early in the cup, when they are clearly candidates to win, was a shame. We missed alot of nice bo3 matches with these teams. Instead we got alot of campy clans winning the bo1 dm14 maps.
That unfortunately made this cup into a boring camp fest. Bo1 should be used wisely, best combined with a loosersbracket (and without forcing some of the worst maps in qlive).

Commentary was OK, even though they didn't know the maps very well.
but following the same team battling through dm14 and dm20 camping every match, is just stupid. Mix it up a bit, don't follow the same team all the way. You had some technical problems too with the stream, but I guess you already knew that..

The homepage was updated fast and nice. That was awesome..
Even though you might have to reconsider the signup process which is long and overcomplicated.

final was nice and very entertaining, no draw rounds no + 25min it was all quake.. gg

imo changes to make are:
- slower rockets
- 7-7-7 LG
- Make it 4on4 or 3on3 at the most

why the hell someone would even bother to play CA with current setup? atm its all about spamming rockets and whoring rail.. Its made too easy to just "fix" ur mistakes by rocketjumping out of every fucking situation

Slower rockets for a faster gameplay ? Mate, rocket launcher is not just a spamming weapon. You can actually aim with it. Seriously. I mean it. :o

as it is now, its fucking easy to spam since rockets fly so fast that they will hit anyway, even though "spammer" wouldnt be skilled at all... Also dodging rockets is nearly impossible with current speed.

I think rocket speed is fine..its just the amount of splash that imbalances the game, ... they should take a lesson from the cq3 rocket...thats about as perfect as rockets can get.

Nope, slower and easy dodgeable rockets such as in UT2004 tend to more hitscan weapon usage. This means more rail and LG usage. Leave it as it is. It's just CA or the other gametypes will get unbalanced too.

Rockets in QL are almost hitscan weapons :p

yeah... thats kind of my point, with hitscan weapons u cant just "spam", if you hit opponent you need to see him. In fact just by boosting LG dmg game would come a lot faster, since lowaim newbies would be raped and they just couldnt "runaway" in every fucking situation 8DD
