Yeah cheating in ET is way more acceptable than it is in QL. I'm so happy to see how people are reacting to zeroql and all the other cheaters too, just not tolerating them. In ET pretty much everybody, atleast 80-90% of the playerbase of 2011-2010 (that's when I quit) have cheated in the past. Some of them on publics, some of them vs friends, some of them in random pracs, some of them winning eurocups or serious shit (vila zeto jetro etc are this category).. Every topteam atleast was filled with cheaters, were they ex or current makes no difference to me really. Totally impossible to form a team that has no (ex-)cheaters innit =P ET is a smaller than QL but there's probably more selfbusts (vila in this category, too) in ET than busts in QL altogether. Why? ET cheats indeed accessible and at the time people used punkbuster it wasn't worth anything (you could just go and search for undetected free cheats). Also there was a no-pb period when there was no anticheat at all and the amount of cheaters rose. Also I think there were probably loads of cheaters who cheated because they thought everybody else was cheating too. Another reason is people accepting and tolerating cheating, they don't really care if the play with cheaters either. I, for example, never during my active days would tolerate a cheater on a public server and would do everything to make his playing a misery (kick-votes obviously either fail or he keeps reconnecting), but I was always the only player fighting against the cheaters. Sometimes people would kick me instead, because I was teambleeding the cheater or something. Another little thing, in ET (sometimes in QL too, though) people thought that if the cheater wasn't playing good, he isn't worth kicking/fighting against. ET was a teamgame too, so most players wouldn't notice when there's a cheater in the opposing team (whereas in QL 1v1 it catches your eye faster and easier).

The factors I just mentioned..? And my way of counting cheaters is different from the others but my way of counting is right imo, I know only like 10-20 ET players _well_, but every single one of those have cheated in some way. And that makes it 90-95% already D: Also you can't get realistic gallups on how many have actually cheated, those who tried cheats on a public for a few times have absolutely no reason to confess, but as I'm close "friend" to those 10-20 players I know they've cheated for sure as they have confessed themselves and have no reason to lie about it. Also ET is kinda old too (since 2003) so if somebody has been playing for 9 years and cheats being very popular most of the time, easy to try them out once. But as I said you can't make a team of 6 without having (ex-)cheaters in it, you can't make a team without one busted player either, I'm afraid. Atleast you couldn't when I still played.

The good thing about QL is it's uncertain what's the QL anticheat policy, is there an anticheat and how efficient it is? But those competitive cheaters are a cancer you have no other cure but a good anticheat which we lack. E.g. jo0f cheated for months until he somehow got busted, because he wasn't from the stupid end of cheaters. And seeing what happened in ET I don't want people to become too aware of cheaters either, because it always ends up with everybody blaming everybody and hardly anybody really knows how to tell if somebody is cheating or not (we need that kinda CSI division, people who know what they're doing!). Bleh. Needs co-operation from id software side :(

What you describe happens mainly in public duels with people you don't know. You never know what kind of people you'll find. Duel is way more fun with buddies.
I don't think the atmosphere in Quake is worst than in other games. One explanation is that losing in this game can be very annoying so stupid people get easily mad.

i've played quake 3 since 2001 and switched to quake live when it went open beta. from my perspective, the community has grown up, got older and more mature. back in the days everyone was 14 and raging like a pubescent pitbull and now most players are like 25-30 years old. sometimes it even feels like gentlemen's polo. :D

I could take educated guesses but I'm not sure about any of them.

The thing that scares me most though... is how easy it is becomming to live a virtual life. By which I mean that you 'maintain friendships' through facebook.

The problem with that is that you only see the nice parts of everyones life. Facebook is filled with pictures of holidays / excursions / parties / etc. which seems to paint a picture that everyone has fun all of the time.... and because of that people feel like everything that is not fun for them is a hassle.
Also because you are interacting with a screen it becomes harder to emotionally relate to the others.


Next major point is how bad the current education is (everywhere). And with bad I don't mean the overall quality / quantity of it.... but it runs much deeper than that.
We are rewarding the wrong things at schools... If you flunk 1 class you get extra help in there. But if you ace several you're left alone.
This creates a kind of "aim for mediocracy".... and also it discourages individuality. Which leads to many discouraged/angry children it seems.

Hell ive rewritten an answer several times to try and condence my answer, finding it really hard to discuss the points without trailing off into other subjects, most specifically the economics of education and overall philosophy. Either way i hope this is readable.

Facebook is right now imho a big charade for people where they try and put up a front that they are somehow "normal" by posting pictures of partys,meetings,cars etc as it is right now a social norm, mainly because of facebook itself.
I dont really see that as a big issue right now though but i can see it becoming a huge problem down the line when the stress of keeping that image alive becomes a largely daunting task.

What i see the problem is not how people relate to emotions or feelings but how they respond to them, we try and keep a mask infront of our friends,family,peers etc and end up regressing a bit in our emotional rappor. What i mean is people are finding less and less need to actually have to react to other peoples emotional states ie. someone posting something on facebook saying "i am sad", you can relate to the feeling but if you are presented with it in real life you dont know what to do.
Kind of like seeing someone in an accident, you get a bit stumped and find it very hard to react accordingly while someone with more experience can act immedietly with the right respons.
I see this problem more and more with younger people, especially people born around the mid/late eighties and forward.



When it comes to todays educaton i see alot of things that bother me. One being what you said, no real reward for people. I dont think i agree with your assessment of the current situation though if i didnt missunderstand. I would take a standpoint that succesful students are being undernurtured and somewhat squandered.
That doesnt mean lesser students shouldnt recieve more help though. Just some points i feel should be addressed.


1. Teachers are treated like shit, being underpaid and underappreciated with pretty much no personal reward for propelling the education standard higher, why fight if you get nothing out of it right?

2. Alot of the teachers are stuck in one teaching method which is litterature and somewhat simple speech/lectures where they provide answers but dont really present any questions. I mean if your not curious of the question then why would you want the answer in the first place?

I also feel that discussion and debate is an undervalued and underused tool, most people shy away from this method because in todays society younger people just cant hold a sensible and objective debate or discussion , with them mostly leading to insult or violence. I believe with alot more consistency humanity as a whole would better itself if this method were to be used more in the long run.

Now, you are probably wondering where i am going with all of this.
Everything you and i have stated here balls upp into pressure. Some people cant take this pressure and have to vent, thus the online raging.
While back in the day people mostly took this out on family or just went to the gym etc. Nowadays we just have ALOT more freedom to say whatever we want considering the amount of anonymity we have to our fellow man.


The way i see it upbringing doesnt really play that huge of a role in the long run considering i know people that have had a "good" upbringing that still act like fucking cunts. I've also met people that have lived through fucking nightmares in their youth that have come out to be humble loving people.

My point on education is more that everyone gets encouraged to go to the same goal.
For instance I've seen this TED-talk from Ken Robbinson which had 2 examples.
A guy who wanted to become a fireman. But his grades were really good and he was a smart guy... so he was discouraged to become a fireman because 'it was below him'. However 15 years later he jumped through a window and saved his old teacher from a burning building.

On the other hand there is was a girl who had horrible grades in everything except gymnastics and art who had tons of help to get her grades up but nothing helped. Untill someone introduced her to a dancing school. Eventually she became one of the most succesful (and rich) dancer and eventually choreographer in the world.

We're not all equal. But schools try to force us to be.

But there are many many problems in this world that should be so easy to fix but aren't.

The forcing of people is just a social norm that people try and conform others and themselves into. In the end the educational system is there to give people more variety in their choices (atleast it was). But it's up to the individual what they want to pursue, its also their choice if they want too listen others or not.

If a less talented person wants to become a biochemist should we not allow him to try if hes willing to put down the hours?

tbh the quake scene was larger back then than it is atm... I think the quake scene had most people playing actively between 99 and 2004.
The gaming scene as a whole is a lot larger though.

In terms of ffa and mods, yes it was larger between 99-2001.
But in terms of osp etc it was smaller then today.

well one of the problems with quake back in those days was that mods etc was very unstructured and generally unavailable to people.

So for someone who bought q3 to install osp was already a bit of a rarity. Other games (released later) solved this better tbh.
But up to 2000/2001 the only fps to really play was q3.
Around that time counterstrike happened and most people who failed in the fast pace of q3 went to cs.

Well i was mostly active between 96 - 2003, so i have 4-5 "scenes" to compare ql too and i see no overall difference in level of activity.

Though i could be wrong as i stayed away from playing ffa,freezetag etc. :P

perhaps you haven't been in the quake scene too much lately... but in my eyes activity has dropped....

I remember times where there were like 6 divisions of clan tournaments on q3 for both tdm and ctf. And even then quite a few clans didn't even enter.

I also remember going to a dutch lan where more than 200 people signed up for the quake duel tournament, and there were also people there "only for tdm/ctf".
Last lan I went to for Q4 had around 20 and last lan I went to for QL had around 8.
Heck I only been to 1 dutch lan since Q4 was released which had 4v4 tdm.

I drop in from time to time but no i havnt really been apart of the scene for the last 10years. Biggest part would be in 2006 when i recruited spartie,rvd,prox etc to excello other then that ive only spectated a couple of tournaments.

What i see is organised quake is dropping off more and more but casual servers(ca,ffa etc) seem to be going on strong.
But yeah, my memory might deceive me a bit as im basing my opinion from something that was 14years ago. >_<

there is a difference between community and a playerbase. the community is pretty much here. the playerbase is very often truly awful, but there are nice people and with little effort you can avoid most of the assholes.

ESR is a rough environment., as for quake itself, you can`t win without being a cheating lagging nigger faggot. It is quite pathetic and a lot of people take quake serious on the wrong lane if you know what i mean. Let me tell you some stories about other communties.

gatsby played an mmo, that`s right an mmo. my argument is already invalid i presume. well i hope u can still read this from your high horses. anyway i started to play and had no idea whats going on. You get helped instantly and without any obligations. some dude spent an hour showing me the entire game plus he gave me 10k hich was at that time like a million bucks. after having maybe 200 hours of experience, the mmo crowd is simply interested in being a community and enjoying the experience together


gatsby started playing quake 1. i dont know if it`s just because the community is small and they have to appreciate new players but i got welcomed very heartily and got set up within 30 minutes by 2 helpers. this community has a place in my little heart for sure.

I had similar experiences with defrag back then and BF2142. I`m not talkign about a bunch of good people i met because you can find those in quake live too, I`m talking about communities actually interested in creating a better experience.

this. /block doesn't work at all for me, very rarely does it ever. even then, it just resets the blocklist upon the next block

Sure it happens, but from my experience it's like in 90% of the games there are no insults (apart from lucker and stuff like that).

Yeah, I played him a couple times but the second time I let him get 1-0 up and at 9:30 I just stomped him to the ground and won. I just wanted to see him rage - which he did for five minutes afterwards.

I made a couple of rules for myself.

1) prefere to play people I know, respect and like

2) if on a public server, if the opponen does not write "gl hf" at the start ill disconnect immediately before the game starts

3) if the guy does not write gg, I certainly wont play a second map

4) if the guy starts flaming as you mentioned it i set im on ignore list. Which is quite long atm.

Not true. There are also many players who do rage but you can tell that they try and control themselves. if you don't mind an occasional "luck" or "right" comment thrown around that's were most of the players seem to stop.

I'm not an angel myself and lose my temper sometimes. But not in the way described in the topic. Anger is OK in sports. I dont mind tennis players smashing their rackets. But there is a certain line, which should not be crossed.

But also in the #tdmpickup I was insulted "to death" and stuff like that, which should result in a ban. But nothing happened.

Answering your question: No, I don't think wishing gl is obligatory (contrary to gg). It's polite and shows one's class though.

But you cannot negate that there are some guys on the site who tend to dismiss anything you say based mostly on anything they think that you represent. For instance if you lived under the communist regime for almost 20 years, in a communist regime tougher and more communism-oriented than the Russians' experienced at the time, and if if you talk something related to communism, a guy comes here eager to put the very definition of communism into balance (like a definition is not a form of putting a logical and understandable sense in a frame about a much bigger issue), then it is very clear that you have a sucker on your tail, and even if you do not have much in common with him, there is the danger that people will associate in some sort your image with his image, and at best some subtle trails will still fly over your head thanks to his dedicated practice. I don't see the reason to not put these species on ignore.

Take many guys here you was arguing against. Most of the people will not count only vaguely remember your encounters, fight for the truth, etc. So thanks to the decision not to put people on ignore, many will just look at you like to a guy who makes absurd statements, enters endless polemics and possesses a trivial character.
