1) Firearms are 18th century technology - they are not going away any time soon: anyone with access to a hardware store can build a gun of some kind. Anyone with connections can get a smuggled gun for probably half price of a legally purchased one. No point in further disarming the law abiding citizens, criminals will always arm themselves, no matter what.

2) Since firearms will not magically cease to exist, someone will always be armed. It's natural for law abiding citizens to be armed (the right to bear arms has always been the distinction between free men and slaves, throughout history). Of course the government disagrees, but then again the government is not interested in your freedom - "Just pay your taxes and shut up, peasant". Germany is a prime example that governments are less trustworthy than the average citizen.

3) Even if you could make firearms disappear people would just switch to the next tool - knives, hatches, hammers and whatnot.

But it's in the American culture to bear arms. In my country, it's not easy to get a gun. But most people don't even want to get a gun. Petty criminals who could kill anyone over 5 bucks don't own guns. And when those guys come at you with knives, you have a lot better chance to (1) run away or (2) fight them off. If we consider all gun deaths world wide then the vast majority of those kills will be done by government employees (soldiers, police officers, etc.), contractors (mercenaries, etc.) or political factions (rebels, terrorists,drug cartels etc.)
