* DIE-FFS olofm was widely received as a cheater (2006-08ish).
* emilio was _ALWAYS_ cheating. the guy got busted every once in a while from his early days in 1.6 to more notably, in cs:go.
* pronax was caught by SSC (anti-cheat system that takes screenshots of your game and scans your for known cheats.
* delpan was regarded as the biggest cheater in swedish 1.6.
* khrystal used to host cups where he and his friends (on lan) would just ravage with aimbots and wallhacks. confirmed by a friend of his that i used to play with.
* rape aka znatch- was also busted by SSC.
* skytten went down to either custodia or EAC.

thats going through the top 50 rankings on gosugamers.net. people would get caught cheating and join the next prize up a week later. kinda speaks to the nature of the cs scene, at least in sweden huh

Knowing a bit about cs scene and playing it a lot 10 years ago, I'm still amazed how people claim quake has a lot of cheaters - honestly for a free online game it hasn't come close to what you see in a regular match of cs. Not to mention there's often some uproar within the lan proven players.

It's actually not allowed. We had to make a ruleset for our CSGO competition so we had to look around at other competitions. There's this nvidia 3rd party software that allows you to make changes to the rendering of the game and that 3rd party software is banned.

I'd think it's far more about being able to actually bet real money on the games. The skins are an incentive too sure, but I do think people value their real money more. Oh and skins have really made cs:go grow, not sure how people who want a community and pro tournaments can dislike them.

Cheating is easy and not detectable if decently done by a pro player. Nobody
is going to notice that extra 5% acc or that occasional quick wh toggle.
On the other hand it gives them easy money (online cups) and way better chances for victories. Both of those are superb motivators.

So we have a system where cheating offers high rewards with negligible risks. We can safely assume that not all quake pros are inherently honest. Thus it doesn't take a genius to figure out that some cheating is going on.

Is it really hard to imagine someone like ZeroQL but with enough brains not to be obvious? What would keep a pro player from cheating in online cups (or on LAN if cleverly done)?

I didn't answer your question because I think it is completely irrelevant in this context. Making money is only part of the motivation - the pleasure of winning is at least as important.

My point is that cheating is not something "that only happens in CS, lol, CS noobs, so lame etc." Cheating is a common occurrence in (almost) any competitive activity. Some people will do anything to win; that's human nature - deal with it.

The current system actively encourages cheating (high rewards, no risks) and the stubbornness and naivety of community is an essential part of that system. Whenever there is a discussion about cheats, it is really difficult to focus on the facts at hands because there is a vast majority of idiots jumping to a priori defences with various reasons (e.g. friends, nationalists, show-offs, fellow cheaters). If the suspect is a pro player things get even more retarded because of 'fanboism' and idolization.

I am inclined to say communities *are* different. Each game has its own culture when it comes to top players, and the reason is that you have key figures who drive the behavior of others via their example. The worse of Quake pro player have never even got close to say COD pro players, in being disrespectful/yelling at each other. Not even 2GD in steroids.

Now about setting up the cheat. Reading the CS thread it seems like the only thing that is needed for you to get your cheat working is to log to your account. I highly doubt quake has anything close to that. I've been to many tournaments, and I've been around when players setup their machines, sometimes being asked for help with either missing equipment or monitor settings, and I can tell there are dozen of eyes pointed at the various machines/screens. Poeple often leave their PC going out for a smoke, and you have others who sit down and try other's people config, etc.

For a cheat to be usable with confidence in such a situation, it would have to install automatically and in a disguised way on any machine, and not being activated by mistake. It should also have no visual representation nor any failure case, as right from the start people spectate matches from behind the shoulder, and as the tournament progresses, the number of eyes just grow exponentially. And it's not noobs eyes, it's other pros.

Also, nowadays the pro circuit it's really more a group of friends / very talented aficionados who appreciate competition and the game, rather than people looking for the big money. It's already quite crazy to make it your career, but to cheat on it, it's even crazier, and to me honest, I really doubt it's the case.

So, call me naive if you want, but I'd rather stick with the 'innocent until proven guilty' here.

If it's a discussion on principles, I'd say there is nothing against taking all precautions (and in our case do everything to run cheat free competitions) while at the same time respect the individuals and consider them innocent until you have proof they are not. One thing does not exclude the other. In fact, they are the basic of a functional justice system.

Now to your prior questions:

That it's not necessarily easy to setup, that the process of installing them might fail, that the cheat could leave traces and show up as somebody else uses the machine, you name it. I guess it's down to how the cheat works. If your assumption is a perfect cheat, than the answer here is probably 'nothing'. Does that perfect cheat exist for quake? I don't know, but I wonder who would invest the energy of making it for a game that is as old and as niche oriented.

2) Which things are done to prevent cheating a) online and b) on LAN?

Online there is little one can do. On LAN it's more the mess of dealing with different PCs, of always having other people around, etc. If I recall correctly (xou can confirm) ESL during the intel extreme masters was somewhat more strict than other lans (you had to hand in a USB with your config, and you had limited access to the PC, and xou would help out sorting certain problems). Not sure though... I feel there is a lot that could be done, but currently I guess it's not that much.

3) Do you think that we have a good detection rate on cheaters?

If we talk about top 5 material, I would be very very surprised (and devastated) if any of them was cheating. If we extend to top 20, again it's very unlikely to me. Generally players have a feeling for fishy things, so if someone is cheating, he is keeping it to a very unnoticeable degree, at which point I would argue that the performance boost of it would also be reduced (it still sucks, but it would not be a ticket for the top place). If we extend to online cups and consider the top 100, then I would say yes, there can be cheaters, but I don't think that's too relevant to this discussion.

Overall, it's really hard to know. Maybe I am just fooled by my wishful thinking. If you know better make names. But until then, I find it a bit irresponsible to cast doubt about the scene just based on reasoning. It's a different game (I think cheating in CS is also much more effective than in Quake duel), it's just a handful of people.

A lot of these things apply to any game or sport. But yes, it is less likely that some puts that much effort to create and implement a cheat into QL.
On the other hand it is probably not that hard to adapt a cheat from another game (with the same graphics API) to QL or to make a silent version of an existing cheat.

I agree for online. For LAN however, I'd recommend a system where the player is literally limited to QL and everything else is setup by admins.

That might depend strongly on who your top 5 are. If you take first 4 finishers from qcon, I'd be extremely surprised as well. If I look at the current QLRanks top 5 I'd still be surprised but considerably less so.
As for online cup top finishers I wouldn't be surprised at all if there were some kinds of cheats involved.
I don't know where to put ZeroQL exactly, but I think one could argue that he might have reached top 20 tdm easily, had he been more careful.

I think my main point here is this:
If we chose to forget or neglect the possibility of someone cheating, we may be supporting such dishonest behavior indirectly. I'd rather cast doubt upon the scene than to whitewash everyone a priori and thus even lower the risk of detection still.

I would call the issue Macro vs Micro.

I stopped long ago to care about single fallacies (micro) in other people thinking. People may write poorly, have difficulty with the language, or even have confusion in their mind and not be able to express what they want in the correct way. Does that mean what they want to say has no value? I don't think so. What I try to care for is their motives, their experiences, their interest in the conversation etc (macro).

Running discussion at macro level allows you to appreciate more other human beings, at at the same time avoid situations in where you are perceived as an asshole.

I find micro level discussion tedious and silly. People get easily lost in irrelevant details and quickly come to the point where what only matter is who is right and who is wrong. Yes, the pleasure of winning is one of the best known motivators. I'd even assume that the top level competitors of most sports are addicted to winning. The risks are low because the chance of detection is approximately 0%. Unless a pro player pulls a "full sombra" the vast majority of the community would come up with any excuse so that they wouldn't have to face the inconvenient truth.

I completely agree with you.

It doesn't matter if prize money is 100 or 100k. There's many different factors that can motivate people to cheat (as you mentioned: winning, bragging rights, self esteem, or even just 100 bucks...).

People have done way worse for way less. In fact, people rob people on the streets in the middle of the day for less than that (small reward with pretty big risk if you ask me...). If you ask any 'sane' person, they'd tell you that's the most retarded thing to do and why would anyone do/risk that. But guess what? There's still many that do it for whatever reason...

It's utteraly naive to think that "no pro" (in any game) cheats. For example with the current CS news (I play quite a bit of CS myself), there's literally no way to tell (even on LAN) if someone is using an aimbot that gives 10-20% aim increase. There's so many ways to load these cheats: via steam workshop, via cloud, via any type of internet access/download, USB Stick, etc... You can even have it loaded on your mouse or headset. These cheat's dont show up in any program list, are literally non-detectable.

And I'm sure there's cheats out there for quake that give a few percent aim increase (obviously not 10-20%) for rail and LG, that you couldn't even tell if you were sitting behind their screen. These "LAN Cheats" have such small FOV, such small increase in hits, but it's enough to give that 'edge', that extra 'confidence', etc...

Thinking that cheating is only going on in 'CS' (now with the current news) is as naive to think that doping is only going on in the cycling sport. There's dopers in every fucking sport. For all we know, a Lebron James, Messi, Hamilton, etc... could all be doped. Either because the controlling isnt as good and easy to bypass or because they are still "undetected", etc....

If the only reward is to be considered top player in ql, then you put exactly that at risk if you cheat. You risk being a known cheater and it will follow you whatever game you plan on playing competitively. Therefore low reward, high risk.

if there is serious money at stake the risk is the same but the reward is ultimately higher.

So this is my point. cheating is more likely when there is money at stake. argue with it. And not with your imaginary friend.

I never remotely claimed that noone cheats. Thats why i won't argue these points. Hence the imaginery friend who seems to claim that noone cheats. I was a little more harsh not aggressive, but only since you implied that my post would have made you lose faith in humanity and such bs.

Well, Evil has earned more than most Russians make in a year just from his online cups. Maybe it doesn't seem like a lot to you, but it really matters where you're from. And as already mentioned everyone in cycling at a pro level dopes. I actually know someone who was semi pro and put up some national qualifying times etc. He didn't go pro because he didn't want to do the drugs required.

Most olympians are doping. You can believe otherwise if you want. Most of them don't receive jack or shit for their efforts beyond ego massage.

It doesn't really matter to the types of personalities likely to do it in the first place. It's a big reason why a lot of dishonest assholes seem to run things too in my estimation... because honest people just don't understand how dishonest people think and always want to assume the best if they somehow can identify with them. By the way, the intelligent dishonest people are well aware of this human condition and take advantage of it constantly.

I'll be honest though, in my estimation cheats for games like this are worse than steroids for other sports. At least in other sports the person is still executing the necessary skills (ie: Lebron James in basketball - obvious doper, but clearly amazing skills anyway).

These cheats take away much of the very skills that are the essence of the game. Doping helps but you still have to do things yourself and execute yourself. You don't have things executing for you.

There are a number of ways to cheat on LAN. People have installed hacks on usb drives, even hiding them easily by naming them teamspeak.exe or something of that nature. Hell, people have replaced their mouse cpu's with custom ones that have hacks on them. I do remember a story (in cs 1.6) about a lan where a cheater could pressed a key and a pixel would change a slightly different color to reveal where the enemy was at through walls. Since it was just a pixel, it was extremely hard to see even when sitting behind the player.

A lot of the claims against the CS pro's suggest that the players store the files on Steamcloud or through Workshop (since they log on with their own accounts).

but nowhere near enough to call csgo a success. they rely on the community and overwatch as anticheat, and honestly, their server infrastructure is rocky at best and the game is just sluggish and buggy more often than not. seems like they put the most effort into skins and selling map packs.

Yes, but your argument misses the point, because it assumes that the cheater always has way less skill to begin with. Even with every cheat in the world I couldn't beat Cypher, but give a 60% aimbot to a semi-pro player like demon or ins and suddenly they'll easily beat everyone else.

Yeah at first glance it's suspecious as hell but after reviewing the demo myself I noticed that he heard the enemy scoping and reacted to that. And there was no aimlock either :/.
I just checked the lower tunnels scene too and even their the ch doesn't align or lock on the enemy. Still not saying he's clean but most of the stuff is explainable and knowing that he has a rather slow sense you can see when he lifts and readjusts the mouse.

No idea about the inferno scene tho. Don't know enoigh about csgo spray/demo mechanics to comment on that. But this one in particular is really weird :/

Can't say much about nuke defuse, when I started playing leagues, defusing through walls was against the rules (think it was ESL or CAL). Rules mentioned nuke defuse specifically.
As a result some leagues tried to force a rule where boosting was illegal as well.

I think it's a game exploit and even though it's creative and fun, it belongs to pub servers.

Esl forbid pipe surfing on nuke because it allowed someone to silently rush lower and that was a huge advantage. Esl sucked big time when it came to "rules" ;).
Imo stuff like this is game enhancing and makes it both more enjoyable to play and watch.
Heck, people tried to fix russian walking because it broke the game...

There was an interview with a former cheat maker posted on reddit before and he talked about how they used cheats and got away with them and also how many proplayers there is that cheats. He claimed that there are about 30-40 cheaters in the pro scene, and about 5 of them in Germany.

EDIT: Also the cheat gets autoinstalled when he logs in to hes account, So even if he just starts up the game he will get the cheat installed without anyone noticing. They can sit right next to him and not see anything because there is no sign of him installing the cheat.

OFC that position could be abused against the rules as it could not be hit from some specific spots, that weren't used tho, plus you could see through some walls (it was not that case in game tho).
So yeah, it was against the spirit of the game for sre, and it wasn't the game as it was meant to be... And it was probably over the line rules-wise as well, but frankly it could have worked and it was a nice try in a desperate situation by fanacheat.

that overpass trick was cool and the other team figured out the counter (although too late). it's the maps fault, fix it or remove it from the pool next time if people get so butthurt, but bitching at pro-players for abusing it is stupid.

pixelwalking ban is the dumbest rule in FPS history. if it's not out of bounds, who cares? besides you can pixelwalk on lots of ledges that are otherwise accessible by default.

Pixelwalking wasn't actually in the Dreamhack Winter 2014 rulebook. That boost would've been allowed if it wasn't for the fact that it gave immortality to the boostee from various angles, that is what made Dreamhack admins request that Fnatic replay the match or forfeit.

I have to agree about CS being full of drama. Last week people were bitching about Fifflaren under performing and then celebrating that he had been replaced with Maikelele, this week they're trying to get rid of Flusha and are not going to stop with the amount of shitposting they do on HLTV, the worst part is that they are actually drawing out responses from Flusha and Fnatic which will only fuel them further. Depressing.

Yeah I dont see a problem with the way DH handled the boost on overpass. It broke the map and ruined the chances of the T side. No big deal LDLC went to the finals, infact I expected no less.

And HLTV is full of morons, that much is true. But, Flusha and OlofM are both cheating or cheated in the past. It just takes some time before VAC catches up, or for Valve to get inside information and manually ban them. But yeah, a large number of video's some HLTV nabs are pushing as evidence, are not actually proof of anything. For me its all about the dust/inferno/mirage clips, they are about as dodgy as it gets, and would get a skilled unknown banned straight away.

And like in some thread I read, imagine if he does that low sens turn 10 times in a game (although probably more) and he plays perhaps 200 games or more in a year, that's over 2000 moves like that and out of that people have found 15 moves that end up hovering the xhair over a enemy model for 0.5 seconds or less.

If I was this super ultra mega coder making a cheat that could fit into flushas mouse (14kb or less), that could by pass every know anti-cheat, some of swedens top it-dudes hanging around helping out at DH and the last min security measures DH took that the players and the coder didn't know about before, plus having some minimum 200k spectators during the event with everyone who can be bothered only reviewing this flusha guy, I wouldn't make the aimkey fucking lock directly on the enemy models lmao. Especially not the head. I'd make the aimkey purposely miss the models while staying close enough to let me know where the enemy is, because the user is only intending to use it to gather enemy locations, not while actually shooting them with the aimkey. Also has it been decided which enemy model it locks onto yet? Closest? Top fragger? Biggest gun? Lowest hp?

The cheat is intended to quickly snap to the enemy's head in order to work as a wallhack. Obviously it's not supposed to linger there. There would be no advantage in that and it would be much more obvious. Your argument is, again, null.

He does, as the gifs show, sometimes use the cheat in order to actually shoot through walls or smoke in situations where it can be considered logical to spam there. By also using it this way his cheat has two purposes: Wallhack for information AND guided spam shots. If he's confident he won't get caught, which he quite obviously was, using the hack to full advantage makes sense.

On a more serious note, what is really bad (of dreamhack and I guess the CS community) is that they allow players who have been banned in the past to play at dreamhack, like krystal and pimp (he did play right?). That's the biggest problem with CS, people can cheat and comeback. There have been no hate towards those players in this tournament, because they are not cheating right now (or did they? DUN DUN DUN). It's good that people try to find current cheaters but they can't just forget about the ones already caught.

There's nothing wrong with taking his side for the sake of argument. I just wanted to point out that most of the arguments you put forward were nonsensical and simply distracting from the real discussion.

Yeah idk, I wrote that kinda fast :p But basically lots of the stuff that get posted is just confusing and its too bad its mostly just gifs that doesnt show the whole situation with sound. Like a gif of pronax that looked fishy but if you take a second look (even if it was a gif) you could tell the enemy made a sound, but someone with 0 experience just looking at it will instantly call it cheat. Didn't mean to sound personal, tired plus long day finished of by melting my brain reading some hltv and reddit messed with my head :) Not really in the mood for this topic though, hltv gave my brain aids so not gonna touch cs for a while lol. I think they are both a) stupid enough to do that and b) cowardly enough to try. At this point they are not risking anything, their careers are over because of how obvious it is that they cheat. They don't have the balls to come clean and so the only logical (in their mind) thing to do is just carry it on as long as they can. If they stop cheating it will be obvious how worse they are so they are playing it out. They fucked up and now are in a position with sponsors, a team, teammates fans and serious-money tournaments. They're in way over their heads.
