Lol just provide the ip address. You're going to be using an open port number so there's not much to be worried about.

Are you and your friend connecting to the server through lan? Have you had anyone connect to it from the internet yet?

Well you got me interested. I never bought quake 4 and only played it on Xbox 360 at a friend's house. The multiplayer looks like a blast.

The gameplay is great, but everything else concerning mods, servers, fps caps, sound bugs and the like are shitty.

As discussed in another thread I would love server options for crouchslides, shooting through teles and ramp jumps in Quake Live

Ya, I really enjoy administering the server, and the mods/maps/webstats... That sort of thing... I am weird I guess lol..

But ya... I didn't really have a problem with the QuakeLive Gameplay.

No Players Online

When the match is over, and the map changes, it will show the server as either offline, or void of players. This map change usually takes about 5-10 seconds. I just have bots running in the game at the moment, but my friend and I play on there pretty regularly.

Does anyone happen to know anything about the Steam version of Quake 3: team Arena? Combatibility wise (In terms of setting up a dedicated Server).

Can you setup a dedicated server with the steam version?
Can non-steam players connect to steam players?
Anything I should know before buying Quake 3 from steam, if I am planning on using it for a dedicated server?
Any advice?

Steam quake 3 and team arena are all just like buying the original installation disks. It's a standalone game so steam or no steam makes no difference. You don't even need steam logged in to run it.

You run the dedicated server file located in the game directoryand set it up via server commands. Just like all the early games. You can run a dedicated server off any Windows afaik. Linux is pretty great for running quake servers.

Just do some googling if you have specific questions.

Personally I just bought the three pack (q1 q2 and q3 with team arena). Pretty good deal.

Do I have to buy Quake I, and II twice from steam, if I want to run a server in the basement, and play on the client upstairs?

Absolutely not. You only need to buy them once, and technically you don't need to buy those games at all for what you're doing. When you buy q3 all you're really purchasing is a CD key which is only really important for joining and running servers using punkbuster (anticheat). You can literally copy q3 game dir to another computer and have both computers join a server as long as punkbuster is disabled. Just like q3, qw and q2 are basically free (not legally) because there's nothing stopping a person from copying game directories over to another machine.

You can download q2 demo, install patch 3.20 and you'll have everything the full version has but single player maps. And conveniently, missing maps can be downloaded from a server when joining.

Things were much easier in late 90s pc gaming.

So as long as I have punkbuster disabled, and I connect using the same cd-key, it won't say something along the lines of "CD-Key Already in Use"?

Well it's kinda finicky with CD keys. If it has a problem with the CD key just erase it or use 777777777 or somethin. It's weird but it works. As long as punkbuster is disabled it shouldn't be a hastle.

Bare in mind the new QL update due in September - October will give us community servers. You'll be able to run your own dedis just like Quake 3, as confirmed here.

That is very cool sounding, although, wouldn't it be a "QuakeLive" dedicated server? I was hoping to have a Quake 2,3, and 4 server up. QuakeLive is very impressive, but a big part of it for me is the nostalgia. + I love q1,2,3,and4

Quake Live is basically the same, and has several features that vanilla Q3 doesn't. Nostalgia is really the only reason you'd want to run a server for Q3 after this upcoming update, and even then it's a pretty silly reason. Still I can't tell you what to do.

Also you can run Q3 ruleset servers if you really want op lg and rail, by tweaking the server configs. You will also be able to use any old Q3 maps in the upcoming version!

I won't disagree with you. We have a very "programmed" culture.

The servers won't shutdown with this update from the look of things. Over the next few months we might start to get announcements that they'll be closing down, but Sync is even quoted there saying that the current subscription model is still profitable for them.

And yes, if you run a server in your backyard you will get LAN pings. Good luck finding anyone who wants to play against you on it.

Ah, right. The match creator in the client isn't implemented yet, so I don't know if anyone knows. I think it's pretty likely to be in, though.

I am not using Q43A.... I am using Q4Max.. I really like the MaxStats that come with it :-) I wish that you could use Multiple mods at the same time! You could have something like Q43A with Q4Max with Q4Supremacy, all together :) That would be awesome!

EXISTING MODS... This implies that you can use Q43A with other mods.... Am I missing something?

It just fixes what hasn't been originally fixed in other mods but it's got its own package, I guess.

Q43A works with no other mods, i recoded 60% + of the SDK and fixed all the netcode and snapshots, all the physics, removed hitscans, etc etc etc

players are always in sync, no hitscan will ever pass through walls, the server only sends code that needs to be synced in snapshots

you can have upto 128 players if the engine using the same cvar + vehicles and turrets

Q43A has all new netcode and everything else, it fixes all the bugs and glitches in all other mods, its all recoded

you can have water, and lava in maps in mp or single player, you can have vacuums

I see "player rankings" under q3 as well, but that didn't seem to be working. Maybe you already know but haven't yet set it up, but CPMA can generate a MAXStats compatible XML log of the matches too (I would recommend two separate MAXStats folders).

I see the stats folder in cpma i.e. Quake3/cpma/stats

How do I tell cpma to start generating the XML logs?
Is it a Cvar that I have to turn on or something?

Well I figured it out... Really really really annoying that cpma makes a duplicate directory structure for everything in C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Quake3\CPMA

to top it off, by default windows XP hides the AppData folder, so made it even more confusing... jeesus!! lol..

On top of that.. there is a cvar variable that holds the "Stats" folder... But of course it won't accept a relative path OR a Fixed Path... it only accepts a folder off of the Big\long\assed\documents and settings\path\quake3\cpma\EnterYourFolderHere

Luckily... Q4Max allowed for the relative path, and had no problems with spaces in the folder names.... So got it all working now.. Thanks for your advice Anthony :-)
