Adding the numbers is obviously trivial, but noticing the pickup time mid-fight or reaching all items in time with good position is what I think people often call "timing". That's harder.

Make a damn chart of 5 second intervals, reference it for a week while you're playing, and then get rid of it. This shit isn't hard, and it isn't even that big a deal to be able to do it in the first place. Take it from someone that can time 3 items to the second and still loses anyway. You're making it too important.

I know two good players who time with +20/30 and then just add 5. Might not be the best method but it does work and one of them can time up to three items on the second. Depends a bit on the opponent tho.

i know a lot of people who do this aswell, myself included. sometimes you can hear people doing it out loud on teamspeak ;)

I take the opportunity to share something I recently did. I was going to make a video about this, but I can write here first, and possibly make a better article with video later.

Learning Cards

I was chatting with rapha about timing and he told me how he sees the problem. He said "All you need to do is to learn two new languages: the armor language and the mega language. The same way 'nineteen' becomes 'neunzehn' in German, 'nineteen' should become 'forthyfour' in the armor language, and 'fiftyfour' in the mega language. Just learn these languages". Easy to say but hard in practice, right? Actually no, and this is what I've done.

I cut 8 cartboard sheet into 8 pieces each (60 + 4 spare), and used a red pen to write 00-59 times on one side, and a blue pen to write the corresponding +25 on the other side. Btw. avoid plain paper; you should use sheets that are thick enough so you don't see through.


This is how I used the cards:

1. I placed them next to my bed, and forced myself to train them each evening (for about ~10 minutes). You have to convince yourself this is useful and do it every evening. To me, the fact rapha told me to do it, was enough.

2. I started by dividing them in 4 random groups of 15 cards, and train each group individually.

3. Given a group I would just shuffle the cards, look at the red number, and try to spit out the blue answer as fast as possible. I would quickly realize which ones I knew by heart, and which ones I had to "compute". I would focus on the latter, until the direct answer would come up immediately, no computation involved. After I learned perfectly a group, I moved to the next. After I learned all groups, I would shuffle all cards together and create 4 new groups.

This method worked brilliantly for me. It took me two weeks to learn the "armor language". Two weeks is nothing if you consider how long you have played quake. And the effort (10 minutes before going to sleep) is very little.

To conclude, and this is the reason I haven't done the article yet, I'm now in the process of learning the "mega language", using cards the reverse way. The "problem" I face at the moment is that given a number, my brain finds it easier to just add 10 to the armor time than to learn a new association. I'm confident though that with practice I will get there.

So to conclude, this worked for me, and I have to say it makes a huge difference. You still have all the other difficulties involved with timing, but given the little cost, I dare suggesting this to anyone out there playing duel.

I've seen Strenx do it on stream, but even if I hadnt its pretty obvious they do. You can't get to their level without timing red and mega. Its one of the basics, like aiming properly. What makes them great is far beyond just knowing the basics.

Cypher obviously was timing like hell in dreamhack. If he doesnt sometimes its because he's so good he doesnt need to time against lesser players.

You know that by just switching mega<->armors practice, you can reverse the clock order, right?

Since it is a clock, -25 is the same as +35 and -35 as +25. So you can have the clock counting up and use +25 for armors and +35 for mega, or have clock counting downward and use +35 for armors and +25 for mega.

Hahaha cool trick bro, never thought of it that way. I've been playing duel countdown for almost 2 years now, can't be bothered to change it to count up :P. I guess I'll just have to avoid going into overtimes.

so just have two clocks: one counting up, one down, and then you can use the same increment for both...that shouldn't be too confusing

It's getting to +-1 second with a certainty rate of 89% =) I'll probably misstime two items once every 5 games.

I used to try and do adding or math tricks. Sure the math is simple, but nothing beats just memorizing every single +25 timing. There are only 60 of them. I made these tools to help.

why the fuck would you bother learning to time for duel when the most effective and efficient style of playing duel is avoiding all major items and just playing a defensive, non committing style of play. collecting items in ql duel is much more of a risk than a reward, its much better to just stay safe and collect what your opponent gives you easily

the most efficient way I learnt timing is by reading the chart you posted and saying out loud to myself from 0-59 the ra and mh times e.g. 0-25,35 1-26,36 etc. Don't do this too much everyday because your brain will hurt and you won't learn anything. It took about 2 weeks for me to remember this doing 20mins a day. Then I used this site - http://visualhud.pk69.com/timer.html and got 1 second for each item for 1min. This also took about 2 weeks. I know items don't spawn every second but this site is also good for improving your timing concentration so if you want to go hardcore you could do this for up to 10mins since that's how long duels last. After this numbers such as 39 you know off by heart and you start to get to the difficult stage of timing... remembering the time. In duels there is so many things out to distract you such as taking fights before mh and forgetting the time completely. This is why i recommend speccing matches of a pro first and say the mh time to yourself every time. If you do this up to 10mins then you can start dueling. Also if your timing doesn't feel right some days then just spec a match like the method above. Once you finally start to duel try to play against harder players. Harder players put more pressure on you and you forget more easily. If you think you mastered that then you can go on and time 2 items,3 items... then up to 5 items like rapha :D. Overall learning to time a single item to the second and getting it right every time took me about 6 weeks and it was very frustrating and annoying at times but better than play 1000+ duels and timing by feeling which can cost you a lot of the times.

Also I'm curious as to how people time 2 or more items in their head? Do you constantly repeat to yourself the mega,ra time or the ra,mega time? Or is there another method I don't know about? A player told me he times to the second but also knows by feeling and when mh is about to come up he knows it to the exact second and therefore doesn't have to constantly repeat to himself in his head but that seems impossible to do with 3 to 4 items.

I just add five to whatever the current time is to get the last digit of the spawn time, and the first digit is easy with experience.

So pick up mega at 17,

17 + 5 = 22

so i know last digit is a 2.

just memorize the pairs 1/6, 2/7, 3/8, 4/9 and then memorize all the timings for 0/5

if you pick up mega at 17

you've memorized that 15 = 50

and you know 7's pair is 2

so 52

and again for next mega (picked up at 52)

you've memorized that 50 = 25

and you know 2's pair is 7

so 27

with enough repetition you'll be able to blend the two steps together very quickly and then eventually you'll memorize the timing itself without having to do any steps and know instantly 17=52

haha, I forgot about this thread. anyway, I made a much simpler chart if anyone cares, as some people found it too jumbled/messy, and printing it out made me agree. when I used this chart before, I had JUST finished making it, so I probably was too excited about it to even notice how messy it all was. the explanations I gave in it though are still valid i think.

the exact same thing applies to this one too, just watch demos/games and as you watch time the items, checking each time to see if you're right or wrong. also, I have a tendency to feel "rushed" when trying to find the pickup time on the lefthand side while watching a demo, so I can get back to watching the game. if you get that too, remember you're not watching the game, you're just memorizing timing, so it doesn't matter if you miss what happened on-screen. anyway, interesting discussion up in here

Hm, i don't have problem doing the math, I can do it even in background while aiming. The thing is when I have a result i forget it in 10 seconds most :D Didn't figure it out yet.

i think the most important thing is to get to the item bases on timing, positioning(in order to get the item some seconds before the item spawn), and fighting. when i used to practiced a lot i had to build my strategy based on it too.
