I'm fine with it the way it is now. I actually have a reason to use rockets in fights now. The one thing I don't like about it is that when I'm forced to play on Frankfurt servers my rockets can't hit the broad side of a barn due to how much they depend on good ping and a stable connection, but the LG just plain doesn't do enough damage to win close range fights.

That's funny I couldn't hit shit with any weapon on Frankfurt servers with 20ms, even though the lagometer looked stable, then I jump on a Swedish server with 35-45ms, and I start aiming well again with both rockets and LG.

I find the Sydney server is the same - 50 ping there feels much worse than 70 on Adelaide. There's definitely some other factors at play.

Sydney is notoriously bad for lots of people. Lately even people in Sydey struggle with it. Lots of through-rails, rocket delay and other weirdness even with a stable netgraph.

It's really sad, because there has been a noticeable drop in players after the Sydney quality degraded even more around the time of the DDoS :/

Adelaide has still been the best Aussie server for a long time, though.

No, that's madness. A ping under 40-45 is always preferable. As showed by pro players, always whining if the ping is over than amount. Theorically, you could have some advantage with hitscan weapons over that limit, but at the downside of having more lag in general, wich makes the projectile weapons expecially weaker, and in general gives a bad game feeling.

What the users above were mentioning is the strange inconsistency between servers. You can ping higher on a particular server and feel the game better than on a server on wich you ping less. While this shouldn't be the case, in general.

We're talking about a 14% dps nerf, not an 86% dps nerf of lg. This is a comparison of hitting 34% accuracy in a fight with lg @ 7dmg/cell vs needing 40% @ 6dmg/cell to do equivalent damage. Like I said, for top players weapon usage is almost certainly correlated with positioning.

Either way, I prefer stronger lg. However, I can still see why the nerf hasn't affected usage among top players.

Not only, usage depends a lot on the strenght of the weapon. That's why if you hit high enough, you can just skip the rockets and use lg in their place in close combat, Toxic or Evil style.

While if you're very good with rockets, you can can still outdamage an lging opponent in mid range, Cooller style.

So a weapon nerfing or overpowering can really change the dynamics.

This nerfing didn't change anything, you still see good aimers blindly bullrushing with lg, and defensive players seeing their stacks helplessly devoured.

Probably because the real overpowered aspect of the lg is the knockback strenght, more than the damage output, and this is the same as before.

well, they kept the 6dmg-nerf so the morons with poor aim are happy, but restored the insane knockback.
so now you got like 14.3% more time to realise that you are jammed in a corner.

Pretty much agree with this. Although I preferred how Q4's lg worked... Higher fire rate so you would use up ammo quicker and be able to deal more damage, but it meant that it was possible to kill quickly if you were really accurate and punished with having no ammo if you spam with it.

i can't really judge about q4, the 60fps cap pissed me so off, that i focused on university and missed 80% of the game.

i am also not quite sure how the ql engine with a 25ms tick rate (sv_fps 40) would synchronise with reloadtimes lower than 50ms.
but damping a 7dmg-lg by making it run out of ammo faster is a reasonable idea, i just think that reducing the ammo players can carry would be a simpler way to accomplish it.

You raise a very overlooked point: it's not really the damage output to be wrong, but the push back force.
Really overpowered, especially at high levels: it takes something like 3 cells to stop someone from taking an item and making him fall down. Ridicolous.
If the railgun had the same knockback effect per damage delivered, it would propel enemies from one side of a room to the other one.

Not to mention the door jamb jammings, you see even pro players consistently missing entrances because 2 cells hit them.

sp0nge and syncerror know what they are doing. The weapons have been play tested to death already in the focus group and also by the regular players themselves over the years.
If you look at the top players (evil cypher cooller fazz clawz agent ash pavel baksteen and so on), when they play duel, you can clearly see that the weapon balance is fine as it is and that reducing the lg knockback would be making the game a rl only fest.
And based on my own experience, I can ofc feel the difference between 7 and 6 dmg per cell for the lg. RL becomes a bit stronger, and it's ok, you have to adapt and use less lg at close range.
again, reducing the knockback of the lg would make the rl too strong.

the rl already got its projectile speed increased, and like i said, its knockback is pretty strong too. How many time can you get bounced in the air because the opponent landed a pretty good rocket at your feet ? And unlike with the lg, when you get knocked out in the air by the rl, you just CAN'T dodge, you're almost forced to pray that the next rocket won't be a 100% direct :)

I think that most of what they are doing with quakelive is fine.

But yeah you can disagree with me ofc, and I know that a lot of people are disappointed by their leading of quakelive (loadouts, no matchmaking, no real promotion of ql and so on) but still, what they've done with the weapons balance and overall gameplay of quakelive is just fine. The movements and weaps def are different than vq3 in a good way. I think that you can't disagree with me about that. Like i said, what they've done since 2008 about the core gameplay of quakelive is fine. It definitely is more balanced and feels better overall than the "old" q3, you can't deny that.

I have to disagree on the concept that watching the pros playing, the balancing is fine.

I think the balancing is pretty much ok, on casuals-semi pro level. There, you can excel with every weapon, and hitscan aims aren't usually that punishing and perfectioned as they are on higher levels.

There already are aim-whores (no disrespect, i considered myself one of those) at those levels; and probably the hitscan weapons could be nerfed a little bit (or projectile ones powered up a little, or health system improved somewhat) to compensate that.

But in general, it is fine as it is. Some may disagree, but let's just say it's not broken.

Now on the pro scene. I think there, it's clear that the scene is significantly hitscan-centered. There, lg and rg are really game changers. Rockets are still used a lot, but are mainly effective only as spamming areas or in really close combat.

There are still players focusing heavily on rockets, but when they do, they seems to do it mainly out of habit, personal preference, stubborness, or similar reasons. Cypher, Cooller and Rapha are all guilty of that "old school" mentality. Kinda like when Cooller, at the beginning of his career, was trying to win Toxic on dm6 using almost only rockets and ending a match with something like 3 rails shot.

In many situations, those players loses consistent stacks or mid-close fights against lgers. And they give the impression they could have won those fights, having they stuck to lg instead of putting al their eggs in a basket and relying solely on the big bang of a well placed rocket. 20 damage near a corner, another 25 for another peack, a brief streak while the opponent exposes himself, and they would already have dealt more damage than with those 2 missed or dodged rockets.

I don't think it's only an impression that the great part of the damage output of every top player is based on hitscans.

the fact is, Quake 3 wasn't designed around duel. IT was designed around FFA, when everyone were still using ball mices.

If you watch the old matches around 2000-2004, you'll see atrocious aims. Rockets were a force back then, because not even pro players were able to hit more than 30% rails, picking the shots, or 25 % lg, in good conditions.

But the hitscan game have progressed immensely. Pro players today consistently hit peak or flick rails that would have gone straight in a fragmovie, back then. Lgs accuracy are absurd compared to back then.
There isn't even comparison, really. The game badly needed an hitscan nerf, that have been implemented, indeed.

But probably, and that's my opinion, we should do another step, at least for pro competitors. A kind of a pro mode, specific for them. Were hitscans are just slightly more nerfed, so to make the game, again, rocket-based, and favour a faster, more aggressive gameplay.

Fact is, nowadays, who hits more lg and rail, usually wins.

I didn't like it. They had it totally backwards, lg was too weak in situations where it should be strong and then too strong when it should be weak. I remember when they changed it to 7-7-7 and it felt so overpowered. I don't mind 6-6-6 as it is now but I wouldn't be against it being 5-6-7!

Ive had to change up how I play duel quite a bit with the nerf. I was mainly lg heavy all the time aggressive now I play almost exclusively +back rail&rl like smackgyver said. could also be that as I got better that's the meta at the higher levels? ppl that are really good seem to use much more rail/rl anyways along with positioning rather than lg whoring (unless they see u in the open with no guns)

lg traps also suck now that ppl have more time to react. seemed to have made rockets way more op than anything. b4 u could use lg close/mid and that was fine and missing rockets was heavily punishable. now doesn't seem to be the case unless ur hitting like 50 lg.

Especially in ca, with 7 dmg and enough cells i would never switch to rockets no matter how close the range. Its just probability. And more often than not the lg would come out on top. Now finally there is a reason to switch to the appropriate rl in close range. Which puts a much bigger emphasis on rocket skill. I approve of the nerf 100%.

Having to change weapons is not a bug but a feature.

Lg nerf never "ruined" the game, you now have to use your mind to position yourself a bit better with the LG to do maximum damage with your ammo given. This will apply to duel, however having more ammo in LG just makes up for it and try not to get into super close fights because RL seems to be easier to hit lol100damage face rockets.

Because CA plays differently than all other mods and, lets face it, CA players tend to be quite partial (only speak highly of the gameplay they like which is +forward lg), simple minded (they don't think about the other mods) and dumb too (see #88).

4v4 CA is just like 4v4 TDM except that in CA you spawn with a full stack and all weapons, and so does your opponents. The weapons and positioning just work the same. The only real difference is the movements, in CA you don't get selfdamage so yeah you do more rocket jumps than in tdm. But like i said, positioning still matters. Combat skills are the same. Look at k1llsen or strenx or even l1nkin zyrinx etc, they are very good at duel/ctf/tdm and also very good at CA. How do you explain that ? I'll help you : because there are quite a lot of similarities between CA, TDM, CTF and duel, and, like i said, 2 of them are the weapons and positioning. Combat skills.

For you CA is not quake, just because it doesn't have the items. But over the years CA became the most played gametype and people found out that it's just fun and one of the reason of that is that the core gameplay of quake is still there.

rocket arena (old version of CA) is there since quake 2, so it IS part of quake. It's like saying CPM isn't quake. CPM IS quake, just like CA. Quake isn't only about elitist gameplays like duel or tdm. In my opinion what makes quake so great are the movements, the maps, and the weapons. All of these aspects you can find them by playing CA.
Not everyone like to time items, wait 2-5mn and escape while being out of control, pickup armor all around the maps as if it was some MMORPG and you would need to increase your stuff before fighting. People like the fact that CA is a very simple and easy gametype to understand and pickup, and that it's fair for everyone (same stack, same weapons), and that the action starts right after your 1st spawn, unlike in duel, for example, where you have to run or play extremely defensive or pickup unfair advantages before fighting (like outstacking your opponent, or endless +back rail/rl). In fact, in duel, situations where you have exactly the same stack as your opponent, the same weapons, and almost equal positioning, happen only very rarely, so you can't really know who has the best lg, the best rockets, the best rail... In duel it's all about taking unfair advantages (more health, much better positioning, rushing an opponent freshly respawning with only mg in hand) in order to get as much frags as possible. Yes, ofc, it still requier good combat skills and being smarter than your opponent, i can't deny that, but look at agent, his combat skills are just terrible except maybe for his +back rail, and yet he still manages to be ahead of most duel players in europe. He just wouldn't stand a chance in 1v1/2v2 CA.

Quake isn't only about your elistist and close minded mentality, quake is a very complete game with a lot of different gametypes that can satisfy every kind of players. You don't like duel ? play CA. You don't like CA ? play tdm. You don't like TDM ? play CTF. As simple as that. Quake is for EVERYONE, and despite what some people like you are thinking, it's not necessarily an elitist game for close-minded people like you.

I've been playing CA for more than 10 years (played ofc quake 3 rocket arena), and still have fun playing it. I don't care if it's not as complex as duel or tdm. I don't care if people like to call CA players retarded, I just play what is most fun to me.
ATM i've not found a better feeling in any games than playing 1v1/2v2 CA with music :). It's fun and there's always room for improvement. I like the fact that it's easy to compare who has the best lg/best rockets/best rail. I like the simplicity of the gametype. much much fun :D

Not my fault you fail to express yourself in a clear manner, bruh.. Anyways the concept of "aim" isn't hit scan only (and on top of that RG hasn't been changed), so basically the balance of when to use spam over hitscan has just shifted.

The 1 dmg reduction from LG definitely did not change that for QL. You could always just spam rockets like a retard and get away with massive damage in this game.

That was horrible, sorry. Always late, always chasing while eating a ton of unnecessary damage (both from the target and his teammates), and just basically bad positioning eating damage in your sides/back. Thinking you deserve to win, just because you are able to hit easy targets (and almost only easy targets) is kinda funny.

I like the lg at 6 - in all high skill CA matches before the change I'd say 90% of players had LG as their most used weapon. It just was too easy to get away with - not punishing to miss unlike RL or RG and the dps was almost on par anyway. Even if it means players like myself with poor rocket aim is punished a bit more it feels better balanced.

I wouldn't mind seeing a 6-7-6 as an experiment though.

Please, it was changed to appease people who whined about rail/lg whores. Weapon changing has basically remained the same, except you can now back spam rockets repeatedly and it takes longer to die.

It's really not very hard. when I played ca alongside duel I could usually hit 40+ vs even skilled players or better players. I'd say it was possible vs 85% of the duel player base, other 15 being really top notch players (2000+ elo, at that point u can't just fight whenever u want, u have to start planning them).

it's possible for me to hit 40 lg as well, the issue is actually dedicating enough time to the game to get comfortable doing it consistently and knowing what part of your game to sacrifice to hit that. it is not possible for the majority of the playerbase to hit 40 lg on a player who is actually taking the effort to dodge. dodging as a skill is equally important in duel.

As more of a rl player I feel its more balanced now. In CA the very heavy use/abuse of lg is gone, while it still is an effective weapon.

quakelive has always been heavy rocket spam fest in those modes because the shit noobs couldn't even hit more than 35% lg when it was still 7 damage.

Like I said in previous posts the damage nerf is not really an issue, just make sure you pickup more ammo in duel, dodge better and hit harder. It's then =/=

The problem has never been the LG. The problem is that other weapons don't do enough damage. The RL in particular is way too weak in the splash and it creates situations where even if you are in a situation where the RL is "supposed" to be the dominant weapon, you can end up hitting like 5 rockets on a fresh spawn without him dying. You could argue that a weak splash rocket is really a miss and that you should be happy that you did 17 damage instead of none at all, but it makes the RL way too random.

The RL in particular is way too weak
