Today the CPL has announced that it will continue holding Quake 3 tournaments through into their 2007 world season following the record sell out of the CPL 2006 Championship Finals to be held this December.
The CPL have added that for the 2007 World Season new maps will be used for the Q3 tournaments.
The Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) is pleased to announce that the Quake 3 Tournament for the CPL 2006 Championship Finals is now completely filled, including all 10 waiting list spots.
This tournament marks the first time that a CPL tournament has been completely sold out four months before the competition. This tournament marks the return to Quake 3 of some of the most exciting names in gaming such as Johnathan “Fatal1ty” Wendel, Paul “czm” Nelson, Anton “cooller” Singov, and Johan “Toxic” Quick.
This season marks the first time in its history that the CPL relied primarily on the feedback from the community in selecting the games for its tournaments. The overwhelming vote to bring back Quake 3 as the one-versus-one tournament game by almost 80% of the community and the CPL World Partners could not be ignored.
The CPL’s One-Versus-One Competition Committee has extensively discussed the negative impact to the sport of changing games from year to year. In an effort to provide stability to the deathmatch community, the CPL is pleased to also announce that Quake 3 has been unanimously selected as the one-versus-one competition game for its 2007 World Season.
Quake 3 has been widely regarded as the best deathmatch platform to date. With the advanced spectator features including GTV and Multi View Demos (MVD), the CPL would like to ensure that its tournaments are run on the best platforms and will provide the best tournament experience for both the competitors as well as spectators. The CPL plans to continue to use Quake 3 until such time as another game can offer the same features and game play that has made Quake 3 the best choice for one-versus-one tournaments.
For those that wish to participate in the historic return of Quake 3 to the professional gaming circuit, players can still get free spectator passes for the CPL 2006 Championship Finals on this page.
