1.8T w 150hp is hardly an efficient engine, actually far from it
a simple and cheap civic si has a NA 1.6 engine with 170hp, not to mention a lot more reliable than the VW 1.8T engine. mine has only been reason for joy so far

even a 106 gti gets 130 from a 1.6, so i guess its not that efficient, but its very tuneable! so am not too bothered!

If I really were looking for the most efficient engine I would always look for the most fuel efficient engine for a given hp and torque.

Oh and maybe it's news to you but engines actually have two types of output. Hp and torque ;)

that you obviously need higher revs for reaching those hp and therefore usually burn a lot more fuel. Which in turn should not be good for the efficiency.
Also low torque is bad for the acceleration.

high torque needs higher displacement, so it needs more fuel and is less efficient
also, as long as power is the same, torque plays almost no role in acceleration

A) You say higher torque needs more fuel and is less efficient. Yes, high troque does need more fuel. But as you said Power is (proportional to) the product of torque and revs.
Therefore if you have higher torque you also get more power which in turn effects the efficiency. The point is you can't say for sure if the efficiency will be better or worse. It depends on more factors.

B) Torque is the main factor in acceleration. period. Yes of course you can transform revs to get more torque nevertheless it still is torque that accelerates you car.

C) If you have less torque and still get the same or more hp you obviously have to run your car at higer revs. And then the efficiency suffers, at least one you have exceeded 2000 prm.

i agree that good constant low end torque usually gets a car rolled faster in 1st gear
the difference, when we talk about car engines, is negligible; you dont need low end torque since you can rev the engine up and let the clutch come slowly while maintaining high revs so you get the car rolling with enough power
also, the gearing has to be chosen appropriately, and the parts have to be stronger if you have a engine with higher torque, which is why bigger engine with higher torques have their place in trucks, trains etc. while smaller high reving engines get their places in cars or especially sports cars
apart from these differences, again, power is a product of torque and revolutions, so in performance, only one value plays a role, and that is power [BHP/KW]

about efficiency, youre right with your statement that it depends on many more factors; and tbh, i dont wanna talk about it, since i dont care about efficiency in performance cars; and if i dont want a performance car but a daily use car, i'll ofc get a diesel

I've got a MK 4 of my own, they're very solid cars and great performers.
i recently aquired a BMW series 3 so i'll be selling mine, which is a shame. The Golf IV was by far the car that I enjoyed the most so far.
