Thats a problem with the codec for lower processor speeds, you need like at least 2.4 ghz for it to run good on the codec.

Never liked it, yet people keep using it and dvix has worked for years and is only like 1% more file size.

the codec isn't crap. just that many people don't know how to encode effectively with it.. and they don't really pay attention to decoding either. a lot of people simply increase the bitrate to get better quality but that can have negative effects such as poor playback on some computers.

heh, for the first time ever, Windows Media Player gave me the solution here, in VLC it would lock up every few seconds and with WMP it worked fine for me

btw my pc is pentium 4 (prescott) 3000mhz and it has 512mb of ddr400 so it's outdated BUT i'm kinda sure it is supposed to play any movie just OK. hell, i've watched 1024*something videos - just fine. don't code with that x264 shit!

Ok i attend your divx version for full viewing because i get to many errors, even with vlc, i can watch the movie in bs player but then i have to watch it in slomo :D, in vlc it stops every 10 secs, i mis 5 secs and then it continues :D. so i await your xvid :D.

Except that video though, froze more than once. :[

well i only use mpc with ffdshow stuff and some seperate codecs to encode stuff myself, and i can watch everything, just not mp4 files wich tend to work with like 10% less frames, so in the end its unsynched audio/video, then it catches up again, and goes out of synhc, its crap! and its not my pc :>

h264 is too shitty atm, needs more solid codecs so even 1080p works fullspeed :>

i've said it quite a few times before.. the tech behind h.264 codecs is definitely going down the right path and is making good progress atm. however, it isn't really meant for the mainstream users as yet and due to it having a complicated encoding process when compared to that of XviD, many people turn on the wrong settings which results in bad playback performance. a well encoded h.264 video at relatively high resolution should playback fine on an average computer by today's standards. check the HD trailers over at www.apple.com . you most likely won't have a problem playing their quicktime h.264 vids.

well, i used to be able to watch upto 720, 1080 stuttered like crazy.. but i just updated my ffdshow and installed additional 264 drivers, tested another 1080p ( http://www.apple.com/trailers/lions_gate/bug/hd/ )

seemed to work fine, so i guess it was just an old driver \o/

edit: mp4 also seemed to run ok, i think its just the shotgun sounds/animations that make it look like crap :P

see? :) most of the time, x.264 playback issues are due to outdated software and codec conflicts. sadly, the highly advanced features it possesses is also its downfall as it's not easy to use for everybody.

it's not that much better, and it's a huge inconveniance for most people, having to learn how to play a video file is a pretty stupid thing to have to do

actually x264 is an improvement over XviD in many ways. it gives MUCH better quality for the mb. the only drawbacks atm are painfully slow encoding times (which doesn't affect the people who watch) and higher system requirements which in reality are not very high considering the kinda rigs most people have these days.

there's hardly anything to learn about playing an x.264 file.. you just have to double click 2 installers instead of 1 which doesn't take too long. there's always VLC if you don't wanna do even that. about playback issues, in many cases they are caused by things like having codec packs installed which is a bad idea anyway, no matter what file you are trying to play.

there's was similar whine during the days when people were switching over to XviD from DivX. so many people complained but in the end, they got used to it and it seems to be accepted now that XviD does a better job than DivX in most cases. however, with HD videos gaining momentum, there needs to be improvements in codecs to cover the limitations of ASP and that's why AVC codecs such as x.264 are being developed. it is quite likely that they will be used a lot in the near future so it would be a good idea to get used to them now :)

it has too... well atleast some new codec has to gain popularity with the masses or else we can kiss HD video goodbye. XviD is slowly showing its age.

I would really like to watch this, but with a 40k/bs download speed from that host, its unlikely to reach my hard drive within the next 3 hours (and I do have a few other things to do :p).

Yeah, the video seemed to contain mostly rail/LG kills which aren't all that exciting most of the time... just lock crosshair on enemy and fire.

yea, you don't see many air rockets in Q4 at all... I guess it's because the player is so heavy that it's hard to really lift him into the air.

My sound would go out of sync after about 30-60 seconds of playback then I'd have to use the search bar to start the video from where I was at to watch it for another 30-60 seconds. Overall - quite annoying.

Lower spec PCs could try CoreAVC as the decoder, it's commercial but has the edge when it comes to decoding performance.

i never playd quake 4 b4 but is it me or the rail shots boring and not that hard looking like cpma rail flicks. watching vo0 rail wus art, watching quake 4 rails its more like point click cant miss, could be wrong just didnt get the same affect after watching vo0 montage and demos/

Well I agree that shaft might not be so cool to see, but actually some shaft frags are really difficult to do, cause they keep hitting constantly and that's kinda hard.

I dunno if it has been changed but last time I played Q4 the shaft was crazy. Crazy as in a bit too easy to use, especially on LAN.

Oh well, it might just be that Q4 actually is that boring to watch. Never really watched any games due to the GREAT streams we've had before.

The domination of the shaft prior to 1.3 has been replaced by the rocket launcher now, except that it's now retardedly easy to use. Personally, I think 1.2's shaft was better for competition because it really rewarded precision aim (see: Stermy vs. cl0ck @ Lanwar) and helped determine fragging ability better. 1.3's shaft is useless in comparison now, at least IMO -- it's, at best, a middle-priority weapon next to the hyberblaster and shotgun.

that's because zooming info is not transferred over network. so you didn't see it in any demos unlike in q4.

overall it was an ok movie i thought. i had several problems trying to watch it with vlc though. frame drops, sound drops, vlc crashes etc. i dont usually have problems watching x264 videos but this one was especially problematic.

i thought the frags, considering it was quake 4, were decent although q3 frag movies seem to be more interesting. but with that said 8/10. i can only imagine how big of a pain in the ass it was to make a q4 movie as the game seems rather unreasonable even when playing.

It was allright. No original music, no special editing, no very special content (though that one 3rdperson midair rocket was sick and that av3k frag was as well). But well, good initiative.

for me watching 1.2 is like riding a bus. i always fall asleep.

edit : like lauwef said, 400mb is also way too big for a medium resolution 10 minute movie using x264. you can get good quality for that duration for around 300mb using XviD and with x264 it should only be easier to get better quality.

a proper x264 encoding should have been around 200mb for this.

Very nice quality for q4, but still, too high codec settings.

For me it runs more smooth with ffdshow and wmpc instead of vlc (but vlc doesn't go out of sync like wmpc does sometimes)

Frags themselves were, not super duper impressive, but from one tourney it wasn't bad, strange no more frags from the 2v2s were shown.

Anyway, now ppl can see it's possible to pretty nice quality with q4, just need a bith smoothness (multisampling / a little bit motionblur)

releasing this as x264 in the first place may be a mistake, because animosities towards this codec will rise with every person not being able to watch the movie properly. imagine u had offered an xvid AND x264 version at the same time, everyone could pick their favourite codec, impositioning a new format is not the way it should be. and to be honest, I'd rather watch an xvid with lower quality but smooth instead of the highres x264 version

in like 1 year, the problem shouldn't be there anymore since hardware improvements do the rest.. :)

And to the comment concerning the switch from divx to xvid, that was in no way comparable to the switch from xvid to x264. Not everyone wants to download a player for every codec, and even in VLC, the new one sometimes won't play properly. Look at Xvid, no problem there...

Was that boring only for me? And I had high expectations for this movie. Twas my first q4 movie, and was expecting a lot more in content. Codec was good for me, runned smoothly with VLC.

But q4 looks so slow. And so rail/shaft-friendly :/
I mean usually, previous quake frag movies have the majority of their frags made with a rocket launcher, q4 is all about rail/shaft as it seems.

Can't really blame the movie maker for q4 frags being utterly boring.

However, the movie maker CAN be blamed for the fact that 95% of the frags he chose to display are made when the player is leading with +15 frags, making the frags even less impressive (if thats possible).

it's not his fault that the best frags were made when the player had that kind of lead, so this point is not valid.

It's really really hard to please the q3 fans with this game and making a movie using it. And that's really not my aim at all. Because i knew going into this that maybe %5 of q3 players that watch this will even remotely find it interesting. good luck if you're planning to make another movie soon. just one suggestion : try and read up on some encoding guides on the net if you have the time. most people shouldn't really have a problem with a 900x600 30 fps x.264 video, the system requirements are not THAT high. i'm guessing some improper settings were enabled leading to the playback issues people are complaining about. i could be wrong though.

*also, i really apologize for everyone with playback issues. I knew that people were going to have problems but for some reason i released it anyways, *slaps forehead, doh*

As someone who enjoys playing Q4 competitively, I also enjoy watching a lot of the Q4 frag videos out there as long as they aren't all-rail. I find them to be more of a raw demonstration of skill than an attempt to hot-dog for the camera, although I've always gone for the movieworthy frags in duels myself. :P

With that said, the frags were consistently good. As it was mentioned before, av3k certainly did steal the show -- he shows he has one of the best HB's in the world in the clip at 7:14. Other clips, such as forever's prediction rocket on Toxic and pretty much all of Toxic's clips versus fake_id (sorry, Chris :<), were pretty sick, too. My personal favorite would have to be Cooller's awkwardly angled rocket juggle vs. 2GD.

On the other hand, Randy, now that you've learned to make a high-quality frag video with well-designed recam tools, LEARN TO COMPRESS!! :P

As a movie I don't see anything spectacular here, as a frag showoff, well this is q4's problem, but it indeed is very boring, and what tops it is the fact that it's encoded just horribly, these days both x264, aswell XviD formats or only XviD are neccessery because releasing only x264 you are limiting your watchers really. I can't play this thing back properly, sounds are offset from the first second on and it starts to lag horribly after 2 minutes, I can't even rate this movie. I don't have a very good pc, but I can watch ALOT of mp4's, which means that this one just isn't encoded properly.

Bloodshed 1.3 (WCG Italy Highlights) I plan to release Friday (12/22/06). The 1.3 point release has really helped me bring a whole new look and feel to Quake 4 that i think everyone will enjoy.
