Upon pondering, I believe that it is indian in origin (which is why we cannot read what it says) The swastika is an indian symbol (in red) which also has a dot in some of the corners, a perfect example is on wikipedia:

As you can see, it's red, has curving tendrils and dots. I could not figure out any importance with regards to the string, other than it could be to ward off evil eye or a curse, but no reliable sources for that.
