So, the groundwork will have to be done at universities and independently funded laboratories. But, how are they supposed to drum up support if the media aren't even talking about it?

It is true to an extent. The drug has had some successful tests in animals etc, and could quite possibly work in humans, but a lot more research and tests are required before it could be commercially produced.

I mean which university would turn down a project which has such a high probability of curing cancer and saving millions of lives thus bringing lots of fame and most likely donations to that university?

But instead they go with the project about possible impotence of albino frogs with three eyes.

And saying that the pharma companies won't invest in it because they can't make money? Sure they could make more money with a more complex cure. But not earn any money?

On a side note:

In the German science magazin I got a subcription of they mentioned the same thing just this month, however:

1. They already tested it with a on a guy with blood cancer.
2. It is only working with slowly advancing cancers not the fast ones.
3. Side effects are that also dormant dangerous genes will be reactivated.
4. Research on this exact matter are going on in Heidelberg, one of the most reknown medical universities in Germany.
