i use DVI output on my PC and the cable converts it to HDMI which i plug in to my TV.

So it's just a matter of getting the right cable? Presumably it's worthwhile me just getting a decent PC (i.e, that can playback bluray HD DVD copies), plugging it into TV, and I'm set?

yeah then you need sound.. i use my computer speakers to for it because my TV hasnt got any "external" connector to the HDMI for audio since it's made to have audio and video in the same cable.. performance shouldnt matter if you run 2 screens so just check out what resolution your GFX can handle and if your processor can actually keep up with a HD quality movie... then sound is your next problem :)

I hear that you need quite a fast CPU to play HD DVD quality movies. If I'm lucky, my laptop will work (no idea if it has DVI output even)... I shall investigate the audio thing, thanks.

I figure if you get a proper speakerset, that has to plug into the TV anyway, right? So you can probably plug the PC into that too?

i've got a 3500+ and it handles HD movies. a p4 1.9ghz doesn't for example.

my amd 3200 has problems when a lot is going on. 99% of the time it fine :P

you can also look at the CoreAVC decoder if you're gonna be playing off a PC. it's not free but it's easily the fastest software based decoder available today. should help a lot with playback and you will still be able to use your PC for other things.

The new GeForce 8x00 cards, the low priced onces, can decode HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc very well, so you won't need a very powerful CPU. Install PureVideo HD to utilize the cards for this purpose.

Yeh, but they're very expensive. I stupidly figured that movies would come out with both formats, but didn't actually look into this. I'll just buy the discs once I get a combo player (in a couple of years when they're cheap)...

You shouldn't have any problems at all with that laptop. It's a core 2 duo so it's better than what link has.

Also that laptop has a DVI port and S-Video. Either can output to your TV fine. It's just getting the right cables.

Also for the sound I guess you would simply hook up a cable from your audio port on your laptop directly into your TV. You might be lucky and have all the necessary cabling that came with your TV and/or laptop.

Just last night i set up a hdmi/dvi cable from my 8800 to my plasma. Are you guys saying that audio should come out my tv using dvi/dhmi? Thats what im trying to do but my audio is still coming out of my computer. Was thinking of running cable from sound card to tv maybe that will do the trick

I don't think HDMI from you graphics card will transfer any sound. I'd be very surprised if it did.

a big problem for people now HD and Blu Ray is beomcing a standard is replacing standard DVD. so they decided to make upscaling players to improve the quality a bit so DVDs don't look as bad on large screens (obviously can't create pixels that are not there)

I was under the impression you had a HD DVD player and thought most were upscaling for old DVDs :)

The quality is pretty good actually. When there's a big expanse of one colour, it is very grainy (unlike HD stuff), but cityscapes etc are really nice, much better than normal.

I use newsleecher along with its supersearch feature, definitely worth the dosh.

I'm currently using newsdemon at the moment because they are the only decent usenet provider who use paypal + I had a voucher. I'll be jumping back over to giganews next month.

Giganews has a true retention time of 120 days. Newsdemon say they offer 85 but it's more like 45-50.

I'd recommend grabit by the way, all those commercial ones seem like absolute shite.

I switched to giganews by the way, I was sick of the shit retention with newsdemon, seriously... it must only be 40-50 days, quite a far cry from the 85 they advertise. I tested out giganews... downloaded a 94 day old file and didn't even have to repair it. Pretty happy so far :)).

Little bit more expensive though, but worth it I reckon. For their full package with the 20 connections and shit it's £16.99/month, but to be honest, you could probably get away with the 10 connections for £13.99.

I use a DVI->HDMI converter-cable from my computer to TV which is digital.
For sound I juse use a normal Sound cable from soundcard to TV-input which is Analog, but it works excellent.

I have the image working, but not the sound for some reason. I think it's down to using the wrong HDMI port or something... that's my job for this evening.

Im almost positive that no computer supports HDMI-sound, you need to get a seperate cable for that.
