i was just doing it by looking at the legs and concentrating on which side the spinning leg should be on, behind or infront of the other. got it to switch a few times :)

simply concentrate on the shadow for a sec.

K i got it to work, look just at the shadow then look at the top right of your screen, in the corner of my eye she goes around the other way

for those who can't see it: best way to switch i found by closing my eyes for about 200-300ms at a certain moment; if you see her going clockwise, close your eyes just before the outer leg hits the outmost left; and contrary if you see it counterclockwise you shut them when the outer-leg is on the right..

I found the best way to do it was to move my fingers in front of my eyes a bit, suppose it's like blocking them out, found it really easy to switch then. To make sure it isn't a trick like that idiot posted, I opened the gif up and it really does only go one way. For me it defaults to clockwise... what does everyone else get?

when i do it now i can make it go the other way just blinking at the right time - from then on it just stays that way until i blink again :p

I understand the illusion that because its a silhouette you can't orient the image to know which way she is turning, since front and back look the same.

But I can't for the life of me make myself see it the other way, she always turns left even if I close my eyes and image it spinning to the right, she still goes left.

I'm right handed.

edit: omfg it switched direction right in front of my eyes I dont even know what I did [+] It still defaults to left (anti-clockwise) since i checked before this post

I'd say she's actually turning counter-clockwise (although I can't picture it this way myself). If she was turning clockwise you wouldn't be able to see the shadow of her foot on the floor when you do. Sorry for spoiling the illusion.. :(

hmm actually, from the shadow she should be spinning ccw, but from the height that her foot is at when it's on the opposite sides she should be spinning cw (it appears lower when it's moving from right->left). Maybe that's part the reason why different people see it differently.

and maybe it's just a cool gimmick to kill 10mins of time. :)

That is much simpler to observe spinning in the opposite direction but not as impressive as the girl :).

Ya. Although that's not the best example. The one I originally saw started morphing shape depending on which way you saw it spinning. It was pretty amazing.. ;)

There is, follow some of the advice people have been talking about and you can get it to work, it's an extremely impressive illusion when you get it to work, but trust me, it's not some kind of trick gif (as in not a valid optical illusion) because I've been in the room with a different person and we've both been seeing it go in opposite directions at the same time. I thought it was stupid at first too (see my first post about it) but it really is impressive when you get it to work.

Look at the wireframe cube Jabb0r posted, basically the same illusion only much simpler to observe. The gif is much cooler though.

left or right is not a good way to describe this since you dont have a reference point ,they do move left and right . but if you put the cube/woman in the center of a clock, and pick a corner of the cube, or a limb of the woman, it moves counterclockwise. try it.

What? Don't get what you mean, have you looked at the cube thing and seen it rotating in different directions? It goes either clockwise or counter-clockwise, if you really can't get THAT one to work then you must not be trying hard enough at all.

yes, they go counterclockwise, both the woman and the cube. just saying left/right is not the same as cw/ccw.

From what you said though, it seems you're implying that they're both going counter-clockwise all the time, which isn't true, I mean really they aren't actually going in either direction.

they go ccw, so half the circle they're going right, and half left if the reference point is your eyes. however they're going ccw all the time.

theres a little dot in the centre, stare at that and the picture is in full colour, stare away from that and you see its true greyness, stare back at the dot in the centre and it appears in colour again!

uhh, for me, the thing is in control to begin with, and always changes to grey at a predetermined point in the video, and never changes back, no matter what I do. I tried what you said several times.

Err... I never ONCE released that looking back at the dot makes it turn colour again, that's crazy... It's not as vivid the second time 'round but still.
