Actually I did about half my drawings at school in ball point pen, and I can draw realistically, only new thing is the size he is doing it. There was a small art movement called hyper-realism which did the same thing with paint. Oversized photo-superealistic paintings, bleh.

btw; interesting article. found some interesting clues about how this works when i read Ramachandran (2003), he speculates that e.g. when you watch cubism, you can have all the relevant aspects of a face (that would normally excite the face concept) displayed on one side, giving rise to a hyperstimulated face-concept that is more real than real. similiarly he argued that an animated female body can be more feminine than any female if you subtract more and more of the "male" associations. some dreams really feel more real than reality - it's really cool when one thinks about future of e.g. VR :D

This is just me but I'm usually not impressed by just reproductions (by whichever means) without any form of interpretation. When i was in art school i made some pretty cool abstract/artsy drawings, too, showed them to one of the artists who was there as a teacher and he said that yeh they're ok but that's it. The problem is not about how pretty or art-like it is, the problem lies in the background. Artists dont just reproduce, and when they do, like richter, they have an extensive background and really think about it. In this case, it's more about the amount of work it takes, there's IMHO no art in it.
