That was one of the most insane ways of riding i have ever seen, loved how he raced those avalanches! To answer your previous question: I have only been to swedish resorts and some norwegian, the boarder between sweden and Norway provides great jumps, but the off-pist riding isnt as good as in other places. I'd really like to go to Finland sometime, or Salt Lake City. What about you?

just download any Standard films DVD (White balance, Draw the line, Catch the vapors) got loads of JJ in it. Absinthe films (More, Optimistic?) have the best offpiste freeriding though. Went to the Alps (3 valleys) which was cool with fantastic offpiste and the Pyrenees which wasnt quite so great. I'm spending the next year living in Canada in a ski resort so i get great boarding all season any day i want :D

I'd like to go to a Skandi resort but like you said they all seem like park stuff and quite small, sure its fun though. Also super expensive

3 valleys is like val thorens right? Been there a while ago it was the best place on earth for boarding. How is it compared to other resorts you've been to?

val t is part of the 3 valleys on the far side, but i didnt rate it. la tania is where we go and a great place, nice and low key with access to the full range

But... they do have Mojo and a lot of French but nothing's perfect!

Started boarding 2 years ago, always on ski's before that. I could ski quite well (steep pow and stuff) but I like boarding better already though I'm still a novice :) Much more natural feeling, the movement just comes without thinking. Bought a house, so no money+time this year :((

I was thinking of going to norway/sweden next year, but my gf (even more novice than me) hates button lifts. Can you recommend a place in scandinavia where they have a lot of blue slopes and chair/cabin lifts? any tips welcome!

As far as Norway goes, Trysil is perhaps the best; esp. for novice/intermediate. map

My mates and I tried snowboard for two seasons, but eventually reverted to skiing. Partly because we couldn't speed straight down 75 with snowboard without losing control. I tell you, going straight down there with good skis is one of the more awesome things I've ever done :D

Just following the slope is awesome on ski's, only turn when the slope turns. Big carving turns and some highspeed jumps too, feels like a super-G :D

Unfortunately you do that on blue slopes mostly and it can be a bit dangerous with novices all around you. Moving gates I call 'm ;) I'm always in control and keep a safe distance though, I hate it when I see people going down the slope totally out of control... I've seen some terrible accidents :(

I'd like to stay in a hotel, but they seem quite expensive compared to for example Austria? Normally I'd pay around 500,- p.p. for 7 nights including breakfast & dinner but in Norway I'm looking at 700-900.

Edit: I see it's a black slope, though I've read it's more similar to a red slope in Austria/France. If it's really steep it would have had moguls :) In Les Arcs I skied the black slope next to the speed track. The guys going down the speed track were insane, the world record was set there, 240 something K's :o

Btw, I had my worst fall there on that black slope. It hadn't snowed for weeks and it was icy with rocks protruding the snow. I got a bit overconfident and went down the fall line too quickly and fell. It was the only time I just couldn't stop sliding, it was so bumpy and icy, each time I almost had my ski's under me I got launched into the air again. 100 meters down the slope I finally came to a rest with only a slightly twisted knee. Lucky me :)

yeah I had a fall like that this January. Luckily, minus the injury tho.
Even got people applauding from the lift for "style" :(

I was freezing afterwards from all the snow everywhere, cause half of the way I was going head first.

Wasn't really that injured, pain disappeared after half an hour or so. Still, falling hard sucks, especially when you've got a crowd watching ;)

Compared to the places i've been - Sierra Nevada/Spain and St. Anton/Austria - the black slopes are, in general - unlike the prices - not as steep @Trysil. :)

Still, bumps suck when speeding. Once I thought I was almost at the bottom of a steep slope and went straight down, only to discover there was still a very bumpy area coming at the end.

The only thing you can do when doing bumps @60 K/h is try to keep your balance and quickly say a couple of prayers :)

True. Getting up and out early in the morning to really speed is the thing; no novice-ports and smooooooth slopes ^.^

This guy makes my life of sitting infront of the computer and whining on ESR seem a bit shallow.

Maybe you people here can help me with my small dilemma.

I'll be going to Superdevoluy with some friends in April and I'm not sure whether I should rent skis like always and everyone else in my group. Or if I should invest in buying some protectors and learn snowboarding in that week.
Already tried snowboarding for two hours and I did ok I guess, so I probably won't be fed up after day one.

So the problem is: would you think it's worth to spend that week snowboarding and hope that I can learn it on my own or maybe hook up with some other beginners. (definately not rich enough for an instructor)
Or should I go rent skis, speed down the slopes, fool around and become a little bored after day four cause it's "only" a 100km resort. But at least I could stay with the group.

Try snowboarding, or blades if your bored of regular skis, thats my advice. The thing with snowboarding is that the first two days will test your temper the exact way (and i have experience) that it will when you quit smoking. The first two days are the worst, and on the third day its like you are reborn.

And on the plus side, besides the fact that its fucking worth it, you can drown your sorrows in alcohol the first two nights and still get a fucking amazing trip, since your not going with family :).

I know from experience I'm quite resistant to frustation so I'm not really afraid of that.

It's more like the thing what will be more fun. Learning something new alone (if I'm unlucky), or getting a little bored but with friends.

The alcohol part is a given in any case :D

Also, I will definately try snowboarding eventually (already got a female friend lined up for teaching :) ) it's just the question if I try it this time or maybe next year... :/

I agree with GB, the end result is always better when you learn the basics well.

It usally is quite nice to take a couple of lessons with people in the same skill category, you make friends easily, especially if you're all novices :)

Yeah unless you can go with some people around the same skill level it can be quite annoying. The 2nd time I ever went snowboarding(after only a one day experience on a very small mountain) I went with a couple of my good friends who were all very experienced in the sport, and I tried to keep up with them for the week.

Needless to say I fell HARD many times, as they would all fly down the hills hitting jumps and cliffs etc, and I would stupidly follow and face plant :p It was still fun but very painful, however alcohol later those nights was a great solution to this :) Fortunately I wasn't seriously injured, but on the upside after two days of trying to follow them my skills were much much better and by the last day I was able to keep up with them decently well...I still fell a lot more than them and couldn't do half the tricks they could, but it was rewarding nonetheless.

See if you can convince one of your buddies to do it with you, because imo snowboarding is so much more fun than skiing, and after a couple days of going down a 100km resort if you are a good skier I'm sure you will be bored out of your mind. More fun to learn and fall than just go down fast...ski lift...down fast...ski lift, etc...

Yes, that's a dilemma when you get better. Skiing / boarding time decreases and lift time increases. It rules to be a novice again, slowly going down and enjoying :) I'll probably face the same problem in a couple of years though ;/

but from what I see skiing is still somewhat faster than boarding (at the same skill level I mean) So I guess boarding is the way to go till I turn 50 or something :P

Last year I saw an old guy boarding, he was boarding nicely. I reckon you can reach at least 60 :)

Skiing is definately faster than boarding, though my friends could almost keep up with me on their boards. Some of them are a bit crazy though!

Yeah, I guess I'll see what sports i can do then. At least i can always fall back to sailing.
