400cc is a good starter point for a sports bike. NC23, NC29, NC30, NC35 zx4r gsxr all 400s and all have bags of character. 400 has good insurance rates also.

I know, I have a Honda NC30 and I think it's the best looking and sounding bike in the world. No, really, it is! :-)

Dunno why everyone has to get sports bikes though. There are loads of lovely bikes not in the supersports category.

First of all a 250cc two-stroke bike is a *fast* bike (60bhp).. seriously quick. You WILL NOT ride one on anything less than a full A licence. Think Aprilia RS 250... full racing replica monster. Ninja 250 is four-stroke afaik, but still, you'll be needing an A licence.

Off the top of my head... if you gain the equivalent of a full A licence under the age of 21(ie. passing test) it will be called an A1 licence that restricts you to ride with 33bhp max until EITHER you're 21 or have held that licence for 2 years. Then it updates to category A. Once its A you can ride any bike you want at any power.

If you take your test on a bike any less than 500cc or less than 33bhp then you hold a A1 licence indefinitely unless you retake test afaik. People with bikes like Vespa's usually do this.

If you take a CBT you can ride upto 125cc or a certain power (can't remember what it is) using 'L' plates. Why you would want to do this I don't know but lots of kiddies seem to do it. You can ride an Aprilia RS125 this way but the insurance premium is extortionate because of the "learner" status. I woudn't recommend it.

I suggest taking your time and just doing a full licence. Like another poster stated, anything less it just "dumb" and not worth anything. Bare in mind that in september time this year (2008) the motorcycle licence test will change and apparently become much more difficult.

Oh and btw bikes are amazing and thrilling but judging my the last journal you made about cars, this bike thing is probably a fad and will wear off. ;-)

If youre over 21 just do direct access. It allows you to ride whatever you want.

If you dont want a big bike, dont buy one. You always have the license to get that next step up when you decide your old one isnt for you ;)

theory first, then Direct access that can include my CBT, costing between 400 and 750 depending on where i go :(

£400 here for both. inc. rental of bike, equip, insurance, fuel and 3 days training
