I f'in loved smash brothers melee for the cube. I had tons of fun competing in it, and the game was very well suited to it with all sorts of advanced techniques and checks in the system to make sure nothing could really be abused. The highly skilled players were very well rewarded in the game for being able to do certain things and read the competition's mind.
However, smash brawl for the wii is a joke for competition. There's a random chance (1-3%, depending on if you are currently winning, I hear) that you will flop over and fall on your ass every time you start to run. Imagine if that happened in QuakeLive - you start a bunnyhop and trip, falling down unable to do anything until half a second later. They also removed 90% of the advanced techniques from the previous game, but the fact that tripping exists in the new game is enough to show how much they care about the competitive aspect that was almost perfect in the previous game...
Yahtzee's review of brawl didn't really mention this fact, so he isn't as in touch with competition to be taken seriously for games that go along with this site. Despite this, his reviews of single player games are usually really well done, and I am a loyal weekly viewer regardless of him bashing a game (for the wrong reasons) for which I had such high hopes.
I just figured maybe it would be an interesting read for people who are into competition (readers of this site) and are the slightest bit curious about how the latest smash games are for it.
