It's almost as if rehashing the same tired 1998 formula is not working anymore.

There are tons of ways to take FPS forward. If devs are not doing this then they deserve all they get.
Many people here said UT3 looks the same as all the other 2 years before it was a released, if a bunch of people on a game forum can forsee that then you really need to question the people who are actually making these games.

It's a nice game that has the best of UT and UT2004 tbh but I guess all new UT players got scared away in the buggy start :(

TDM is really enjoyable and I hope more will try it now when some mods and patches have made the game better :)

Just because a gametype was incredibly popular in 1997 doesn't mean it will be so popular today..

Players went mad for Doom and Quake because they were the first, because there was nothing else like it..

In a market saturated with FPS games, yours has to stand out and not be another lame boring rehash like Quake4 or a lame boring BUGGY rehash like UT3..

Epic spent years producing this game and it is a pile of shit. It didn't work out of the box and it was exactly the same as the other 15 UT games, just with shinier graphics..

UT2004 improved on UT2003 (golf clap), but little more. Without the fancy game modes, it would've been a worse failure than Q4. The movement was trash, let's hope that "gameplay" stays in the grave :]

UT2k4 was just what UT2k3 should have been at launch. It was more of an expansion pack than a game.

true. change name to Epic Fail Games. since '99 they pretty much blow.

I find the game appealing if you want to spend an hour or so in it. Good graphics and pancake-ing players with the Manta out of nowhere can be fun. The problem is that after a while, it gets frustrating.

Interesting article.. imo it boils down to the classic games being more or less out of "fashion" ;( Partly because of games like Q4, UT2003, Doom 3 abusing the titles' hype value with submediocre releases.

Also, as stupid as it sounds, the original Q3 and UT, together with the Matrix, were part of bringing scifi back in style. The scifi setting had been "lame" for about 15 years after Star Wars. Now it is "lame" again.

I'm not married to scifi personally. The fun part about Q3/UT is the "hyperreality" with insane weapons and bouncing/physics. TF2 has brought this back by making a "unserious" game, but set in current time. And succeeded.

I think the setting counts more than we think. TF2's solution + fancy team modes, is the way to go imo..

I think steampunk would be the way to go if what you're saying is true. Basically Bioshock.

Epic have the wrong approach on this game, since it's not bad at all and I like the TDM of it more than that of any other UT, but seriously, they release stuff ONLY for offline gaming, most of the maps are indeed such a joke what concerns gameplay (but oh what a good looking joke it is), and are there only to show off the eyecandy. Just yesterday I downloaded this official bonus mappack 3 thing just to find out that the mappers have come up with very nice looking visual concepts, but have totally failed to come up with a layout for the map that'd be playable anywhere else than on a FFA with million players. I'd like to put it that epic has good gameplay architects but no gameplay engineers that could tell the architects that whatever they have come up with isn't (or is) going to work. :/

Unreal Tournament 99 sold well because it was a gimmicky alternative to Quake 3 that played well with casuals. Casuals have long since abandoned Unreal Tournament style gameplay for "Tacticool" shooters like Counterstrike and Halo. When casuals make up a large majority of your userbase, you are at their whims as far as tastes are concerned. Lucky for Epic, they had Gears of War and engine sales to fall back on and I now argue that it's probably going to be their main focus from now on.

Unreal Tournament 3 was only finished because it was "expected" that Epic would make an UT on their brand new engine. The game sold poorly because Epic tried to make it a multiplatform release and thus did not give due attention to the PC market. Of course the PS3 market ignored it completely because "Unreal Tournament" was never a strong console brand in the first place, and UT3 was overshadowed by superior console offerings that catered more towards console tastes such as Call of Duty 4, Warhawk and Resistance: Fall of Man. As a result of the visual style, the game also did not scale down very well on slower PC's and looked like complete ass on all but high settings, where it looked like highly detailed but washed out.

I think that if Epic had canned the PS3/360 version of UT3 and had waited another six months to release the PC version it would have sold much better and been a much more complete game to boot. As it stands, it's a failure, but instead of having the nuts to admit that failure was the fault of poor management Epic simply seems content to blame PC gaming as a whole for their mistakes and continue printing money with UE3 licensing and working on Gears of War 2.

Bad form, Epic...bad form.

As for the fanbase, UT has a fanbase that's much more alike Rocket Arena 3. Ie. "quasi-casual", people who play competitively, but on public servers. In Q3, the "noob base" are more about "crAaAaazy" mods.

As for the game UT3, it's a great game. But it lacked hype, and a proper (non-beta) release.
