Arrw just won vs griffin on ztn after he was down 10:1 (?). Arrw was leading with 2 frags 1 min before map end, and hiding, then griffin took it to overtime 1s before map end. Arww made the sudden death frag then.
Arrw did tactical mistakes all the time, not timing etc, but his lg equalised it.

Is it true that maps can be dropped right at the beginning? If this is true and z4 and czm couldn't play their respective maps then I think it wasn't a very good idea. I speak purely as a quake spectator and not as somebody who roots for one particular country. It's a shame w can't watch players on their best maps for at least 1 map per match.

get a 2nd good map then maybe? if someones equally good at two maps, you'll see the one being dropped that the challenger feels less comfortable with. that way you'll still get some variety. don't think it's too bad, otherwise we'd only see t4 and hub games from americans, and ztn games by eastern europeans etc.

If you enjoy seeing Quake in the 'Esports' spotlight you had better hope there are American's and certain rules are adjusted to allow top players play on at least one of their top maps. Otherwise I don't suspect Quake's revival will last very long at all. As a pure spectator I was hoping to see top players play on their maps and I didn't instead I watched match's which were boring for the most part. I wonder how many people wished they saw more of CZM on hub and zero4 on t4? I know I did.

how about players pick a "home map" at the beginning of the tourney, play one match home, one match away. tie breaker will be different for each round...?

zero4 did well considering inactivity he has obviously improved which is the key thing here

czm was out of shape but an inshape czm (cpl finals) is not good enough to take some of the european and certainly not good enough to beat cypher

he needs his old form and then needs to improve on it

rapha needs to learn to play, losing to avek who so badly while avek was hitting absolute shit and was rapha was hitting with everything (more shots not just percentages) is not a good sign

rapha needs to get out of sk and find himself a team pretty damn quick and get to gamegune becuase I think he is capable of much more, or if he has a true love for the game he'll pay for himself and not rely on others

rapha have to learn some basic things like proper weapon choice -on t4 match against matrox, he was always using the bad weapon
also czm should rely more on LG on ztn, unlike he did against cypher, PG all the time was just lol

also z4 lost against cooller on dm6 in the past because timing problems
this time he learned timing on dm6, but he should not just rush like crazy at RA w/o health/armor all the time, especially against a timing machine like av3k; I don't get it why when playing difficult matches on t4, z4 was able to camp at YA till he gets up to 100 armor, then on dm6, where u deal with a much more stronger opponent (100 health and 150/200 armor is a medium value for a opponent stat there), he was just attacking all the way, from the beginning, many times with less than 50 armor

But, no offense to ESWC, this event was done terribly.

First off, GTV servers were a COMPLETE mess, they couldn't do something as simple as "Server 1 is Group A and B" and "Server 2 is Groups C and D".

No, instead we had to go through each goddamn channel to find games. It doesn't help that GTV is complete shit and hasn't been updated since 2001.

Not only that, but only 30% of games were PUT in GTV. I tried to watch as many as possible, and some of the BIGGEST games for this year (CZM vs Z4) weren't put on GTV? Pathetic.

Also, no recording? It's a SIMPLE console command to allow recording, and no staff could do it? We're sitting here watching these great games, and we can't record them?

Seems that ESWC could of done a lot better. Someone covering WC3 said that ESWC used an OLD version of Warcraft 3, so all the demos can't be watched with the new version. That means, all the people who want to watch the games, need to downgrade their WC3, replace DLL files, watch the games, then upgrade.

All and all nice tournament so far, nice to see 'newschool' players doing well.

Please don't talk about what you don't know. WC3 patch 1.22 came out on Monday. Would you really like to have a tournament with balance changes that haven't really been sussed out by the community? C'mon.

Well, I think that the features and options of it are completely too old.

I mean, the only way to find out who's in a channel, is by connecting to it. And even then, you have to put in console commands.

Some things I'd like to see in a new version of ANY GTV...

- Clicking rooms to join
- Seeing what players are in the room before joining
- better chat function, possibly in a different area, avoid console
- customization of hud/chat windows
- userlist, to see everyone that's connected, and how many people are connected

(Maybe some of these exists already, I just never found them.

You guys also must remember that they only provided the GTV masters. For those complaining about the other parts of GTV, myself and Slajer from Skylla provided the relays for the servers.

I had 3 ports running and was told that I was connected to all match servers, which they had running on 3 master GTV servers. This was why my relays had some matches that Skylla's did not. Regardless, I'm still not sure what happened with the czm-z4 match since I was up at 2:00am just to make sure that it was covered.

Please remember one thing in the bitching of the coverage of this event. I'm planning on using the stats and the interest of this event to show people that q3 is still alive and well and can generate a lot of interest. Those of you that just feel like going into the IRC channel and cussing the admins out can always go to the other organizations that are hosting a great game like q3.....oh wait.

Think of the alternatives. You could have had a game that did not support GTV that means that the game would have had to share time on a stream with the other games and you would have probably gotten to see less matches.

All I'm saying is that it's been a while since a tournament like this has generated this much interest and it's kinda nice. Let's support it so that we can HOPEFULLY see more like this.

All it proves is that people would rather watch the game than play it.

Look at Nascar. They have 100-200,000 people at each event. That doesn't mean that those 100,000 want to drive for Nascar.

Sponsorships are usually based on reach, not just on the players in the game. Look at the Super Bowl. There's only 2 teams in that game versus the whole league playing on an average Sunday but yet companies will spend 2.5 million on a 30 second ad there.

If we can start showing companies that their brands can reach X people, maybe we can start getting back into games that are fun again instead of playing games that people hate just for the money.

I'm suggesting that Q3 is one of the game that people hate. If the money support hadn't been there all these years, I seriously doubt anyone would even remember the game at this point. Even the CPM masters tournament that went on about a year ago had 500 spectators, of which I'm sure most have never even played CPM.

And of course I must comment on Sander:

Vo0 played very well. He has nothing to prove, but being competitive with the worlds best (the big names in his group) at such an early time really shows his potential. Both Zero4 and CZM both dropped maps to him: Hub and ZTN. Different maps, different players and very tough competition.

Not only that, Vo0 seems to be a beast on dm9. His execution is tactful and intelligent. He seems to have a little more trouble on the bigger, more open maps which have been played for a very long time. Nothing a good dose of experience won't solve.

Props to Sander for throwing himself into VQ3 and trying something new. Good fucking job. If you hang in there, and give this some time... the sky is the limit. Even when handicapped.

The rest of the tournament has been pretty good. Like most, I felt the GTV was done at an average level, but could be improved upon in the future. At least we have GTV!

ZeRo4 wasn't trying against Vo0 on hub. czm dismantled Vo0 57-5 on hub3aeroq3, and ZeRo4 could've beaten him pretty badly, too. He didn't have to beat Vo0, so didn't bother too much. His performances versus [an improved] av3k on hub was almost equal to rapha's; he is better than Vo0 on hub.

Vo0 also took a map from k1llsen -- nodm9, if I recall correctly. Vo0's improved magnificently in the short amount of time he's had to prepare. He'll be at finals, so should look out for him there.

not that the games were super serious but I was holding my own against him as little as a month ago, I played him last week and got utterly dismantled and didn't stand a chance, the improvement was very blatant, the guy is good and can only get better

providing avek keeps playing he's going to get better as well, he was god horrible online a few month back and this is a totally different player

hopefully we'll see arrw again because he has impossible aim

noctis did very well and should shut people up for a while, proved he has what it takes and he argubly had the hardest draw (along with czm) going into the play-off stage: a solid contender

I agree. Proper automatic match making a la Warcraft 3 is crucial to the mass success of this game - new players dont want to lose 50-0 all the time just because they always end up against a seasoned player.

Interesting idea on using ups to help categorize players. The problem with using single metrics to define players is that its very easy to exploit. Id say I fall in around about a 3.3 on your scale, but It would be very easy for me to avoid strafe jumping in order to get paired with lower players.

I think that a Trackmania esque system would be suitable, whereby your rank changed based on your performance relative to your opponents rank. If you are currently sitting at about a level of 2, and you kill someone who is around about a 3.5, then you can assume that the player is skilled not just in one field (eg strafe jumping), but a variety of areas that allowed them to defeat a higher ranked player.

Using this relative system could work out pretty well. Say a noob gets beaten by a moderate player, but its a close game, then the noob could be heavily rewarded for holding their own against a far more skilled competitor. Where as Trackmania is black and white (you beat them or you didnt), you could use the score, caps, KD ratio, average rank of opposing team vs average rank of your team etc to give a much higher fidelity to the rank changes and rewards.

I totally agree that matchmaking is probably the most critical aspect of Quake Live being a success. I don't particularly want to get my ass handed to me every match by all you ninja's, and you don't want to get stuck trashing me who isn't a challenge ;)

Nice thought, but I don't think 5 different levels are enough. But your system could be used for a fast classification at the beginning.

he didnt attend the tournaments in that time. probably thinking he would be nearly top 10. and thinking it wont profit. after PK he maybe thought he would make a chance.

If on and off means 1 vq3 duel every few months. :)

Few comments from games I saw on gtv

voO put up a good fight on behalf of the promoders, taking maps off z4 and czm. Whoring rg hard :). Be interesting to see him at next tournament.

z4 was fun to watch in group stages. Rockets and flick rails same as ever + he has a nice shaft now too. Would've loved to see him play t4. He needs a jump pad to RA on hub though :)

Chance vs fox on hub was great game. Chance actually had it won - with about 5s to go, he was up by one and then pressed fire to respawn when he didnt have to. Fox killed him and it went to overtime.

Rapha didn't do as well as I expected from the hype I've heard. I got the impression that he has been the strongest usa dueler out of the group that have been practicing together (from peoples comments at esr). Perhaps it was partly nerves or that he performs best against players who's styles he knows e.g. he seemed to perform best against chance rather than other players.

Jibo vs noctis was a great set of matches. Noctis managed to beat jibo (a pseudo-russian :P) on ztn and took every mega :O. p-dm6 could've gone either way, but jibo won a few crucial battles at the end to take the series.

I'm so sad noctis didn't win vs fox, he really had a chance ='(. But on the other hand I'm glad, he confirmed he can translate his skills to big LAN's & vs big players. We haven't seen the last of him, that's for sure.

Well since nobody paid much mind to my DKT interview post ( http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=1577208 ), I'll just post this in here and hopefully get some feedback.

First off, let me just comment that groups were rather unbalanced. Both Rapha and Chance gave Av3k and fox a tougher time than a lot of players who barely came out of the weaker groups could give the top 4 right now.

A more delicate balancing of the groups and a bigger elim bracket leading into a double elim final 8 might have given some of the less LAN primed players a chance to get in a good rhythm and put together a more serious challenge to these aimbeasts in the final 4 (Cypher, Av3k, Fox). For example I don't think Jibo would be where he is now without the good fortune of his group or his post-group draw.

For me, Rapha should have been in group A, swapped for DDK.. I bet he would have beaten fooki and maybe taken a map off Cypher (hub or dm6.. Rapha is absolute monster on dm6 and hub when he's playing well)

Chance should have been in group B for Falcuma.. Probably would've beaten Arrw and Griffin (he beats griff online quite consistently).. Would've made for an interesting showdown between him and RazerJ.. RazerJ plays super defensive, but thats exactly the style of player Chance likes to exploit. I bet Chance could have taken that group with a good game against Noctis and RazerJ 2nd'd.

Or put Av3k in group C, and I doubt czm would have made it out. Not to knock czm but I think that group was probably the weakest on paper, considering how the online practicing between the Americans was going. Av3k would have topped the group imo, z4 2nd, and czm would have been close behind.

That would lead to a more interesting finals bracket imo.

I'd love to hear from some of the players about the afterhours practice that went on after the quarters finished. It wouldn't surprise me if someone like Rapha was monstering all over Jibo and Av3k and others, forcing them to look elsewhere for practice games. (Who likes losing practice games over and over.. not good for the confidence) I bet czm and chance also probably put some hurt on some people, having acclimated a bit more to LAN aim, gameplay and jetlag.

Czm didn't really get any LAN practice in, and rapha only briefly lanned with chance before he flew to cali where lanned quite a bit with Zero4. It's really one of the major problems facing esports as a platform for competition.. Too many games in a short period of time, not enough time to get settled in before each game, and just comfort issues really wreak havoc with the players ability to really show what they are capable of.

The other big problem is always the lack of a concentration friendly environment.. Remember the isolation booths that WCG famously put out for the comfort of the players? The reality is, all you need is a cooperative and respectful crowd, but thats a hard thing to come by when you have a less than refined etiquette standard for spectating. (what the average attendee will simply dismiss as a "bunch of hardcore dudes playing video games.")

Loud talking, insufficient warmup times, etc, all have broken the live competition careers of many fabulous gamers who simply couldn't adjust to a wholly different environment than the utter silence of their game rooms at home. Tennis and golf both have rigid rules of conduct for spectators, and its a beautiful thing to witness. Of course, neither one requires utter silence from its viewers for 15 solid minutes at a time, but thats probably a good thing

Hindsight is 20/20 and I think everyone realizes these groups could have been done better. C and D were both scary groups on paper, just look at the ESR comments. But playing out hypotheticals like you're doing? pointless.

Hell man, if I could have predicted that they would get the groups so wrong I might have thought about making a post about who should go where, or if I even thought for one second that any would have cared about my input, then yeah, I would have posted something I guess.

Hindsight IS 20/20, and the hypothetical here is just me venting my frustration based on what I know to have been a wack seeding process and group formation. I wanted to see the best possible competition take place, and if anyone who organizes events cares to read this then maybe in the future there will be a lot more deliberation taken in seeding players for a game that is not exactly at the height of its activity.

It's a bit of a one off considering that many players who were thought to be semi or fully retired came back in steamroller fashion to prep for the event, while others openly admitted a less than stellar commitment to the game. Did I expect the ESWC admins to trawl the comments on esr for the latest tidbits about player preparations? No, and I'm not complaining about their job. I think 3 out of 4 players in the semis are the best players playing right now, given the nature of the tourney schedule and setup. A bit of venting is all this is, I guess, but maybe educational for future reference.

Matr0x/Unity/Draven/Vo0 would all have been capable of taking maps/games off of rapha, chance and czm, considering the only map any of the Americans have looked impressive on is hub3aeroq3 (Seriously is this literally all they play?) and they looked average on all the others.

Even if you mixed the groups up a bit (and assuming all the players had turned up, and finished their games) you'd have seen av3k, cypher, fox, jibo, fooki, noctis, arrw, k1llsen in the final standings with the Americans getting third and fourth place spots.

i expected czm to win, just because he is czm... it feels so weird that he isn't even in the semis. :(

Sorry, I like Chance, but he has NO chance against Jibo and I highly doubt he would beat noctis.

Just face it, rapha is not THAT strong on LAN as people said. CZM lacks practice. Chance is not THAT good. Only Z4 played REALLY well.

Cypher does look amazing, I have to say after watching the Av3k games from his real pov demo and not shit-ass gtv he looks like he's taken Q3 to a different level than anyone around right now.

He not only moves insanely fast, but his ability to suddenly stop on a dime and use the low end sens of either his accel or zoom or whatever he does and track someone perfectly.. its unbelievable. Top that with his ability to keep track of the items and his rocket jumping around to get them when he knows he won't be exposed to a shot.. thats craziest part of all. He knows exactly when someone will be in position to shoot him, and exactly when he can rj and strafe jump at crazy speeds while not being in danger of getting shot.

Nobody else seems to have as good of a handle on that positional sense as him.. not even close.

Apart from that pattern, it was fully random. I think they also had a rule 'not more than 2 people from the same country in the same group'.

Anyway, with so much talented player out there, it was really hard to actually balance groups, because there was so many challenger and high seed that were able to make it through.
They simply couldn't make the groups without putting any randomness in the process, would have been biased groups.

what a nice game! cypher vs czm on T4. Match was EXTREMELY tight (players were fragging but tied) until 11:00, the final was very good too, with 2 double ko's, one was a air rocket vs rail, really nice!

I'm surprised to see that both Z4 and CZM plays with FOV 90. I'm no Q3 expert by any means, but I assumed they played with a higher FOV in a fast-paced game like this.

What are the benefits?

If you use a high cg_fov and a low cg_zoomfov with constant zoom, your shaft gets superthin because nothing but the fov itself is affected by zoomfov.

Wich also means that if you have a low fov and high zoomfov, and you have drawgun on, you get a bigass weapon on your screen.

At extreme fov's you can get the shaft beam to disapear for like 80%.

Else GTV was actually watchable and the only negative thing about it was the lack of organisation when it comes to GTV coverage of several matches. For some reason they can't figure out to postpone a match until all current matches are played through. It's irritating that you have to switch GTV and decide what match your prefer the most...

if you jump less far i would say the logical conclusion would be you jump less high ;) it might be that you were tricked due to several pickup sounds haven't been playing on gtv. but they still picked it up.

Man, avek vs cypher was one of the best matches I'v ever seen (at least recently) and fox vs jibo dm13 game was pure genius!

ok, so I'm getting kind of suspicious about those configs.

I think everyone has they're entire actual configs in autoexec.cfg's on thumb drives. There's no way that every freakin player in this thing uses 90fov.

low fov helps me shaft. I wonder if pros are lowering fov for the same reason with lg being whored so much these days.

I'd rather bind a slightly lower sens to my LG than lower my fov overall, but i'm a noob.

Larger fov(especially people that do like fov60 on lg) are actually making it worse off on themselves, harder to track if you make the player bigger thus move faster across your screen :(
