over at shacknews, they say that carmack said that if Quake Live does well, then they would follow up with an idtech 5 Quake Arena. Otherwise, it is not, according to him, "on the boards anymore".

"A new full-featured Quake Arena title will probably not be developed if Quake Live is not successful, according to comments made by id Software's John Carmack today.

"The door is not completely shut for another Quake project, and I'd say probably the success of Quake Live is going to determine whether or not we do another Quake Arena project," said Carmack.

"But right now the publishers aren't all that interested in a multiplayer project on there."

But DOOM has replaced QUAKE atm.

but even if they will make a new arena title, it will take so many years until it's done ... the future is not looking too bright though.

Errr, things like gears of war and Halo/cod 4 sold millions.

UT3 sold shit because it was too demanding on hardware and was nothing special. unlike crysis which sold jack but players still remember it and will go back once they get a new PC, or at least Crytek/EA did a good job so good PR for their next stuff.

still, neither gow, crysis, halo nor cod4 (which has awsome multiplayer) comes close to that we would expect from a new quake arena title while the content of ut3 is almost the same.

Its not going to happen because the majoirty of gamers can't handle a game like quake.

Perhaps if quake live is a success then there will be a market that will SUPPORT that type of game, but as it stands, quake is only really synonomous with old schoolers or just players who thrive on the toughest competition.

Things don't always work out as they should.

All of those games sold primarily for their Single Player. A Quake Arena game would be MP only, and afaik no fast paced MP only game has sold really well since UT2k4. Can't really remember any MP only FPS game on PC that has sold well since UT2k4. IMO the way to go is a making a great SP game with solid MP game out of the box. Great SP will sell loads of copies and some of those buyers will try the MP and like the game which helps bring in a new audience. This is probably what they want to do with the next Doom game.

UT3 with more than 1.2 million copies sold.

By todays standards, 1.2 million units sold is not selling really well when it is across 3 different platforms. I'm assuming you don't mean shipped cause a lot of retailers in norway have like 10-20 copies of UT3 on the shelves selling for 25-50% of original price. For comparison COD 4 has sold more than 10 million, Crysis afaik more than 3 million on 1 platform. Bioshock has shipped 2.2 million over 2 platforms. GTA 4 is supposed to have sold 3.6 million on launch day and shipped a total of 11mill (which of about 8.5 million have been sold).

Launching on 3 platforms is a lot more expensive than just one so you need to sell quite a few more units to recoup the expenses. Considering the cost of making a high profile title such as UT3 on PC, PS3 and 360, I would be surprised if they've made a lot of money on it (they might even have lost money on it).

The player numbers for UT3 seldom tops 1000 and mostly lies around 500-700 players online, which really discourages more MP only FPS games as well.

I wasn't saying it was a great seller compared to what it could have done, but I'm just pointing out that UT3 sold better than Quake 3, Quake 4, ET:QW, and I believe even UT2K4 - and they were on other platforms as well. I don't think it's a problem with demand, but simply a lack of good supply.

Tbh I don't think there is a large demand for fast paced FPS games. Looking at the numbers for UT3 players online on PC it is really low. My guess is a lot of people read the reviews and scores, then went out to get the game which they thought would be great. Then they found out that fast paced FPS gaming was not their cup of tea. Quite a few of my friends play FPS games, but none of them play fast paced FPS games.

Sometimes I wonder if people on ESR live in a bubble where fast paced games are king. It hasn't really been that way for many many years, and the audience is shrinking as time goes by. Most of those that started playing online when fast paced games was all there was has stopped playing and getting a new audience to an MP only game is very very hard unless it's a slow paced one. A stellar SP game is the best way to get sales and hopefully draw some of those players into the MP part of game. Currently QL will most likely be the best hope to attract new players to fast paced FPS games as it will be free to play and still offer a full game.

I'm not saying the demand is as big as WW2 shooters, but I think it's a lot bigger than the numbers you see in the servers. Our players are all spread out (or stuck in WoW right now) over a ton of games - most of which were not built with the genre in mind, and not properly supported by the developers.

Rage will be a fixed 60Hz game and Doom 4 will be 30 Hz (with 3 times the graphical horsepower of Rage) on consoles. On PCs, however, Carmack believes Doom 4 will be able to run at 60Hz if you have state of art hardware (who knows what that could mean by the time the game is released).

As far as I know most games are 30hz, Doom3 engine is 60hz.

A lot of people on this site have always whined about Doom3 Engine being locked at 60 Hz (remember how they forced id to unlock FPS lock in Quake4), and now all these people are OK with Doom 4 being the same again?!

I thought Carmack meant 60 FPS here. I mean, since both tickrate and FPS are equal in Doom 3, I thought this will be also true for Doom 4 engine. Therefor, in Doom 4 we will also get 60 FPS (at max) on our monitors.

The way I understand it is, everything in the engine runs at 60hz (think how sv_fps works), the animation, the whatever else so it's all in sync and smooth (30 is less smooth).

FPS is simply the amount of frames drawn on your screen per second.

No, the D3 engine as used in D3 and Q4 have the client and serverside framerates locked at the same rate - when you set a server to si_fps 125 in q4, everything runs at 125 ticks per second, not just the screen display. So its not a "60Hz game" when set at si_fps 125, because nothing is going at 60hz.

ETQW has unlinked the two to some degree and dropped the server part to 30hz, and allowed clients to pick multiples of 30, although there are some parts which arent @ higher rates, which triggers whine.

I wouldn't claim to know what carmack means when he says 60Hz, he may well be using Hz = fps, as the two are logically the same. I would guess not though, as they wouldn't have learnt from D3.

On a press conference like this, in which a new game is discussed, why would Carmack talk about server tickrate? Specially RAGE which is a single player game, and knowing the fact that probably no console gamer cares about tickrate anyway. (Am I wrong?)
So, I think he means 60 FPS on PC and 30 FPS on console.

This is probably a naive question but - why when they've done Q3's netcode are they taking retrograde steps like that? It's pretty obvious that decoupled as much as possible is best for the online experience.

Part of it is probably as a hang over from the original D3 design - where instead of there being a server + clients, there would not be a server and all clients would calculate the same end state in lock-step, all arriving at the same end point (or something along those lines). They then realised this wasnt going to work, so changed the architecture fairly radically, but were perhaps already committed.

In the D3/Q4 code bases the same code is used for client and server, so trying to change the tickrate for the client and server probably is a bit of a nightmare, because there is no distinction between which rate you want.

7:36: On the next DOOM: "We're hiring new talent, but are not so interested in 'systems people' who want to create new code." The technology is in place, now id wants to focus on design and novel features.

style and art direction has always been the most visually important factor for me in a game. i'm happy they took some concentration off of the graphics.

I guess there will be some cash fueled lans and the competition community will switch, as they switched from osp to cpma, and the play4fun part of the community will stay on q3 (excessive, ra3 etc), splitting once more the quake community -which is actually what's really killing it

Its a shame that the next quake has been dropped in favor of doom. I can understand that publisher arent interested in an arena title, but id could still have made the next quake game 50% sp and 50% mp.

Carmack's statement contradicts itself. Quake Live is meant to offer easy access without all the mods. In essence it is targeted at the casual gamer who does not care and know about mods to begin with. Why would one make it more difficult on oneself and switch to Quake3, which is in my opinion a pain in the ass to navigate and install with all the different mods.

Yeah, it's doable, but what would the casual gamer think of that? I think he wouldn't waste a minute even trying to get in some hardcore community, when he can just log on the site and play Quake Live a little.

If you want more people to flock to Quake3, make it more user-friendly. And by you, I mean the community, since we have seen nothing in terms of updates from ID other than it being open sourced.

I am not a die hard Quake3 fan, but I play it. But I still don't even know what Mod VQ3 is part of, or what the difference between CPM or CPMA or whatever is. Or if VQ3 is a mod itself? Yeah, I guess I am to be blamed for that myself for not reading up on it. But why should I have to, since it could be so much more user-friendly and constructive now that Quake3 is open source?!

As things look, the community won't be able to do much in terms of modifications in Quake Live. And I don't think bitching about that would help nor is it logic when you already have open sourced Quake3 with great mods or rule-sets at hand.

It's actually quite a worrying statement, the way I see it id are just shrugging off having to do all the work they should be doing to make it as good as Q3+CPMA.
