All the 5 americans in WB right now have played QL pretty much after eswc masters, whereas fox and me went to gamegune so didn't really play any QL but 1 day (this tuesday when we got home from gamegune we played FFA cause 1v1 servers were down :p) and cypher who hasn't been playing quake at all..
So yeah, if a euro wins this tourney, i'm gonna shit my pants.

While writing this comment, Cypher is already in the final and is in fact the favourite of the whole QuakeCon 2008 Quake Live tournament with virtually no practice at all when compared to the other players attending.

Do some fucking reading before complaining about stuff you know nothing about.

The QuakeCon organization didn't deliver the high-speed internet access they promised to various websites or any internet connectivity at all to the conference room. As a result QuakeUnity, TGN and ET.TV all had to halt their plans of having online streaming video. All of them are taping stuff and will be putting videos online as soon as they get a hand of real broadband internet access and some time to encode it, so instead of sitting on your couch complaining to the internet about how you don't have any more doritos to eat and how it's QuakeUnity's fault, think about how those hard-working people who wanted to deliver content for you for free got fucked in the ass instead, and how frustrated they are feeling right now after planning this stuff in advance but being denied at the last minute. Also contemplate the option of going around for a walk outdoors because they should have the videos for your download in a day or so.

and from what i know, the reason they didn't get the keynote address up was because they were let in 10 minutes before it started and they didn't get to test their equipment, not because there was a lack of internet, or atleast that's what has been said.

but i don't give a shit about the conference room. afaik there's no way in hell that i would have known that they were lacking the bandwidth to upload the videos. please show me exactly where it says that.

i'm not at the event, nor do i know anyone at the event, nor do i know what the hell is going on at the event, nor do i want to troll around this site for an answer. so if you're getting sick of people complaining, i'd suggest you get the fuck off this site and take a walk.

True. Quakecon always under-deliver. The problem is when some kid start complaining about it putting the blame on the very people that was let down by Quakecon organizers, as if it was their fault instead. People talking about as if QuakeUnity is to blame need to STFU. If they did some checking they'd see QuakeUnity (and others) were fucked up by stuff beyond their control.

It's no less professional for Quakecon to have let them down than it is for quakeunity to not make sure everything is in place beforehand, and tell everyone it will be there. They're both to blame, but at least Quakeunity could have made the knowledge where the origin of the problem was more public.

The CTF team lists are laughably wrong...

Billymaysdaze: Cl0ck, Viju, 2, Zero4. Rapha and Nikon are 5th and 6th backup players, in the event that Zero4/Rapha have 1v1 games that conflict. Cl0ck and Viju are offense, 2 is high d, Zero4 flag. In the event things get tough, which they won't, Viju will switch to defense. The 4 best CTFers at Qcon, all on the same team. Biggest liability: Cl0ck being rusty.

Innittheforthe$: Palarity, Fox, Pyro, Blt. Blt flag, Fox high d, Palarity and Pyro on offense. All four are decent CTFers, but have never played together before. However, even if they had, they'd still be fighting for 2nd.

Rage: Whitename, Shizem, Icelore, Kgb. Whitename flag, Shizem offense, Icelore and Kgb are going to be high d and offense, but really they will both just play mid. Shizem will miss crouch sliding. Decent team, 2-3 60% railers and a good flag runner.

Billymaysdaze (Cloud9 + two experienced CTFers) will win. The other two teams will have a close fight for 2nd. Initforthe$ knocked Rage into the lower bracket, Billymaysdaze will do the same to Initforthe$.

I am not sure. I got those through irc, from teammates. I think that Magnum_'s team also likely has Dradik, Blackstallion and Penguin but that's just an educated guess based on them being on the same CTF team in the beta.

You should put your effort into t4. It's a great map and you'd be really good on it if you'd like it. Usually there are players doing great on small/medium maps with lot of action (t4 and aeroq) and players doing good on big maps (like dm6).
No offense, from what I've seen from your matches, you are more in the first category.

for those of you still wondering about ctf...

*SPOILERS*

billy something or another with viju, clock, and zero4 went up against icelore's team (rage) with kgb and shizem etc. for the final.

the final was amazingly close between both teams but in the end the rage team lost. first map was VERY intense with it coming down to the very last few seconds. Second map was also pretty good but the Billy team or whatever their name was eventually got the lead by quite a few flags. Rage could have had a comeback but in the end they lost 0-2.

fox's team also got third.

dont know what they are doing about vod's and such, but yeah the coverage wasn't really the best.

What's worse is that this was a good opportunity for id for showing the game to the public and letting people be amazed by the skills of the top players.

A good stream, schedules and newsticker on ql.com would have given them lots of publicity, but sometimes it's like they don't want to promote their games.

So I watched Map2/3 of RAGE vs II4T$ and quite frankly I got the distinct impression that CTF is a complete failure of a game type at the moment (Further reinforcing the opinion I already have from OSP CTF).

The maps are just shockingly bad and are never going to work, no amount of butchering and editing will save them. In fact I'm going to go as far as saying the DM scenes entire concept of how to make CTF maps is fundamentally flawed.

First of all, bouncepads. In 90% of cases all bouncepads on CTF maps serve to do is to make the attacker a free, easy target to score loads of damage on. This is obviously very bad as it makes the job of an attacker far harder as they are basically working on a budget of <75 health and <20 armour (If they were lucky enough to get a YA/RA in the first place).

These bouncepads are everywhere, the midfields are covered in them, the flag rooms are covered in them and the bases are covered in them. I think I saw two staircases (Map3 in the base, they mirror each other so I'm not sure it counts as "two" as such) and zero teleporters.

Secondly, the railgun. This weapon is totally unacceptable in CTF the way it is currently incorporated into maps. The way maps are working at the moment between leaving your base and entering the opponents base you're likely to take a rail, you'll take another when you enter the flag room or if you're lucky you'll take one on the way out.

Proximity Mines are bad, nothing like trying to capture a flag when you have to go through entrances blocked by prox mines taking yet more damage and in no way down to skill. Just get rid of it, it's annoying, skilless and just not fun.

Being able to pump out lots of small damage off of spawn with the machinegun again makes it problematic to capture the flag as you without fail end up meeting a spawner on the way in/out and no matter if your able to kill them they can always do a good deal of damage. If the spawn weapon was something you could dodge or required a super accurate one hit before a reload it wouldn't be a problem. This is the only non-map specific problem.

Yeah, brand new maps are essential if QL wants any type of success in CTF. The tweaked base Q3 and Team Arena maps have no place in modern CTF.

Quite simply, id Software needs to contract mappers who have proven experience creating excellent CTF maps (read: Threewave). It seems very unlikely that the small team working on QL would be able to churn out a decent number of quality CTF maps, since the only truly new map we've seen so far is the duel/FFA map Furious Heights.

To be honest I don't think that vq3 movement doesn't work in ctf the way the maps are currently. The movement does not gel, and it's basically impossible for the flag runner to get out of the base unless he and his escort kill the defenders 10 times and they're out of position in the first place.

This is where I think cpm has a distinct advantage. The cpm movement is a skill that allows skilled frag runners to cap against good defenders without having to have superior aim/ a bit of luck. That's not to say it's all deflag, but I think it's just a superior form of ctf. 1v1 and tdm on the other hand....

uhmmm .....

QL is a q3 port with weapon balance tweaks and netcode improvement, that's about it, EVERY map except a few are all old baseq3 and team arena maps.

watched the ctf4 game vod from quakeunity, mpfff.. this map could be cool but why the hell would you make a so big flag room with only jumppads pathes to access the flag ; impossible to capture, boring game

these vods are great in high quality, the shoutcast is cool too (no "he do this then he do this and then he do this" kind of crap some shoutcasters do)

kamikaze is a nuke... you pick it up like quad and when you activate it it explodes you + makes a giant and i mean GIANT explosion, can take out a whole team if used right..i think its fun but most people hate it cuz they are stuck in vq3 ctf which sucked dick anyway....

I guess this map has been created and balanced for this new item, hence why the flag rooms are so big (not beeing able to nuke the entire room) and ruining the gameplay
dunno if this power up is well set -seems not if everybody is complaining- but the idea of a suicide item is cool, could bring a bit more of tactic to the game

Imho it shouldn't be ONLY the job of quake fans to ensure the entire coverage of big events such like that.
Each event should also ensure to cover their own tournament and not only looking for esport website coverage to do the job.

I expect that Qcon staff are paid, isn't it ? And what about all the sponsors ? Why can't they provide all the technical stuff needed to broadcast in high quality definition (in live or on demand) the different games !?

Wake up guys, I definitely feel to be (back) in 2001 and not to be in 2008.

Pro-gaming will never grown up with weak broadcasting.

It is also a shame that QL didn't learn about the reason why q4 has sucked (no GTVs and/or weak system for demo record...).

No, none of the QuakeCon staff is paid. The event is ran by them entirely under a volunteer system.

What company wouldn't like to run a yearly showcasing of their sponsors and new products to promote itself? And what employee wouldn't wanna be part of it, even without payment?

Not like it's hard to organize the coverage. There are plenty of sites and volunteers out there to do it FREE OF CHARGE just so they can provide the latest coverage on a particular tournament to the community. From what I heard is, all that these people needed were some time to prepare and a broadband connection. And they got neither.

QuakeCon / id sure isn't obligated to provide for coverage, but it would've been a nice token of appreciation for supporting their games for 10 years or something?

You (id) really should consider to employ a professional staff next time. If Quakecon is supposed to be a promotional event, I think you can really afford to spend a few bucks to hire professionals.
Quakecon 2008 didnt seem like good promotion to me.
I'm not sure how Blizzard handles it, but last Blizzcon was 1000x more successful as a promotional even and also as esport event then this years Quakecon.
