these games were mainly "kickass" because id created something new that's not been there before, from both the gameplay and technical side of PC gaming.

I dont think it's about what the publishers want to see, but about if you can make any money with a project like that - which company would like to spend months of development for a game that noone actually plays? well ok, maybe id already did exactly that, let's just wait and see how QL will do :p

The next Quake was/is supposed to be a Arena/MP-Only game. I can totally understand IDs reaction to release Quakelive as a testdummy to see if people are still interested in compeditive PC-FPS.

About the site structure...a little thing I noticed and it keeps bugging me a little: Sometimes topics get ripped apart into all those different headlines and sub-articles, which could be merged or summarized under super-article. There already is a Quakecon front page article, and the fact that QL debuts or that Carmack made his speech are not that different from each other. Now we have 3 front page articles, and it is not clear why they were created from scratch.

Wouldn't it be feasible to somehow join articles by different authors together so previously made comments in a different (but "parallel" article) can also be easily displayed?

The dumbest thing I've ever read. Plain and simple. id is FAIL.

They should've spent the time and energy developing the new Arena game instead of pandering with a remake of a game that's pushing 10 years old. This is just another example of how id has given up on gaming.

yeah because all of the arena-style games that got released in the past 6 months were the top-sellers and we've UT3 tournaments all around!

get real plz, id is a business trying to make profit... no by-gamers-for-gamers team jerking off on the 15 people that actually play their game online.

You're completely right, it is a very troubling time in gaming and it's better not to take any chances investing in something different that could possibly fail...like a remake of a first-person shooter based out of a web browser. How is that not a major risk?

Also, you're right. They are a business. A business that caters to gamers that want to play quality games. If I can't have "FOR GAMERS BY GAMERS", I'll settle with "FOR GAMERS BY SANE DEVELOPERS WHO KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING".

I dont see QL as such a big risk because there's simply no publisher sitting behind, and id probably considered that it might fail on their own costs. plus as a freeware game, there's just nothing like "expected sales".

ofc I get your points and I totally agree as a quake player. but from a business POV it's just plain stupid to develop any games with guys like us in mind, because we are the tiny minority of possible customers.
besides that, look at the number of quakers playing online at any given time. I think QL is a great opportunity to see how many people are even interested in quake anymore. and maybe, just maybe it's gonna be a success and we'll see Quake Arena 2 with matchmaking out of the box.... keeping those fingers crossed

the number of players playing a 10 years old game now at any given time don't say that much, if this new game would be good a lot of people would play it, because gameplay combined with the taste of new; it does say smth if you compare it to cs servers, but do ID expect so many players ?

i dont think argueing with ut3 is a good choice. you handle ut3 as it would be released as the perfect game OR received alot of patchlove. no offense, but did u play ut3 for a couple of times?;)

talk about lacking/ minimum linux support, mac support, not very useful demorecording, no utv .. still tons of bugs and so on. still, after 2 large (!) patches the game is not what it should be. take a look at the upcoming third patch .. *sigh* .. so why should it be used for tournaments? :P

I think the Doom 4 multiplayer will be a lot more successful than Quake Live. A lot of people who buy Doom 4 will probably have a few games online, while very few people even know about Quake Live and most who know don’t care.

Splitting the single-player and multiplayer modes into different games was a really bad idea to begin with. When they were combined the hype surrounding the game lead to a lot more people playing the multiplayer mode and the multiplayer mode gave the game extra life which gave people more reason to buy the game. Games like COD4 and Halo 3 which have strong single player and multiplayer modes (in the public’s view, not mine) have done a lot better than games which are single player or multiplayer only.

Quake Live is already dead and we’ll just have to wait for seVerity or Doom 4. Personally I'm rooting for seVerity since id seem to have lost the plot when it comes to both single player and multiplayer game, with Doom 3 and Quake Live both being total disasters.

quakecon coverage was always poor in the last years. i think this will never change.
a working live stream from some games is the highest of our feelings we can get. and now it seems two sites will do this :)

The US version is illegal (games are not considered art ;), the German version had, like you said, different symbols, got a 16+ rating, but was banned anyway (things worked different back then).

It's already well into Day 2 of QuakeCon, and not even ONE fucking in-game screenshot has been posted on the Internet. Hell, not even 1 low-res photo of a monitor that's playing QL.

It was only meant to be "unveiled" to attendees.
There were in fact "masses" of BYOC attendees. And QuakeLive got more play than all the other games combined among the byoc'ers (all few thousand of us).

So why can't id just release their new content through steam, then they don't have to worry about what their publisher wants?

Or if quake live is a huge success, then they could release their upcoming titles in a similar manner, maybe with the option of ads (which would probably fit quite nicely into rage), or for a fixed fee a la steam.

Also, are there other methods of attaining a quake live beta key other than signing up on www.quakelive.com ? Can people who currently have keys "give" other people a set number of keys, how does it work? I want one!

So looking at the brackets, maybe a Cypher ZeRo4 Final?

The mass/mainstream? who aren't exactly that caring for id games.

I don't use Linux, I've never used Linux but for me it doesn't reflect well on where id are heading, especially given their cold treatment of the competitive community and the hardcore id fans.

I was referring to Linux-users -- a group of gamers I can guess is very small. Most people who buy id games use Windows.
