Event: QCON'08

Before this years QuakeCon faded away in our memories, here are a few videos from the event.

Enemy Territory.TV overs us the Carmack Keynote and Press Conference plus the Fatal1ty interview.

Now see what QuakeUnity deliver us, note that from time to time some new videos arrives. The shoutcast of the videos is provided by Michal "Carmac" Blicharz, Rod "Slasher" Breslau, Brian "destrukt" Flander and Stuart "Django" Ewen.

You're just a whiny kid that wants the past back because times were different then. EVERY game has people like this, including mmorpgs(the game was better when it had less content in it!!!11)

The game evolved since your ideal time, so you just bitch instead of wanting to get it fixed. I still want to play quakelive but fact is that cq3 has had every change it has right now for a much longer time plus if people used it would probably get changers quicker than quakelive will ever be. On top of that QL is going to be fail for local lans because id thinks they can be nazi server dictators, which will probably just kill the game.

Complaining is the best way to lose lifetime. If you dont like it, then just go back to osp, or find yourself another cpma mod. There are plenty of other games too, other things to do besides playing on your pc.
As for me, I enjoy playing vq3 and watching the demos as much as I did in the past at osp. Also Im grateful that Arqon saved a dying game.

I was THERE watching him play as well. He was using the IE 3.0. Although one thing I did notice is that every once in a while his cursor on screen seemed like it was skipping pixels, and my 3.0 does this as well and then it goes away. Kind of strange but I do think it has something to do with the 3.0 @ stock usb speeds.

it actualy wasn't that bad tbh.
It's just that you try to shoutcast a bit like 2gd with somewhat more of an indepth knowledge of the game which you try to explain. But it's realy hard for a not high level player to even understand this, and to explain it while it happens is even hard for most high level players. And that's where mistakes are born ;)
So I thought it was a good effort of you so your mistakes are forgiven ;)

Despite the good efforts from carmac at the art of commentating matches, django appeared and saved him from the big bang lol good job carmac, either way you've tried your best...no one had the balls to try such a thing without any experience or talent in their blood...but is that possible that we'll see a shoutcaster carmac anytime soon ? ;D

Free stuff is always good even if that is all released till the end of the world, stop complaining - people are at hard work just for giving you all that...they're making you a favor, learn to respect !

Carmac was better than Django and Slasher.

He was making mistakes and at times couldn't quite keep up but he at least tried to be more descriptive of the events going on rather than just "Nice Rail", "Nice Rocket" or "He picked up the RA".

I didn't think he was bad at all - mistakes happen (even for experienced commentators in all sports). The key thing is to be able to learn from them / carry on regardless.

How people still can play CS? Well if I am correct it is the biggest FPS game. It got Like ziljon times more money in it. And another thing, its covered.

Then you can argue how good the game is and so on. But that is a personal oppinion wich leads to nowhere.

I prefer Q3(CPM) but I dont see the point in bashing at CS.

CQ3 sucks. I know its basically everything the same as QL, except the movement in CPMA is horrible. Quakelive actually listened they have OSP type movement - the floaty feeling - but it NEVER lags when you click jump - so its always like cpma consistent strafing. They also have REALLY nice rocket jumping, its precision as hell. Just feels so light and amazing to strafe around in QL.

And rocket launcher is 1000x better. Faster/more splash damage and just makes quakelive so much more fun.

to me quake live looks good... and they reduced the dmg on rail right? only lg left and then and then game will be great imho...
sure there is alot of thigs that need to be fixed but as long as the weapon balance isnt just about lg then ql will be more fun then cpma any day of the week...

It's not nerfed, its decreased LG damage, and no cripple, but LG accuracy is still 40% for good players and higher if you aim good. So its still strong as fuck but we can counter it cuz no cripple + nice RL.

MG got nerfed , but thats a good thing.

The accuracy is the same or a tad lower, but xerp in cpma is bullshit because of cripple - once someone gets shafted its over, hardly anything to do to combat it. And the damage is much too high. Quakelive fixes this, and takes away needing to bind xerpclients to lightning gun, and using that gay ass model - since its very distracting on your eyes. I also hated that to play cpma you HAD to use xerp versus other highlvl players else you would get shaft ruined everytime, and xerp is ugly/hurts my eyes when i use it. so your gripe is with the weapon values of the LG... this is not cpma's fault, its vq3's fault. cpma added cq3 which although isnt perfect started the ball rolling on improving vq3 to todays connection/tech/skill but no-one seems to want to play it. QL comes along and basically has the same weapon values as cq3 and everyone wants to play and praise that O_o

Negative. Quakelive has MOVEMENT/smoothness back. This ties everything together, once again. OSP strafe height and cpma consistant strafing + very good rocketjumping (it feels lagless and precise)

beside that annoying blabling crap there are some interesting analysis/reflections. this is what I want to hear when I listen to shoutcasters

not really, the shoutcast was done for quakeunity's vods, they said something like that in one of the first vods
anyway this apply to any shoutcast, it's not especially aimed to the qcon one
some shoutcasters are great, use their brain and talk about interesting stuff
some shoutcasters are crap, always describing the action cause they dunno shit about what's going on in the game they are shoutcasting, and should be shot

also sometimes players are playing hide and seek and sound is a key element and I don't really wanna hear a shoutcaster in these moments but hear too what the player is hearing

btw I think I've heard something like : UK provided 2 streaming of football (soccer) matches : one with shoutcasting (yes, the dumb one : "he pass to x, y got the ball, nice saving by z, etc"), and one without ; the one without was a huge success
I guess even in established sport a large amount of people are sick of these radio-like shoutcasting ; media just didn't let the choice before

Suppose it's difficult to cater for everyone. And gaming is still trying to reach out to new audiences and get sponsors (and then have to mention those sponsors). Though it can be difficult enough to get one stream up and running :)

Have to say I like shoutcasting / commentary because it allows me to do other stuff / not have to focus on screen ALL the time to know whats going on.

Even when listening to the match live without video, I much preferred the analysis and conversation. Simply saying who hits who with what, and how much health and armor people have over and over actually doesn't do a very good job of painting a picture of what's happening. The action is typically too fast, back and forth, with health/armor changing for it to really be of much use.

Of course you still need to punctuate the action with play-by-play, but that only means drawing attention to certain events that are particularly noteworthy (coupled with some explanation as to why they are noteworthy.) Anything more than that and you're basically just a slower, less accurate version of an IRC scorebot.

the imagequality is worse than any CPL painkiller stream! if that's the way id wanted to show "QL's first debut to the masses" it has to be a joke... people who are not in the beta won't recognize shit in the t7 VODs... they probably even won't on dm6.

i really enjoyed the vods - that's what events need + some kind of gtv support. makes it feel much more professional. also, ALL the shout casters did a fantastic job...especially carmac, i had no idea he could give such effortless commentary, well done man. i wonder how many languages he speaks.

On the other hand it must be cool to get a note that 200 ppl or so are watching your game right now.

@id: PLEASE PROVIDE country flag support by IP. There are serveral companies out there who can give you exact location informations depending on an ip. So an accurate level of country<->player could be achived.
