Agree. I hope they do it the same way with RAGE. D3 was a good game to play.

rage didn't get a good multiplayer, maybe cause there is stil etqw thats really similar to how open spaces in rage combine with fast combat. doom should have better gra[\hics so that might warrant a good multiplayer part.

im not sure but my prediction is 3 etqw servers with a few people are left. the rest servers are empty. the big patch 1.5 came to late.

splash damage is now out of the shadow of id. they do their thing with their own founded publisher. dirty bomb f2p on pc will be the next game. i guess it will have a huge cod influence.

maybe it had to do with the long dev time of rage. i know it sounds strange with a 7 year development but i think they hadnt not enough time at the end for a long and deep multiplayer and the main focus was console gaming (driving multiplayer, few coop maps). willits wanted the console market so hard, showing all the time his xbox controller. from a selling point thats okay, the game market has changed since 2006.

so now id could be time wise under pressure. and the first thing to skip is the multiplayer.

from what i read, the released id tech 5 editor is hard to handle. maybe there will be not many custom mods and fan maps for doom 4. so a shipped d4 multiplayer and coop is more important than in the past.

doom 3 was made with 22 people back then (from the book The Making of Doom 3). carmack gave up the small team idea after doom 3.

my opinion about d3 mp. the doom community wanted primarly coop, it was released with 2 fan mods. d3 deathmatch multiplayer wasnt popular, i dont say it was bad but a good mp looks different for me. per pixel detection, players didnt like the engine for mp (same goes for quake4), tight rooms so you crashed against the wall while jumping, strafe jumping was not wide etc.

it will be interesting what id will do with d4 or quake5 multiplayer. will it be cod influenced? will it be a mix of oldschool/newschool elements and how to balanced such a mix? i gave it thought a few times but to be honest i failed. it will be the hardest challenge there is. im really really ecxited about the output.

i wrote the pieces down from the book, its my count. because like you, i couldnt believe it at first.

7 artists, 2 animators, 5 leveldesigner, 5 programmers, 1 sound designer (plus 1 temp with a sound library). and management.

Tim Willits was lead designer and after d3 release was made id owner. chief programmer was Robert Duffy who built the editor (ingame console type 'editor'). Soundmann Christian Antkow (leveldesigner for quake 2, commentator voice in quake 3) mixed sounds together. some funny storys. like they bought 2 chainsaws, gas and electronic, but the electric sounded like a vaccum cleaner so they took the sound from the gas machine instead. and the shotgun sound was mixed with a "Howitzer Shore Defense Cannon" wtf :D to have a fatter sound. i like Antkow's work, the rage dlc is impressive (the sound in the cave, steps on moos in one room). john carmack gave his big room up for the leveldesigner so they could come all together. first id game in c++. first doom contained 54.000 sentences of source code, doom 3 with 785.000 sentences.

Awesome! But, now, i know who to blame for the plasmagun and the bfg 's sounds.... Those were litterally horrible, q3's respective sounds are better!
Still a wonderful game, and cosnidering it wasn't an indie or a conceptual game, it is really amazing....
Nowaday it would be impossible, to make a top graphic game with such a small team.
Now that you make me think about it, it's true, the shotgun makes the sound of an high caliber cannon :-)
