hello all, i have been having a very weird stuttering problem in all games.
my system specs,

windows xp media center pro
asus p5bwla
c2d e6300
radeon hd 2600 xt
2 gb ddr2800
250 gb sata hd
700 watt ocz power supply

this should be enough to run quake 3 and gold src based games flawlessly.

The problem i am getting is a input lag of some sort. when i use my keyboard to strafe around or walk its smooth but when i use my mouse to look around it feels like im turning the mouse on saw teeth. it happens every 5 minutes into the game then i would vid_restart a few times untill it gets solved sometimes it doesnt not get fixed and i am forced to restart q3, very annoying in matches...
i play with 125 fps it never drops but still gives me the lag once in a while.

I have tried reformatting, installing old drivers, omega drivers,diffrence mice using ie 3.0, tried death adder,mx518,a4tech x750bf the problem occurs on all mice.

ive tried Aarons smp fix, it helps a little gets me more time to play my game maybe 7 minutes then it hits me again.

The monitor may be a culprit, it is a syncmaster 740bf tft lcd which claims to have 2ms response time.

It happens in ALL games...

v-sync off?
tried changing the prerenderlimit ("flip queue size") by using ATI Tray Tools? or other techniques based on pre rendering buffers

there's also a mouselag bug in the opengl driver since Catalyst 7.11 (or so i read three months ago). Try Catalyst 7.10

edit: is it after the exact same time (5 minutes?) each time?
you could also detach all non-essential parts for testing, so only keep psu, motherboard, cpu, cooler, ram, videocard, monitor, harddrive, keyboard and mouse. You could also check some BIOS settings. Maybe try a P/S2 mouse? (or same mouse with usb-->P/S2 converter)

I once had a problem of freezes because of a conflict with a scanner ^^

vsync is off, flip queue is 0,
removing everything non-esential did not changeanything

according to the guy in that thread "0" doesnt nesseceraly mean its off, try different settings

try catalyst 7.10 or earlier and P/S2 converter (just for testing)

is it after the exact same time (5 minutes?) each time?

I had small stutters just as you describe them caused by a bluetooth usb dongle for whatever reason.

put this on a (rewritable) CD or USB stick and let it run for a night

i found the source. My internet.
Whenever i am not connected to the internet i can go hours wih playing without any stutter or lag, when connected to the internet maybe 5-6 minutes.
A long time ago this pc had a pci fax/ethernet card on it. ever since i took it out since there already is ethernet integrated into the mobo , i cant remove the drivers for this card from control pannel

Ping Plotter is a great program to do extended internet performance testing (24hrs+). Can show times of day your isp is under-performing.

by format i mean system restore,
this hard disk as was the motherboard are from a HP computer. The hard disk has system backup with fresh copy of windows media center pro and all the drivers the HP came with. I was able to pick out all the HP bullcrap except the network card drivers.

edit: deleting registry values got rid of the drivers which said were there but actually werent.
No fix with performance though.

I have exactly the same problem, i thought i am the only one... Its very annoying and i cant do anything with it (mice changing, windows reinstalling, all possible software fixes and drivers mixes… - nothing helps only when I remove ethernet cable. I am 100sure that network-card is ok – cos this shit happens on both of my pcs. crns do u use adsl???

have you tried altering the netspeed ingame? maybe your upload bandwidth is too low

you can also try updating the firmware of your modem/router and possibly check cabling (the shorter your telephone line the better) and line sharing. Issues with splitters are very common.

I tried even several different routers – doesn’t do anything… I also know that i don’t have any viruses. I now start to think that when I am connected to the internet my router start “disturbing” my cpu and its causing mouse lag though the fps in q3 is constantly 125. I tried to turn off hdcp – and this improved my mouse sensitivity. Any thoughts what else can I try?
Crns if your router is in dhcp mode – try turning it off and test your sensitivity.

anyways, its not related to your pc since it works well offline, right?
must be some sort of synchronization method between your ingame world and what happens on server?

try a different net speed ingame!

also test it on LAN game (let your other pc run server)
that way you can rule out any network related parts of the game / other software and network in home that wont be used when in offline mode

Eh I found out that this doesn�t help. Just at first my sensitivity was ok not for few minutes but for about 1 hour but now everything is like it was before. I have quite bad parameters of my telephone line � mb this is the reason for sensitivity lag (what is your's) or mb the attacks on router:D This is the weirdest hardware problem i have ever got.

well i found out how to disable dhcp that just fucked my connection and couldnt connect took an hour trying to figure it out afterwards :)
my sensitivity is 3.3 with 400 dpi and m_accel 0.05
my adsl line is 1024/256 teh crap :) there is no cable around here waiting for something better to be released in the meanwhile i tried reseating everything in my case, which didnt do anything.

i just tested this again and its not about internet it happened a few times again with lan games while not connected to the interwebs.
the problem seems to go away when i change fps (75-125) i bound it to my mousewheel its a quick fix, but it doesnt work on pure servers.

I have found the solution to my problem. I think that u have something else – i was having something like input lag – my mouse feel was totally different when connected to internet and i couldnt play normally. So the solution for me is changing the MTU setting in my router i don’t know why it helped and why this effects sensitivity in quake 3 but it do(interesting to here some thoughts about this – my pc knowledge is low) . I configured it to a rather small value (576 it was 1500) – i think i will test more with bigger values.

wow... that is really weird... 1500 is the standard internet setting
afaik i know it defines the packet size.... maybe cause you use smaller packages, it requires a faster "frequency" to communicate and therefor keeps your connection more stable? (really guessing here... i know shit about network stuff)

Interesting I have the same thing. On Vista 64bit I had some weird lag moments in q3. It's like punkbuster was quering the server, eventhough it was disabled.

This drove me nuts so I switched back to 32-bit XP Pro (now with SP3). Back in XP Pro my Fatal1ty 1010 started acting up again with logically buttons hanging or just stop responding out of nothing (which it didnt in vista...hmm?!). So I hooked up my old mouse which I think is an mx510 or 518. This old mouse has the 'saw teeth' effect described by the original poster every 5-7 minutes. This lasts for 2-3 minutes then it's back to normal again.

What I can say for me is that it's something with the mouse. If I use my normal Fatal1ty 1010 I never get the lag issues (just the missed clicks or hanging buttons). Another thing is that it only happens with q3. That being q3.cpma or the challengeq3 client. In Team Fortress 2 I have no issues at all.

Let's see where this discussion will lead us to.

that button hanging is because of 1000Hz USB polling rate - and only the original id software quake3.exe has this problem - challengeq3 doesn't.
just use cnq3 instead of ids exe

wow jebus christ, i never thought id be writing this post.

the cure for it all for me was to use the nosmp.exe (thanks arqon) + flip queue size to + 3, at 5 its silky smooth with no stutters, at 3 it has very little at 4 nearly not noticeable. When i remove either one of these the stuttering is back, only using nosmp does not cure it. using them both makes it go away. I advise people with newer ati cards and core 2 duo cpu's to try this.
set catalyst AI-off
all optimizations off
triple buffering,
fqs-5
highest refresh rate + smp fix

i have a stuttering problem in all games as well, but only if I play online. (even on games like starcraft -> 1998 lol )

i guess its because of the OS or the graphiccard, i got ati 3850
i'll format my pc and install xp instead of my current os (vista ult. 32bit.)

could well be a difference in driver indeed, or something to do with Aero (which uses D3D).
