There is still a waste which relates to the amount of watt it can supply. If he uses a 1k watt unit, and it only needs 300watt, the it will be less efficient than a 350 watt unit.

The article doesnt focus exclusively on it, but there was an articel on perhaps xbitlabs, about the performance between a 1000watt psu and a 3-500 watt psu, in a system where the requirements weren't more than a few hundred watt. The conlusion was that if they were far from 50-75% load they didnt perform as good.

This supports mine though. I don't mind hardware arguments though, it's one of my strongest subjects. It's a well funded hobby of mine that I take alot of interest in. I do appreciate your enthusiasm, even if it is misinformed more often than not.

ATX specification states that the power supply must have an efficiency of 65% at a load of 20%.
On the other hand switching power supplies have a non-linear efficiency curve, I think to get 80plus certification it has to have 80% efficiency at 20% load and it drops very quickly below that.

Since we are talking percentages here let's do some math to demonstrate where his claim is probably coming from:

a) Let's say your components use 100 watt idle on the 16amp rail (simplified, but for the sake of the argument). You are using a 300 watt switching power supply.
-> You are at a load of 33% percent. If 80plus certified you are now at an efficiency of a bit over 80%.

100watt / 0.8 = 125 Watts your are pulling from your evil power supplier.

b) 100 watt idle but 1000 watt power supply.
-> Load of 10%. Your efficiency is now alot lower, let's use the graph from up there: 73%.

100watt / 0.73 = 136 watts youre are pulling from your supplier. That is about 10% more and of course this number gets even higher with lower idle percentage values (something quite common, my HTPC uses about 40watts idle when the harddrive is spun down).

I understand that, I'm not saying that over-all higher is better by any means. I'm using a 610 watt PC Power and Cooling PSU and using every bit of it.

I think the CPU is just over 200, which is fine and not a bad deal.

The problem is the DDR 3 RAM and the X58 MOTHERBAORD make it an unsavoury investment. at the moment as you're looking at £320 ish JUST for a mobo and 3 gig of ram that would buy a complete q6600 PC and a HD4850 if bought a second hand GPU. I just can't quite get my head around that atm.

That should come down to just over 200 pound in the next 3-4 months. so sell your shit now, bank the money and then upgrade.

I know you can measure it accurately by finding out how much you pay per watt or whatever, but I don't know that neither do I have one of those devices that measure drawn current.

But rough sort of estimates for a mid range gaming pc and tft?
Can be country specific whatever, I'm real curious.

A lot of places have done just general tests. The 'average' rig, if you were to leave it on 24/7 for a year, would cost you $100-$120 a year extra for your power bill.

I mean, that's only $10 a month, and I'm sure if you're THAT strapped for cash, just put it in sleep mode.

I dual boot Vista ultimate 64 and xp pro 32. I can side by side compare them in any way you'd like.

Some obvious advantages of Vista, though. I had a friend with Vista as his primary OS. He changed motherboards, and didn't have to reformat. It was a different model of motherboard entirely (680 Asus Striker Extreme to an evga 780i)
