It wasn't the same players playing all 60mins. They switched seats every 10mins or so but all players were equally crap.
Any half-decent players could have stopped fat's record attempt. In theory the other FFAers could stop FFAing, work together and go strait for Fat. But they didn't do that.
Or just jump in void or delay respawns or other methods to prevent Fat getting any frags. But they didn't do that. They were easyfrags as required.

i don't understand why people call him a tool, no one else could pull this off or provide the insight of how to make top quality gaming hardware. i recently bought a fatal1ty 700w power supply, x-fi sound card, headphones, mouse pad, mouse and keyboard, and immediately i began winning more games, after a couple of days i'm beating players at the very top.

It's true that pointless PR stunts like this dm17 "world record" and the shootouts you mention might hurt his reputation in the small hardcore crowd. But that's not his target demographic. No sane esr user would buy a mouse or motherboard just because it has a Fatality sticker.

What major LAN tournaments were there at that point? CPL Was one of the first organizers for major tournaments afaik, and whey werent even born at the time.

The problem is everyone in the know knows fat is a good player but he's not so good that he should keep going on about world titles. Quake 3, fair enough fat owned at the start, but again where was he when people started catching him up and taking games off him? Quake 3 was prime time when he gave up. Why give up a game and substitute it for lesser games, especially as he's said q3 is his favourite.

He did well to win the finals, but he still lost more games to vo0 throughout the year. Nerves lost vo0 the game. Yeah its all part of the game, but you know when you see people like Usain bolt run the 100 meter you get the distinct feeling you are seeing something that is a true chamption.

You just never got that with Fat apart from the start of q3. He's a great player and I respect what he's done, but I would take Coollers, Czm, zero 4 and many other players rep over his any day of the week and I don't think they have even talked about a world title. I don't really think he's done anything else in any other game which is worth that much.

There was talk about Doom 3 being used as the world tour game and I know it went to PK in the end, but I'm not sure if it was announced at that time. If it was, it would have been damn close to the event.

Whichever way you look at it, Fat saying he's a world champ at a game with the intial circumstances surrounding it, not entering the first proper tourney and then getting beat by 25 frags by the widely regarded number one Doom 3 player (several months after the CPL tourney) is just shocking for someone who claims to be a world champion.

He took more of a business approach to it then a true competitive approach to it. Instead of sticking with one game, he saw the niche markets, the smaller communities, the similar game types, and the weaker competition. I agree, he should of competed in Q3, but if you know you have a very good chance at winning at a game, you take it. I'm sure he knew he wouldn't of won Q3 back then, so went to Doom3. Smaller community, less players, less skill (Except Daler!), etc.

It would have been interesting to see him play top UT euros like Lauke and Falcon and Devilmc and Winz back when UT2004 was around. Instead, he won a CPL in UT2003 that was full of relatively inept Americans and pit him against a relatively second-rate player at the finals.

The 2006 WSVG finals were also pretty pathetic, considering he had the entire crowd behind for whatever reason -- to the point where hardly anyone ever cheered when Tox would make a nice frag, but then Fat would get some ordinary kill and the crowd went wild -- and still got raped on the final map after Tox regained his composure.

I really think Fat should give it up. Since his name first rose to fame, tons of other games as well as the ones he plays now have big names -- Neo and Fr0d and Walle for CS, Moon and Grubby for WC3, John Choi and Afrolegends for SF2, Walshy and Tsquared for Halo 3, and so on -- that there really is no need for him as a poster boy for e-sports. If anything, I think he's wasting money at this point paying his "marketing guru," but then again, I can't say how much he makes off his sponsorships from Zalman right now. fwiw, FTP pays him nothing for being a "friend of Full Tilt:" he just gets back every single penny he pays in rake.

he played vs lauke in ut2003 in eswc. he drew with him in the group stages and lost to zulg in the semi final. he finished third place. and i believe zulg was at cpl where fat beat him. so its really unfair to say he done nothing in 2k3. its not easy to jump into a game like ut2k3 when all the top players there had been playing ut1 for 4 years.

It's underrated as a result of his hard work and the hours he invested into each game, yes, but underrated as a display of his skill? I think not. If you ask me, he lacks natural talent, and this was shown time and time again during 2005 in PK and 2006 in Q4. He easily practiced each game more than anybody else, which IMO was his only edge for years.

If you don't believe me, look at his poker results. He's said in an interview that he's aiming for the top, and yet he's still focusing on lame promos like this one while his stats online have plummeted -- not to mention he's clearly avoided paying for coaching and probably hasn't watched instructional videos from sites like DeucesCracked.

Bah.. This is because fatal1ty was by far the underdog in this match, and every attendee of WSVG knew it. It was a matter of "holy crap, maybe toxic can be beaten" more than anything else. I was excited, simply because toxic had rolled pretty much everybody for the better part of a year at that time.

So, I re-iterate. Those people were cheering because noone else had done what he was doing. And the ones cheering were the ones that had tried and failed to do it themselves.

I was cheering like mad for fatal1ty, from my computer room, as if I was yelling at the TV during the "big game". And I'd be a little bit surprised if stermy, cooller, lost cauze, et al, were paid to cheer for only fatal1ty. You've gone all conspiracy theorist on this shit. It's not like he hadn't had his ass kicked plenty of times before that match. He simply brought his A game and tox brought his F game at the beginning. Your logic of people cheering for Fat because he was the underdog and beating a visibly nervous Tox is just an excuse to ignore the probable case of you being a Fatal1ty fan. Any good player would have respected Tox's sheer skill and not cheered Fatal1ty on just because he was currently beating him as the underdog as:

- They knew that Fat had the home-field advantage and the audience was, for the most part, familiar with his name unlike Tox's.

- They knew that Tox was clearly better anyways. It wasn't even close on paper.

- The competitive scene generally dislikes Fatal1ty, apparently for reasons similar to mine.

So while I guess his friends and family were cheering him on because they personally want him to do well, him being the underdog was just more fish-feed for his "marketing guru" to use to hype up his "epic" comeback from the lower brackets. Aside from Fatal1ty's big matches and other nationalist instances (ie, wNv at KODE5 China, various French players at ESWC), I have never seen such ridiculous bias towards one player or team.

Also, I'm actually a toxjq fan, and agree with him that Quake 4 is the superior duel game to Quake 3. I'm pretty much the only Q4/Tox fan on this site. I have endured endless flaming about how much tox sucks and cooller is all that ever mattered. So no, this isn't some bias in fat's favor. I just remember following, live, every wsvg stop. Hopping in the QuakeTV server once the IP was announced and following the action as it was happening. And seeing Toxjq destroy players over and over again.
I think the actual case here is this just an excuse to ignore the probable case of you being anti-Fatal1ty.

Toxic and Fojji were the competitors at Quakecon Quad-damage 2007. Not fatal1ty. The people cheering were all cheering for Toxjq, and BOOING at fojji. Why? Maybe 2% of the people in attendance had ever heard of either of them. But it started out with Quake 1, then Quake 2. By this point, it was quite clear that Fox was the dominant player, so when Toxjq made a "comeback" by winning the Quake 3 match, it was a big deal and the crowd went wild every time Toxic got a frag on Fox. No mention of Fatal1ty when I was talking about that part. The "crowd" cheering at the Fatal1ty and Tox game? All competitors. All more than aware of where fatal1ty actually stood on the totem pole, many of them having recently beaten him (fatal1ty) themselves.

Tox has come across as arrogant at times. Him denying that he was nervous that match can easily be just that: denial. Just like him not giving Dahang credit for giving him such a close match at WSVG was arrogance. So I'd take that "evidence" of yours with a grain of salt. What you can't ignore, though, is that Tox did look nervous on the stage and was showing it by losing three maps in a row to a guy who was B-class in comparison.

Also, 2GD was the one who tried doing something about Tox not getting cheered for at all. He knows just as well as I do why Fat was getting the crowd's attention.

Lastly, the crowd generally wouldn't give a shit outside of that heat of the moment. The Qcon staff actually looks down on "pro gamers." It was just a heat-of-the-moment thing where people simply got into watching the match. You can't really compare something like Quakecon to WSVG, which was intended to be purely professional unlike Qcon.

I wouldn't hate on Fat without a reason. Not to mention that implying that I'm making this argument solely out of spite ignores the implication that you're defending him solely out of bias.

That's my point. If I'm biased towards one of those two players, I'd definitely go with Toxjq. Fatal1ty, while admirable in his achievements (though drastically overstated by his PR), I am a diehard Toxjq fan. I have 0 demos of Fatal1ty in Q4, only a couple for Q3. I have many Toxjq Q4 demos in various Q4max iterations.
If he was paid to throw the match, and the audience was paid to cheer for fat exclusively, then hey. Maybe that's something you should mention.

Me and Ph4ntom (from SA) used to try to get the most amount of frags against Anarki (nightmare) on t4 in 15 minutes. I got up to 143 to 1.

Ph4ntom got 159 to 0. That's with 1 bot on a "closed" map. You times his score by 4 and you get to the mid 600's.

You could probably find his demo somewhere online I think he uploaded it to some site. It's really boring to watch though.

With four he'd take more damage, get less items and kills would be stolen by bots.

I think you over-estimate how good nightmare bots are, I just did a quick test and I was easily able to get 600 frags an hour (playing a 10 minute game). The bots hardly ever go for rail and they don't mg you like standard practise on dm17. Also there is quad. If you get a good run on quad that could be 20 frags in half a minute.

It'd be different on t4 though!

I used to do little things like that. Hunter/Nightmare 15-0 under 5 mins. Best I got was 04:30 ish. You're not alowed to die once though.

This is how I see it.

He did great in Quake3, for the time he played it.

I've never seen him play in either UT(Except for the mtv thing), AvP and doom3, but I have seen the CPL 2005 PK finals.

And in those finals, he did amazing, simple as that.

Now, in quake4 I believe he hasn't won anything big but we did see him beat toxjq(wich is a big enough achievement:P).

Now, in Q3 he had decent aim but imo, nothing extraordinary like z4mus or toxjq.
But in Quake4 he showed some excellent aiming capabilities.

You can talk shit about fatal1ty all you want for his marketing approach (the constant >9000 championships boasting) but he HAS proven himself multiple times.

He has proven he adapt to a lot of different games/situations, and he has proven that he can improve his aim a lot at an age where you're reflexes are supposed to get slower.

Imo he's doing a great job in giving quake some mediatime, and a lot of people try to take away some of his wins, well. He DID win CPL in UT. He did win some of the greatest tournaments in Quake 3 and he did win Painkiller Finals which makes you world champion of that. Sure Vo0 might have played better, but its the final result that counts.
All in all what he does for esports is valuable for all of those hoping for it to expand.

His "reign", if it can be called like that, was 2 years TOPS, if so. and he didn't leave because of the lack of money, due to the fact that every single quakecon was 25k or 20k, wcg was 20k in 2k1, and in 2k2, so that story is pretty weak. he left cause he couldn't win anymore.

when he tried to make a comeback in 2002, he easily lost that semifinal to Daler on dm6 while making silly mistakes (3 x rail at the jumper was pretty best-pro-in-the-world), but he declared that QCON a success cause he beat z4 on dm6. pretty low standards for the world champion.

in the WCG US after QCON he *lost* that comeback on t2 vs socrates, he *lost* t4 vs cha0 with the buzzer rail. total success, so much for his q3.

I watched some stage of CPL (can't remember the exact date though) PK matches with vo0 vs fatality, long ago. Back then, in these matches, vo0 literally did a stomp dance on fatality's corpse throughout all the games. There was NO "world champion super-pro ZOMG TEH BESTEST" style from this "recordsman". There was no competition. There was only misery.

if you say staying on top of Quake 3 for 2 years is nothing you're wrong. No more people have played Quake 3 than there was at that time. There was great competition perhaps the greatest competition i can remember in Quake 3. How long did Thresh stay on top? ;)

He WON the event. He won it. End of discussion. You simply won't come any closer to a world championship in a game than this, and he won it. Yes Vo0 played better, but so did Brazil in the 1998 world championships of football as well, where they ended up losing in the final. If you have doubts still France won the World Championship cause of that they won the final game, and they were World Champion for 4 years cause of that.

You can bash him all you wan't but don't mock his best achievements, because those are really great achievements. And again he probably made more people aware of Quake and what that is than most of ESR's users put together. If his marketing brings new players to the game its not like you can't tell these that Fatal1ty actually wasn't always the best in Quake 3.

I'm not trying to take his achievements away from him, that wouldn't make sense. He won a LOT. I just say that he's 100 times more hype than he should be, cause he must be. The marketing is very important, so he blew many things out of proportions. 1000 times world champion, yeah.

He's not the best in ANY game. When he had any sort of competition, like ut2k3, doom3 (which he practiced far before anyone got it), he won the *first* event, cause that's the only way he can do it, practice 24/7 to prevail at the *first* event while doing nothing else in your life. As soon as anyone proceeds to involve a lot of time and adapt to the game, he leaves and searches for another one. Cause he's DONE. Do you think that's a coincidence? He did it pretty fast in q3,cause he was getting stomped, and 2 years are not really that much. (he lost a lot of matches in 99-01 years btw), he did it in ut2k3 (cause he started losing), he did it in doom3 (cause rocketboy destroyed him). I wouldn't really count avp2 as a championship. and vo0 was better in pk.

Im pretty sure that there were no prior world record for ffa-frags on dm17 in Q4, so it was pretty much up for grabs. Stupid record, but so are most records in Guiness.

I also dont think Fatal1ty set up this record attempt himself. It was basically a show match for the event, and im sure someone else have set it up for publicity. The guy is running a buisness, so why so much hate? :)

It's also hard to take all the comments about how bad he is serious, when he has done so well for himself.

Just to explain how this happent..

I was there, and i was allowed to get around 25mins with him.. and a mousepad and some junk plus the usual handshake..

The players were.. Hardly a challenge, i belive 5 of them hardly knew how to play, one who took over my PC didn't know how to walk for the first 2mins, then he though he needed to reload and didn't understand when we told him, that never exsisted.

2nd his pc was Synced to him we others had to ajust if we could..
Setting the mouse settings was a bitch everytime and 50 or so of his kills are from inactive players.

3rd... he was rather good, and if you were there you could see that he didn't have it easy he had cameras up his face and neck the hole time, people talked and yelled right behind him, at one time a reporter took his huge ass camera and placed it right next to me so i lost 10% of the screen and had a nice Humming noise..

Then again It's a PR Stunt and if you don't like it.. you are able to beat his score, its a Record just f'ing beat it, im pretty sure someon will set up the same shit somewhere next to you in the future.

Oh and last.. to answer why nobody attacked him..
The Names where Fucked up, 3 of the Pc's didn't have names only [Blank] Shot [Blank], on my PC his name was Player_5 i found out, on another Pc his name was Joker, and on the last his name was [Blank], the same problem with the chars nobody saw the same model.. either Red, blue or Purple.
