We're going to use QuakeZero as a beta test in deploying different systems, spectating ability, matchmaking, doing different tournaments, collecting data, all that stuff that goes into the game. They were throwing ideas around... and they are most likely still only in that stage because they are busy with Rage, Doom 4 and quakelive. They also said a new quake title depends on how successful quakelive is. (And this doesn't look too well atm imho)

I honestly think that if they choose to take some brave new steps they could create a new quake that was viable as a popular game and still respected its roots. Even if it didn't come under the Quake name.

It's still far from impossible for game devs (and in particular id) to develop the next big thing that satisfies the hardcore crows as well imo. But honestly I haven't seen it happen in the past few years, I don't see it happen right now and therefore I rather don't get my hopes or expectations up and just prepare to feel lucky once (if) it actually happens.

i think that in order to produce a relevant online shooter quake arena 2 has to have more than just stat collecting and better graphics, it should bring innovative gameplay mechanics maybe like virtual betting and deeper interaction between player and the game in the form of player progression, so players can identify with their own ingame avatar as if they were participating in a real life sport event, meaning they would have virtual clan transfers, get credits for their wins which they can spend on new equipment and skins (without breaking the balance of course) and much much more cool stuff that adds depth to the gameplay outside the arena, right now there is basically play in the arena and the rest is just game settings and player stats.

what about some real gameplay mechanics inovations instead of useless sims-like stuff ?

Because gameplay mechanics are seldomly things that will keep the masses stick around. No matter how innovative.

While I agree that "gimmicks" do attract and keep players around, I have to disagree on the point you are making.

While we all love to think Deathmatch/Quake/whatever are the best multiplayer games with great game mechanics and all the other games are just stupid games with gimmicks it just isn't true.

There are serious flaws and problems with Deathmatch/Quake which stop people from playing them.

You don't get that feeling of progress at all because a five frag loss could be just as bad if not worse than one you lost by twenty. Unlike in CS where you can tell if you've had a great impact on a round, often in Quake team games you've no idea.

Slippery Slope and Spawn frags are terrible and don't benefit the game.

You can't really remove the "slippery slope" tho as removing PUs would ruin the gameplay, its up to the map maker.

Lots of things contribute to the slippery slope in Quake games.

Interesting article. Slippery slope provides a good argument vs. the vq3 armor scheme as opposed to let's say the cpm one.

Also for the differing MH systems.

As long as MH is something that gets picked up mainly by the down player I agree. i.e. it works in favor of the down player in cpm, but I guess its relative strength in vq3 would work for the in control one.

You can't hope the MH will get picked up by the down player :P

In VQ3 it's a fair situation, every spawn.

hoonymode? in case ur unfamiliar with it its basically round based duels. its an idea worth pursuing imo. it takes away a lot of the gameplay and strategy features of the classic duel but it does add other aspects, especially when it comes to spectating.

The round based style doesn't work for team modes though (Which is what I thought he was replying to, though it could have been more general).

Personally I don't think it does remove a lot of the game mechanics and strategy from classic duels only the ones that have an overall negative influence on the game (Spawn frags).

err i would say that map control - as in what u do when u get fragged, is possibly the single most important aspect of q3 duels. but yea might not really make sense from a spectator pov unless someone comes up with an idea to present it in some novel and understandable (to the casual observer) way.

You still get all that, since you'd be stupid to just rush aim constantly at the start of every round. You need to control the map and items or turn it around without a frag happening/dieing.

yea. the dynamic changes. ull have a bit of the control aspect within each round. but ud also have a comeback aspect as in people coming back from being rounds down rather than being frags down.

the only issue i have with it is that i can imagine this becoming a bit lol in vq3 with nobody attacking :). there needs to be some incentive for +fwd.

In fact it's very important that people can see the progress they are making, how they are overcoming challenges and achieving targets within their ability and being able to stand out from the crowd.

Without a community a multiplayer game is nothing, the most important thing you can do is make people care about the game and it's more important than making the game mechanics perfect.

It's not about features that are cool, it's about features that allow people to bond with the game, become involved with it and their own progression within the game.

How can you not be convinced by this. All the modern multiplayer games being released are featuring more of this and the developers who implement the best features are the games with communities (I'm not even talking just FPS games either).

Of course money is an issue but come on, it's the weakest argument against doing other stuff ever. There is only so much mapping and game balance work you can do no matter how much money is thrown at it.

The XBOX achievment points are different to the points that you spend to buy stuff and are without actual purpose.

The reason why people are driven to complete these tasks and challenges isn't the unlockable at the end of it, it's the challenge. There are plenty of games with unlocks and collectables which serve no purpose but to be are badges of honour to proove it.

By all means stick your head in the sand and tell yourself that these things are unimportant and that the game rules over all but it's blatantly not true and the evidence for that is all around you.

sorta agree with you in the sense that the game needs more than just core gameplay when it comes to attracting new audiences. but im not sure if what u call gimmicks are really the answer. i think most people say gimmicks for success only because it seems to have worked before. theres no compelling argument to say that its the only way for quake to become successful. take real life sports for instance, people dont play soccer because of gimmicks. most real life sports have even simpler rulesets than quake. even less variables. granted the physical aspect makes for some fundamental differences but i think the argument still holds that u dont need gimmicks and shit to make a game attractive. as to what would...dont really know :)

Have you ever sat down with anybody and watched them play CoD4 or a game with similar achievments?

They talk about doing it to get the unlock, but as soon as they get it they just move on to the next challenge anyway.

Obviously in a situation where in order to compete the ones who are wanting to play in leagues/cups/LANs et cetera are only doing it to get the unlock but these people will play anyway.

Actually, quite a lot of the next unlocks require you to use a certain weapon or get kills in a certain way which limits what you can use in order to obtain it.

I assume you played it on PC (Since you thought Gamer points could be spent for actual stuff), in which case I also assume you were playing over the internet. So you weren't sat watching someone (Who's a complete newbie and the type of audience you want to attract) try and achieve the achievements.

haha, 5 years or so ago, I've written to id they should do a mmorpg in quakestyle, maybe in a way like wow, just when you enter a dungeon, you join a server, and then you can play cooperative against dungeon monsters, maybe with different classes, scout (fast and lightly armed), Heavy (like big armor rocket launcher and chaingun with some armor) and some guy with magical powers, maybe from the game heretic/hexen or so :-).
Maybe also try to generate random dungeons like in diablo :-)
And your avatar can get better with time (more armor, different weapons) ... And outside the dungeon roleplaying and no fighting :-)
... yeah a fps-mmorpg is what we need :-)

I don't think they've officially announced any confirmation on another Quake title, only hinted that it was possible. Quakecon will likely have plenty of Rage crap, and maybe even a playable demo. Possibly some Doom 4 pics/videos, but I doubt there will be much.

Also, unless it featured some good team based gametype I wouldnt bother playing it, I have a really hard time believing a 1on1 based fps will be successful, teams > individuals ffs ;)

In order to have a new Quake game be successful the most important thing would be to NOT make it to much like Q3/QL. If the game is to much like Q3, then the good Q3 players will be able to pick up on the game very quickly, and immediately, start raping any noobs that hope to have fun. Part of why the Quake series was successful in the past was because the first 3 Quake games are so much different from each other.

The game will have to be far different than anything we have seen before, that way even the best players will have a lot to learn.

This was an issue with Q4. Q3 players were able to pick up on Q4 very fast, because it's to similar to vq3. The only significant differences are the additions of crouch sliding, and ramp jumping.

I also think it would be pretty boring if id makes another Quake that tries to copy Q3's multiplayer. We have played Q3 style multiplayer for 10 years now. If they want to copy anything though, I vote for a Quake World follow up, because from an unbiased stand point, (my first Quake was Q3) Quake World is by far the most exciting. Plus I cant see much of the Q1 community moving on anyway.

No mater how different QV will be Quake players ALWAYS will be able to pick up on the game very quickly. Aim will be the same, timing will be the same and most of all mental condition of pro/semipro/good players will be the same so there is nothing that you can do.

A good Q1 player cannot start Q3 for the first time, and be good at it within a week, and vice-versa. Q1 has a different armor system, faster weapon switch, different movement, faster rockets, no RG, etc. It might sound easy to adjust to all that, but if you have played the same game for 5+ years, it can be very difficult.

Why do you say that? The Aiming is not the same in every Quake game, and neither is timing.


Trust me, if Q5 was something completely new, it would definitely favor the noobs. There would be a new way to play the game in general. But if we get more Q3 style gameplay, all of the Q3 players will already have a good idea of how to play the game, and it will stop the game from growing early on.

Edit: another thing is think about is how much the chances would improve of new top players emerging from the scene. If the game was a Q3 follow up we would most likely continue to see the same players over and over winning in the tournaments.

You are simply wrong. We have real-life example: former very good Quakers in Poland start to play in CoD4 (and they NEVER play anything except Quake) They wasn't best CoD team in Poland, but they definitely play on very very high level after 2-3 months of practice. It will be similar in new Quake no mater what you do.

What you must do is:
- remove strafejumping and give players TOTALLY new way of movement(including key press, mouse angles etc) It must not be similar to QW,Q2/Q3/QL,CPM,PK or UT
-remove Instant hit weapons like MG,SG,LG and RG
-remove RL. Change RL speed won't work as: QW has 1200ups speed, Q2 has 650, Q3 has 800, CPM has 1000. I play Q2/CPM so i can fit very well to slow/fast RL
-Make armors to spawn randomly. When it will be constant, players always will be able to feel right time of respawn.

I other way: it won't be Quake anymore.

COD4 is not a good example. It's a slow paced aim game. I'm not saying it doesn't take skill, but there is no way COD has as big of a learning curve as Quake does.

I bet you, a really really good vq3 1v1 player that has never played QW, would not be able to go on QW and beat a mediocre player on aerowalk or ztn, EVEN after a few days practice.

Both players would know the map, but it would all come down to the fact that one guy knew the game, and the other guy didn't.

What there won't be at Quakecon is any Quake. Frankly when it comes to id I've given up hope and I wish they'd just go away. Todd can do his porn movies, Johny Carmack can make is cell phone games and exploding rockets and everyone else can work on their Motorstorm game. Please don't bother with Quake 5 because it'll just be another disappointment.

The computer games market has grown up and iD haven't evolved with the times. Maybe them joining zenamax will make them a new heavy hitter vs Activision and EA.

People now have access to games from the consoles online and have no reason to buy a 1000 quid machine to play the "latest and greatest" games.

The future of games lies with consoles as they make far more money than exclusive pc games. Of course they will port them to the pc
