you can learn yourself by practice and watching demo's, its all there. Its easy to see and understand whats going on, maybe something like this would work in an RTS but not a FPS.

In E-sports' very short history, Stermy picks the worst moment to bring such a concept. ( A concept that was unofficially tried by Lost Cause on irc about 3 years ago )

I can't see many people spending euros on this during a recession, not to mention a complete drought of events in 1v1 fps e-sports.

Not that i'm entirely surprised by this guy's decisions anymore anyway....that FIFA stunt was a sign.

Also, online lessons over Vent....no thanks.

The concept isn't new at all. Like someone said, CS pros have been doing this for years (ESEA, SK gaming several years ago, etc). And I doubt they're the only ones. But they charge a LOT less and I'm pretty sure most have actually worked on their teaching routines (I personally will never pay for such a lesson though).

This would make sense if this game allowed huge skillgaps and had professional tournaments all over with decent moneyprizes. Yet its really neither. Its a game that strides to make it fun for everyone(except anyone serious). At all times "everyone must be able to get frags and feel they do well", and there are no tournaments with good prizes anyways. Good prizes would be more money than you spend on the trip to the event, lol.

Also if what vedic say is true that he is breaking the EULA then this will be taken down very soon :p

Yes, but i think thats because they make the key error in dumbing the game down. They think by doing this it will be more popular, and fail to see that this really makes the game boring and uninteresting most of the time. Obviously i'm biased in my view cause i really want it to be fun, and to me the appeal in quake was always the high level of competition and the huge skillgaps so you really felt you could improve a lot by practicing and even see the results from that practice. I don't really see the good reason for them to dumb it down unless there was no ranking, but with ranking and tiers dumbing down the gameplay just seems stupid, should really make it a harder game but retain the ranking, that way low skill players would still play low skill players and have fun, and high skill players would play high skill players and feel less frustrated when they lose a game cause of the huge limitations of the game. I'd much prefer getting raped by someone where i have to say: "ok that guy was much better than me", rather than winning a close game struggling to beat a player that should really have no chance at all. Alright enough rant, it will never change i just have to accept that, one can hope for cpm gameplay implemented as a gamemode so i(and many others) would have fun playing. I guess my final hope is pmx :)

I agree on that.
The whole... "Concept" seems to be flawed, even if we pretend not to notice techincal issues (netcode, bugs, critical lack of funcionality, etc.), which is barely possible.
However, CPMers will never go for that one even with gameplay implemented (even if the gameplay will be implemented "as is"). Put aside "ZOMG PROMODE IS DEAD!!!111oneon", CPM(A) (as a complete system) gives you almost perfect enviroment for playing, why would anyone switch to bugged baseq3 with "STATS IN BROWSER!" anyway?
I suppose there are 2 key ways the game should be improved in: 1) technical and 2) your idea of "really make it a harder game but retain the ranking".
It's hard to determine to which one hitboxes size of a wardrobe are related, i suppose the 2nd.
Well enough of theories since it won't change indeed :>

I think cpm'ers would switch, and the reason i think so is the inevitable larger playerbase it would give. After all, i know a lot of cpmers play Quake Live as it is, for this very reason, that theres many players. Having an official cpm mode in Quake Live would remove a lot of the difficulties about getting started with the game plus it would show the game to a wider audience. I know when i started Quakeing i didn't like playing mods at all cause then it wouldnt be the "real thing".

Not rape, closer games than they should be. There are many reasons to this which i've explained many times elsewhere, in journals and such. But it's ok its their intention to make the game that way, that means they achieved what they wanted, i just believe they're shooting past the target group.

Maybe i played too much cpm, but like the other day we played a PCW in QL TDM 4on4, all games were pretty close even though our teamplay was way better on one map, and their teamplay was much better on another map. We won all the games, but afterwards it didn't feel like a win, it felt frustrating all along, the mg cessing, the weak movement meaning you pretty much can't dodge anything. I mean sure you can say the netcode is good, but both teams with avg. 50% on rails, honestly, we're div 3 and the clan we played was div 5, it used to be a challenge to get high accuracies, now everyone have super aim, and the armors is close to useless in protection, i really think changes are needed to make it more about actual skill rather than limiting the players so much.
And i know you'll say thats just because we were close in skill, but that is just not the case, anyways, you already called me retarded so i don't know why i argue.

We aren't Div5, ESR is meant to be Dird/ndrj +me and adr (Since I hadn't played for like a year+ and adr was around when it was set up). I've ended up playing more than planned (since the other guys wanted to play as iM again) and hence got a lot better than I would be playing.

In Q3 we were playing and beating teams in QL Div3 CB comfortably.

And Dird comfortably balances out the skill :)

You talk about aim being so easy yet yours was entirely average apart from your rail? So where is your "actual" skill? Oh it's in another game? Why do you subject yourself to this game if it limits you to such an unbearable extent?

It hasn't been hard to hit good accuracies for about 8 or 9 years. Top players do not have a monopoly on good technique.

QL TDM is bullshit in the same way (but worse) that OSP TDM was.

Don't go round a corner because if you don't get railed you'll die to a single shotgun blast despite being modestly well equipped, no need to worry about powerups, we'll just rail the shit out of it!

(That said, the Battlesuit in QL feels sufficiently powerful to me)

The price should either be a lot cheaper or what you get for the price should be radically different.

A one hour lesson with Stermy is going to get you nowhere, so you'd have to have multiple lessons over time which would be far too expensive to bother with.

We don't even know what these lessons are like. Do you just get to play Stermy for an hour and him give you a few pointers?

although i was expecting a reation like this on esr i still wonders why ppl think its completely useless and a stupid idea.
its overpriced okay, but stermy is a great player and im sure that you can learn something from him in term of metagame etc.. or if someone wants to play ql more serious but is new to the quake serious, why shouldnt he spent his money on this? the progress will be faster than just watching demos. although he obviously also needs to do that and train alot but this 1h might help and motivate him alot.
i usually hate these comparisons (and this one isnt even good) but would ppl hate like this on someone offering to teach guitar for 40€/h? no cause thats not unusual and you cant expect to make any money out playing guitar either but you will get better and have fun.

Apparently noone in here is familiar with the concept of the so-called "market forces" - demand and supply.

Yes, the cost of those lessons is fucking ridiculous; absolutely tragic. However, the 200-comment-long whine is even worse.

Here's the deal: In theory, even if Stermy set the price at 20€/hour he would get such positive responce, that he would probably have turn people down, or forget about going out, cinema, food, drinks, and the occasional stermy-fun-time in the toilet. Furthermore, given that even though he's skilled, he cannot stop time, he would end up making approximately the same amount of money he will be making now. Only by helping some of the less desperate/determined/rich gamers too- which is kind of a waste of time, anyway.

In practise, some of the above may variate or not be valid at all - depends on the time he would be willing to spend on these lessons, but the basic idea is the same.

Bottom line? You whine cz you would like it to be free. Well, tough luck. He won't get rich through this, and even though its obviously not be the best example of a good-value-for-money service, he will definately help the people that are willing to pay this remarkably stupid amount.

Even though stermy didnt really prove himself in any ql tournaments yet, he is a top player for sure and certainly knows a thing or two about the game most of you guys don't know.

the things he knows that most guys don't know takes months of experience to learn. You won't learn that by 1 hour 30€ lessons. At that you will at most learn to copycat a few things and probably get a better approach to the game if you are really a beginning player, and even then i doubt theres any real value to be seen in the long run. :)

When I first started playing online games(ET) I didn't know anything.

A player a lot better than me explained how the movement worked, how to play some of the classes, bit of tactics and all that.

It helped a lot, and it would've taken a lot longer if I were to figure it out all by myself.

of course it's going to be obvious why they are better than the average player

movement, aim, timing and prediction are all traits that can be observed

but every top player has all of those, yet some excel and others don't. even average players have can have those things

when I was playing noctis and asking for pointers he didn't have a clue really, it was just in his head and all instinct, no real thought process he just knew what to do and I think that's going to be the case for a lot of the top players

games, matches, sets and maps or whatever are not long enough for them to be any other way. if you put cooller and avek together playing for an hour on the same map then I think you'll see players with more longer term thinking and developing a play style that's stems from thinking about what they are doing more than instinct.

I'd say 99% of the people who take lessons don't do it with the plan to win their money back.

However, paying for lessons in real sports works as motivation for some people to actually do something. And physical fitness is worth quite some money, imo.

i paid that kinda money for A MONTH of professional tennis lessons that included 2 hours of tennis and one hour of fitness training everyday. i did ok within the local circuit but not much else... i just didn't have what it takes. however, the money i spent was definitely worth it considering how high you can climb in an established sport and the added benefits of the exercise you get everyday.

to pay the same for an hour of QL lessons is just retarded.

I think back in 1990 my parent payed something around 5-10 Euro per hour for my tennis lessons. However, that was for a group lesson.

Anyway I will agree that it's worth it if you enjoy it and it also serves as motivation for you to actually get out and do sports. Also, if you can afford it ;P

I didn't say that every pro in every sport offers lesson, but you certainly will find out that a lot of them do, especially those who can use some side earning cause they arent good enough to live from prize money.

i'm all for coaching and helping, it's beneficial and very rewarding if you enjoy teaching although this has some shit surrounding it:

the price is disgusting for the time you get

because you're good at something does not mean you are good at teaching and being able to pass on your ability. you can be really poor or have next to no experience in something but still teach people to be very talented just on the basis of being good at teaching.

teaching worked for CS where there are over 100,000 idiots and in a much slower game where it is easier to teach someone, QL has none of that.

the kind of person to pay for this not have a clue who stermy is, unless that fifa bullshit made him super popular but I doubt it

how to play quake is exceptionally hard to put into words past the basics because so much of it is experience and instinct

if I'm paying that kind of money I want someone like avek, rapha, or cooller, players who play a smart game that's well calculated and don't rely on bullshit netcode to hit stupid rails

you can't even practically teach someone how to play quake beneficially past the movement and basic format of duel play which can be learnt by watching a handful of demos/videos and reading the 101 newbie guides. this of which, id should have provided.

Do I think this hurt his reputation? Frankly, the only people who are that upset about it are the raging cunts here on ESR, which is a minority, so no.

The prices are arguable, but it seems that everyone here has a problem with him doing it at ALL, let alone the high cost. Even if it was half the price, the same result would of happened.

The one hour lesson could change a LOT. Take an average casual, in an hour he can learn timings, weapon balance, control, positioning, etc. It doesn't take an hour to explain timing. I think people could benefit from it, but I think they'd have to do a few lessons to make a BIG impact.

Noobs Anonymous originally was a group of teachers founded by maertz to teach new CPMA players and help them getting to learn how to use the somewhat complex CPMA movement. IF you cannot afford the lessons then thats fine. The lessons are for people who are motivated and dedicated in learning more about quake coming from one of the best players with the best aim in the series. He has expert knowledge and credibility in this game. If you are truly dedicated to the game and advancing your knowledge then im sure making money to pay for the lessons wont be a problem. However, if you kinda would ask stermy or get a bunch of people to suggest he lower the prices then maybe he will consider. for the time being i am very doubtful. I teach Counter Strike Source at 30 US dollars an hour. So i understand where hes coming from. Unfortunately in Professional gaming his name has more history and experience then i do. Its like a product. Your paying for the name :) have a nice day everyone and good luck STERMY! ill try to scrape up some money for you bro! :D

:))) Just make sure your hair is long enough to go to a barber and cut it properly... when you are there, you ask to please leave the front and sides to a decent lenght to model it how you like and make sure the back and top is shorter than the front so you can make it a bit messy. Be careful that you don`t really see the difference between the top short part and the long hair in the front ;p
