The whole reason it's going no-lan is to fight piracy. Have fun possibly getting a broken version that doesn't work on real servers, and about a year or more behind any patch.

In the case where you can't try it, I'd say I support downloading over blindly supporting. The only information that really gets back home to the developer is the number of copies sold. If you buy it and you don't like it, the only thing they tally is your purchase. When you download it, YOU get to make the decision if you really want to support it with the purchase. I'm sure most people aren't true to the honor system, but I support the concept. I'd much rather have a functional demo, however.

The alternative to this is simply to make quality games. I intend to preorder and buy SC2 (even though I've already got a beta key, but even if I didn't) based on the merits of SC. Though I don't like what I hear about Diablo 3, I'd be willing to give it the benefit of the doubt due to Diablo 2. I preordered Doom 3 and Quake 4 on the merits of their predecessors, but because they have failed so hard, I wouldn't gamble on any future titles.

I think the most scary thing to happen to gaming is the recent MMO trend of having players put money down on the game in order to score beta access. Developers can now release as beta when they would have normally released, keep it closed for a few weeks and give people access who preorder, then they have the excuse that it's beta to protect the lack of quality. Sickening, really.

As if blizzard isn't making enough money already. Crippling the game to remove lan fucking sucks regardless of motives. Lan gaming is integral and forcing people to use battlenet sucks big time.

Blizzard (or, more accurately, Activision) only care about money. All the old developers who made games like SC and Diablo are working at other companies like NCSoft.
