Because I tend to agree with many of the people that have told me their opinions about movies? There are certainly people who's opinions I have no respect for when they tell me whether a movie is good or not, mainly movie critics. The only people I really listen to for movie advice are people who I've watched and enjoyed movies with, and had plenty of great conversations about movies with.

Also, Paranormal wasn't bad; it was just pretty unoriginal. Blair Witch Project, before it was excessively parodied by everyone, was probably the scariest film I've ever seen (albeit I was 14 or 15 when I first saw it).

Thrillers and horrors films are some of the hardest movies to make because 1) you sometimes have an audience reluctant in all ways to be scared/thrilled/on-edge, and 2) if you make one mistake, it can end up being funny rather than scary/thrilling.

Nah, I'm a big fan of horror films and really enjoyed Blair Witch, as an example of a similarish film that was also hyped. The Thing, Audition, The Ring are examples of scary films, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre etc, your saying it's me at fault for not liking the film is quite irritating, I am not a non-fiction fan, just a non-shit fan.

I dunno, I think Paranormal had it's moments. Not terrifying, but it definitely was better than the typical trash that floats around in the horror genre.

I think horror films are really, really dependent on your mood and whether the movie has been spoiled any for you in advance. I saw Blair Witch alone at home at 1am with no pre-conceptions about the film and it fucked me up for days following that...

EDIT: Also, I agree about the audience. I saw The Ring in a theatre and I remember how deathly silent the theatre was during the whole film. I think it added to the experience that people were as unnerved and quiet as I was during the scary moments.

I've only heard good things about paranormal but I'm in no rush to see it. I also saw blair witch when I was about the same age as you lolo, in the cinema aswell, and that final image of the person hanging in the corner will forever be etched in my mind.

I downloaded it but I watched in a mood receptive to a good horror film, room darkened and window open letting cold air in just to get the vibe going. I try to go with the flow of films, any film is spoiled easily if you set out to hate it, all I knew coming into Paranormal Activity was that it was supposed to be scary so I hoped it was. I could have written and directed this film, and I could have written a better ending (or endings as there seem to be a multitude of slightly different ones). The demon spent most of the film being the equivalent of a kid who rings the doorbell and runs away. It didn't feel like a very good or subtle build up and the progression of its ability to interact didn't seem sufficiently justified. It could also have done with a tiny bit of explanation perhaps. There was so much dead and lame time in the film, the computer analysis bits, the dullness of daytime.

Audiences certainly help, women who scream or jump make horror films way better but most girls hate horror films tt. On the flipside I saw the Exorcist with the worst audience ever- a smart-arsed university audience who wanted to show how deep their meta appreciation of the film was so laughed at most of it. This was just after it was unbanned in the UK I think.

Perhaps it's just a vein of scariness that can only be mined once for each person? I found Ghostwatch scary although I was pretty young when it was on, maybe this exact flavour's done for me or Ghostwatch did it better.

Apparently the ending in the wide-release theatrical version was imagined by Spielberg. Keep in mind the movie itself has been completed for more than a couple years and has slowly been ebbing up from the indie circuit of film festivals.

My overall on Paranormal was C+.

But I think it had some really classy moments like the powder footsteps on the floor and the girl being dragged out of the bed. It kept a good tempo, kept an escalating tension up to the finale. It did, however, rip Blair Witch with the structure of the story-telling and some of the moments were slightly cheesy (girl standing next to the bed and the Ouija were pretty lame).

I found it pretty entertaining and creepy, because it leaves so much to the imagination. Apart from the house, there's no manifestation of the "evil" that's happening to the girl. Another thing is, that i found it very authentic. Which is good ofc.

Silent Hill had its moments, triangle-head guy is a great villain. If you're a horror film fan Martyrs and The Killing Room are worth checking out.

I recently watched a bunch of old 80's horror films and hell I found them hilarious. Evil dead 2 is by far the best of the lot. One of the first horror films to implement a chase cam. They did it by strapping the camera to a plank and making 2 guys run with it, no jokes.

Heh, tempting to lay in to Pandorum now, I was talking about Paranormal Activity (2007!). Other than having Cung Le in the movie what was up with all that Kung Fu nonsense? Pandorum could have been such a good film, what a waste of potential.

As lolograde pointed out, the Paranormal Activity's theatrical release ending(as well as a few kinda cool added details) is COMPLETELY different than the pirated screener version floating around.

imho, the film's somewhat plodding intro/middle serves ONLY to build up to the actually pretty damn surprisingly jolting ending. So basically it's a lot of foreplay watching leading up to quite a worthy moneyshot at the end. The pirated version is quite unsatisfactory.

That sounds worse than the ending I saw. Audition is a good example of a slow build up toward the horrific, Paranormal Activity isn't.

I think Micah flipping thru that old illustrated demon book set the tone for what this demon would look like and was a pretty good move on the director's part. Too bad they couldn't capitalize on this (it's a shoe-string budget flick, anyhow). But at least I'm glad that Hollywood didn't strangle the movie's essence with some over the top special fx for the ending that wouldn't have fit.

A much better ending would've been something more like Blair Witch... Micah's POV holding the camera, running downstairs and catching a split second glimpse of the demon (or better yet, just a silhouette of it) standing over a dead/dying/screaming Katie, camera gets knocked out of his hands. Camera static/blue-screen-of-death.

Yeah, this is partly why I am being so harsh on the film because I think you or I could easily improve it. There needed to be a little more backstory, the demon randomly targetting her because her house burned down was a bit meh. What are they saying, was she supposed to have died in the house fire? Did the Ouija board nonsense actually mean anything? I do like open questions and an open ending would have been far stronger but I don't like to feel it's just random elements thrown in to create a story. Why doesn't Micah take the warnings at all seriously even after really weird shit is happening? 'Don't get a ouija board, it's what's lead to physical harm' 'Oh I know, I'll get an ouija board'.

I know he bought the ouija board to "communicate" with the demon, but he also didn't seem to take it seriously, even after receiving the message. Hell he sat there and watched the video of the demon carving its message and he didn't say "Wow, that's too much for me. Peace out Katie." He stayed and just antagonized it.

Well I think you're comparing oranges to apples...Paranormal Activity was a $19,000 home project shot by a graphic arts/animator graduate, with no cinematography, set design, etc. -- more of a "spectator sport with a wait for it, wait for it ending," a theater experience best enjoyed with screaming teens(where I saw it anyway)...
whereas Audition(which I also saw, not in a theater) is an auteur-inspired work of art, by an experienced visionary who works extremely methodically and slow with an eye for the grotesque, quasi-obscene, and every kind of inverted norm imaginable.

Paranormal's almost nostalgic, drive-in and get some popcorn and everybody scream at the same points. Much, much less story than Blair Witch and without as much fake documentary and seriousness.

++ But I'll give you this: Both flicks begin innocently with good intentions and turn very, very nasty at the end.

In this movie, two terrorists shot at a piece of wood so the piece of wood doesn't fall onto them. The main character succesfully gets away from the terrorists in a truck only to get out of it 100 meters after for no reason, to go into the same scene and resume the chase on foot.

That was in like the first 10 minutes.

It was a pretty decent film, ok it was cheesy beyond belief, but if you like all the CGI that go with these disaster movies then this has raised the bar.

Typical bullshit story and corny messages, but its 2.5 hours of eye candy and it does raise the bar.

Its the type of film you have to see on the big screen though, its not worth watching otherwise. Nice indication to where games will be in about 5-8 years time.

Just don't go in there expecting anything but light entertainment and you'll come out feeling you got your money's worth.

Well, although I don't think I mentioned in this thread that I enjoyed The Ring, I'll say it here. I did like it. =)

It was a very well-made/produced (and especially well-edited -- one of the best edited films in recent memory, in fact) horror film. The acting was great, the scenes/lighting/sets, cinematography, dialogue, tempo and progression (element of editing) were all top-class. These are rarities to the horror genre. Hitchcock, the man to make the first "classy" horror films. M. Night Shyamalan continued that w/ The Sixth Sense and Signs. And with the American version of The Ring again redeemed us from the Chainsaw-Massacres/Saws shock/gore horror that has been ruling horror cinema today.

And I think it, while it may have a relatively silly plot, they made good work of editing/cinematography to build a consistent tension (important element to pulling off good scares). The short clips of strange/gruesome shots (the finger pushing over a nail) that never seemed out of place, but still made me very uncomfortable/tense. And more than that Verbinski didn't use any cheap/traditional horror tricks for scares.

Anyhow, I know a lot of people who hated it, as well. And I think the reason is because of the nature of horror films. Horror is, I'll say it again, one of the toughest genres of movies to get right. One simple mistake can turn a "scary scene" into an unintentionally funny one and making something genuinely scary is a lot harder than it seems... especially when you have to do it for at least 90 minutes.

I'm looking forward to Shutter Island since Scorsese is one of the times best directors and lets see if he's capable of pulling off making a good horror flick. But Verbinski's Ring will stand the test of time, imo, as one of the few classy horror films produced.

Yeah, it wasn't bad... I didn't say it was super amazing, though. Minus for all the religious/serendipity crap, but yeah, it was well-made and the last decent movie that M. Night made. But my point was that horror movies fall into categories. Gore, shock, and psychological (there's probably more ways to categorize, but I think this encapsulates the major elements). I was simply explaining how The Ring is, in my opinion, one of the few classy/well-made horror flicks in recent years which is coincidentally not Gore/Shock based in scare tactics.

Look at what the majority of horror films are these days; Saw sequels (Gore), Freddy/Jason sequels (gore/shock), The Ruins (gore), Chainsaw Massacre remakes/sequels (Gore), Hostel (gore), Paranormal Activity (psychological -- only because it plays on the power of suggestion), Silent Hill (psychological). Of course, there's minor variations in each movie's elements, but for the most part these are the way I would categorize them.

I would say, for the most part, that the general horror movies of late are just about gore. And the reason is that it doesn't take any real movie making expert to make a movie where people are being diced to ribbons in various, novel ways. The Saw series is a perfect example of how brain-dead the genre can be.

The difference is in the eating. The Ring was scary, Paranormal Activity was not. I didn't think Paranormal Activity worked well on the suggestive level at all, if you set out to make a cheapo and obvious as fuck ghost movie you'd think of things like the foot prints. Apparently the demon has the same feet as Big Bird.

I can't say the ring was a great movie, it definitely was not. In terms of the script etc it was cheesy and really predictable, but it was still damn scary with no lights and no prior knowledge of the movie. Paranormal activity on the other hand, although a decently written movie, was really not that scary. Honestly for me, it didn't really instill any sense of fear that other scary movies definitely have done.

And some of the stuff definately got me thinking "what the..?". at the point where the door moved, i really wasnt prepared for that to happen. and the loud sound the next night, without even some music to warn me, well that scared me alright.

then there are movies like the ring, or rather, for the sake of the argument, let me use the grudge with sarah michelle gellar as an example, because several scenes come to mind as to how movies like that work:

she hears something, music gets slow and bassy, you know you're gonna get scared stiff within the next minute. she walks through the house, the camera is watching her from the front, you see the face of the actress and are kind of 'moving backwards'. you're allready clinchign your seat when the music reaching a climax, suddenly a loud noise! sarah michelle gellar jumps a bit! a cat has miawed really loud and jumps away! pew, thank god thats over with, the music calms down again.

exactly. i watched it a second time with two mates and it scared me again. ok, i was pretty stoned and tired and at that point i forgot most of what happend in the film, but the loud thump in the second (or third?) night? jesus.

my mates were going "what the fuck?!", too. :D

movie category "fun when stoned or hammered". also insta excessive is the best mod in the world.

Anything that lots of people see becomes a part of the mainstream, joining the mainstream has no impact on that thing's quality. By saying mainstream I suppose I imply less good simply because things that are deep and challenging are usually too inaccessible for the mainstream.

I didn't say anything about something earning more than $100m not being able to be deep, Paranornal Activity was never deep in the first place. Are you really about to argue it's deep in any way? It may have worked for you as an entertainment and have been scary, to try to argue it's deep seems utterly laughable. Why are you so offended that I think Paranormal Activity is shit? It's been praised all over the place, I think it can stand an attack.

Ok I just got back from the late showing.

Conclusion, it wasn't very good at all, It wasn't terrible, but unless you really like these films and can see good in bad then you'll be disappointed.

I manged to get get a cheap ticket from some reward scheme as I have been a right cinema geek this month and I won about 8 pounds in the arcade wile waiting to go in, so the film and junkfood cost me nothing, but its shocking to think a film that cost 6000 dollars to make and could have been shot in a few days (with a 300 dollar camera) once the script was done is now all over cinemas selling full price.

Don't get me wrong, I think they've done really well with the resources they got, but they if they want to charge full price then you have to think of it as any other film and in the deepest sense, its shite.

On the plus side I enjoyed Law Abiding Citizen as I thought.

Also looking forware to seeing the box and that creepy asylum horror with dicaprio.
