In collaboration between myself, id software's TTimo, the Dreamhack staff,

Marcus "djWHEAT" Graham and

GreasedScotsman of QuakeLive.tv, we will be providing live video coverage of the the entire group and bracket stage of the event. We have also changed the groups around so that we can cover all of the main matches of the group stage, and have provided a (very loose) schedule. All the action starts at thursday 04:00 CST.

Additional commentary will be provided by

2GD,

Slasher, and

clampOK. Watch it all at QuakeLive.tv.

"r_picmip <0-16> (default = 1)
Texture detail. Lower value equals higher detail."

16 is max in cpma and qlive.

they are okay, but you have to play in native resolution to get the full 120hz, so 1920x1080, but still better then the viewsonic 120hz, so if you want a new one, i guess it is the best atm, but waiting another 3-4 month might be best.

probably more 120hz screens with better panels and from more companies and just in general more solid lcds with 120hz, those samsung/viewsonic are the first of their gen and normally first gen is waht is to avoid :)

well you can choose from 4 different streams. if it lags its probably your end thats having problems. and even if the streams arent perfect, they are done by people from the community for free. esl-tv is making money so if there stuff isnt working i will complain. but if some guy tries to give us a stream in his free time just because he loves quake, i am not going to flame him even if its not perfect

I had never seen ESL-TV lag. Or, for example, Quakelive.tv VODs which are recorded in much higher quality than the stream, are still working absolutely perfectly for me without lagging/buffering etc. So I'm sure the occasional stream problems are not simply on my end.

Only the Gamesports stream worked without lag, and I've only had problems with streams (and that includes free streams, too) when EVERYBODY watching had them (some early qltv streams\etc) before. I'm not saying I don't appreciate the work and I will sure as hell enjoy the VoDs, but the buffering is what stops me from saying that this event is on par with Dubai coverage.

"Exceptionally covered" was Dubai.
For Dreamhack, we have great people, but the technical part is not the best. Streams are not smooth for everyone, there are no item timers, no camera @ the site showing the players, etc.

The stream is fine, but when i put it on fullscreen it becomes choppy (ustream). I read that its because flash is a shit plugin. Some said that installing vlc and checking off mozila plugin, or installing shockwave would solve it. But that didnt help. Can somebody help?

Don't see how Quake would be more advanced than other sports. If anything, Quake is played at a much lower level than many sports. There is hardly any professional competition whilst football for example has hundreds of thousands of professional players and thousands of schools dedicated to learning football. You are the one saying that you can't compare Quake to other sports because it requires a more indepth analysis. However, Quake is played at such a low level that I hardly find it necessary for everyone to be a pro to commentate it.

Usually, it is best to have one guy who is an expert at the game to do a more indepth analysis while the action is slow and have another guy who is simply good at commentating while some action is happening. For some reason you dislike this kind of setup (which is used for almost every major sport). Of course, you seem to think that people who disagree with you must have some kind of mental illness and start to flame them, so I'll just dismiss you as a troll (and added you to ignore, so I won't see if you reply to this).

Not really, the game was played out years ago and its not evolved very much.

Av3k and z4muz have been doing really good. Stermy is hard to judge but i think he's picking the battles better this tournament and that along with his aim seems to work good. Didn't expect him to beat cypher after he lost bad on ztn.

Cooller is just awesome to watch, amazing itemcontrol vs fox.

Gotta hand it to Z4muZ he was really tearing stuff up. Very wp games, been a huge fan after the game vs czm in eswc 2k4 i think. Amazing for stermy to come back after that loss on ztn, im sure he will go into tomorrows games pumped. It was freakin awesome to have rapha hop on and cast, he pointed out so many things that were really deep and said something I really didnt even think about.

At this point i think it could be anyone's win :D They are all in great shape but damnit i think im going to have to hop on the Cooller bus =) He looks really damn impressive atm.

In my opinion if cooller can maintain this kind of level i believe no one can match him. For me he was the most enjoyabale player to watch for some years now.. and surprisingly he and railgun decided to become friends.. since he never really used rail in the past. Never considered him sneaky. In fact, he seemed to be one of the few preferring to show face and stand man to man, in the right moment of course, preferably with lg. As opposed to relying on peek shots.

But I agree, in the past he seemed to neglect rail like it was a ladies weapon. Maybe he discovered his feminine side today.

There have been other times when his rail was sick too, only during Q4 after WSVG Sweden (where his rail on Galang vs Toxic in the final was sick actually) did his rail get really weak.

cXg vs ZeRo4 on pt4 comes to mind as a great demo for cooller railing.

Right. I didn't mean to say his rail was weak though.

It's just that I recently went through a bunch of his Q3 demos again, mostly from 2007 onwards. And it's been consistently obvious that he never was too keen to even lay hands on rail. When he did though his acc was generally ok.

And it was primarily cypher with his rail aim who might have made him reconsider this tactics. Other than cypher, with coollers superior control of items he could really manage just with rox, lg and an occasional plasma most of the time.

GreasedScotsman did a great job, its not really fair to compare him with 2gd - a man who receives a paycheck and had time to develop his casting skills.

Especially a shooter is very hard to shoutcast and can sound a bit awkward if you lack cast and play experience.

Therefore 2 thumbs up to GreasedScotsman. :-)

Yes, the span system sucks but in this case I kinda disagree.

It was obvious to everyone that z4muz would spawn at RA if stermy kills him. So it would have be very possible to avoid that situation by not taking the frag and gogin to RA instead.

With a randon spawn system, after that kill you could have:
a) z4muz doesn't get ra, stermy wins, noone complains etc.
b) z4muz gets randomned to spawn near ra, wins the game as seen. People call "spawn luck".

So in this szenario I'd actually prefer z4muz winning because stermy did not consider the spawn over z4muz winning because of random spawnluck.

lol most games in dm6 r like that (spartie vs rapha on quakecon??). In more than 80% of the games that had spectate on stream on dm6 there is a short of comeback small or big and always wonder about the myth of not being able to break control.

Yes, but most of the time only a blunder on your opponent's part will allow you to (re-) gain control. Just like in this game.

If stermy hadn't fucked up at YA, allowing Z4muZ to spawn at RA and therefore challenge for MEGA, Z4muZ would never be able to make this, admittedly, sprayworthy cumback happen in the first place.

Of course, that doesn't mean awesome games aren't possible on dm6, but still...
This map is just ill-designed, period.

Naturally every shoutcaster can not be as experienced or knowledgeable as 2gd, but I hope they all would remember that sounds are very important part of quake. If you have nothing "important" to say, dont say anything. Do not block the sounds that might tell viewers why player is doing what he is doing. Nobody cares about your stupid analogies or whatever just because you love your voice or think that you have to talk all the time. This is not your normal sport where everything that is imporant can be seen.

Also if you think that over 50% of the audience knows more about the game than you, as is with many shoutcasters in quake as the audience is highly specialized while in normal sports most viewers do not play that said sport, dont start to ramble about what you think someone should do or what they were thinking, just call what happened. Wham bam shazam is better than completely wrong interpretation of the situation.

IMO this DH should put an end to "timelimit 10 makes for more exiting games bla bla". Most games were over after 5.
Being down 1:10 on ztn after 5 min. doesn't mean too much in vq3 with tl 15. In QL its gg. Or look at cooller - fox. Although cooller may have won anyway, the outcome wouldn't be that depressing for fox in a typical vq3 environment (ztn game).
QL needs 15 min. timelimit more then vq3 ever did.
Spawn system: better for player in control.
Timelimit: better for player in control.
Weaker weapons: better for player in control.
Don't get me wrong, QL is great, but imo it could be even better:)

Most 15minute games are over after 10minutes.

Also, a 9 frag lead on ztn in OSP/CPMA VQ3 is easy to keep for ten minutes, especially when the player is in complete control at the five minute mark.

Yes, exactly. Its the difference between gg after half of the game and after 2/3 of a game.
And of course running away can be done, but is more difficult to do so imo.

5 minutes in 10 = 1/2
5 minutes in 15 = 1/3

9 frags in OSP after 5minutes was a commanding position, a bit less so in CPMA VQ3 but still you can play defensive for a long, long time.

from the player's perspective i'd say this doesn't do much of a difference, and this perspective is what counts first and foremost. also, ztn is so easy to run away, really. you could do this 10 minutes on. a game on vq3 ztn that has scores of 9:1 after 5 minutes is actually over. you'd need a miracle to change this, or a huge skill gap, which is questionable because then you wouldn't have a score of 9:1 after 5 minutes anyways ,)

change the spawn system and TL10 is fine. the biggest issue is that you risk being 4-5 frags behind during the first couple of minutes just by having a bad first spawn and then by suffering spawn rape

i admit i'm a big cooller fanboy but really, he was in better shape than anyone else at this tournament. he did NOT play his best against av3k in the 2nd and 3rd map. he choked after dm6 and that is really strange for someone who has his experience. his ztn vs fox and dahang was light years ahead of what he played against av3k.
