Holy shit, it's been three fucking years. I've always loved Oink, and I always got updates about the courtcase from the website. It seemed every few months it kept getting delayed and delayed. Who knew you could delay a court three fucking years.

It stupid trying to prosecute, the blame lies with the people downloading the files as google does a pretty fine job of finding any program or file you want simply by typing it in and adding torrent at the end. Though I accept it does not do this on an exclusive basis.

The sad thing is, when the law is made to look as foolish as it does in such circumstances it actually makes people more determined to do it becuase it doesn't make sense.

Solution.

Software/films/music have ridden the gravy train for too long, if thye sold stuff cheaper and made it easy to download legally, people would not bother risking using virus ridden software or mp3's.

But trying to get the establishments who have been used to earning so much money for such a long time is going to be difficult for them to accept. I don't see how they get around it, other than take a hit in profits and be happy with making less money.

The advantage to Oink (in my opinion) was I could find ANY album I wanted, and get good download speeds with it. There were a lot of electronica albums I couldn't find anywhere but Oink.

for oink the product was distributing the files. They didn't produce the music themselves.

the costs of running oink must have been absolutely insane, the site was extremely big, wasn't it the biggest private tracker? 300,000 users? I'm sure they would have checked out if he had been spending the money or not. how much was the pirate bay supposedly pulling, 10.000 ~ a month and still operating at a loss.

I recall video footage, he lived in a shitty location with a standard job and had nothing to show for his supposed wealth. in fact, didn't he live with his parents? given how long they had, I'm sure they could have found something.

Sure there's some bullshit in there although it did start as a pet project which grew larger (dc++ originally I think).

As much as Oink rocked, the best thing to come out of its demise was that other music torrent sites gained a lot of new uploaders and became very good :)
