Carmac don`t know what hes talking about that cooller - avek game and the restart. Instead of admitting the mistake , and fixing the rulebook and specifically defining it so it wouldn`t happen again, hes talking how he would do the same thing.

If it's about 'ruining the competition', what exactly is 'ruined' by this? the point of the competition is to find out the better player(by map, by match, by tournament). if cooller was the better player, he would have won consistently. if cooller WANTED to win, and do anything possible to not let av3k win, he would have done that as well. yes, the tournament is there for you, and they should have solid rules (like the one i describe, or the totally opposite), but it will always be up to the players, who are there for themselves, to do whatever they want.

That's why all tournaments have specific rulesets which prevent stupid stuff like this. This wouldn't happen in serious sporting even, this wouldn't happen in any WC3/CS/FIFA tournament with money on the line, either. Unfortunately this tournament had a weak-minded administrator who doesn't understand why he needs to enforce his own rules and why they need to be universal. As a result av3k, cooller, strenx and cypher(who both had a vested interest in the outcome) got screwed. It doesn't matter if it was Cooller or av3k or player A and B in sport Z, there's a reason this is never allowed to happen and it has to do why equality and uniformity in something as basic as match-points is not only necessary but crucial for fair competition. For one, you don't let players decide upon themselves to re-play a match in the semi-finals because you're a populist.

Slightly OT, but did you watch the demo? I mean I'm not that acquainted with t7 but it didn't seem the spawns were that much imbalanced. Cooller spawned in mh room and av3k somewhere at ya/rail. The thing that apparently happened was that cooller did what, to my knowledge, we don't see players doing so often, i.e. going for ra first instead for mh/ya.

In the demo, he in fact said "i went in the wrong direction" when explaining why he got both, ra and mh. Pretty much a lol moment.

I suppose this is debatable.

But the fact is that the restart enabled cooller to reach a better post-spawn situation.
In my opinion, it is not relevant whether other players with the same starting spawns would reach that situation, as well.

How did av3k get put in a much worse position? They both played 10 minutes. Everything was in accordance to the rules until the admin made the call to replay the game for reasons that normally wouldn't pass the laughing test if this was a real tournament. This isn't a situation that occured that doesn't already happen after most maps anyway, one player is frustrated with the spawns. The only difference is this time his friend is cocky and thinks he can win anyway and grants him a rematch. But that shouldn't have been his call to make - There is a rule for this situation and it's always followed universally in all tournament be it football or quake AND in this very tournament: at the end of match you play another map. If you change that then you're changing the rules. And don't you agree how that contradicts with the 4-minuet rule? No rules would've been broken if he'd told them to switch maps and no sensible controversy would have ensued.

Yes, whoever wins the semis in the same way he got to the final - not whoever the players decide between themselves win. That's not fair at all and the result has been tempered with. If I'm in the final of a professional event and I'm watching the semi-finals and the player who I'd rather play wins the first map, but the admins decide (against the rules) that the match be replayed because the players felt frustrated, I'd feel cheated. The tournament is no longer all about the games - the players suddenly have the power to change the route to the semis.
Answer me this, can you imagine Germany would feel cheated if they went on to the final match in the current EC to watch France lose to Serbia - only to have the referee decide to replay the game for no good reason and have France win and advance to the final? If you answer yes then it's true for all such cases, period.

Whether this is true for Cypher in this particular case is irrelevant, no matter what random events occur after a decision is made doesn't change the fact that equality was breached the minute the admin made the call. He's always guilty even if Cooller had gone on to win.

I see the logic behind your approach, but I believe disconnecting both incidents is oversimplifying it.

After all it was not a reset for purely technical reasons, but due to a (however small) mistake from cooller. Even if it was only a mistake by him because the same happened before, so he should have known.

And it is important to note that the game would have been playable despite the wrong timer.
So, the reset in itself gave better situation as he was then less distracted by the timer. That the reset the resulted in a better start for him, makes it a decision that favors him twice, and av3k not at all.

In light of that, I would regard these as special circumstances and allow for a admin ruling.

For red cards there are pretty specific rulings, in this case there were not.

Also, there are cases where referees will hand out yellow cards to give a sign and calm a game down. And also cases where a red card wasn't give because the foul happened in the first five minutes.

That's because you think the rules are only rules when they're written down on the tournament page. The rule I'm talking about is a rule in the broader prespective: the obvious rules of how a best of 5 is conducted, one map after the other with no playbacks in an incident-free game. Actually it probably is written down on the tournament page. If you alter that, then you're changing or at least adding to the rules of the tournament. You can call it "common rules"(as in common law) if you want.

I still think referring some general rule is a bit weak. And certainly not something you should force an admin to obey at all times.

And the point that I'd discuss is, whether the game can really be called incident-free, because av3k and cooller obviously didn't think so after av3k's ragequit.

Admin making sure a best-of-five is played in accordance to general rules is not weak, it's crucial for a money tournament that wants to take itself seriously, especially since the decision affects other players. In my opinion for all intents and purposes this was an incident free game. Nothing happened that hasn't happened hundreds of times before in a Q3 tournament with no rematch even being debated.

If it were Bo6 the first t7 result would have counted in cooller's favor, which it didn't.

The first time they started t7 but reset it right away was also not counted, for obvious reasons.

You know, it's not possible to describe every situation in rulebook, because it's not just objective things that matter, but also how the players feel about the situation. I think, if some unexpected problem "crashed" the player's mindset so that he is not able to concentrate on the game, and both players feel it and agree that it would be more fair to start over with a clear head, then why shouldn't they get a restart?
You seem not to notice that the problem begins not where Av3k ragequitted because of bad spawn, but where he lost his focus on the game after Cooller's first restart (which eventually led to ragequit). Cooller noticed it and offered a replay, because he felt that Av3k's "unfocuseness" after restart was giving him (Cooller) an unfair advantage.
At least that's how I see it after Carmac's explanation.

Yeah. Right there I couldn't tell you guys apart, and I do understand that you might not have been quite prepared for a kind of extended interview.

Still, some of the more interesting game related questions I'd like to have seen answered by cooller is e.g. what he thinks about the 10 minutes games, especially since there's been so much discussion about the impact of initial spawn points right today.

Or, related to that, how much he thinks new maps might be needed, given that ztn proved to seriously suck right today just the same. As av3k described nicely what 10 min games on such maps are about, have a good spawn, keep control for 5 mins and make as many frags as possible then just play defensive.

And, given how forthcoming cooller showed to be, I might even have gone a little beyond gaming. Like asking what else he enjoys besides gaming, what other plans he has in life etc.

On a related note, when you guys got Dahang on somebody of you entirely misrepresented what cooller said. When asked about US competitors cooller first mentioned Rapha, right, but when you came with Dahang he immediately acknowledged him also to be in top ranks. Where you said to Dahang that cooller hadn't him on the radar. Seriously, that kinda sucked hard. Made you guys look like being quite ready to read his maybe not perfect English just the way you wanted.

Regarding the latter, I'd also like to add that, from an European listener perspective, while coollers English might not be perfect it's always clearly articulated and easily understandable. Something I can't always say about you guys American English.

I was able to put this together very late since my normal co-host djWHEAT had a family emergency to go to, and with Carmac's help. I felt we did a pretty good job considering this and got a lot of insight on the event from three different perspecttives. I do agree the timelimit issue should have been asked but these interviews weren't meant to be general offtopic chatter, it was meant to focus on IEM Euro and the upcoming global finals.

On the issue of dahang, yes I did make a bigger deal of it than what Cooller said, but I still thought it would illicit a good response from dahang.

Lastly, although viewers did drop off after Cooller/second half of Carmac, the 1100 to 400 drop was because we were actually on the front page of ustream for a half hour. Then were taken off for somewhere else. Stop talking smack on things you don't know about. Got to promo QL though, wooooo.

Hmmm... I do see where you're coming from, but most of these questions HAVE been asked before. I believe Cooller was asked about the 10 min 1v1 time on LO3 a month or two ago.

Also, like Slasher said, the only reason we had 1000+ viewers is because we were on the front page of ustream. I'm actually happy with the number of viewers we retained after we got off the front page, as 99% of the new viewers we got from ustream probably watched for 30 seconds or less (we had 74,000 unique viewers).

I can understand if people didn't like the questions we asked. It was all very last moment, poorly organized, didn't have questions prepared. We just wanted to bring Quake fans what they wanted. Can you really fault us?

Man, I don't really have a desire to prolong this because I just wanted to make some points which you either pick up in a reasonable way or don't. But here you go.

Regarding the listener count, I call that bs. People who are in the stream already don't drop out because it's taken off some site, and especially not to that percentage They were in the stream, no matter where they came from, listened to the coverage which most interested them for whatever reason and went when that was over.

Now, you obviously recognized that flaw in Slasher's logic above and tried to fix that with some kind of "flux" explanation but, friend, I don't buy that neither. And don't care anyway, because either you get the point I was aiming at or not.

Regarding the questions that have been "asked before", I reckon fresh after another major tournament it might be a good opportunity to ask them again. Because some questions are under dispute pretty much constantly. And as the QL gameplay is still in a very developing state also due to the changes QL introduced compared to Q3, players might reassess some of those changes pretty much constantly and reconsider some of the opinions they have expressed in the past. That's what really would have interested me, coollers opinions with those fresh impressions in mind.

And regarding the "faulting you", there's only one thing where I really was pissed, and that's the Dahang issue I mentioned above. Because it very much looked like an attempt to play that old and childish US vs. Europe theme in a misrepresenting and unfair way, where the players themselves constantly show us that they've risen well beyond that. As Dahang himself obviously didn't want to bite on that bait.

Also, when cooller said "speak slow" you guys could try and make an effort. Unless you think that the largest part of the Quake community is native English speakers of course, in which case it might make sense to rename the domain into quake-live-america.tv or something.

QLtv gets on the ustream front page on a weekly basis, and it always jumps up from the 600-1000. but, if you actually look, the numbers are constantly fluctuating, its just people going to ustream.tv, and usually dies in a similar manner when we ain't on the front page any more.

So obviously, he was suggesting that he had hit a roadblock elsewhere and was working on that.

Now given his history that's of course fucking interesting. Because it might be the very roadblock which makes other top players around that age drop out more or less 100%, after maybe some years of more or less puerile, adrenaline driven success of the I need to be superman kind. I mean, until now we thought it was "the other things in life" which made players drop out, but what cooller said there could still throw a distinctive new light on the situation. And the most fucking interesting thing about it is that cooller himself obviously is managing in making that next step forward, as he's clearly on top of the game again (!) right now and developing.

So that might have been another point I would have been totally interested in, seeing you digging still more in that direction when he came up with that stuff. How did you get yourself out of that hole you mentioned? What precisely was lacking besides practice? Or was it too much practice? What may younger players learn from that? I mean cooller is obviously a resource, a well to draw from, given his history and brain driven game style. And I found the things he said there pretty much awesome, because to me he seems to be pioneering professional quake gaming right now. In the sense of exploring ground which, to my knowledge, hasn't been so much explored before, in the sense mentioned above.

The idioms are the worst. They make absolutely no sense to someone who doesn't hear them regularly.

I knew an arab who loved to use english idioms constantly, it was pretty awesome but it took him a good 15+ years in a primary-english environment to get that competent.

For the MSL one large reason was because the map was T favored and Jaedong did a unique double-expand-off-the-bat build, meaning that Flash would probably scout more and do could early aggression if he replayed the game. If the game was straight up overpool vs 1rax FE, Flash would have easily won on that map.

For the record, this is the first show we've done of this type, usually its just us shooting the shit with maybe 1 or 2 guests, not like it was today with primarily guests. Slasher is used to this shit, but myself and Jehar were sorta thrown under the bus. Not to make excuses or anything.

We tried our best, I hope you all enjoyed it, and I'll take all the constructive feedback I can get.

It was a good idea to do the recap much like after Dubai. Actually didnt think it would have been done since there werent gonna be any LO3 this week.

So Cooller says that he regrets his decision and that he only gave a rematch to avek becaus he is his friend and because he whined like a girl. He also said he woulnd't have given it to any other player. That gives avek an unfair advantage over the other players. I don't see how anyone can still defend ESL decision.

And btw Carmac defending his countrymen with a laughable comparsion with a football game and his 12 year long professional judo referee experience has to be the negative point of the event along with the rematch decision itself.

The penalty kick example is a poor comparison, because it's not like the referee said, "Ok, since neither of you want a penalty kick, you won't have to do it." The penalty had to be taken, but it was up to the player whether he wanted to try to score a goal or not, just like it was up to cooller how he wanted to play in the second map.

I don't think the rematch was the worst atrocity ever commited by man or anything like that, but it does cheapen the tournament. I can't look at av3k and be convinced he was really second best. It's that simple. Its not objective. I just can't see him as deserving second place, that's it.

With that said, I can see why cooller offered the rematch, he did fuck up with config, which is pretty unprofessional as well. What if we start seeing players using this "config" tactic to somehow get match restarts if they think their spawn was shit or something. There need to be clear rules about what kind of restarts are allowed. Something along the line of: your config not quite right and the game has started? Tough shit, that's how you play. Cooller should have been forced to play with the timer counting down and the first restart should not have happened.

I was thinking along those lines, because it really shouldn't happen especially because we've seen him mess up the same thing before. But then, the three timeouts in a row are allowed anyway and break the concentration still enough to make a restart the reasonable solution, especially when it's that early on in the game.

But this stuff definitely can't be handled by players themselves on the spot, given the state of mind they're in anyway. This time you can say cooller got his penalty after all, so we may live with it just as he seems to be, saying that he's happy enough to be in top three. But he should take better care of that in the future, and there definitely need to be rules which especially protect players who got their act together.

Constructive criticism: the hosts of this show were quite painful to listen to (Slasher is always bad, of course, but he was the best of the three on this occasion).

Suggestion: please try to keep your topics more focussed, and think through your interview questions a bit more. You had Cooller for 30 minutes and asked him perhaps one interesting question.

That being said, I did enjoy listening to him, Carmac and Dahang. I hope the show improves from here on!

cooller, av3k and cypher are very even (although cooller lost twice to av3k lately - dh and iem), the only thing i didn't like during this superb event were those stupid haters and their comments like "oh strenx is gay" or "eh killsen is a noob"...
