Wooden houses are a lot cheaper to build than stone houses, that is what I meant.

My parents did actually build a wooden house in the US in 2000 or so, so I have a rough idea of what it can costs, and it's just a fraction of what a stone house costs here.

For some reason that sale price of the house two years later turned out to be several times the building cost plus cost of the land. Bit weird, if you ask me.

I think it is funny that americans love to build wooden houses while the risk of hurricanes is much higher there then in most parts of the world where people build stone houses. Or is it because of the risk they build wodden houses?!

I didn't watch the interview. I just have a few friends in L.A. and they make about double my annual salary, and live very comparable lifestyles (one kid, house in the suburbs, 2 SUV gas guzzlers, etc) and we're about even in what's left over after monthly expenses like house note/car note, groceries, etc.

If you are a little smarter about choosing the place you live you won't have to drive 100 miles to get to a supermarket. So let's say 50 miles per day, that results in 60 gallons per months* -> 180$
I don't know how much energy your appliances and air conditions wastes, so I'm just gonna assume 2000 Watts per hour. (Note: That is more than twice the amount I and my three roommates use for everything except air-conditioning, don't need that here) -> less than 100$
Clothing, let's say 100$ and I think that is a lot per month when you try to save money.

So far, I'm at 680$ which still leaves quite some room for other small stuff people need and taxes and insurance for the car and so on. So unless I made an enourmous miscalculation I think it's pretty doable.

Sure, you won't be able to afford many vacations and you can't go out and get drunk every weekend, but if you want that it may be time to use a bicycle, anyway. Europeans do it all the time ;)

~550/mo for student loans/car payment+insurance/internet+cable
~200-300 for food+travel costs

Don't know much about normal rents in the US, though. The three amounts I know are probably not from average areas (Rhode Island and Long Island) I think it could even be cheaper than 500, considering your wooden houses are soo fuckinh cheap to build, but I'll jus trust you on that.

In the end, I can only see that clothes, energy and fuel are cheaper in the US than they are here.
e.g. a Levi's jeans costs about $125 here, and cheap jeans 35 is you find a cheap sale.
Fuel is currently at about $7.5 per gallon, energy at 20 cents per kWh, food is about the same, except for restaurants.

I lived alone (with roomates) for years on under $1000. (roughly: rent + utilities of about $500, $200 for food, 100 for random stuff, $100-200 for beer, clubs, etc., gave lessons to finance vacations). I did not own a car then, cause you really don't need one here when you are at uni.

Yes, money was always tight, and I enjoy having money now, but it was quite doable and the time was a lot of fun

You're almost completely ignorant about life in LA. Granted you've seen all of 4 different places in America, and I know in Europe seeing 4 whole different places must automagically mean you're an expert, but until you've lived here for at least a few months, you're not really going to get it. It's insanely expensive to live in, unless you wanna live in some shithole like Compton or South Central (in which case, be my guest; if you live longer than 6 months I'll buy you a year's supply of beer).
Not just rent (which on the low end runs around $1000/month), but yes food, utilities (varies greatly from city to city, tho, not just in LA), gas (everyone drives in LA, very few take public transportation), insurance (more drivers = more accidents = higher insurance), etc.
Yeah, I'm sure some things are cheaper than they are in Europe, but overall I'd bet it's still more expensive to live in LA than just about anywhere in Europe (barring another major city like London, Paris, Rome, etc.).

The biggest factor the makes live in the big cities more expensive is rent. Wait, didn't I say something about rent?

About health insurance, I still can't figure out why you people are so scared. Most of the people I discussed that with in the last week were against it. But noone could even explain me the details of how it would work.
So when I told them how our system works.
Simplified version: Everyone pays 14% of their wage plus the employer another 14%. Students above the age of 27 pay 135€ fixed. Family members are insured through their parents (So, if in a way singles like me are "ripped off") But to be honest I gladly pay for families now, cause I know I got the same benfit when I was a child and will get the same when I have children in the future.
That insurance covers pretty much everything, with a few exceptions (some more expensive dental stuff). But everything that is directly connected to health, so a cancer treatment for example. So basically, noone has to worry about it, if you are sick go to a hospital, get treated.

After explaining that, most people said it does sound pretty good. But I guess it really depends on how they really do it. And I doubt you'll be finding that out anytime soon, with that type of political discussion you got going at the moment.

I just described how it is for the average person like me.

Anyway, what I don't get about you guys is that everyone has an opinion like, government wants to steal our money, they want to force us to do this and that.

Well, our government does force us to pay those 14%, too. No way around it. But in exchange you get the knowledge that no matter what happens you and your children will always be insured.

So, what I don't understand is why people say that the government wants to rip them off and doesn't care abuot them, while so far noone could explain to me in detail what the plans actually look like. That is why I gave the example of our health care as an example of how it can work, despite forcing people into a system.

Last but not least, it has been said many times that the actual medical costs are much higher in the US than in other places while the quality of the does not increase nearly as much. I believe this is because the bis health insurance companies like here in Germany have a much better leverage in price negotiations with the hospitals and doctors, than an individual does in the US.
ON the other hand the rates of the insurances are controlled by the government and despite heavy lobbying and crying by the companies don't increase as much as they might on an open market.


So, my advice to all Americans: Calm down a bit and see what you get, you might actually like it!

I wouldn't have a problem with this idea if I didn't have to pay penalties for something I can't afford to begin with. Would it be nice to know that I could just walk in a hospital at any time and get help, absolutely. But can I afford for someone to tell me that I'll be paying (one way or another) for health insurance when I can barely afford to put food on my table with my bills/debt the way it is now, no.

So no, I don't care for legislation that says despite the fact that I have no money for it anyway, I MUST pay some insurance company or pay penalties.

well, over here if you don't earn enough money to get over a certain limit (don't know how high it is exactly) you will be covered by the government. And from what I hear that was the basic idea behind the American refrom as well, to make health care available to those who can't afford it.

Well, if you are uninsured and walk into a hospital needing emergency treatment, they DO have to treat you. So we are paying for uninsured people one way or another (taxes or higher medical/insurance costs). Not trying to start a big health care debate, but that's another way to look at it.

My best friends brotha lives not far from the Bay-area and its pretty cheap. I visited him and it wasnt all that bad. Offcourse there is jungle, corners, gangs and stuff but u dont have to be part of that if you dont want to ...

Generally people say they "own" a house because they've got a mortgage on it and are paying for it - it doesn't usually imply that they own it outright.
Mortgages can easily be more than you pay for rent, particularly for first time buyers (my rent was 550/month before I bought, and mortgage 785/month after).

This is true, and obviously prices for buying land or an existing also will be much higher in big cities.



But since it's impossible to know if he really owned it, as in no mortage, or had to pay mortgage or if the interviewer was mistaken and he was paying rent, I decided to leave that out. I also did not know whether you have to pay taxes for owning a house in the US, so I left that out, as well (but naturally those can only be a fraction of rents, anyway)

And yes, that decision completely changes the outcome, as becomes very obvious by the many replies I got :]

After all, if he wants to play games proffessionally and earn money with it that should be his damn job.

Imagine a soccer pro denying to play when because the turf is too muddy for his playstyle. Imagine what words his coach would use ;)

To be honest, in general I can see safety as an acceptable reason for not participating, like for example the sledders in this year's olympics. Also, personal circumstances or an existing injury or whatever.

In reality that wasn't about safety though - I've seen lots of games played on far worse pitches than that one. They were without a few players and felt that delaying the game would give them a better chance of winning, and so they took advantage of a confusion over the rules regarding safety (it turns out, the refs decision is final in this case, but the ref thought he needed agreement from both teams that it was safe).

As it turns out, they still lost the game when it was replayed this weekend :)

Considering the magnitude of the tournament, a world championship event, by no stretch of the imagination was this stermys fault.

In this scenario we have Cooller playing under normal conditions and stermy under shit conditions. Remember this was a money tournament with player flying from abroad to attend. I don't know what you're trying to say with what it means to have a job but apparently your criteria is "accept whatever comes your way; stfu and play, else be rightfully punished". You just gave me a rule that applies to the online season. There's no rule that directly covers the incident we're discussing. They can use whatever justification they want to class any incident with a universal "at-ones-will" rule but they'd be renderring their rules useless if they'd apply them here. Threatening sanctions under the circumstances where he had got there from another country only to have the first day delayed for hours and his sound fucked on his designated computer in official match play. Does the fact that ESL is responible for their gear to work properly at their event humour you? The players don't bring soundcards to these events, they bring mice, configs, keyboards, headphones. Anything related to these things is trivial for a veteran tournament staff member. If what you say is true and they had the rest of the QL contestant working on the issue that explains alot and therein lies the problem. This isn't about what I can do or what you can do, it's about a self proclaimed world championship LAN providing your contestants with adequate staff to deal with issues like sound or config problems.

All i'm saying, after the nightmare he had to go through on the first day none of which was his fault he should be allowed to leave the tournament without being threatened with fines and bans. He needed to win the game against Cooller. Naturally the tournament was very unpleasant after that fiasco.

if they allow him to leave they risk losing even more reputation both among spectators and sponsors. They would also lose in strength towards the players and I can remember a discussion two months ago demanding they should be more strict with the rules ;)
After all everyone wants to see games, not who can get most forfeits.


As I said before, if stermy was a casual player, I would agree with you. But if he wants to do that as his job, playing his official games should be mandatory, everything else is amateur level. Also, his two wins show that the conditions were not completely unplayable.

Somewhere in Germany. Just because they're pro QL players doesn't mean they know anything about drivers, windows or configs. Would you let av3k, cooller, cypher, strenx near your computer? :) And I would never blame ESL for not allowing the players to try but seriously if that's all they offered as tech support that's pathetic.

It couldn't have been the hardware alone, but some part of his setup as well, either hardware or config (otherwise simply switching pcs should have solved it)

so, the technicians would have to know details of the ESL hardware (duh), and also of stermy's hardware and the quakelive config + engine to know every possible problem.
I think that combination is pretty hard to come by.
