The two changes you wrote aren't breaking competitive play in any way, so I don't see the problem.

The feature itself no, nothing wrong with it per se. But the time to work on stuff like that, and the "spawn protection/armor" crap could be put to better use, at least many think so.

Considering the typical things they typically work on I would consider team overlay a really good addition.

Knowing where your mates are faster than look at teamoverlay dont make you noob, but gives you the opportunity to make certian decision you wouldnt do without this tool.

in tdm i can hear the sounds of a fight and with the new team indicator i can pinpoint where the fight is happening (thus knowing EXACTLY where the enemy is). helps a ton with spam and prediction way beyond it helping the newbs who will be ever more confused.

Come on, it's stupid. Sound is an essential aspect of the game. Newcomes need to learn to listen to sounds or look at teamoverlay. This retarded option doesn't really motivate to use teamoverlay / sound.

Why would they learn to focus on something far more difficult (sound) than focusing on cheats. This is not about hearing the enemy but about not killing your own teammates. How will they learn this if they don't focus on teamoverlay and sound?

imo, for newbs it should at first be about learning to use sounds to kill your opponents. So, they will learn to listen to the sounds just like everyone else did.
They will also have the combination of hearing sound and knowing where your teammates are, so they can learn the connection between that, which I do believe happens subconciously.

So, I think sound will stay a very important factor and this change will just serve as a bridge to that level for new players.

You really don't seem to realize that auto-aiming will not let the player do any active aiming and that auto-strafing would not let the player strafe by himself at all.

oh no, its not just you. The sound in QL is SHIT. If you don't know for certain where your opponent(s) are to begin with, the last thing you need to do is rely on sound, other than to know they are nearby because you sure as fuck can't tell from which direction it comes from.

I have the biggest issues with enemies coming from behind me (particularly in CTF). I can't tell you the number of times I've had guys come strafing at me from behind at full speed and I don't hear them until they're right on top of me. :/

what the new players need is a whole bunch of players who started the game at the same time. there needs to be an easy way of accessing demos and playing them so players can learn and evolve. The reward system does this a small bit but why constantly play on servers where your death to kill ration is above 10?

Strafing takes a while to get used to and people just don't have the time to sink into these games anymore. sj isn't hard to get, it's just so badly explained. also learning it and progressing at it is clearly part of the fun of this game (direct ingame reward from progressing at it. and it's the part of the game where you play against yourself and not other players, less stressful), at least I enjoyed it a great deal

imo the main problem is... simply a hardware one : play a fast paced game like quake at 60 fps doesn't cut it ; and from the average lcd you also get huge input lag and ghosting
these game just arn't enjoyable in these conditions
(also, the other big part : warez killed pc gaming, letting consoles joypads lead the way fps are designed, which means very slow paced gameplay)

then in the particular case of ql, there is the terrible fail of syncerror/id at directing correctly the dev ; so much bad choices, lack of balls, and missing stuff. it could have been so much better (it still can, but who would still believe in it (at least not with the same team directing it) ...and anyway is there still someone to care at this point, even here ?)

Many times i've seen Halo/mw2 console players saying that quake/quakelive looks really fast, cool and skilled. Just watch the youtube videos comments, for example, they are always impressed. Imo, the pb is not that ql is based on a 10yo fps or anything, imo the real pb is that there's not much promotion around quakelive, and most of the console players are pretty ignorants. I mean, they play halo/mw2 just cuz they only know console gaming, they like to play it with their friends, ofc they don't know a shit about quake. Lot of them like to play halo/mw2 competitively online, but i'm sure that if you showed them some quakelive at full graphics (AA x4 and AF x16), HD resolution etc, they would enjoy it. If you show them some cooller's demos with some explanations and help them to learn how to play with a kb and mouse, and then how to straff-jump, you can be sure that they will try to get better at quakelive. But the pb, who's gonna do that ? I mean, kids these days only know console and mw2, and when they know pc gaming, they only know cod4, l4d etc...
