If the hand by Suarez went unnoticed, and the penal wasnt awarded, and he did it intentionaly trying to hide the act, something that we will never be sure, but if you see the photos only a mentaly handicaped player, whats not the case of a world class player like Suarez, could considered that it would go unnoticed, there IF all those facts existed it can start to be considered cheating in football.

An excelent example of "cheating" that even the most football iliterate remember is for example the goal by the number one player of modern football Diego Armando Maradona did, the infamouse hand of god.

More to the point, you were in a discussion (Uruguay vs fairness), were you clearly and openly favored your own side, while none of the others prefer either of the teams. Yet, you claim everyone else is not objective.

I think the USA would be actually great at football if it was a major sport in any way over there. With things as they are only a minority of potentially good players will mature or even be detected by teams for their youth programs.

America spents their "national talent points" (so to speak) on other sports, like american football or basketball or even perhaps baseball.

Think of it as players starting with cs (american football) instead of Quake (football). The player probably would have been a succesfull player in quake if he had some potential but ends up in a major team in cs instead, so that's a talent lost to cs and the nation cannot use him for quake etc.

Football (the international one) has the greatest base of organized youth sports participation in the US. I'm a referee for the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO), one of many national organizations with more half a million players across the country. There's a few holdups though.

Kids aren't informally kicking a football around the neighborhood; America's favorites rule pickups. To them, football is a sanctioned activity with a designated location and time slot. When I ref games, the parents are more into it than the kids are. Also, this world isn't accessible to the poor and/or isolated areas in the US; that's basketball's market.

But why do kids stop playing it after the age of ~13? High school and its warped gender roles education are partially to blame. Youth soccer, by many lengths, is the most popular amongst elementary/middle school girls, but then notions of femininity propagated by their peers and media bring that to an abrupt halt once they hit high school. American football & basketball dominate high school because that's where boys think they can pull girls, and lots of guys weren't allowed to play those sports at an earlier age.

It continues to die off from there. There has been a trend toward growth in the past ~20 years as a result of some heavy campaigning by the national team, but I imagine it will take another generation or two for an international understanding of football to become an American institution.

I think a major problem is the college sports system. In America you play sports to get into college, then if you're good enough you might go professional but if not you've still got a degree.

It's fine for sports where the USA is the big player but when it comes to soccer it's a massive problem.

Yeah, that's definitely the case for those few keeping interest through high school to university. Olympics is likely what the dedicated players are after; even fewer consider professional leagues as a career option--they just want the scholarship to mitigate the cost of attending university.

Most of you just forget about what really matters...

It's not quality players per country/race/whatever: its quality players per MILLION INHABITANTS per country, or something that relates quality and quantity, and you still have to take in account how many people try to play that sport, etc.

Brazil, Spain, Germany, etc have great players and achievements - but they have f*cking millions and millions of people (Brazil alone has 200) who play footbal (at least in their early ages, almost every single guy does) and live football.


China or India have much more population, but they dont give a fuck about football and no one plays it, so obviously they aren't good.

If you take in account that, there are 2 countries that utterly smashes every other country in the planet, in football: Netherlands and Portugal.

The Netherlands has by far the most impressive football output if you ask me, even if sometimes they mess up (WC2002 etc.).

From Maradona there hasnt been a genius anymore. It's about consistency though and Uruguay haven't been consistently high ranked for a long time now, maybe this is the start of something new but I doubt it given the money in the European game (and the large populations of other nations as already stated).

Except money pays for coaching and training, which results in a higher standard of ability.

The situation is stacked in favour of European nations who can afford expensive youth programmes or nations with high populations who benefit from random exceptional players just being alive!
