Need your name on your battle.net account if you plan to pay by using credit/debit for WoW, so unless they start a new account with a fake name, and then just pay with game cards, you're pretty much stuck with this system.

IMO, they should use the nick.identifier system (which WAS in SC2), and then just have all posts on the forums be linked through that.

They should make it first initial + surname if they do want to use the real names though.

-Almost all (or really ALL, at least the ones I remember) games are AWESOME, some are even between the biggest landmarks the pc gaming ever saw (like Half Life 1 and Half life 2; Portal);

-Of course the games have bugs, glitches, etc when they are released. But they still have thousands times less than almost every single game released by other companies.

-Best and cheapest pack that pcgaming ever saw in his entire history (Orange box: 30€ for 5 games that each one alone deserve that amount of money).

-Supporting games like TF2 (that is just the best teambased shooter around for competitive play, and the most fun in pub play) since its beggining, more than doubling the original weapons and maps, and constant additional updates, all for free, in a game which costs 30€ in normal stores, or even 2.75€ in many promotions.

-Etc

So that means they deserve respect and your money?

Honestly, there were games before with much better stories and much more depth to them. All Half-Life 2 had was a lot of hype and physics puzzles.

It's not really revolutionised anything though, it added no more than a few little gimmick puzzles.

NOLF and Deus Ex brought far more to the genre years and years before. Half-Life 2 is just an awkward version of the original with a setting that doesn't suit the mechanics used (the storytelling mechanics etc).

Showing massive open spaces with arbitrary things blocking you from going anywhere else but down a straight path is such amateur game design it's hilarious. The original avoided that expertly too.

I really don't understand peoples love for Half-Life 2, now maybe Episode 1/2 are brilliant, I don't know, I've not played those but the original just didn't impress me at all.

It's like a three out of five star game, that's been whored about as a five star game and now I can't stand the sight of it (or seeing it praised) whereas originally I was just like "eh, it's ok".

One of my friends (he was a console, JRPG kid) recently tried to play through the original and he said he didn't like it. He likes Half-Life 2.

This is incomprehensible to me, I compare it to liking the Star Wars prequels then watching the originals and saying they aren't good.

I was so disappointed in HL2, I wanted proper HL1 continuation, yet I received some headcrab missile launcher, zombie town, 3rd world buggy retardness.

And it gets praised for it's story? What the fuck is wrong with those people? Yeah, developers read 1984, cool story bro.

Still I finished HL2 hoping at some point it would catch up to HL1 I was so pumped up when I heard I am going to BlackMesa... which turns up to be some cave with robot-companion dog in it...).

EP1 was same, but again, I played it to see maybe it would take right turn... yeah. I did ragequit somewhere at beginning of EP2 once I realized it won't be the same and the increasing amounts of retardness I just couldn't handle anymore. Won't bother with further sequels.

I got all the way to the Citadel (or whatever it was called) assuming that the game was only getting started and it would blow my mind away (due to the reviews), then it finished and I was like "huh".

I still rate HL1 way above HL2. I think everyone jumps on HL2's physics cock and graphics when really HL1 was a much better game.

I played HL2 through and thought it was alright. Played ep1, forgot what that was about. Trundled my way through ep2 feeling it was more of a chore that I wanted to see if it went anywhere (and it didn't). Ep3 I'll play for the same reasons probably.

Portal was a much better advancement in gameplay/engine/story then HL2 and was a much better game (even though it was so much smaller). Portal2 looks set to be a better sequel to it's original then HL2 was as well.

HL2 is supposed to be like Lost - I think they even have one of the writers from the show for the story. Each question answered always leaves 2 more unanswered.

Well HL1 didn't really answer any questions either, but it didn't need to.

All you needed to know:
- Did an experiment
- Divided by zero
- Government cover up
- Bloke in suit set it up [probably not a bloke though]
- Get the fuck out of there

HL was more deep than that, but you had to go out of your way to look for it.

in hl2 it was suddenly like:

oh, those soldiers weren't really soldiers, they are aliens thats why they all had masks... but for some reason i rememberevery 5th soldier being some red haired bloke.

Nah, those are different people, the "Combine".

Basically imagine they just took Gordon Freeman, the G-Man, Barney, the Xen aliens and some scientists (that they give names too) then put them in an utterly new scenario and you've got the sequel.

It's "linked" together in the same way that two episodes of Sliders are linked together.

The Vortigaunts (alien guys from HL1) inhabited the border world, Xen, which we were investigating during the events in HL. They weren't really all bad, but were an enslaved race that was being controlled by a hive-mind alien that you kill at the end of the game.

Xen is important to portal technology as a kind of mid-point, and was used by the combine some time after the events of HL when the actions during HL attracted their attention. Shortly after, there was the "7 hour war", which we will likely find out more about, and possibly play through, in a future game.

What 7 hour war?

Didn't G-Man at the end of HL told you to choose between working with 'them' or going all-in in some alien world where you would spawn rounded by many of them?

The war took place a few years before Freeman was returned for the events in HL2, which was 20 years after the events of HL1. Either Freeman was in some sort of stasis, or the gman moved him in time somehow.

The war was referenced to only a few times throughout HL2 - it was when the combine showed up and basically raped Earth's forces. The name "7 hour war" was for how long it lasted before Earth gave up.

There were questions?

So do you know who the gman is, and how he is able to do what he does? Do you know what "rules" he is bound by? Do you know why freeman was chosen for a job? Was the resonance cascade really an accident? Do you know the significance of Alyx in the struggle between the gman and the vorts? Do you know what happened to Adrian? Do you know what happened to the Borealis, Mossman's interaction with it, or the significance of the story connection to Aperture Science? How about the seeding of the advisors? etc...

I never really thought much of the GMan stuff, I figured it was just some lame plot device they included in the first to add some mystery and they just ran with it in the second.

I hope they return to the Opposing Force side of the story, that expansion pack was awesome, I might have to replay HL/OF/BS now...

The gman stuff is the main plot. If you don't know that, it's probably why you didn't like HL2. =P

As far as we know, he was potentially responsible for the events in Black Mesa, is manipulating events throughout space/time, and is bound by rules on his ability to interact. Eli seems (or... seemed) to know who or what the gman is, and Dr. Breen (who also seems to know) gave hint that your presence went to the "highest bidder."

No, I "disliked" (It's more I don't rate it as much as others) Half-Life 2 because the game itself was all wrong, the story didn't even factor into it.

They tried to use the formula they "created" during Half-Life one, which works brilliantly in that game due to the "claustrophobic" nature (it again worked brilliantly in Portal) but in an "expansive' world.

This led to them adding in incredibly arbitrary measures to force the player through the "tunnel" maps and the contrast of expansive vistas and day/evening lighting just didn't work. Alongside this was incredibly standard gunplay.

Of course, it had its good moments as it's not a bad game by any means, it's just not the game every media publication and gamer seems to make it out to be.

There's also just something not right with how they treat their "cutscenes", many other games make exactly the same mistake mind you.

I'm aware of the GMan (and all that you just said) I just didn't pay all that much attention to it as it mostly seemed like a Z Movie plot device that doesn't add that much to the games.

And the worst thing is that they had such great engine to create proper HL2. I remember toying around with E3 leak...

Source is perfect for such military base, laboratory or industrial complex type of surroundings, yet it was wasted on some shitty beaches and zombietowns. :(

I cared more about the story than the gameplay. The "cutscenes" weren't meant to feel personal, as they kept it detached just like HL1.

If anything HL1 was much worse about the on-rails "tunnel" gameplay, as you really had to go out of your way to try to understand the story.

The level design in the original is excellent, it really feels like an underground secret base where an accident has happened, it's falling apart and the military have moved in to cover it up and contain the problem.

Not only that but the the areas are genuinely more complex than the majority of the sequel where you get lots of literal tunnel maps (sewers, canals, roads, beach etc.) and instead of the claustrophobic and lonely atmosphere there was this weird contrast between the aesthetics (expansive, light, populated) and the reality (narrow, unpopulated).

So the problem isn't tunnel style levels per se, it's how they are done.

As for the cutscenes, in the original you basically had none after the start and it felt like the scientists weren't having conversations with you but just giving instructions, this works with the whole detached and silent protagonist. In Half-Life 2 you were literally having conversations in which the protagonist never takes part.

It's a good game, it just isn't enough for a 5/5 for me, my memory puts it at a 3/5 but I'm willing to play it again (like I did Oblivion) to see if I wasn't clouded by too much disappointment at the time.

It's meant to be assumed that Freeman IS taking part, but they leave it up to imagination as to not ruin the character. You don't need your character to have lines to make the game great - see Chrono Trigger.

The complexity of HL1 maps ended at "move this box here so you can get there", or "flip this switch first in order to not die here". At least they gave you interesting new ways of doing the same thing in HL2 - use barrels to float in water to move an object up, use cinder blocks to weigh the side of a board down so you can move across, use garbage to make a path across the sand, use a crane to drop a bridge, etc...

The biggest problem is that it never felt like a real 3-way fight in HL (aliens vs scientists (you) vs marines). You were either fighting aliens, or fighting marines. FEAR suffered the same problem in that you were either dealing with paranormal activity or marines, and you can expect that while one is going on, you don't have to worry about the other at all.

Ah, by complexity I simply meant the architecture not the puzzle side of things. Naturally the puzzle solving in both is at a minimum.

The manner they dealt with conversations just felt wrong in the sequel, there are plenty of games where you never say a word (I've not played Chrono Trigger though, not a fan of JRPG's) but it's only really bothered me in that game.

I remember playing through the expansions and quite a few custom campaigns who all got the conversations/cut-scenes spot on (as did the original). But in HL2 it felt like the script writers had a specific reply in mind but just hadn't put it in the game or told you what it was.

I've not played the game since 2004 though, so maybe my memory is really rusty, but that is how I remember.

The character can't just develop a voice after being silent for the whole first game, as it would ruin it. He's been gone for 20 years, and couldn't exactly participate in conversation without asking questions (which they don't want to answer yet), anyway. For all intents and purposes, you are being dragged along (by the gman, and by the rebels) for the ride.

Yeah, that's why I feel the plot, script and theme of HL2 didn't match the mechanics of franchise (as seen in HL/OF/BS or even Portal).

It's this lack of harmony that breaks the game for me and makes it just a good game rather than a classic.

deus ex? that game was a snorefest, no atmosphere no nothing. quit afer 10 mins of playing. hl2 on the other hand has such a fantasic overall feel to it, not to mention brilliant pace and flow that surpasses anything out there. (ok stalker trashes it atmosphere wise, but it's still fucking brilliant)

TF2 is barely suitable for competitive play. It's been said many times that it's not an accurate representation of how the game is actually supposed to be. 6v6 is the best for the best skill:teamwork ratio but it's a pretty poor representation of the whole game as only 4 of the 9 classes are often shown.

That said, I'll happily play and watch 6v6 but it's really an acquired taste and you'll be hard done to find someone that doesn't play it understand what's going on without a very good commentator.

people always insist that it's all about money nowadays, and everything else doesn't mattter. And from a money perspective, n this case keeping paying customers happy so they keep paying, the choice is very obvious.

Consider the mind of Bobby Kotick, and you can see how it's possible that this could have gone through. Is it worth losing customers for the money from the Facebook deal? Of course, a company that cares about the game/customer would say no, but Bobby Kotick obviously weighed that decision (as shown in the announce post where they said that they expected to lose a lot of posters) and considered it worth it. He didn't anticipate how much bad press he'd get, and bad press is far more damaging to a company than losing out on a deal.

The employees in Blizzard were just as pissed as everyone else was, too. They found out about it when we did, and the ones who cared about the games/company were probably furious.
