Matr0x and Sting are twin brothers. Don't think they can advance out of their groups with such a short notice that they're going and, thus, little practice, but I'm rooting for them.
no cypher current nr 1 and no stermy current nr 3(last big tournament was quakecon)???
So 2 guys in top3 won't play?
Might as well call it failscom.
At least whiner kid av3k will play, will be nice to see him whining about spawn and asking for map to be replayed. :)))
Or telling someone raping him "show me skill" and then when he makes first frag and result is 20-1 he says its true skill.
That guy makes me laugh so much.
Hope he grows up one day and maybe wins a big competition in quake live, instead of a dreamhack or zotac no one cares about.
Please make separate posts for days! I can't post anything once there are about 500 comments, the window to type in text doesn't appear. That always happens. I have no idea how others manage post in huge threads.
When I try to set 200 comments per page and submit changes, the site doesn't save the settings and still shows all comments as one page (checking now with the Quakecon thread). Don't know what I'm doing wrong and why this site works for others, for me it's pretty much broken.
try allocating as much space as possible for cache?
I don't say this is the problem but I had ur problem too in the past and now it works fine -this is the only thing I modified afai vague remember for flvs purpose
I think it worked! 900 mb to cache instead of 50, and I can see a comment window =) It works unreliably, however, yesterday I sometimes could see it, and sometimes couldn't. Puzzling.
I'm trying to get in on the ENC TDM coverage through xou and one of the ESL guys, i can't confirm or promise anything but if they can give us access to the servers then www.levelupyourgame.net (Myself and Disrepute) can provide our HQ and LQ streams with commentary.
Because he will be at Gamescom promoting Bloodline Champions, obviously he can't do both plus he quit ESL TV.
"Through a special partnership with Razer, the world's leading manufacturer of high-end gaming products, Bloodline Champions will be available at both the Funcom booth (Hall 9, stand A031) and the Razer booth (Hall 9, stand B031) where players can either take part in competitive games or just try it out for fun.
Renowned professional gamer James Harding will be present at both booths to provide live commentary on several of these battles, and those emerging victorious from the competitions will be able to walk away with exclusive prizes such as t-shirts, beta keys and even superior computer peripherals provided by Razer."
I've always thought taking the legendary casters and moving them around to cast some show matches of different games would be an amazing charity event.
To the alltimes cryers, cypher wont be but guess what, the other guy that reached the grand finals will. Cypher won qc2k10 because one of the two had to do it, not because hes better than cooller. Different playstiles, same league.
Too bad cooller wont be so inspired with $3500 maximum price. See how with the big prize at quakecon he did pretty well, show cooller the money and he will deliver.
I think Rapha will beat av3k but cooller will beat Rapha, and av3k will beat cooller, so it just depends on how the brackets look after the groupstage and who has to play who in the semi/quarters. Im guessing strenx vs cooller and rapha vs av3k for the semis.
To stay up... or not stay up... that is the question. =p
Man, I am sad there is no Stermy or Cypher. They were both in amazing shape at Quakecon. I will cheer for someone different this time.... go go calipt or Spart1e!
It did work for me for a while, before i got the message "stream not found..." So i think its on your end there is something wrong. Im on win7, ff 3.6.8 .

really? tbh i think its better the other way around, now you need to always watch for a while to see if its actually live or just the video repeating again. each to their own i guess
It's amazing... I think you people should be grateful that there are tournaments of this calibre on a monthly basis! South Africans are lucky to see one tournament a year...
internet is working now, the players have moved to the off-stage warm-up area and will play their matches there. we'll be starting matches at 13CEST! (edited)
I believe Blizzard hands out some kind of offline/LAN licenses for tournaments, not sure if that is the case in this one though, since I don't know if they've implemented it yet.
I'm guessing this is the same fork who called lo3 on sunday because you are asking the same retarded question. Blizzard isn't going to put up a lan server, just like they didn't put up a lan server for WoW. SC2 isn't an FPS where people need 2 ping to register perfectly. If ESL wants to run a SC2 event they better get an internet connection that doesn't suck. ESL had no problems most of the season with their WoW lan events, again none of them on actual lan servers.
well, i believe that would probably the earliest time for an id employee to pop up and fix the lan servers. apparently something is wrongly configured or not updated to the most recent server version, it does currently not spawn servers for this location (you can see the location in the web interface, just no servers)
we try to have it as late as possible to players don't have to play the online version
Streaming video is such shit. It's got low video-quality, all kinds of technical problems and buffering, and it cost like 100x more than GTV. I mean, what do you need for perfect GTV quality? 10k/sec? For full HD streaming-video? 2MB/sec? It's simple: The games should be run through GTV, and everything else through streaming video. In Quake Live, you could probably accomplish this just by using two browser windows. When the game is on, it takes you to the GTV window... when the game isn't on, it takes you back to the streaming-video window. The audio is the same either way, it just switches off the video part when GTV is running.
- Eaten a lot of peanut m&ms
- Hoovered the stairs
- In the process of hoovering, found my old bike pump which I lost
- Watched some defrag movies and found the comments from w3sp interesting regarding his ban and his mouse sensitivity
- Looked at buying a new iPod due to old one breaking (:[ )
I would go out on my trials bike but I don't want to risk missing some matches.
I was considering getting something other then an iPod but honestly, the last one I had lasted so fucking long and it works great, so I can't see any reason to not get another brand. People always complaining their's breaks or some shit. Mine only broke after 4 years and it was the battery that gave up on life
The biggest reason I never got myself an ipod was no FLAC support. An ipod can't play FLAC files even after jailbreaking and has to be converted to ALAC which is apple's lossless audio codec.
ipods are good overall pmp's but nothing beats a Cowon in the audio department. Also, drag and drop a file and play it right out of the box. Couple that with an ibasso d2 boa or a meier portable amp and you have sheer audio bliss.
Yep, very few people can actually tell the difference between a 320CBR and FLAC. Of course, you'll need a good set of IEM's for that though.
I read somewhere that VLC4iphone is an app that lets you play flac. They say the UI is pretty crap but it does the job anyway. Not sure about the ipod though.
Can't open up an iPod as far as I can tell without fucking it over. Have searched this a bit as well. Apparently the only way to fix it is to send it to Apple but also the price of a new one (lol) so fuck that
edit: actually saying that, there's some youtube videos on it, but again, looks like I'd have to butcher it lol Gonna give it a try anyway since can't hurt to destroy it more
my god I can't stop watching w3sp's defrag movies...I've only seen one before and vaguely remembered who was jumping...but now his jumps are somewhat of a revelation.
ESL is in decline, less prize money every season, the events run poorly with huge delays, they loose key personal etc. I think ESL will be gone from the international scene and will be focusing on Germany in 2-3 years.
I hope not, since the economy in Germany in general is recovering slowly but steadily. If the economic recession in general did cause also less prize money, then now with the upturn an increase in prizes can be expected in the near future.
it is the esls fault, they have been there for days so how comes they realize the problems just this morning?
quakecon didnt surprise me but this sucks
they also have problems with the lan servers
but tbh i dont care, they sold me their product (esl-tv prem) and dont deliver at all :(
failcon didnt surprise me but this should be different
I can't say that I'm not frustrated, but I'm willing to give a bit of leeway for problems that are outside the control of esl. The stream has been running for a while now and sc2 seems to be running without a problem, at least according to the staff. If quakelive is the main culprit, i'd much rather deal with delay than the alternative...which would be no quake at all.
Glad that I didn't buy premium for this event and I won't buy any premium in the near future, too. ESL TV and Giga II disappointed me countless times :(
I'm not complaining about octoshape! I mentioned it because I was surprised that a stream using octoshape works so bad. For instance, ESL official stream never lags. So whatever the reason is, it's not octoshape that messed this one up.
Anyway, I watched the rest of the day in VLC, without a single lag, so it's not routing or something that caused bad performance, either.
Man, this is what I got angry at Quakecon about. I don't care about delays (well I do, but I don't get cross about them) but please be fucking honest & realistic about what is going on. Tell us what the situation is, and don't fucking lie and say something is delayed by x amount of time when it's actually delayed indefinitely.
In an interview during a tourney earlier this year, he was talking about people who try to come out tough ( basically armchair bandits ) and said they wouldn't last long in Poland before being shoeless and without a cellphone.
Basically he said Poland is a rough place to be in, and I would tend to agree.
so tell this guy that he should try IE. it cant be that he sits there like homer simpson. and dont try to fix this bullshit. anf if IE dont work also he can try prism..
i spent 4 hours raging at id before i found out about in_nograb 0 (or something similar, at work right now) which saved mine and apparently raoul's day ://
carmac: why has the quality of the premium stream been reduced?
i remember watching dubai last year, and the stream quality being really crisp.. and now i'm watching a premium stream that looks like the cebit free-stream...
tell me how to get esl premium flash stream running in vlc and you're my hero. fucking hate how you can't use dual monitors properly when watching something in flash.
demos are uploaded now, except 2 failed recording of spartie and avek
noctis' demos will be up in 5 minutes, his pc is currently in use and i cant yet access them
"- We want to resolve the issue of having to remotely setup LAN servers for events. It currently takes a lot of time to support these events and limits the number that we can support, and we're unable to support concurrent events. "
Way to plan ahead id.... and it isn't even something minor..
"ok guys I think we covered all our future goals for qlive, this will be great"
several months later
"OH FUCK WE FORGOT THEY PLAY THIS GAME ON LAN TOO"
and no, "we can handle it remotely" is not an acceptable solution if they thought of that. Don't really need to be a IT graduate to see that this would cause major problems.
on the one hand people are complaining about mediocre run tournaments and stream/shoutcasts, while on the other hand player that have qualified for one of the big tourneys of the season just dont show up at all.
If that is representative of the amount of professionalism, then those badly run tourneys and shoutcasts are exactly what they deserve to be honest !
How can anyone demand professionalism from the everyone, while the player themself dont find it necessary to show up at the competitions...that way e-sport will never taken seriously and wil have to live with the mark of beeing a gloryfied hobby....
So you're saying cypher fresh off his win in Texas, not flying all the way back to Germany the next morning means he is 'failing' to keep support for his game....fucking stupid.
Well Cypher not showing is because his visa failed. I kinda can live with that. Maybe all the others got a decent reason for failing to show, but I doubt it.
I've watched a large bit of Morrow demos the last week or so (a much larger portion than content that only comes from the latest Zotac). The guy is a beast. Knocking out other Terrans like they're n00bs.
I personally feel Idra is a tad (a tad) overrated.
I suspect Morrow to beat all Zergs and Terrans, but I think he may run into some trouble with a sound Protoss.
(Edit: and now I've seen an interview a day later where Morrow admits his weakness is Protoss)
Duckload-RA and Huk may take a game from him? I don't know. Let's wait and see.
I think QXC and Morrow would be a really good game if we're dabbling in pure Terran vs Terran, but there is no QXC in this tournament.
Idra is a hard mechanics player, the pressurizing, abusive, and creative play by TLO or Morrow could devastate his flow. But then again neither TLO or Morrow have been in a large tournament.
Yeah I saw that at work a few hours ago. What's funny is I had the demos already downloaded but was going to watch them last because I figured Morrow would steam-roll Tarson, and what's the point?
Just saw the two games, and Tarson put on an ass raping extravaganza. I'm not quite convinced yet that Tarson is the better player, but he was better yesterday and perhaps forever.
honestly most games have been pretty crap so far, HuK choking. WhiteRa just fking up as usual. TLO played solid throughout, MaDFroG isn't nearly at the level he needs to be to contend with the other pro's atm.
MorroW and TLO games are prolly ur best bet, altho they get some free/ez wins : )
the game seems boring. Just clicky clicky clicky, build shit, clicky clicky send troops of whatever race to kill other guy...
fucking zzzzzzzz
There doesn't seem to be any real satisfaction.. Is it that fun to watch your tiny men destroy some random guys base? I mean it's probably skilled as fuck, like chess but dood...
Hitting 3x air rockets on a guy escaping your base with your flag to save the cap and win the game > any goddamn thrill rts games can give
i prefer watching quake as well, but played rts for awhile and it was very enjoyable. unfortunately it's not fun to watch unless you play the game and have a lot of knowledge. i also prefer watching demos rather than streams because you can only appreciate the insane speed and unit control of players if you are following their POV
Pulling an all nighter for this shit so please don't fuck around, I also notice that cooller only gets one of his games streamed, are you joking me? I don't really care to see draven or bodzo play(no offense) instead of cooller.
yeah i know, ive paid for it before (and raged hard) and while they make it look good with the irl filming of stuff, ingame they somehow manage to make it look utter shit :/
I had a few times premium and the quality was really good most of the time. I remember that it sucked for one event but as I said the rest of the time I couldn't complain about it. Don't know how it looks now but they should consider to up the quality from 1mb to maybe 1,5 or even 2mb.
yeah it should be 2mb for premium, and the levelup guys and glhf.tv guys needto teach them how to make it look nice. atm it looks amazingly amateurish :p
edit: keep in mind the bitrate is the same for the glhf stream and esl premium, and glhf looks almost 720p while esl premium looks like youtube 5 years ago on 480p....
yeah i was trolling him when he first starrt playing in tournaments but he turned out to be a very polite guy and hes good too just needs some more time
There won't be any live coverage from eurosport. It will be a summary of the events and each episode focuses on one game/event. I might be wrong though :x
i was sure he can beat dahang if he wont get too nervous
and since hes already got some experience @ the lan he managed to stay calm and play good
hes got some psychological bariers still when facing cooller, cypher or avek but the day he first manage to beat any of them he wont be scared anymore- same situation imo was with rapha now
stemry first managed to beat him a few times (cos he dosent give a shit about how good rapha is) and now noones afraid of him anymore if u know what i mean ;) rapha stopped looking undefeatable ===> anyone can beat him now
Yeah I know I think strenx' a very good player with a lot of potential, it's just that at first you didn't really like him so I think it's nice you appreciate watching him play now :)
wtf? he is still top 32 in eu (and a great team player on top of that). he has already gotten somewhere...
the quake community has a weird attitude towards players outside the top 8 o0
Well, ofcourse i agree with you on his achievements but im talking about duel on top level (which he is trying for anyway). And i dont know if draven plays duel for fun or not, but imo its more about winning money and fame then just competing. Like this he'll get nowhere near winning and will only get annoyed with getting pwned all the time.
oke i normally do not reply to throllers, but just to make this clear.
You want to have 5 duel players instead of 64 i suppose? you should be happy that people actually wanna go to these duel events and fill up the slots, i not that experienced in duel as k1llsen or cooller or even rapha in quake3, i rather play tdm or ctf ofcourse but there no lans for that, i love meeting people irl and the competition and playing on stage is so different but then again some people just stand behind there monitor thinking they can give advice to others while they havent played on highlevel and all they can do it judge other people maybe they envy other people cause they are afraid to go to lans, or afraid of trying.
good arguement , not..... maybe its boring but there also alot of boring games in basketball or baseball or football in any games and still they get broadcasted, not every game can be excited ESL tried to broadcast all games, but since there were delays first day they couldnt, try again.
If you compare strenx's ztn from 3-4 months ago and watch him now play the map you see how much he improved not only his game brain but got overall really strong. He got it to take a big tournament.
uff killsen's aim was way off there, just last week i was wondering how his shaft had increased like 10% in a really short time, and now it was even worse than it was before... even his trademark rail seemed off :/ was expecting better
all demos of today, except matrox', are now uploaded. i will fix those last few when i get access to the pc he used (it is currently in use by a sc2 player)
because the player is playing in the sc2 tournament and i obviously can't and won't disturb him
though, as far as i can tell matrox has deleted his demos or has not recorded any when i got a quick chance to access the pc
Perhaps you didn't understand his point, you Euros sometimes don't understand American English so good. He means its on too early for us in the developed world to watch live, please fix this.
I see a bind quote of Rapha vs Noctis in Blood Run when I watch VOD today(good game). The rapha´s bind says "Zis is Cooller"!
What mean it? It is a joke?
I might be totally off clue here, but i think it comes from ESL game analysis video with Cooller, when he comments on Rapha's perfect positioning and says "Zis is Rapha" several times in a row when Rapha escapes and damages aggressive Cooller's moves.
Kind of like "This is how Rapha plays every time. It's Rapha's style"
"Zis is Cooller" is probably something Rapha says in return.
Mmmmmmmmmmmmno
When Cooller says "This is Rapha" he specifically points out the play style attributed to Rapha, meaning "This is it". He might as well say "This is strenx" and that would not be anywhere near your explanation.
Specifically because cooller, during his analysis of ESL world finals, was able to give credit to rapha where he considered it due. Whereas rapha, in his take, utterly failed to pay any respects.
Example: the prediction rockets at the beginning of dm6. All that rapha could say was that there was "a problem". Now, either he could have said that he's been totally dumb running into them, or that they were particularly nice rockets of cooller. But calling them just "a problem" may be all, it's just not analysis.
One of the reasons why I consider cooller's ESL classics installment way superior to rapha's.
Exept that the 'This is rapha' comments cooller made during the video were clearly refering to rapha's luck. Something like 'I should destroy him but he's so lucky'.
So yeah, respect.
Apart from having no clue what cooller's actually been saying, you obviously don't know shit anyway. Because when cooller means luck he says luck. A host of pro players will testify to that.
really great event esl! great coverage, great casting, almost no delays, streams are fine.
only thing i have to complain about are the german interviewers. theyre absolutely horrible. they dont have any knowledge about the players, ask stupid questions and their engrish sux.
get rid of them! maybe let calipt interview the players. his english is good.
calipt will be there to cast more matches afaik, he told me that after spending some 3 weeks abroad this summer his English is on fire and he that he loves doing it
Semi-finals at the same time? :(
What happened with the "show every game" philosophy? Especially when those are the only two games in the day... ESL was great last year, but this time I am disappoint.
I think Cooller - Dahang will come down to if Cooller is able to play some practice games at 9 before that match.
Most of the times Cooller loses, it's the first match of the day, this has happened once or twice vs Spartie, and Cooller always complains about not being warm.
If Cooller is near feeling his game, Dahang stands no chance at all.
haha. every event he is playing all the time. He had been playing for HOURS already when he lost to me at quakecon. Not only hours but also the 2nd playingday at quakecon.
At gamescom he has been playing from mouzoffice + alot practise at tournament area.
He will be warm enough....
Now I can't decide whether or not to stay up to watch this. It's in the bracket stage which is more fun to watch than group stage games, but stay up till the middle of the night just for 2 games? I don't know about that. What to do...
Great event so far, but the one thing that bothers me ALOT is the serious crappy interviews by the german guy (dennis if im right), to the players after they played their game. His questions are so freaking dull and as far I can notice he has almost no idea what the game is about or what to ask.
Perfect example for this was when he asked Cooller maybe the stupiest question I ever heared: "So will you aim for top8 spot or what?" .... seriously, how the hell can you ask Cooller such a stupid question. Just dump that guy for interviews and let Joe / Calipt & Apollo / Day9 do the game after interviews.
After watching that Strenx interview I really want Strenx vs Cooller to meet.
So
k1llsen vs strenx: strenx wins good rematch for online beat it shit
Rapha vs Spart1e: Rapha wins, good quakecon rematch (last championship)
Cooller vs dahang: easy for cooller
Av3k vs Noctis: The bald battle will be one sided as av3k rapes his emo ass :(
Then I hope it is:
Strenx vs Cooller
Rapha vs Av3k
Can the rest of the Event programmers please learn from IEM on how to setup and run a tournament? Failcon pay close attention to how it is done, night!
yeah 3 hour delay in the first day. Putting adds everywhere u can(rather see a spinning logo).
Boring matches. No cypher or stermy(1st and 3rd). Pathetic prize money. No 2GD commentating games. No ctf. groups+single elimination<<<< double elimination.
Hey quakecon learn from failscom!!!
so whats the best way to record the hfgl stream while i watch esl-tv? want to be able to watch the other match right afterwards
hopefully someone can post a good solution
Can you please explain how to use it properly? I pasted the esl-tv link in the program, clicked download, but the speed was too low, like from 60 to 100 kilobytes/sec. And the file it started to download was 2 GB.
he also displayed 2gb for me but i tried it out and the flv file that was saved actually had the correct size and i could watch the recorded content just fine... speed looks slow but i dont know what kind of bandwidth the freee stream takes....
have you tried opening the file you saved? cause i think you did everything just right
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Octoshape\Octoshape Streaming Services\OctoshapeClient -url:octoshape:tetv.esltv.external + VLC player as standart for Win.
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Octoshape\Octoshape Streaming Services\OctoshapeClient -url:octoshape:tetv.esltv.external + VLC player as standart for Win.
SO IF I TYPE THIS IN CMD THEN it will record glhtv stream to an avi or what?
http://www.youtube.com/user/ShiftyReflex
heard the beginners guide videos are quite nice, maybe a bit too specific, but i dont know a better site for explaining the basics
Yeah I want to see both games so badly I think I'm gonna watch them simultaneously.
The schedule doesn't allow two games because the exhibition is closing early and they also have the ifng+sc2 games.
will upload the file directly after the match for anyone who is interested, any prefered hosters?
(i tried it out once and it worked, but no guarantees)
oh, nice
will you also going to upload the quarter final immediately? then it wouldnt make sense for me to upload the flv file if you are putting it on youtube anyway
The infamous spectator bug, when one player suddenly joins spectators for no reason at all, and it happened several times before in tournaments (last time it actually happened just a week ago at Quakecon when link1n jumped into specs in a CTF game). id software has done a good job of not fixing it already for more than a year.
Slasher, man, I know you're alone on the stream, and you seem to believe shoutcasting is about always saying something, but describing the action is totally useless and annoying, we're not blind
In this event in addition to your usual "does <smth>" you got a new bad habit of unnecessarily using words this/that all over the place. "Takes this mega", "got that railgun", etc. Plz make your words more meaningful, don't just try to fill the silence.
Are you sure esl and the smaller organisations like glhf that use blip.tv are happy about you putting THEIR vods in other places?
Some of these organisations like GLHF spend a large chunk of their day streaming for free, and although i can't speak on behalf of them - they make their small amount of money to help compliment that by their viewers watching their vods, and i personally do not think it's very ethical of you to do what you're doing.
in general i have to agree with you, but right now, i just wanna be able to watch both quarter finals... esl-tv and glhf should have found a way to ensure that we get to see both. (delaying the glhf stream until the one match is over, uploading vods immediately or whatever)
Ahh, so this is why some events takes forever to release their own vods and demos. Sometimes they wont even release any demos just beacuse of the reasons you state in your post above. Nice!
they take forever to upload the vods and are usually at completely shit quality (compared to the stream which wasnt the best to begin with). this guy uploads them fast and in an easy to find place on youtube. maybe they should hire him to rip the stream remotely and upload the vods since im guessing the problems they have in getting them up stem from having shitty internet at a lan event.
another thing is its easy to load up his playlists on youtube and watch vods in order without getting spoiled on the outcome by coming here for vod links or going to the esl site.
Good point. Being more analitical, if i remember correctly, i was posting as anon, even entered the verif code, but then the post was shown with my nick. The authentication was done between the reading/posting, thus showing me as a logged user, but having seen the unlogged timezone. Is this correct? If these is the case, why not implementing that in case the user isnt logged, show the timezone associated with the country metatag?
strenx hit 28-31% lg in these games, and in gerenal wasn't hitting many easy shots, clearly he wasn't warmed up as he said in interview.
IMHO he would defeat k1llsen quite easily if he had proper warmup.
btw your casting got batter, but you need to talk less...
instead of saying "noctis takes the yellow, is not at 100/100 and goes towards the mega now" i would make it "noctis now at about the same stack as av3k. <silence>"
just focus on the game situation and not constantly repeat whats happening, make pauses. dont wanna sound too negative and i like your enthusiams and general flow, but this would benefit your cast imho
you have to re-prioritise the happenings on the screen:
you keep talking about who pulled what shot off, with which weapon, and who picks up which item. because of that, you barely have time to talk about stuff, that spectators cannot see.
instead of "... and noctis hits a nice rail in the face of avek"
you could simply say "noctis hits a nice shot", because everything else is redundant/apparent.
i understand that in the heat of the moment, it is not easy to keep talking, while only saying meaningful things. but you might want to consider a trade-off:
instead of "mindlessly" describing whats happening- a thing that you do fluently and you seem to have no problem doing it for 10 minutes straight- you should mix it up a little. be quiet for 5 seconds, and take these 5 seconds to come up with something the players might do in the next 30 seconds(or whatever).
didn't want to sound like an ass, i just think you should work on your casting or stay away from it :P nukm and dansen said pretty much everything, so i'll just repeat that this isn't radio, and we really can see what's happening on screen
08:00 GMT, 21 August 2010: United States of America rapha vs spart1e Sweden (details) @ ESL TV

It must be really difficult when you're organizing a 16 player tournament to have the finals played at a proper time.
edited: the above schedule is wrong, it's actually 8:00 and 8:45 so that's at least good.
they've often done good at showing the maximum amount of games, though this tourney is different e.g. the quarter finals today was played simultaneously. but they always have the playoffs at ridiculously early hours, even when they only have one or two matches for the day.
Just wanted to say I woke up early to watch the games and instead they showed starcraft.
Now, I don't know anything about starcraft at all but I watched TLO vs MarroW terran vs terran i guess and with those shoutcasters I actually understood most of that shit.
They are really really good at casting starcraft, probably better than 2gd casting quake (to newbies)
Also, it seems starcraft has a variety of strategies and a whole different set of skills than quake has. Looked interesting but complex
yep, massive timing skills altho much more complex and cool than quake's +25, +35 timer shit. these guys know how long it takes for stuff to build, which enemy units/upgrades are coming and when, so they know when to push, when to retreat etc.
Different skill sets for the games, they are not comparable.
Both are the absolutely pinnacle in terms of competition, gameplay depth and skill ceiling of their respected genre however, and are equally awesome in that regard.
Definitely is interesting and complex. The level of play in South Korea for BW (the first SC) is probably the highest level of gaming ever, for anything.
SC and Quake are the daddies of pro gaming, no doubt.
I don't know the name of the guy casting with Day9, but Day9 needs to cast with someone with less gab. In a perfect world casting should have one expert and one person who compliments that expert.
As it is now, it seems we have two knowitalls fighting for time to give their commentary and analysis. I don't think the two of them work so well together, but they may feel differently.
Match going live on ESL. Does Rapha even practice at these tournaments before his matches? It seems he goes in cold, but maybe someone can tell me how it actually is.
There was a guy describing some players routines at quakecon, and apparenty Rapha and Cooller like playing all day long in between official matches at tournaments if possible, so you can be sure that Rapha is playing plenty.
questionable?
spart1e pushed so much because he wanted to avoid a slow and tactical match. no on the first to map it worked out really well and rapha never really found his game.
on dm13 rapha got back by playing quite flawless and on bf he just seemed more experience
ztn was anyone game until the like 6min when rapha managed to take the lead and with some unfortunate spawns for spart1e he, the lead was so big that spart1e just had to get a bit desperate in the end
btw glhf tv, you're often speccing the wrong player, eg. talking about cooller now and his state, while speccing dahang.
and slasher goes "yeah lets switch over to cooller now"
....
no, still dahang :D
Not a huge difference in LG. Check the rails while you're at it. Not to mention Cooller outdamaging DaHanG 2 to 1 in every single rocket duel (especially @ RA in t7.)
12:45 <@Kennigit> Statement of NaDas early GG:
12:45 <@Kennigit> The Event should only be streamed in Germany as a local showmatch.
12:45 <@Kennigit> NaDa was FORCED to GG out, because someone was streaming the showmatch on Afreeca (a korean streaming software). The KeSPA forced the people to stop NaDa playing any longer.
hm i'd be cautious in his stead with this stuff, after all hes from poland - the motherland of antisemitism with the occupation from the nazis, soviets and now radio maria
not rly want to satisfy stereotypes here but people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
I remember watching a showmatch between Fatal1ty and various audience members in Quake 3 or 4, on a crazy platform map in space, and watching Fatal1ty use the railgun was absolutely mindblowing. Headshots galore with both players in midair... remarkable to witness.
but it seems like they enjoy it
Dude this game looks insane. I've never been into Quake but it's damn exciting.
yes and he deserves it, he played well in so many tournaments but it has been some time since he really managed to get to the top. and considering he doesnt have much time because of his job, wife and children, its really impressive... not much of a k1llsen fan but im still glad for him
dont know what his fake account is (if it exists)
but considering the life that a lot of the other quakers are living he has comparably few free time i would say
Wow didn't think k1llsen could come back after that horrible plunder in the 1st map. Looks like he comes up with these upsets every two years or something (ESWC 2008 finals were almost exactly 2 years ago).
cooller pretty much considers this match with rapha the final. it'd be funny if cooller beats rapha then gets steamrolled by k1llsen in the grand final
Rapha would be better for k1llsen, because of his weaker lg and rg. I doubt that k1llsen can win vs cooller. But well I didn't expect him to win vs avek either so :=)
i was thinking the same thing. and then Cooller comes in from the lg side and rails him ahha. i was like how the fuck did Cooller get there so fast?? he totally confused Rapha.
What about the last encounter where Rapha raped with lg?? Cooller said it was not smart. Can someone defend this thinking? I thought it was definitley smart if RA was going to spawn. Rapha was trying to keep Cooller out but Cooller wouldn't budge so Rapha had height advantage too.
Cooller just lacks some dictionary. As a russian person I bet he ment 'not smart' = 'that place was obvious to camp and almost nobody would be there, especially at the end of the match'
It was so stupid that it became smart. If cooller had lg out he would have destroyed rapha and then no overtime for him, but he surprised cooller so much that he got confused as fuck, and took a lot of damage from raphas lg.
Rather stupid from cooller to force a kill, because he had map control and rapha could take the 50 bubble. Cooller just didn't expect this and as he said he was a bit nervous. Imo he shouldn't +forward into rapha's lg and give away the game -_-
Immediately after t7, when the camera was still on him, he turned to the other guy and slapped his forehead as to say "how dumb am I today to get caught like that in the last second". He must have felt like a noob.
And that's clearly what he's been referring to when talking about not being "smart". How somebody could misread that is beyond me.
cooller saying it was not smart for rapha to be there on t7, those last few seconds.. well lol, turns out it wasn't smart for him to go there in the first fuckin place.
I've figured it out! I think rapha must have wanked before Quakecon so his mind wasn't 100%. If he didn't wank he would have dominated like he always has!
Not trolling. He's so stupid to lost that T7. He had 200/200 and what rapha had? Position. Unbelievable.
Cooller will say that he's unlucky again and everybody else was lucky (this time rapha) and his fucking mindless fans are going to worship him anyway whatever he says. Stupid zombie cunts.
this is a game I would love to have Rapha explain, mainly that last minute when Cooller was
coming out of the walls and hitting from everywhere and then the last fight where Rapha had
position and nothing else.
CARMAC, you know what to do. And have both Rapha and Cooller on set :)
must be. especially the last RA fight at the end of dm13, that was pure knowledge. it takes god knows how much practice to calculate how to survive with 1hp and act like it's normal in a interview afterwards.
rapha is a great guy, but his luck was obvious. he sweated on battleforged for 5 minutes for fucks sake.
The t7 ending is a prime example, him being well stacked and knowing that he got item control for the minutes to come and not really paying attention anymore.
He should hire somebody, to slap him into the face 3 times before each game, just to freshen him up and get him on alert.
You make it sound like it's a accomplishment for Cooller to make Rapha sweat on battleforge. They both had exactly the same amount of time to practice the map, but If Cooller is too lazy to "care" and then gets owned, thats his stupidity. How the fuck do you expect to win tournaments like that? Or do you think they should award him the title just for being Cooller?
Just goes to show the twisted (cooller) fanboys logic
raphas close up RL is awesome! he has started to make a few little mistakes though in his games.
soon as i saw rapha in the last few secs i thought cooller would have pulled back and taken it into OT but noooo he goes running in. amazing rail from cooller though on t7.
oh and that german host guy, i understand english isnt his native tongue but he just sounds like he doesnt know what the fuck hes on about.
imo, the main mistake of cooller was delaying that last RA on t7. Because of this, rapha could get a YA and obviously rapha with 110/75 and position can win against a surprised cooller with 190/170.
Also: After hitting 20 (!) rails in the last 8 minutes of t7, cooller missed the crucial last one when rapha was going up the stairs from the YA.
Too bad. I don't see killsen having a chance against rapha. :|
edit:
The initial burst of rapha's LG brought cooller down to 160/80 before he could reply with any damage. Thus, he had a stack advantage of like 50-70 and decided to attack from his inferior position. What a mistake. :|
I just watched ztn and it seemed weird to me. So many times rapha could not hit him, especially with mg and from close range. I watched killsen's health and remained the same, like no bullet could touch him.
I had the same feeling with the other players he pld as well, like strenx, who could not hit shit against him. I don't know. He either became the utterly best dodger in the world, Houdini level, or something isn’t right.
and no his aim wasn't that impressive, he missed many easy rails.
TaKe is a nice, guy but his english sucks and he doesnt know anything about quake. he is the wrong guy for the job, but lmao@this internet bullshit of saying he is a retarded twat
Dude, I know that guy from the wc3 scene and he was one of the most BM players ever, crying about everything. I'm not calling him a little twat because he looks like one, but because he is one.
Well, they're not really "babes". Maybe one way to resolve this is to actually find some attractive girl gamers who have tournament experience and have them play the stage babes, because their interest and involvement may perhaps be genuine?
To be fair, it was funnier last year when they had that one girl wearing the weird yellow/black PVC catsuit thing lol. She looked genuinely disgusted and hateful :P
This year I'm surprised the Razer peripherals haven't broken when they threw them in a crowd ;]
I was today in cologne and the event looks way more attractive on stream than on rl.. brainless zombie nerds all the way.. kinda funny though.. but very annoying
Exactly the problem. It's a 'commercial convention' rather than a sports event. No one likes commercials, but everyone likes eating, getting drunk and watching sports.
killsen vs strenx and obviously the bronze final were pretty boring. I'd recommend all other playoff matches, especially rapha vs cooller and dahang vs cooller.
IdrA is one big sociopathic robot. Crowd song a happy birthday and he just stand still there like nothing and kept his face. Only good about this guy is his race selection. :>
With the powers of Wikipedia and reading one psychology book I diagnose IdrA a mild form of schizoid personality disorder! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schizoid
stermy is different, he is the "american" killer.
oh and insane luck by rapha(BF was only deserved one)
1hp on dm13(tell me a single time cooller fraged rapha on dm13 or t7 with 1HP on this match?)
and on t7 that last 2 second kill was complete fail by cooller which isn't understandable since he was aiming well throughout the game then on last 2 seconds he makes fail aim.
Its no so much thanks to rapha playing well that he won, but because cooller aimed bad or was really unlucky on crucial moments.
Anyway was a close game on every "old" map.
Was gg could have gone either way.
ye, the final games are not my fav pics tbh. cooller vs avek will be like a warmup game, and i think rapha will be able to read killsen. any other combination would be more entertaining i think.
Remember when Cooller treated t7 like he treats battleforged now? He really needs to get over the new map QQ, he'd do a lot better if he put the effort in straight away.
If it wasn't obvious to everybody that both players were playing well, then, I don't know what to tell ya. Rapha maybe got the better end of the deal a few times, but so did Cooller. Recall the first spawn on Battleforged. Recall that Rapha actually had to play great games to even win. Recall that a match is ten minutes with practically every second of game time being relevant.
Out of all situations you pick one situation or two and focus on it and then rationalize the loss to bad play by Cooller instead of good play by Rapha.
They are so close in skill that it's easy to fall into that trap. It's the end of the game (you think), nothing that came before matters now (you think), and so everyone just focuses on those moments and make grand sweeping statements about luck depending on how those moments go.
I think Cooller had HUB wrapped up though. Practically an automatic win for him if they would have played on it.
Yeah I see your point. But still... I've been drinking tonight, a little hard to recollect the details, but I still feel as though Cooller would game Rapha on Hub. Get back to me during the next tourney. We can hold a little side wager. :) (just for fun)
I find it easier to stay awake until 3 or 4am then to wake up at that time, hit a late night movie and brew a pot of coffee when you get home and next thing you know games are starting. :p
Of course, I think he is a real talent. If he's been playing DM6 since he was 16 he'd be raping everybody on that map. I think it's a shame we don't see more of sander.
He was nice enough to hook me up with Painkiller demos when he was on top and when I asked for them. Good guy.
Besides his CPM game is amazing. CPM > Quake 3/Live
finally.....intelligent Americans do exist. thx for not being a "i'm proud to be an American because someone else does perform well in a tournament-fag" XD
We're all over the place. You just gotta look. Keep in mind I'm in my 30s.
Let's be honest: national pride is paramount for most people. Observe the Russians, whether it's Cooller or Fedor. In addition, American culture is completely different than most European countries.
I think this misunderstanding and ignorance of culture is what divides the nations. In truth, if everyone grabbed a beer and just shot the shit and spoke to each other in their language (perfectly), nobody would know who's from where, and we'd all be buds.
Vo0 actually is a good and fair guy. I don't give a rats ass what anybody says. That's fact. The n00b who's posting about his GF and all that shit... that's some weak shit. Vo0 has been programmed to play CPM and to deprogram those habits is what accounts for his (somewhat) difficulty in his transition to the ultra defensive Q3.
Ahahaha..did you notice how the other girl kept on moving like she was about to rape k1llsen with her height advantage? On a side note, I bet those were some cheeky skullcandy headsets.
Grow a brain ESL or whoever is on charge these kind of players cant be urged to play without warmup, leave some time in the schedule for it, its mandatory in order to get the best of a player. 5 mins warmup min i would say, 10 ideally.
the players have plenty of warm-up time (~1 hour), some just choose not to show up as early as they can get in and then complain that they are given too little time to warm up when they only sit down at their PCs to set up 20 minutes before it starts... (none of those who are playing today are among these though)
*edit* oh, you meant the car scenes? those were recorded at an earlier point obviously...
Thanks for that info but i know that. I agree if the player doesnt show early its his problem. I wasnt talking bout the cars either. No matter how much time you "pre warmup", when you sit in the definitive place where youre going to play, you need average 5-10 minutes to get into your game again.
If you would have listened more carefully, Joe said they had already been warming for a while. That car sequence was recorded earlier, they didn't get out of the cars, do the i-view on stage and then jump straight into the game.
could rapha get any more luck with the spawns? killsen kills rapha, he spawns 2 times on his ra, 1 time on his mega. izi to win like that, show some skills rapha, not luck (like that 2hp kill)
btw, calipt commentary on fire today as well. think esltv should hire him.
Stop whining about rapha getting lucky. It wasn't luck that killsen was walking openly in the opposite direction and rapha was aware enough to notice/punish it with nice rockets. Rapha's rockets are deadly, it's not luck. His in-game awareness is incredible, not lucky. Where is everyone complaining about killsen's luck surviving that game-deciding fight with 1hp on battleforged in overtime. You guys are just haters. :(
My flag doesn't have anything to do with it. I always pull for cypher! But rapha is a class act, and it's kind of lame for everyone to claim that it's luck every time he hits nice rockets and catches killsen off, but when killsen survives a fight with 1hp that decides the map no one mentions luck. If anyone was lucky in that bo5, it was definitely killsen. Between that battleforged frag and all of rapha's crappy spawns on ztn, there was plenty of good luck going in favor of killsen. But on aerowalk, his aim was just too insane for rapha to do anything with. That was a dominating performance. But killsen's aim was pretty much ridiculous. good games, but I just hate to come here and see everyone try to denigrate rapha's performance for no discernible reason. Nationality has nothing to do with giving due respect to players who earn it. GO CYPHER!! :D
Rapha hit some really nice rockets and caught killsen off guard a lot, outpositioning him/predicting, which is pretty much why he was able to keep it this close, but GOD killsen's railgun and shaft are so good.
On a side note, how obvious is it that ESL Joe is rooting for killsen big time? :D
And as far as rapha being "lucky", hahahaha yeah right. His spawns are consistently AWFUL after dm13.
Joe and 2GD are obviously anti-american. We need to remove them and put in someone more neutral that does what casters are supposed to do - CAST the game.
I definitely don't think you're anti-american. Haha that's insane. I just mean try and remain neutral when casting. You were so happy and excited when killsen would get a frag, but when rapha did, you sounded really bummed. :P
By the way, calipt did a fantastic job from a spectator's POV. He seems like a good replacement for 2GD.
Excellent show. Got up at 5am and dont regret it a bit. Amazing grand finals, great casting, calipt+joe was rlz. Grats k1llsen czm style rails just learned some new angles on hub lawl, awesome guys thanks.
That was so good to see killsen enjoying himself so much. Respect to rapha too of course, he's a champion & he always carries himself well. Awesome event!
nice final
can't stand national preference cheering crowd
Joe sidekick knows how to kill enthusiasm (last 3-4 minutes of a game, quite big lead, betting it's over)
each to their own, but I like it when the commentators are honest . pretending the game is constantly at some sort of intense pivot point even when it's 99% over just annoys me. Joe & Calipt did an awesome job in my book/.
A real commentator wouldn't do that indeed, but calipt is a player asked to help commentate so it's an obvious mistake.
It's a mistake toward the not so much knowledge about QL duel crowd though, but for me it's always annoying when they are still being excited while it's certain who will win.
a bit? :p I would say alot. I was laughing so hard at it. Coming in with two models under his arms and that tacky ass music playing on the stream(was it playing live too?)... it was so ridiculous :p And then carmacs fail at getting some shouts from the audience was a bit sad. Not his fault though, boring audience :(
But they need to change the presentation of the winner. Lose the girls and the tacky music. Maybe let the player pick his own song. If they want the girls then lose the Intel guy and let a model give the check to the players.
Anyway, GG wp k1llsen! Now i hope i win some prizes from razer because of the correct prediction!
k1llsen so deserved it. Congratulations.
Europe does it again 2 times in a row :>(quakecon and gamescom).
When will America come back to get gold :'( ?
What excuse does rapha have this time?
Rapha and DaHanG are so weak at aerowalk. They should fix this quickly. I think thats because they dont play q3 too much, and they are "new" players :)
Great show again was delivered by esl and intel. I was a bit disappointed after the group stage matches but the play-offs and the especially the final made up for everything :=). Good job carmack
killsen's aim was pretty intense. rapha got pretty lucky on d13, but then was unlucky after that for the most part. ztn was quite unlucky for rapha, but killsen was on fire regardless.
I don't think Rapha was THAT unlucky with spawns on ZTN. First spawn fair enough, but all the conversion frags were from k1llsen speeding over to the most probable spawn location. Just great play from k1llsen.
Both, I think. Sure Killsen gave himself every chance to get those spawnfrags, but I reckon if you ran the probabilities it would be pretty unlikely for his educated guesses to be right as often as they were.
Cypher had great aim sure but he almost missed alot. The first however many minutes of Aerowalk in Cypher's final was awesome, but the WHOLE ztn match for k1llsen was just flawless.
Finally, an event that was well organised! Demos of the matches almost got uploaded immediately after the games finished. What more can you wish for? Well, for starters a decent stream and not a commentator that barely knows Quake at all...
wp k1llsen and just deserved...his play is like a transmutation of Cooller's dead-on rail with "Rapha 2.0" defensive smarts! Evolution before our eyes!
Great job to the admins and organizers for an extremely well run tournament. Quakecon doesn't deserve it's "major" status. It's sad, really. Sponsors should gravitate towards Gamescom.
k1llsen has for sure improved his shafting, but i would still not say that he has a great shaft, for that he fails too often in shaft-shaft battles at far distance with small dodgings. but nevertheless no more need to fear shaft battles.
as for rapha, he is sure still one of the smartest, but others have stepped up now also and now his average aim with shaft and rail gets him fucked.
Honestly I think rapha should use a less extreme config. He has a HIGHER sens than cypher AND .48 accel. wtf? I mean I'm sure he uses that because he barely have to move his hand and he finds it more comfortable, but I think it's time for a change. I'd love to see rapha come back with monster aim AND his obviously awesome awareness and brain game. As others have said, otherwise I see rapha losing more and more, his aim simply isn't up there.
[17:40] <sputnik> well currently we dont have any way to play
[17:40] <sputnik> because our lan server does not work
[17:40] <Trance`> and u cant just go online?
[17:40] <sputnik> and connecting to the same internet server does not work
[17:40] <Trance`> hah
[17:40] <sputnik> as soon as a second client from the same ip connects
[17:40] <sputnik> we get permanent timouts
[17:40] <Trance`> i have heard of this problem before
[17:40] <sputnik> on those clients
[17:41] <sputnik> we cant find a fix for that
[17:41] <Trance`> no ID tech guy available to help you? the ones who set up the lan servers etc
[17:41] <sputnik> we are trying
[17:41] <sputnik> but you know where they live
[17:41] <Trance`> yes...
[17:41] <sputnik> timezones are a bitch
[17:42] <Trance`> :/
once we had things properly set up things worked out smoothly, big props to our friends at id software for being available early on Sunday morning to get our server up and running just in time :)
rapha was very unlucky there on ztn but killsen would have won this anyways just by railing rapha to death
great performance
i was a lil bit upset that he won vs strenx so easy and strenx was obviously not warmed up but when i saw this final im sure he would defeat him anyways
i got so much respect for him now when i know hes got a wife and a kid and a full time job and he is playing quake at the same time with sucha gret succes
Morrow and Idra are quite geeks, Morrow less though he's shy prolly, but man Dimaga PWNS da house! He's a really nice guy and man, he plays zerg like a mad man.
Props to Tarson and DeMusliM for nice attitude towards everything.
Seems that 4k^dk will be commentating from the event in German for a later VOD, atleast that's from looking at the private server list, so we won't be able to provide you guys with the livestream!
If you want something to watch in the meantime, the semi-final with sweden and france is here:
Hey guys, we're going to be interviewing k1llsen and MorroW LIVE on Weapon of Choice and Live On Three starting at 20:00 CET/2:00 PM EST at http://www.djWHEAT.tv - tune in!
Maybe so. But other games, such as CS, were available to spectators by other means. But we have no GTV so, yeah, uh well...
As demos are already uploaded to the ESL site, I have little to no interest in a VOD.
it's not just k1llsens hitscan aim. it's also his movement, his dodging, weapon selection and his selective aggressiveness.. fully deserved win. And of course smooth tourney yet again by ESL.
I find it impressive how much he's grown as a player since last season. Remember his ridiculously defensive style? He made T9 an utter bore to watch. Now, he's actually being attacking and chasing to very good effect!
what really surprised me was that rapha fell into every k1llsens trap on ztn..really weird.:S if cypher was participating result would have been different tho.;)
great atmosphere at the final, great games and a personable champion
the whole thing was great and professional looking event, but when the checks came in it was quite awkward, the should have been another zero added to the prizes
Yea, prizes were ridiculously small. What is 3.5k $ for big company like Intel. They hire thousands of people all over the world and they pay more for each of them every month.
man rapha can't win a game on aerowalk vs serious competition since it came into QL. He used to trash teir one players like tox on it when he wasn't nearly as good as he is now, what happened?
I've just started to watch VOD's and oh my god. Silly girls, the belt should be wearied on pants or a fancy skirt not on your naked bodies. Silly girls.
