I hadn't ever touched a Civilization game until V, and I've only played the demo (due to how much commotion was being made about the game), but I can't see what the big deal is.

The game is mildly amusing for the first 30 minutes, and then devolves. About the most fun I had was crushing some Egyptian bastard who had previously insulted the culture of my nation.

It's like crack to me for some reason..

Just finished a space race victory as arabs, DOMINATING WITH THE OIL MONEY. Also: Battleships vs swordsmen lmao. Gonna go for second game now, as some other civ with some higher skill than Warlord.

Just finished my first game on chieftain and won easily ( bombers vs elephants in the end ). Will work my way up with the difficulty settings though! Anyways I really like the new combat system, no stack of doom anymore !!

I loved Civ1(or 2, don't remember) back in the day but now with SC2 out, there is no way any strategic type game will take time away from it.

Well firstly, you should upgrade.

I used to play civ 2 when I was a kid but I never really took it seriously.. I just played for fun.

Same now really, I will check it out but I won't take this as serious as I did quake.

I have more important things to be doing now-a-days :(

Well I haven't seen Civ 5 yet, but I am sure a lot of the mechanics are the same. Just read through a few of the tutorials, you will figure out a ton of stuff you aren't doing.

If you don't want to spend hours trawling through the guides on civfanatics I'll give you a handful of fairly decent tips related to cities and money/happiness that you might find useful:

Learn to specialise cities, focusing on either Gold/Production/Science/Culture/Great People. In Civ V most locations can do reasonably well in any of these but some locations really excel at one in particular or if you're lucky, more than one.

Build production cities by hills, grassland hills are ideal but desert hills are fine if you can get enough food. Production cities then need to be further specialised into culture/wonder, science or unit production. You build the relevant buildings for whichever you choose, on lower difficulties you can get away with choosing more than one as the maintenance won't be as much of a problem.

Gold Cities can do particularly well in 3 places, the coast with grassland surrounding, pure grassland with a handful of plains, or any area with 2 maybe 3 or more Gold/Silver/Gems. The idea of a Gold City is to produce the minimum amount of food required to work all of your Gold producing tiles, so you need to work out how many Farms (if any) you'll need to be able to have the rest of your tiles as either Trading Posts or other 3G+ improvements.

Make sure you never have spare luxury resources if at all possible, always trade them away, not only will this boost your gold but you will keep any known AI lower on gold.

In most cities you should always build the following: Monument, Granary, Market, Bank, Library and Colloseum depending on difficulty level. Your cities specialisation determines what to build in addition to this.

Any time you have nothing to build, build units, you can then disband them in your territory for gold if you don't need them, or gift them to city-states.

It can help to declare war on city-states early-game and park a unit 2 tiles away from their city, it will generate xp every turn and you can move away to heal when needed.

Do not pay attention to the advisor if it tells you to keep building workers, workers are a massive maintenance drain on higher difficulties. 1 per City is the most I feel you need with the way borders expand in this game.

I would say Squash > badminton but I've recently been hit in the face and neck with a squash ball, it wasn't funny :(
